This article contains spoilers for Netflix’s Choose or Die
In Netflix’s Choose or Die we meet Kayla, who is struggling in poverty while taking care of her grieving mother. Intrigued by the possibility of winning a cash prize and changing her family’s fate, she unwittingly becomes embroiled in the supernatural world of a cursed retro video game called Curs>R, which forces its players to make distressing choices for others to save their own lives. Ultimately, Kayla manages to beat the game using her coding skills, unlocking the curse’s power for herself.
If you’ve just finished watching the streaming service’s wild horror genre offering, you might have noticed that the ending of the film is a little tantalizing, and it certainly leaves room for the story to continue if enough people are interested in seeing the deadly concept at the heart of the movie explored further.

Role playing games possess a certain escapist thrill, but what happens when fantasy creeps into reality? Today’s popular user-driven experience gets a nostalgic 1980s makeover in “Choose or Die,” the terrifying refrain in a game with extremely high stakes. The pushes the idea of a cursed survival game to sinister ends, creating a world where every choice has cruel — and very real — consequences. Anchored by a scrappy coder heroine named Kayla (Iola Evans), whose tough exterior is armor for a difficult home life, the film offers a fresh take on a smart concept through the eyes of a compelling teenager. More leads like this, please.
“Choose or Die” is a perfect entry point into genre for younger viewers, one that will also satisfy old school diehards even as it takes some pointed (perhaps deserved?) jabs at them.

‘Choose or Die’ Review: A Video Game Kills Without Rhyme or Reason in This Disposable Netflix Horror
Even the smallest feature-length film is a considerable logistical enterprise, so it’s a bit flummoxing how little thought appears to have been put into “Choose or Die.” While there have been worse-crafted, even more routinely formulaic Netflix horror efforts, this one takes the cake for sheer whateverness of barely-there plot, concept, character detailing and so on. If some movies now seem designed to be consumed on phones, this one demands so little attention, for such scant rewards, you could probably watch it while vacuuming or doing yoga without missing anything important.
Not that first-time feature director Toby Meakins or his cast do slipshod work. But their labors are expended on a “viral” curse premise so indifferently defined and developed, the result recalls the archaic term “quota quickie,” which referred to low-budget 1930s British films made by Parliamentary decree just to keep the industry chugging. “Choose or Die” may substitute supernatural deaths for music-hall songs,...

There’s a moment in episode three of The Watch, BBC America’s don’t-call-it-an-adaption of Terry Pratchett’s hugely popular ‘City Watch’ novels – the police-procedural strand within his comic fantasy Discworld series – where principle villain Carcer Dun (Samuel Adewunmi), quietly deploys probably the most important line of dialogue in the whole show: “The history of this world has already been written” he says bitterly to Wonse, his accomplice (Bianca Simone Mannie), “there’s no place for us here“. It’s a moment of meta-awareness in which our antagonist shows he understands the narrative conventions he is operating within and refuses to be confined by them; a theme absolutely typical of Pratchett’s books, and that runs through the show like a glass of milk runs through a sick old lady.
It’s also literally true. The history of this world has been written – Pratchett wrote it across 42 novels between...

New York City-based leaders from across the business spectrum have urged Congress to certify the presidential election results as scheduled on Wednesday, warning that any delays would “run counter to the essential tenets of our democracy.”
The letter, issued today, comes as Congress braces for a showdown on Wednesday between 11 incumbent and incoming U.S. senators and some 140 GOP members of the House vowing to contest the electoral college results from their states. The push is part of President Donald Trump’s increasingly desperate campaign to falsely claim that he prevailed in the Nov. 3 presidential election over his Democratic challenger, President-elect Joe Biden. Make no mistake: The Watch is inspired by Terry Pratchett’s Discworld offshoot series, The City Watch, but the BBC America series is very much its own animal, much the way Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency took its own direction from Douglas Adams’ novel on the same network. However, if the trailer coming out of New York Comic-Con’s virtual panel is any indication, there’s plenty of chaotic fun to be had in this version of the story.
The eight episodes of The Watch‘s inaugural season will follow recognizable characters such as City Watch Captain Sam Vimes (Richard Dormer), the last scion of nobility Lady Sybil Ramkin (Lara Rossi), the naïve but heroic Carrot (Adam Hugill), the mysterious Angua (Marama Corlett), the ingenious non-binary forensics expert Cheery (Jo Eaton-Kent), the dictatorial Lord Vetinari (Anna Chancellor), and Pratchett’s iconic personification of Death voiced by Wendell Pierce.

Specifically, “The Watch” is inspired by the “City Watch” subset of the “Discworld” novels, and centers on the misfit cops as they fight to save a ramshackle city of normalized wrongness, from both the past and future in a perilous quest. The eight-episode thriller will feature several famous “Discworld” creations including City Watch Captain Sam Vimes, the last scion of nobility Lady Sybil Ramkin, the naïve but heroic Carrot, the mysterious Angua and the ingenious non-binary forensics expert Cheery together with Terry Pratchett’s iconic characterization of Death.
The series is produced by BBC Studios for BBC America, and is distributed by BBC Studios. It is co-produced with Narrativia. Simon Allen writes the series, Hilary Salmon executive produces, as does Ben Donald for BBC Studios and Rob Wilkins for Narrativia.

The U.S. cable network describes the show as a “punk rock thriller” inspired by the City Watch subset of Discworld novels. The character-driven series centers on Terry Pratchett’s misfit cops as they fight to save a ramshackle city of normalized wrongness, from both the past and future in a perilous quest.

Exclusive: Terry Pratchett fans may want to stay close to a television screen over the next couple of years: his comedy fantasy book series Discworld has become his latest work to be snapped up for a small screen adaptation. 3.10 We Are The Garrison
So here we are, the end of both the third series and the show. It’s been a funny old run, never quite meeting the dramatic highs of the second nor the freshness of the first, but that’s not to say it didn’t have its moments. It is somewhat fitting that We Are The Garrison reflects the series as a whole – it ticks all the boxes but does so in a somewhat workmanlike manner. It's a fitting end to the show - good, mostly satisfying but lacking that certain something that would set it distinctly apart.
It was fantastic to see the Musketeers being placed unequivocally front and centre. All four actors embraced their final moments in these characters and each shone. Writer and showrunner Simon Allen has done a good job to ensure that no one...

3.3 Brother In Arms
Let’s start with a complaint. Three episodes into this final series of The Musketeers and this is the third completely new time slot. Even with interference from football and news events, that feels disrespectful to fans and not indicative of a show wanting to go out on a high but rather something being hurried off the BBC's schedules. It’s a shame because Brother In Arms in a step up from last week’s The Hunger and demonstrates that The Musketeers deserves to be shown a little more respect.
Simon Allen takes over writing duties from Simon Ashford as this week we see The Musketeers come to grips with Louis’ brother Gaston, grapple with their consciences and do some basic derring-do. However,...

The Musketeers returns for its third and final series on Saturday the 28th of May with a confident, entertaining opener...
If you're reading this than maybe you, like me, felt a Musketeer-shaped hole in the Beeb’s New Year line-up. Fortunately, there was no need to fear cancellation as it was always going to be a question of ‘when’, not ‘if’ as filming of the forthcoming season had been no secret. The question was, despite the wait, was this season going to be better than the last (which was pretty decent by anyone’s standards) and how were the showrunners going to keep things fresh?
Based on episode one of the new run, I can say with some confidence that the show seems to have grown in all the right ways.
It opens big and picks up from where the last season finished (albeit four years later...

Fans of The Musketeers - meet your new villain.
Rupert Everett is set to follow in the footsteps of Peter Capaldi and Marc Warren by playing an antagonist in the BBC drama's third series.
Everett has been cast as Philippe Achille, Marquis de Feron - illegitimate brother to Louis Xiii (Ryan Gage) and the corrupt Governor of Paris.
Jamaica Inn actor Matthew McNulty will also join the show as Lucien Grimaud, a money lender and vicious criminal who goes up against the Musketeers.
The pair will join returning cast members Luke Pasqualino, Tom Burke, Howard Charles, Santiago Cabrera, Hugo Speer, Ryan Gage, Alexandra Dowling and Tamla Kari.
The Musketeers creator Adrian Hodges will not return as showrunner for the third series, with Simon Ashford and Simon Allen serving as lead writers and Matthew Bird (Fortitude, Death in Paradise) joining as producer.
New episodes have been shooting in Prague since April.

2.10 Trial And Punishment
So this is it, the end of series 2. It’s been a fair old journey with some excellent highs and fortunately not many lows (not to mention far too many interruptions – damn you sport and charity!). The series finale often seems to linger, perhaps unfairly, as the one remembered by most and considered a yard stick for the run as a whole. In that respect, Trial And Punishment (written by Simon Allen and directed by Nicholas Renton), is a fitting end to what has been a really strong season.
Perhaps the most vivid image from last week's preview was of a haunted Constance being led to the executioner. It was with some surprise then, that this opened the episode, as...
