Richard Eustis, an Emmy-award winning screenwriter and co-creator of 1986 ABC sitcom “Head of the Class,” died Oct. 30 at the age of 86 in Thousand Oaks, Calif.
Eustis served as one-half of the writing team Eustis and Elias, along with writer and director Michael Elias, who together created the high school sitcom, which ran for five seasons from 1986 to 1991. The show followed a group of gifted high school students in the Individualized Honors Program at a fictional Manhattan high school called Millard Fillmore, along with their history teacher Charlie Moore, who was portrayed by Howard Hesseman. The actor left the show before its fifth season and was replaced by Billy Connolly, who played a teacher named Billy MacGregor. Exclusive: By the time the Nexstar Media Group’s long-in-the-works 75 acquisition of the CW finally closed earlier this month, it was the height of pitch season, when broadcast networks buy scripted projects to develop as new series for next season.
On the morning of the August 15 deal announcement, Nexstar toppers said that, under the new ownership, the CW would be going for broader and cheaper programming, including syndicated fare acquisitions, with the goal to make the network profitable by 2025.
Since then, sources tell Deadline that CW brass have reached out to the creative community, including taking agency meetings, to lay out their buying strategy going forward and tell everyone that the network is open for business.
On the original scripted programming side, in addition to the CW’s signature genre shows and teen soaps, which the network intends to keep doing — just not as many — it plans to broaden its...

Riverdale might be coming to an end, but The CW isn’t planning on saying goodbye to the Archie Comics universe just yet, as the network eyes Jake Chang, a new series from Daniel Dae Kim’s 3Ad. According to Deadline, the series comes from writer Oanh Ly and writer-director Viet Nguyen (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) and centers on the forthcoming Archie character Jake Chang, who will make his comic book debut in July 2022. Much like Riverdale, the series is described as a “soapy, noir thriller teen drama set in the world of Archie Comics.” The Asian-American-led mystery drama follows the 16-year-old Jake, a private investigator navigating the racially and socio-economically diverse worlds of his gentrified home of Chinatown and the elite private high school he attends. According to Deadline, the show will flip “nearly every Asian stereotype—honor, martial arts, destiny, lineage, parental sacrifice—on its head.” Jake will...

A new Archie Comics-based drama is coming to The CW, TheWrap has confirmed.
“Jake Chang” — set in the same universe as its predecessors “Riverdale” and “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” — hails from Oanh Ly and Viet Nguyen, who worked on the latter series, Daniel Dae Kim’s 3Ad, Archie Comics and Warner Bros. Television.
The official logline for the series is as follows: “‘Jack Chang’ is an Asian-American–led mystery following a 16-year-old private investigator as he navigates the racially and socioeconomically diverse worlds of his ever-gentrifying home of Chinatown, and the elite private high school he attends. The show will blend soapy teen drama with the neon noir aesthetic, all while flipping nearly every Asian stereotype — honor, martial arts, destiny, lineage, parental sacrifice — on its head.”

Sweet Tooth's story is far from over.
Netflix on Thursday announced a renewal for Sweet Tooth Season, citing what the company calls as "60 million member households" watching the show in its first four weeks.
As is the case with Netflix's arbitrary numbers, the number above means that each of those households watched at two minutes of the series.
Sweet Tooth Season 2 will consist of 8 1-hour episodes.
Jim Mickle will serve as Executive Producer, Writer, Director, and Showrunner for season 2. Mickle said of the renewal,
“It’s been equally thrilling and heartwarming to experience how people around the world have been falling in love with our deer-boy."
"We couldn’t be more excited to continue our collaboration with Netflix and keep following Gus and his friends on their extraordinary journey,” he continued.
In addition to Mickle, Team Downey’s Susan Downey, Robert Downey Jr., and Amanda Burrell, and Linda Moran will return as Executive Producers.

“Sweet Tooth” has been renewed for Season 2 at Netflix, Variety has learned.
The second season will consist of eight, one-hour episodes. News of the renewal comes just under two months after the debut of the first season, which dropped on June 4.
“It’s been equally thrilling and heartwarming to experience how people around the world have been falling in love with our deer-boy,” said series showrunner Jim Mickle. “We couldn’t be more excited to continue our collaboration with Netflix and keep following Gus and his friends on their extraordinary journey.”
“Sweet Tooth” is based on the DC comic book series of the same name by Jeff Lemire. The series takes place ten years after “The Great Crumble” wreaked havoc on the world and led to the mysterious emergence of hybrids — babies born part human, part animal. Unsure if hybrids are the cause or result of the virus, many humans fear and hunt them.

In an age when people are far too used to blasting through entire seasons (or series) in a weekend, it’s a pleasure to celebrate the concept of the great episode: a concise bite of storytelling that functions as its own narrative as well as a part of a larger whole.
Last year’s list was 25 episodes, but expanding this list to 30 became necessary given the incredible scope of television to be considered — across all platforms, there was too much to celebrate. Some of the series below represent the year’s most significant programs, while others may not have made IndieWire’s best-of lists, but deserved recognition for what they achieved within individual installments. From soul-deep despair to giggle-inducing joy, the range of TV in 2018 covered all corners of the human existence.

Pressing the play button back after a quick break from routine, Sabrina finds herself tackling two larger than life problems. Better her than us.
But when you pay closer attention, the bigger success comes from the way that other characters are at the center of the story this time around. Giving other main characters roles that fit them allows the show to be even more interesting, and removes the risk of focusing too much on one area.
During Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Season 1 Episode 6 and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Season 1 Episode 7, Sabrina has to deal with a demon that possessed Uncle Jesse and is threatening to take her friends next.
Then she must figure out a way to remove The Feast of Feasts from existence before Prudence is eaten by the whole clan. Meanwhile, Harvey learns more about his family, and he might regret showing interest in the first place.

Revolution, Season 1, Episode 18: “Clue”
Written by Paul Grellong and Oanh Ly
Directed by Helen Shaver
Airs Mondays at 10 pm (Et) on NBC
Off the bat, we can probably discount Nora as the Militia’s mole. Director Shaver goes a little further in depicting torture in times of war than you might expect from a network drama, and the episode’s actually much better for it. The brutality grounds the action (Daniella Alonso sells it well) and makes the narrative a touch more legitimate.
It’s a shame then, that the ridiculousness of Revolution soon rears its head as Nora slips away from Monroe’s clutches with Sanborn’s help. The frequency with which the cast fall in and out of captivity borders on the absurd, and thanks to that moment, the “fiction” aspect of sci-fi resurfaces quickly.
