Warning: the following contains major spoilers for In a Violent Nature.
Most seasoned horror fans have seen their share of slashers. From massive franchises to indie gems, this particular brand of scary movie follows a final girl and her friends as they’re terrorized by a masked killer with an ax to grind. Arguably originating from classics like Halloween and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, the sub genre was codified in Carol Clover’s “Her Body, Himself” which opens Men, Women, and Chain Saws: Gender in the Modern Horror Film, an academic study of the genre. This landmark essay coined the term “final girl” while identifying four additional slasher components. Clover summarizes “the killer is the psychotic product of a sick family, but still recognizably human; the victim is a beautiful, sexually active woman; the location is not-home, at a Terrible Place; the weapon is something other than a gun...

Experimental slasher In a Violent Nature, writer/director Chris Nash’s feature debut, sliced up an impressive opening weekend at the box office and received critical acclaim for its unique take on the slasher subgenre. But there’s one standout moment that has horror fans buzzing: a centerpiece kill so unexpected and gnarly that it ensures undead killer Johnny (Ry Barrett) is a slasher villain to remember.
In a Violent Nature frames the slasher events from the perspective of Johnny, summoned from the dead when a locket is removed from a collapsed fire tower in the woods that entombs his rotting corpse. In a recent chat, Chris Nash and Ry Barrett revealed just how tough this experimental slasher was to make, with Barrett joining the cast well into production, prompting extensive reshoots. That also applies to the aforementioned kill, which is best described as a “yoga pretzel.”

Like Terrifier 2 before it, the acclaimed slasher movie In a Violent Nature was released into theaters in its Unrated form over the weekend, and the box office numbers are in.
The unique arthouse slasher movie comes courtesy of IFC Films and Shudder, and it scared up an impressive $2.1 million from 1,426 theaters in the United States over the weekend.
That’s one hell of a strong opening weekend for an experimental unrated slasher movie, nearly matching the $2.8 million opening of IFC’s Late Night with the Devil earlier this year. That film gave IFC its all-time highest opening weekend, and it went on to make $11.9 million worldwide. Will In a Violent Nature similarly leg its way to $10+ million? Stay tuned to find out.
A highly unique slasher movie, In a Violent Nature frames the killings from the perspective of the masked slasher as he trudges his way through the woods.

Imagine the Dardenne brothers got very high one night on some primo hash, then directed a slasher flick.
That may be the best way to describe In a Violent Nature, and yes, we admit that this review has already drawn battle lines: You can sense jump-scare purists scoffing, arthouse habitues recoiling, and anyone who falls within the center of that Venn diagram [raises hand] salivating. That middle ground is indeed the sweet spot of writer-director Chris Nash’s feature debut, which adopts a calming, oddly meditative aesthetic before making extremely good on the promise of its title.

In A Violent Nature is now in theaters, and if you've been keeping track of writer/director Chris Nash's critically-acclaimed horror flick, there's a good chance you'll have heard about a shockingly gruesome scene that's been dubbed the "Yoga Kill."
Now, some specific details on the sequence have been revealed (via Variety).
If you'd rather not have the already infamous kill ruined before you see the movie, here's your spoiler warning.
The scene begins with relentless, undead killer Johnny stalking an unfortunate victim named Aurora (Charlotte Creaghan), who he finds doing some yoga close to the edge of a cliff (never a good idea with a murderous monster in the area).
"In a gore-tastic sequence, Johnny disembowels Aurora with his trusty, rusty hook, then yanks her head backwards through the gaping hole in her stomach. Johnny kicks the human pretzel down the cliff, where her mangled, mutilated body rolls halfway down.

An innovative and relentless slasher that follows the gory story from the killer's point of view, In a Violent Nature is now playing in theaters via IFC Films and Shudder. To celebrate the film's release, Daily Dead caught up with writer/director Chris Nash to discuss his unique feature-length directorial debut, including the ambitious logistics of following the film's killer through the woods, the cut footage that would give the movie even more of a horror hangout vibe, his plans to tell more stories in the world of In a Violent Nature, and he also shared his affection for Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning (one of my personal favorites from the Friday the 13th franchise)!

Plot: When a locket is removed from a collapsed fire tower in the woods that entombs the rotting corpse of Johnny, a vengeful spirit spurred on by a horrific 60-year old crime, his body is resurrected and becomes hellbent on retrieving it.
Review: I’ve been waiting my entire life for someone to come along and make “Pov Jason Voorhees.” The concept of following a slasher villain as they go on their journey of mayhem is the stuff of dreams. I’ve always felt that slashers are the prime candidate to deconstruct in an interesting way. Not since Scream has the subgenre been given a unique perspective and had hype behind it. So, like the 1996 classic, I was hoping this would build off of the films that came before it, and bring slasher films to new heights. Instead of a love letter, In A Violent Nature feels like an insult to the genre.

‘In a Violent Nature’ Director Reveals How His Unique Slasher Was Reshot Almost Entirely [Interview]
Writer/Director Chris Nash’s feature debut, In a Violent Nature, is set to unleash an arthouse twist on the slasher in theaters this Friday, but the journey getting there has been long and arduous. So much so that Nash reshot a large percentage of the film just to get it, and the gory practical effects, just right.
That included a recast of the film’s undead slasher villain, Johnny (Ry Barrett), who is unwittingly summoned when a locket is removed from a collapsed fire tower in the woods that entombs his rotting corpse. That spells terrible news for the campers vacationing in his territory.
Bloody Disgusting spoke with filmmaker Chris Nash and star Ry Barrett ahead of the film’s theatrical release about Johnny’s nature and the tough hurdles in making this unique indie horror film. When In A Violent Nature was first revealed to the world at Sundance, I was giddy with anticipation. As a massive slasher fan, I’ve always wanted a slasher seen through the lens of the killer. There are limitless possibilities and could provide the right spark to reinvent the whole subgenre. At least, that’s what I’ve always believed. But the reaction to the film was mixed, with our own Chris Bumbray giving the film a 6/10. I agree with his assessment, as the film doesn’t entirely come together like I’d want it to. It seems as though the goal was to make a Gus Van Sant film versus to make something that respected and subverted the types of slashers that came before it. Instead, it’s a rather lame affair with more bad acting than you know what to do with.

Genre experimentation rarely feels as invigorating as it does in writer-director Chris Nash’s In a Violent Nature, which employs techniques from slow cinema to amplify the suspense of a slasher tale. Throughout, the camera methodically follows Johnny (Ry Barrett), a hulking undead killer who spends much of the film clad in a centuries-old firefighter mask, as he vengefully lurks and lumbers through the woods.
Be it the patience with which the kills and their lead-ups unfold or the naturalism of the bucolic setting’s sounds, every choice to depart from the expectations and conventions of horror allows Nash to better deliver on the expected output of chills and thrills. But what feels effortless on screen was by no means inevitable. Even taking into account the learning curve facing directors working on their first features, Nash had to deal with technical challenges that compromised his vision for a physically imposing yet psychologically inscrutable monster.

Tearing out of this year’s Sundance Film Festival, In A Violent Nature is one of the ballsiest horror movies of the year. Not just because it’s inventively gory (which it is), but because it dedicates itself to quietness, stillness, and formal experimentation.

Have you ever wanted to see a Friday the 13th movie from Jason Voorhees‘ perspective? What if instead of following around a group of sex-crazed college kids you were just riding shotgun with the killer during his gory rampage through the cursed campground? Well good news you sick, twisted maniac! Chris Nash’s In A Violent Nature is exactly that- A gory forest bound slasher told (almost) exclusively through the eyes of a masked madman back from the dead to seek revenge.
After a group of campers steal a gold locket from a collapsed fire tower, they find themselves hunted by Johnny, the boogeyman of this particular backwoods area. He wants his locket back, and he’ll stop at nothing until it’s in his cold, dead hands again. So, while they smoke pot and drink, tell campfire stories and hook up, Johnny sloooowly makes his way to their camp,...

Writer-director Chris Nash’s feature directorial debut, In a Violent Nature, opens in eerie serenity, with a gorgeously layered image of a forest seen through a deteriorated window frame. Birdsong and gentle breezes take aural precedence, though there are off-screen human voices of an evidently teen-to-twentysomething variety that clash discordantly with all the verdant beauty. The camera eventually tracks laterally, rack-focusing to reveal a locket hanging around a pipe. A hand enters frame, removing the bauble from its perch. Big mistake, as evidenced by the psychotic demon that soon emerges from the peaty earth below.
This is Johnny (Ry Barrett), a hulking, skin-mottled figure so obviously inspired by Friday the 13th’s Jason Voorhees that the hockey-masked undead spree killer could sue for residuals. But Nash and his crew aren’t out to brazenly imitate their forbear so much as affectionately and provocatively rework him and his murderous exploits. The...

After debuting at the Sundance Film Festival in the Midnight section, Chris Nash’s slasher film In a Violent Nature immediately became one of the most buzzed-about horror movies of the year. A clever subversion of the tropes of the genre shot primarily from the killer’s perspective, this is a slow-paced but incredibly eerie horror picture with some absolutely epic kill scenes.

Following the recent news that Chris Nash's critically-acclaimed slasher movie, In A Violent Nature, will be released unrated later this month, IFC Films has shared a new trailer for the highly-anticipated horror flick.
This latest teaser features quite a bit of intense new footage of Johnny stalking his victims, while also spotlighting some dialogue from the unfortunate soon-to-be very dead teens.
To be honest, it's not nearly as effective as the largely silent previous promos, which really presented the movie as something unique for the genre. This comes across very Friday the 13th, and there's even a nod to I Know What You Did Last Summer ("what are you waiting for? We're right here").
Check out the new trailer below along with some old-school lobby cards, and let us know what you think in the comments section.

In his Sundance review, Matt Donato wrote that Chris Nash's In a Violent Nature "...gushes exquisite gore and reimagines the slasher structure with newfound originality," and ahead of its May 31st theatrical release via IFC Films, the film's official trailer teases some of the new movie's macabre moments after a corpse is resurrected for a vengeful rampage in the woods.
Synopsis: When a locket is removed from a collapsed fire tower in the woods that entombs the rotting corpse of Johnny, a vengeful spirit spurred on by a horrific 60-year old crime, his body is resurrected and becomes hellbent on retrieving it. The undead golem hones in on the group of vacationing teens responsible for the theft and proceeds to methodically slaughter them one by one in his mission to get it back - along with anyone in his way.

In 2017, a video game based on the popular horror franchise Friday the 13th was released. That game and another called Dead by Daylight had an option where you get to stalk players as the killer and try to pick them off one by one. The new IFC Films and Shudder original, In a Violent Nature, takes a similar concept and has the audience experience a slasher movie from the point-of-view of the killer. Writer/Director Chris Nash brings us the twisty premise and IFC Films has released a new trailer for all of us to behold.

"What are you waiting for?! We're right here!!" Watch out for this axe-wielding madman!! IFC Films has unveiled another trailer for the acclaimed slasher horror In a Violent Nature, arriving in theaters this May (see the other full trailer). It first premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year to rave reviews praising it as something new. It's described as "a fearless roll of the dice... gushes exquisite gore and reimagines the slasher structure with newfound originality." The gimmick for this one is that it's all from the perspective of the killer - following him as he goes around slashing. This iconic new film tracks an undead, ravenous zombie creature as it makes its way through the woods. Starring Ry Barrett, Andrea Pavlovic, Cameron Love, Reece Presley, Liam Leone, Charlotte Creaghan, Lea Rose Sebastianis, & Sam Roulston. IFC is really putting their marketing might behind this film! Unlike big-budget blockbusters that often depend on famous faces or explosive (and expensive) set pieces to draw audiences into the theater, the horror genre has been thriving for decades with no-name actors, shoestring budgets, and still pulling in huge profits thanks to a quality idea that audiences want to see. If the characters in the film are more than likely not going to make it to the end credits, there's no need to shell out the dough for a household name when they're just going to be killed off.
Fortunately, horror films also frequently inspire unprovoked reactions from audiences that work better than any marketing campaign ever could. A24 struck gold when audience members were reportedly fainting during preview screenings of "Talk to Me," which certainly helped skyrocket the film's popularity and contributed to it becoming the production company's highest-grossing horror film, ever, even surpassing Ari Aster's "Hereditary."

Like Terrifier 2 before it, Bloody Disgusting reports that In A Violent Nature will be released in its unrated form.
The movie doesn't hit theaters until the end of the month, but some audio from a recent Chicago critics screening of writer/director Chris Nash's critically-acclaimed horror flick has now leaked online, and the audience can be heard reacting to what sounds like a shocking, methodical kill.
Though the specifics of this scene have not been shared, we have heard a few details. Without spoiling too much, let's just say that you might think twice about doing yoga after watching this movie!
There have also been reports of people vomiting during this screening, but we're not buying it. We've heard the same thing numerous times, and aside from maybe back in the '70s when The Exorcist was released, it's always been nonsense!

While the Big Easy was still shaking off a slight springtime chill, my horror-loving heart was heating up as I rode the escalator to the third floor of the Canal Place mall: home of the sprawling food court, the terrific Prytania Theaters, and, for this weekend, the official headquarters of the “summer camp for genre fans,” the 2024 Overlook Film Festival!
Taking that second escalator up to the third floor is akin to ascending to horror nirvana, as I was immediately immersed in all manner of the macabre: the Vinegar Syndrome table of essential physical media waited on my right, the Super Yaki merch table of eerie apparel lied straight ahead, and must-see screenings lurk around every corner. After meeting up with fellow Daily Dead team members Jonathan and Christy, we headed to our first screening of the fest: I Don’t Understand You. Film historians are in a perpetual debate about what constitutes the first slasher film, but "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre," "Black Christmas," "Halloween," and "Friday the 13th" all have one thing in common — they were scary as hell. 50 years later in the case of the former two, Leatherface with his chainsaw and Billy's obscene phone calls still manage to terrify new viewers straight out of their skin. Slasher films dominated the horror genre. But as time went on the perspective began to shift to keep things interesting. There were always audiences who showed up to see how the final girl would survive the madness this time, but more and more horror fans were turning in to support their favorite killers. Kills got more inventive, human characters became little more than bodies ripe for slaughter, and successful slasher icons were able to sustain long-running franchises, many of which continue today.

What if “Friday the 13th” was told through Jason Voorhees’ point of view?
First-time feature writer/director Chris Nash’s slasher “In a Violent Nature” focuses on undead serial killer Johnny (Ry Barrett) who stalks new victims in the woods. The killing spree is spurred by the removal of a locket from a collapsed fire tower in the woods that entombs the rotting corpse of Johnny, a spirit seeking revenge after a horrific 60-year old crime. Johnny’s body is resurrected and he becomes hellbent on retrieving the jewelry from a group of vacationing teens. The only way to do it? Methodically slaughtering them one by one. Classic Johnny.
Andrea Pavlovic, Cameron Love, Reece Presley, Liam Leone, Charlotte Creaghan, Lea Rose Sebastianis, Sam Roulston, Alexander Oliver, and Lauren Taylor round out the cast. “In a Violent Nature” is produced by Peter Kuplowsky and Shannon Hanmer.

"Animals don't get too hung up on reason - they just keep killing." IFC Films has debuted the full official trailer for a brutal Canadian horror film titled In a Violent Nature, arriving in theaters this May. It first premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year to rave reviews praising it as something new. Described as "a fearless roll of the dice... gushes exquisite gore and reimagines the slasher structure with newfound originality." The gimmick for this one is that it's all from the Pov of the killer - following him as he goes around slashing. This iconic new horror tracks an undead, ravenous zombie creature as it makes its way through a secluded forest. Starring Ry Barrett, Andrea Pavlovic, Cameron Love, Reece Presley, Liam Leone, Charlotte Creaghan, Lea Rose Sebastianis, and Sam Roulston. Okay sure, this is not entirely Pov, but the cameras stays focused on the killer Johnny,...

Plot: An undead monster is resurrected in the remote wilderness and goes on a rampage.
Review: Stop me if any of this sounds familiar: an undead monster wearing a mask, partying teens getting slashed, and creepy urban legends coming to life. Indeed, director Chris Nash’s In A Violent Nature is unabashedly a slasher film, but it’s distinguished by its unique perspective. Basically, the entire film is shown from the killer’s point of view. The camera very rarely leaves his Pov from the time he is resurrected, showing him walking confusedly through the woods, finding victims, killing them grotesquely, and moving on.
Through it all, Nash mixes techniques, shooting the film in a minimalist art-house style (complete with the now pretentious 1:33:1 aspect ratio) until switching to maximalist gore for some (but not all) of the kills. That means the film often has minimal dialogue as we...

Writer/Director Chris Nash’s feature debut, In a Violent Nature, upends a straightforward Friday the 13th-inspired slasher concept by reframing the events almost entirely from the perspective of the undead killer. That’s not the only massive shift that sets Nash’s slasher apart from conventional fare. In a Violent Nature may offer slasher thrills and a delightfully gory rampage across the wilderness, but Nash’s approach captures the carnage through ambient realism. It results in a fascinating arthouse horror experiment that plays more like a minimalist slice-of-life feature with a grim twist.
The opening frame signals a vastly different type of slasher as unseen voices recount the local legend of the White Pines slaughter as the camera fixates on the remnants of a dilapidated fire tower. Once those voices retreat back to their friend group for a weekend of fun in the woods, undead Johnny (Ry Barrett) awakens...

A high-concept horror movie so casual that it sometimes feels like it doesn’t have any concept at all, Chris Nash’s “In a Violent Nature” is an “ambient slasher” that might owe more to the likes of Terrence Malick and Gus Van Sant than it does to Jason Voorhees and Michael Myers — at least until the part when the unstoppable teen-murderer disembowels a female victim and then twists her entire head through the giant hole he’s carved in her stomach.
Told from its killer’s point of view (except when it’s not), this anemic but formally compelling genre exercise strips the whole madman in a mask routine down to its skeleton. It starts, of course, with some doomed kids in the woods, their voices disembodied long before their limbs will get the chance. Nash frames them out in favor of focusing on the gold necklace the characters...

In A Violent Nature might be Canadian writer and director Chris Nash’s feature debut, but he’s hardly an untested rookie (and it shows). His ABCs of Death 2 segment “Z is for Zygote” teases his knack for producing practical effects and what to expect by the bucket full in his subversive Sundance slasher. Nash’s experience in effects departments, like serving as On-Set Creature Effects Supervisor for Psycho Goreman, translates into a slasher experience that stands pound-for-pound with modern masterclasses of mutilation like the Terrifier series. In A Violent Nature is one of the bloodiest, most punishing, and refreshingly original slashers in some time, but its unique approach will divide horror audiences — that’s the looming risk that comes along with shoot-for-the-moon ambitions.

Slasher movies often droop between grisly highlights due to the weak plotting and cardboard characters meant to lend structural integrity to their shock content. “In a Violent Nature” avoids those pitfalls by pretty much sidestepping entirely the standard niceties of narrative and psychological detail. There is explanatory backstory — however piecemeal and possibly-inaccurate — but otherwise writer-director Chris Nash’s first feature approaches the usual bloody business with a sort of minimalist purity, enabled by focusing almost wholly on the Pov of one Unstoppable Killing Machine.
It’s a gambit that might easily turn monotonous. Yet this Canadian indie manages to keep us engaged, stirring queasy viewer dread if not much outright terror. Premiering in Sundance’s Midnight section, the Shudder Original is slated to begin streaming on that genre platform sometime this spring.

The Sundance Film Festival is one of the most highly respected film festivals in the world, and while the horror genre generally doesn’t seem to receive as much respect as it deserves, horror has had a steady presence at Sundance over the years. In fact, just last year the Sundance horror line-up included the likes of Infinity Pool, Talk to Me, My Animal, and Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls. The Sundance 2024 line-up was revealed earlier today (you can see the list Here) – and there again a good number of horror movies included in the program.
