Writer-director Eli Sasich’s Studio Plus series “Atropa” is competing in the inaugural edition of the Canneseries Digital program.
The seven, ten-minute episodes were produced by Vimeo, which has hosted a number of Sasich’s shorts in the past, and his own Corridor production studio, and can be streamed on the Studio Plus mobile app.
Beyond pay-tv quality visual effects and an action-packed script, the series also boasts some serious sci-fi star power in “Total Recall” and “Starship Troopers” alum Michael Ironside.
Sasich’s script was originally intended to be a feature-length screenplay, but segued easily into a seven-episode, ten-minute format in a process which Sasich described as “amazingly painless.”
Set in the not-too-distant future, Atropa is a time-warping, grungy sci-fi adventure which follows a troubled Off-World officer as he tracks a ship carrying someone important who had disappeared from his life. Each episode features twists and turns, and ends on a cliffhanger.

Eli Sisach’s deep-space sci-fi thriller “Atropa,” Rightor Doyle’s kinky “Bonding” and Frenchmen Edouard Salier’s U.S./Cuba “Cabeza Madre” – where an initially lampooned Cuba in many ways comes off the better – all figure in the inaugural Canneseries Digital, a showcase for the riches – artistic, financial – of a burgeoning entertainment form.
Compulsive viewing, and homaging an ‘80s “Aliens”-school of murky, industrial deep-space sci-fi, American Eli Sasich’s time-warp mystery “Atropa” has an Off-World officer reuniting with his estranged wife in an outer galaxy, as her space vessel collides with another version of itself.
A Studio + Original Series, “Cabeza Madre,” delivers a “Fargo”-oddball character comedy about an uptight American (Clifton Collins Jr.) facing off in Cuba with his decapitated mother’s apartment-block mob.
Created and written-directed by U.S. actor Rightor Doyle (“You’re the Worst”), “Bonding” turns on two former high-school best friends, Tiff and Pete,...

More than a tribute to the sci-fi films of the 1970s and 1980s, this short film from Eli Sasich takes on a life of its own by blending a sleek design and Diy effects with an emotional story focused on the naivete of a mechanical heart. In HENRi, the well-trod concept of floating solo through the darkness of space is injected into a spaceship — a self-aware AI that doesn’t seem to be all that aware. Voiced by 2001‘s Keir Dullea (in a clever meta move), the ship goes through its tasks “There Will Come Soft Rains” style until he begins creating a humanoid body for himself. Like the best sci-fi, it features a sweet vulnerability within unbending metal — a spirit in the machine. It also looks cool. Some shots look like they were gift wrapped from The Frame Store, others appear to have been done in someone’s basement, and...

"38 days ago your beacon disappeared from radar." Wow. Here's a fantastic space adventure sci-fi short to kick off the new year. From director Eli Sasich & writer Clay Tolbert comes a 9-min short called Atropa, about an "off-world detective" who investigates a missing research vessel adrift in deep space. It's described as a concept short, for a feature or series, inspired by "'70s and '80s sci-fi classics like Alien and Blade Runner." There's some excellent VFX work in this, and some great sci-fi concepts that do really show the potential of these filmmakers. I would definitely like to see more, it almost ends too short, right when I was really getting into it and things were getting interesting. But I will still say - this is one short not to miss. Found on Vimeo as a Staff Pick, though it says it was uploaded a year ago. Plot description:...

Filmmaker Eli Sasich co-wrote and directed Atropa, this beautiful sci-fi short film reminiscent of Alien and Event Horizon. Anthony Bonaventura plays a space detective who discovers a ship floating in the middle of nowhere, and he quickly finds out that things aren't what they seem. The cinematography is often breathtaking (the steely blue color palette is especially effective), and the CGI and sets are extremely impressive for what I can only assume is a pretty small budget. According to io9, this is a proof-of-concept short, so hopefully Sasich gets this project in front of the right people so one day we can find out what happens in the rest of the story.

For those of you looking for some good sci-fi movie entertaining, he's the trailer to a short film called HENRi. It was written and directed by Eli Sasich, and I think you'll like what you see. The movie has a cool vibe and tone to it. HENRi was funded by Kickstarter, and it took two years to make. It stars Keir Dullea (2001: A Space Odyssey) and Margot Kidder (Superman), and here's the synopsis...
HENRi tells the story of a derelict spaceship that becomes self-aware and builds itself a mechanical body in order to feel alive. Utilizing a mixture of quarter-scale miniatures, in-camera effects, and computer animation, HENRi is a completely unique and visually stunning short film.
The short has been completed, and if you like what you see in the trailer below you can pay to watch it via Instant Streaming / Digital Download, and on Blu-ray / DVD at henrithefilm.

There's just something about scifi films that take the time to actually build stuff and that's exactly what Eli Sasich and team have done with their film Henri, the story of an artificial consciousness that builds itself a body after the crew of the ship it is aboard dies off.HENRi is an epic new sci-fi short film starring Keir Dullea (2001: A Space Odyssey) and Margot Kidder (Superman). Science fiction is an often under-represented genre in local film festivals, but this year's Austin Film Festival (Aff) has been quite the exception, especially with Aff Shorts Program 8 "The Future Now." This program boasts not only high quality filmmaking, but also features some heavy-hitting new filmmakers and recognizable cast members. I was amazed by the evocative nature of each film, whether the emotional reaction brought forth was laughter, awe or tears.
By far I was most impressed with HENRi, directed by Eli Sasich, which was funded by a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2010 for which Sasich continues to provide updates to his backers. Set in the future, a derelict spaceship controlled by Hybrid Electronic/Neuron Responsive Intelligence -- HENRi for short -- and powered by a human brain, has begun to experience disjointed memories of its original owner. Find out more about this film that pays homage to sci-fi greats such...

"Lifeless" is a television series, currently, of three episodes that premiered on Fearnet.com earlier this year. This zombie styled, apocalyptic series was shot by David and Eli Sasich and the series has found some success with fans at the Fearnet.com. However, David Sasich has stated that he requires greater funding and support to shoot further episodes. So, this article is a call to fans to watch each of the episodes either for the first time or again at Fearnet.com. As well, if the series sparks your interest leave a comment on the Fearnet.com site and request more episodes. Otherwise, this television series will be drowned out by the current filming of the Frank Darabont undead series "The Walking Dead." The link for the series can be found below with the "Lifeless" trailer. Go there now!

"Lifeless" is a television series that was produced by David and Eli Sasich in 2008 and the three shows that are available now are a welcome addition to Film Friday. This series began with a vision to produce several more episodes, however, only three have been completed. Fearnet has premiered the series online and the film is available free for horror enthusiasts below. In the picture, the world is in chaos where a Bird-flu like pandemic has spiraled out of control across a global population and turned many of those remaining into homicidal maniacs. A few uninfected survivors band together in a high rise apartment building, while searching for a solution to a decimated and infected population below. Take a moment to enjoy one of television's finest zombie series since "Dead Set" (if the series does not play right away read the comments for a solution). More details on "Lifeless" below.

Apparently there is a new television series in the works that sets itself inside a zombie epidemic. Looking very "28 Days Later," the first three episodes have been shot and screenings for "Lifeless," took place in New York late last year. Unfortunately, the buzz seems to have died down slightly, but have a look at the full trailer inside and hopefully, with some more fan interest, a film studio, or television broadcaster will pick "Lifeless," up. For more information on the series check out the "Lifeless," homepage below.
