A light comedy that dabbles in racial commentary but pulls in too many directions simultaneously, Scott Zabielski's Where's the Money puts a Vine celebrity in the lead and finds that mastery of a six-second video format is no predictor of big-screen success. Andrew "King Bach" Bachelor is amiable but hardly star material here, playing a young man whose hunt for buried treasure forces him to infiltrate a college fraternity. Commercial prospects are slim, but helped by a supporting cast including Method Man, Terry Crews and others.

Comedians Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele -- known for their Comedy Central sketch show "Key & Peele" -- are teaming up again for a big screen project: a reboot of the "Police Academy" series.
The Hollywood Reporter writes that the duo are joining original "Police Academy" producer Paul Maslansky in reviving the franchise, which spawned seven films and two TV series from 1984 to 1994. Maslansky has been attached to the reboot for several years, and while the film has seen collaborators come and go -- including onetime director Scott Zabielski -- the producer told THR in 2010 that he was determined to populate the project with emerging comedic talent, something the addition of Key and Peele confirms.
"It's going to be very worthwhile to the people who remember it and to those who saw it on TV," Maslansky told THR at the time. "It's going to be a new class. We hope to...

We've seen comedians Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele get hilariously excited about A Good Day to Die Hard and Liam Neeson in Non-Stop, and their work on the hit Comedy Central sketch series has led to the duo writing a feature film comedy with Judd Apatow. The project has been gestating since 2010, and "Tosh.0" director Scott Zabielski was once attached to be at the helm, but has since vacated the project, leaving the position open. There’s no doubt that Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele have established themselves as a formidable comedic duo, as exemplified by their hit show “Key & Peele” which Comedy Central renewed for a fourth season earlier this year. Their success has lead to the duo being offered a couple of different projects over the past few months: they’re currently developing a feature film with Judd Apatow at Universal and they’re slated to appear as FBI agents in the upcoming FX drama “Fargo.” Now New Line Cinema hopes to get a piece of the Key & Peele action as they’re currently in talks with the duo about producing a “Police Academy” reboot. Yes, you heard that correctly… after seven films and two separate television shows, New Line Cinema is looking to dust off those uniforms for yet another “Police Academy” movie. New Line Cinema has been threatening a Police Academy reboot for years, but only now does it look like all of their efforts may be going towards a good idea. Why? Because The Wrap is reporting that the studio is talking with Keegan Michael Key and Jordan Peele about the possibility of producing the new movie. With Tosh.0 director Scott Zabielski no longer attached to the project, apparently New Line wanted to infuse the project with some new blood, which is what led to the Key and Peele negotiations. Right now the comedy duo is only in talks to produce the project, though there is a possibility that they could end up starring in the movie as well. It all depends on the quality of the script, which is currently being written by Jeremy Garelick (The Break-Up). For those of you who aren't familiar with Key and Peele, the comedy...

In addition to his Hollywood career, Zabielski, who has been tapped to helm New Line’s Police Academy remake, serves as a reserve police officer in West Hollywood. The march towards a new Police Academy continues as the world waits with baited breath; so far New Line has announced a director as well as a new screenwriter hired to do rewrites. And now, thanks to WhatCulture, a few more nuggets of information has been gleaned about the project.
In an exclusive interview with composer Robert Folk, they learned that this new Police Academy will be a reboot of the entire franchise, something I think we all just assumed was the case. In addition, Folk also gushed about the pre-production on the project and of director Scott Zabielski, whom he thinks will bring a 21 Jump Street-style edginess to the reboot. Here’s what Folk had to say:
“They are thinking of it as, too coin the overused term, a ‘reboot’. That is how they are looking at it, as doing the whole series all over again for a new generation of that target audience.

To quote the great Commandant Lassard, it has been “many, many wonderful” years since the original ‘Police Academy’ was released. From those days of risqué humour, walking one man sound effects and ‘Carry On’ style antics, grew a franchise that just refused to die. Some instalments were fun whilst others were nearly unwatchable, but still Mahoney and Co held a special place in American culture.
Whatever way you look at it, the 1984 original was a huge success and earned over $80 million at the box office, meaning a modern continuation was always inevitable. We heard news a while back that newbie director Scott Zabielski was directing some sort of sequel, but things have been quiet for a very long time.
In a recent exclusive interview with film composer Robert Folk, WhatCulture has discovered that the long gestating Police Academy 8 film will in fact be a reboot of the entire series!
Whatever way you look at it, the 1984 original was a huge success and earned over $80 million at the box office, meaning a modern continuation was always inevitable. We heard news a while back that newbie director Scott Zabielski was directing some sort of sequel, but things have been quiet for a very long time.

Here are a couple of updates on projects that now have some writers, the first a unique take on a literary icon, the second a crass remake no one is asking for....
Anyway, let's start with the good stuff. While the name Emma Forrest is still waiting for a produced credit on a feature film, her projects are intriguing enough that we're always curious what she's up to. She first came to fame on the 2009 Black List with "Liars (A-e)" a unique, female-led road comedy that had Richard Linklater set to direct with Rebecca Hall and Kat Dennings to star (sounds awesome, right?) before a variety of factors, including the writer's strike, pretty much tanked the project. Forrest's name burbled up earlier this year with her memoir "Your Voice In My Head" being turned into a feature film starring Emma Watson and directed by David Yates. But the director left...

The trend of unwanted remakes continues, and the latest victim is a well-known ‘80s comedy. Deadline reports that screenwriter Jeremy Garelick (The Break-Up) has joined the effort to reboot Police Academy, the wacky franchise that spanned seven films and a TV series over the course of a decade — a very long, mostly Steve Guttenberg–less decade.
In the time since New Line announced the remake of the bumbling cop romp back in 2010, a screenplay was penned by David Diamond and David Weissman, but Garelick was –as happened on a little movie called The Hangover — hired for rewrites. In addition, Paul Maslansky, who produced the original series, will oversee the film, which is being helmed by first-time feature director Scott Zabielski; he was hired in January.

Exclusive: The Break-Up scribe Jeremy Garelick has come aboard New Line’s reboot of the Police Academy franchise that launched in the 1980s and spanned seven films through the mid-’90s. The comedy, once again produced by Paul Maslansky, picks up the tale of a group of bumbling police recruits. David Diamond and David Weissman wrote the most recent draft. Garelick, who did extensive rewrites on The Hangover, is separately rewriting Sick Day for Universal and Imagine. He’s attached to direct that film. Police Academy will be directed by Scott Zabielski, who’s making his feature debut after helming TV episodes that include Tosh.O. Garelick’s repped by UTA and Principato-Young, while Zabielski is repped by UTA and Underground.

The Break-Up screenwriter Jeremy Garelick has been brought aboard New Line's reboot of the Police Academy franchise, Deadline reports. He'll perform rewrites on the current script, most recently drafted by David Diamond and David Weissman. Scott Zabielski, best known for producing and directing episodes of "Tosh.0," will be making his feature film debut as the project's director. The original seven-film comedy series starred actors such Steve Guttenberg, G.W. Bailey, Bobcat Goldthwait, Bubba Smith, David Graf, Marion Ramsey, Michael Winslow, Kim Cattrall and Sharon Stone and detailed the comical misadventures of police training.

New Line's "Police Academy" remake gets a director who not only has proven he can helm very funny content, but also is surprisingly knowledgeable about being a police officer. In other news, Melissa McCarthy's upcoming film "Tammy" also nabs a director, Paul Feig is set to helm a new film (that's not "Bridesmaids 2") and the "Goodfellas" TV show finds itself a network to call home.
It's January 10, and you're here for today's daily news round-up.

We haven't heard anything about the gestating remake of the long-running comedy franchise Police Academy since March of 2010, but now it appears some progress is finally being made on the project as Deadline reports New Line Cinema has set Scott Zabielski to make his feature directorial debut with the remake. Zabielski has made a name for himself directing dozens of episodes of the web-skewering comedy series "Tosh.0" with comedian Daniel Tosh on Comedy Central. But the really interesting fact here is that Zabielski actually went through police academy himself and is still a reserve officer in West Hollywood. Zabielski's real-life experiences should help bring a different kind of comedy to the series and might even make it that much more true to life. Maybe he'll even bring Tosh in for a role in the ensemble comedy about the silly exploits of rookie cops hitting the streets after a city decides...

After the seventh installment in the Police Academy series, earned a dismal $126,000 in 1994, it was thought that the juggernaut of low-brow humor movie franchises had finally run its course after taking in a combined total of nearly $240 million in 10 years. However, New Line Cinema obviously feels that enough time has passed for the franchise to make a revival because the studio is planning a new Police Academy movie. According to Deadline, New Line has hired Scott Zabielski — whose credits include directing several seasons worth of episodes of the (some might say equally low-brow) Comedy Central viral video clip show Tosh.0 hosted by comedian Daniel Tosh — to helm the remake as his feature debut.

New Line is set to give Police Academy the remake treatment. Variety reports that Tosh.0's Scott Zabielski is making his feature film directorial debut. He won the coveted gig over more experienced directors, after completing actual police academy training as a reserve officer in West Hollywood. The script was co-written by David Diamond and David Weissman. The film's original producer, Paul Maslansky, is returning to produce the remake. Production is expected to begin next year, after casting is completed.
The original was a box office success when it was released in 1984. It stayed atop the box office for three weeks and then dropped down a slot. It regained the top spot for it's fifth and sixth weekends and continued doing well throughout the summer. New Line are pushing forward with their reboot of the Police Academy franchise with the hiring of rookie filmmaker Scott Zabielski to direct a remake. Zabielski is best known for his work producing and directing episodes of the Comedy Central show “Tosh.0,” but will be making his feature film debut with the remake.

Man, this sounds bad. Perhaps hoping to ride off the buzz from Sony's “21 Jump Street,” New Line Cinema is moving forward with the “Police Academy” reboot everyone’s been waiting for. We were nervous nearly two years ago when the project bubbled up, but now the studio has some talent attached—namely, first-time feature helmer Scott Zabielski, producer and director of Daniel Tosh’s unfunny half-hour Comedy Central series “Tosh.0.” It gets better. Zabielski is apparently qualified to direct the film in part because according to Deadline he “went through the [police] academy and is a reserve police officer in West Hollywood.” That sort of logic seems to be working out for the “active Navy Seals” in the "Act of Valor" trailer, which contains acting so wooden, it would embarrass Paul Walker. Real-life experience, while valuable, is not a replacement for talent. Beginning in 1984, the...

I have to admit, out of all the remakes that have been in some stage of development over the last couple of years, Police Academy is one of the last ones I actually expected to see get made. Nevertheless, New Line appears to be serious about the project, and they are continuing to move forward with it. This week it has been announced that the project just gained a director by the name of Scott Zabielski. Zabielski has no feature film credits to his name, but he is a director on the Comedy Central series Tosh.0. Perhaps more interestingly, he has actually been through police academy himself, as he also serves as a reserve police officer in West Hollywood. I'm not at all familiar with Tosh.0, but from what I hear it is a Web Soup-type of show that comments on viral videos and internet culture. Which is perfect because...

Studio New Line confirms Scott Zabielski is to take charge of the 8th instalment of the love-it-or-hate-it rookie cops franchise
You might think that seven Police Academy films were more than enough, but somebody in Hollywood disagrees with you. Studio New Line has hired first-time director Scott Zabielski, a part-time reserve police officer in west Hollywood, to take charge of a new film which will aim to reboot the long-running and much-maligned comedy series.
There has been speculation for some time that a new Police Academy film – the first since 1994's ill-fated Police Academy 7: Mission to Moscow – was in the works. The series made a total of $242m at the worldwide box office and also spawned two TV series. Original producer Paul Maslansky, who is on board for the new iteration, said in 2010 that he hoped to return the series to the big screen with an entirely new cast.

Rookie director and police reserve officer, Scott Zabielski has found himself entrusted with the upcoming reboot of the Police Academy franchise.
Zabielski, who has helmed close to 51 episodes of Comedy Central's Tosh.0, will direct a new version of the 80s Steve Guttenberg-starring cult comedy that spawned six sequels.
Speaking to THR, original producer Paul Maslansky stated, "it's going to be very worthwhile to the people who remember it and to those who saw it on TV”.
And far from being another cash grab attempt at a time when Hollywood is rife with remakes and reboots, Maslansky assures fans that this undertaking stands for much more than that.
"It's going to be a new class. We hope to discover new talent and season it with great comedians. It'll be anything but another movie with a numeral next to it. And we'll most probably retain the wonderful musical theme", he added.

Back in 2008, Steve Guttenberg revealed that he was planning to return for another "Police Academy" movie, adding that a script was being written and most of the original cast would likely return, including Kim Cattrall and Sharon Stone. Then in 2010, THR confirmed that New Line Cinema was looking to reboot the franchise. And now comes word that Scott Zabielski has been hired to direct the new film. Zabielski is making his feature directing debut after having helmed several episodes of the hit Comedy Central show "Tosh.0." But what he lacks in helming experience, he makes up for in police experience. Zabielski went through the academy as a young man and is a reserve police officer in West Hollywood.

The plundering of my childhood favourites continues with news that the oft-rumoured Police Academy remake is back on track as Deadline report that New Line are moving full steam ahead on the film and have named the director with enough balls to try and re-create one of the 80s biggest comedy franchises. Apparently Scott Zabielski will be in the directors chair for what is actually his first feature film. However Zabielski isn’t a total rookie when it comes to making the funnies – he previously worked on the well-recieved Comedy Central show Tosh.O.
No other news is forthcoming, I just hope that New Line can make a little room for the original cast somewhere, even if it is just a brief cameo…...

Maybe this will be what finally coaxes Steve Guttenberg out of hiding?
After news first broke of a possible remake to the 1984 comedy Police Academy almost two years ago, EW has confirmed that New Line Cinema has hired director Scott Zabielski to helm a new version of the so-bad-it’s-good cult favorite that spawned no less than six sequels. Zabielski, who is making his feature directing debut, cut his teeth directing episodes of the Comedy Central hit Tosh.0, so he obviously knows from smart aleck renegades striving to buck the system. He is also, amazingly, a reserve police officer with the City of West Hollywood.

Variety has just broke the story that New Line Cinema has signed on Scott Zabielski to direct its upcoming remake of the lowbrow 1984 comedy Police Academy. Zabielski comes from television, most notably as director of several episodes of the Comedy Central show Tosh.o (a viral video clipfest hosted by comedian Daniel Tosh). According to Deadline, who also claim to have broken the story, Zabielski is actually a reserve police officer in West Hollywood so he has first-hand knowledge of police academies so there’s at least some sort of thinking behind this besides “he’s cheap, let’s hire him!”.
The original Police Academy, which followed a group of new recruits to the police squad that were less than qualified (zoinks!), was successful enough to spawn six sequels as well as two TV shows (one animated in 1988, and one live-action in 1997) . New Line Sets Director for ‘Police Academy’ Remake; In Other News, They’re Remaking ‘Police Academy’
As I suspect that most reports of this news will fall on the side of snark with a side of pleading with a holy entity to explain why this is befalling humanity, I have chosen to present this news as straight as possible. Otherwise, I might combust. New Line Cinema has hired a director to reboot the Police Academy franchise, a series of seven films from the 80s and 90s that followed the humorous disasters that befell a group of unsuitable police trainees. Because, obviously, there is nothing funnier than the concept of morons, idiots, and losers serving and protecting their community. The series most notably starred Steve Guttenberg and that one guy who made all those sounds. The reboot was apparently announced back in February, but it appears that I’ve blocked that memory from my mind, because it was simply too heinous and bizarre to remember. New Line has picked Scott Zabielski to direct what...

I am willing to bet the very little money that comes from this site that the silly, comedic action comedy that will be the remake of 21 Jump Street is why the following news has happened.
Variety is reporting that “longtime “Tosh.0″ helmer Scott Zabielski will make his feature directorial debut with New Line’s remake of Police Academy.”
The trade tells us that one of the reasons he beat out several more experienced directors was because he had actually gone through actual police academy training as a reserve officer in West Hollywood. That’s great and I am sure he will do something fun with the material but do we really need this? Reno 911 and Super Troopers didn’t add enough to the goofy police ensemble comedies? The Other Guys and now Jump Street aren’t enough? Does anyone remember that National Security movie with Martin Lawrence?
