Plot: A young man struggling with a broken heart learns that his new place is full of restless spirits.
Review: Breakups are tough and have been the fodder for movie plots since the dawn of celluloid. Yet there’s something about Sorry About The Demon that feels very unique. Probably the way it takes the feeling of a breakup and twists the knife with humor. Because imagine going through a bad breakup and being so in the dumps that even the demon that inhabits the house you’re renting doesn’t want your soul. You can see where the laughs are aplenty.
Sorry About The Demon opens with a family being haunted by a demon. They’re told that the demon won’t leave unless they sacrifice someone. Their solution is to have a friendless loser move into the house. This immediately won me because it’s such a ridiculous...

Shudder has revealed an official trailer for an indie horror comedy called Sorry About the Demon, arriving for streaming on Shudder later this month. It's the latest feature from Austin, TX based filmmaker Emily Hagins, known for her other indie films My Sucky Teen Romance, Grow Up Tony Phillips, & Coin Heist. "What's worse than getting dumped?" For Will, it's finding out that his new place is haunted. Now faced with a quarter-life crisis and a house full of spirits, Will must figure out how to make things right with his ex-girlfriend And banish the sacrifice-seeking demon residing in his house. Poppy tunes open Vo Thanh Hoa’s screen adaptation of Kenji Uchida’s “Key of Life” (2012), following the first action scene that introduces one of the film’s three key characters – Thach (Kieu Minh Tuan), a notorious assasin who’s seen completing his task and then disappearing from the crime scene. In just a couple of minutes he will shake of a bunch of armed criminals by swiftly changing roles from one type of servant to the other, to be ridiculously defeated by a simple bar of soap. Just like in Kenji’s original, the fantom assasin gets knocked unconscious in a bath house, and wakes up with amnesia and a wrong locker key in his hand, logically believing to be someone else.

After the 2000s seemingly kickstarted a new wave of independent horror, the 2010s (and beyond) were an exceptional time for new and emerging, as well as established, filmmakers to leave their own mark on the landscape of genre storytelling. One of the most notable aspects, or even trends, that I noticed while doing research for this entire series of retrospectives is how out of all of the decades, it feels like the 2010s was one of the best times for female filmmakers to get the opportunity to take the helm in comparison to other decades. The 1980s had a handful of women directors working in independent horror, but during both the ’90s and ’00s, it felt like the industry as a whole had taken a few steps backwards in providing female filmmakers the opportunity to tell the stories they wanted to tell.
Thankfully, though, the door swung back open in...

One of my favorite horror anthologies to come out in some time is Scare Package, which was conceived by Aaron B. Koontz and Cameron Burns and features an array of filmmaking talent, including Emily Hagins, Chris McInroy, Noah Segan, Baron Vaughn, Anthony Cousins, and Courtney and Hillary Andujar. The film hits Shudder exclusively today, and to mark the occasion, Daily Dead recently spoke with Koontz about the project, and how it was a labor of love created between him and a group of friends.
Koontz also discussed why it was important to him that Scare Package became a showcase for those who had been cutting their teeth in the world of short films, celebrating what fans love about the horror genre, and how Aew wrestler Dustin Rhodes got involved with Scare Package to pull off a very special role in the film.

Ask any fan of horror and they will tell you that to be a horror fan transcends mere love of the genre. Horror goes beyond the content of the films, it’s a community. Horror has its own rules and tropes that are gospel to those that speak the language of the films. For horror fans, there is a rite of passage and a ritual to knowing certain films by heart and recognizing titans of the both the films and the broader world surrounding them. Scare Package understands this and delivers a perfectly packaged film as a gift to the community and fans of horror everywhere.
Scare Package is the creation of Aaron B. Koontz (Camera Obscura) & Cameron Burns. The film is an anthology of short horror segments that are brilliantly woven into a larger, overarching story. Seven directors flex their horror skills and enjoy a playground of tropes and twists,...

Tagline: "7 Directors. 7 Tales of Terror. 0 Working Cell Phones." Scare Package is a horror anthology. From the minds of seven different directors, this release is slated for a showing on Shudder, this Summer. On opening night of Sundance 2018, writer-director Tamara Jenkins premiered her new film “Private Life” to rave reviews. The New York drama was headed for derailment when she submitted it to Netflix Indie Content directors of content Ian Bricke and his lieutenant Matt Levin; they loved her script about an infertile middle-aged couple (Paul Giamatti and Kathryn Hahn) desperately trying to have a child by any means necessary. The drama turned out so well that Netflix is holding it for the fall festival circuit.
Among those in Eccles Theater seeing “Private Life” for the first time was Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos. That’s because if a film is budgeted under $10 million, he delegates full greenlight authority to Bricke, who pushed the $9 million “Private Life” into production and approved the last-minute casting of unknown actress Kayli Carter.

February is known as Women in Horror Month, when the spotlight is put on female filmmakers working inside our favorite genre, and many horror sites run pieces about movies directed by women. And that’s great! But there’s no reason why that spotlight should be limited to only one month, particularly when there are so many brilliant and talented female filmmakers working in the genre. Why not use this October to hit up these titles on Shudder and get to know some of the most exciting female voices in horror right now?
Prevenge (2016, dir. Alice Lowe) Alice Lowe writes, directs, and stars in this darkly comic, twisted fantasy about a woman who is very, very pregnant (Lowe herself was pregnant during shooting) and goes on a killing spree when her unborn baby talks to her and tells her to take revenge for a past tragedy. You time is valuable, and so are both services for different reasons.War Machine (Netflix)
Although there may be a competition going on between Amazon and Netflix for subscribers, the truth is that both company’s streaming services are essential for anyone who watches a lot of movies and TV and who wants to be part of the pop culture conversations as they happen.
There’s no denying that Amazon Prime is worth the $99/year, which not only gives you access to many movies but also a good amount of music streaming and digital media access, plus faster shipping for when you actually want some sort of physical product (you can also just get video content for $8.99/month, which oddly means paying more for less).
And Netflix is still a must-have for both its exclusive and nonexclusive content, though depending on one’s usage could be best for sporadic membership rather than continued subscription — now at $120/year...

If The Breakfast Club and Ocean’s 11 were shoved into Seth Brundle’s telepods, Coin Heist is the unholy abomination that would stagger out the other end, pressing a shotgun to its malformed head and begging to be put out of its misery.
Based on the young adult novel by Elisa Ludwig, Coin Heist opens with a group of students on a field trip to the Us Mint, their slack-jawed un-enthusiasm only briefly lifting when the cops show up and drag their principal away in handcuffs. It turns out he’s embezzled $10 million from the school funding, putting the very institution itself in jeopardy.
And so, hacker Alice (Alexis G. Zall), athlete Benny (Jay Walker). honor student Dakota (Sasha Pieterse) and slacker (and the embezzling principal’s son) Jason (Alex Saxon), band together to save the school. Their plan: break into the Us Mint, secretly manufacture quarters with a flaw...

Fresh off its announcement that a second season of the Miranda Sings sitcom Haters Back Off is coming in 2017, Netflix is poised to expand its slate of projects involving digital creators like Colleen Ballinger and Cameron Dallas.
On Jan. 6, Netflix will exclusively premiere Coin Heist, a feature film about four teens from a Philadelphia prep school who hatch a plan to rob the U.S. Mint of $10 million during a class field trip. Though it’s not necessarily an influencer-driven projects, two digital creators occupy starring rolls: YouTube creator Alexis G. Zall and Viner Jay Walker. Coin Heist, adapted from a young adult novel and produced by Adaptive Studios, was directed by Emily Hagins and also stars Sasha Pieterse (Pretty Little Liars) and Alex Saxon (The Fosters).

"You realize if this doesn't go perfectly, we are all going to jail." Netflix has debuted a trailer for the film Coin Heist, the latest little indie from young filmmaker Emily Hagins out of Austin. We've featured her work before, including her most recent film before this, titled Grow Up Tony Phillips. Coin Heist is indeed about a "coin heist" - four different high school kids decide to team up and figure out a way to break into the U.S. Mint and pay off a big debt by planting flawed coins. The cast includes Alex Saxon, Alexis G. Zall, Sasha Pieterse, Jay Walker, Blanche Baker, David W. Thompson and Elijah Boothe. This looks like it might be fun, and I always like supporting talented young filmmakers like Emily. Give it a look below. Here's the first official trailer for Emily Hagins' Coin Heist, direct from Netflix's YouTube: United by dire circumstances,...

2016 is hereby declared the year of the female filmmaker.
A few exceptions aside, for several years, a spot in the director’s chair seemed like a seat reserved only for those in the boys’ club. However, a revolution has been quietly brimming beneath the surface, with more and more women stepping behind the camera as of late and genre films leading the way in this massive reconstruction. Game changers like Jennifer Kent, Marjane Satrapi and Veronika Franz have been stepping up and proving themselves as not only worthy contenders when it comes to noteworthy women who make movies, but equally as skilled as any male photographer.
While there are many exciting projects on the horizon to be helmed by talented ladies, this list is dedicated to a few of the most striking pictures that are set to release soon. Read on to learn about these thrilling new prospects, and find...

With the release of Captain America: Civil War less than two weeks off, Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is about to shift into overdrive. It may be a long time before Captain Marvel sees action in 2019, but is it possible that Marvel’s already got the perfect lead actress and director in mind?
During this week’s episode of Meet The Movie Press, The Wrap’s Jeff Sneider had some interesting insight into the forthcoming Captain Marvel flick. Although cryptic, Sneider did offer up a curious possibility.
“There was a rumour about an actress being up for it; an already existing rumour, that’s not new. I’ve definitely heard there’s some truth to that rumour, and that there’s a director with the same first name who has also been eyed. I don’t think that [an announcement] is too far off. The rise of digital filmmaking has likely directly contributed to the dip in age of widely exposed filmmakers. The latter, an eighteen years-old actor, has…

For the final week of September, we’ll be seeing a handful of indie genre titles coming our way to DVD and Blu-ray, as well as several cult classics, including the original Leprechaun films, finally making their high-def debut on Tuesday.

For those of you horror fans looking for something a bit more ‘seasoned’, both Krull and Killer Fish are getting their Blu-ray treatment this week and should make for excellent additions to your home entertainment collection.

We’re big horror geeks here at Movies.com, but we’re even geekier for talented women who make horror movies. In this case, we’re talking about 14-year-old Emily Diprimio who is a card-carrying member of the fright-flick fan club. She recently directed her own movie called Carver, which is a throwback to the slasher films of the 1980s. The whole project started when she was only 13. Diprimio is reminiscent of another favorite female filmmaker — Grow Up, Tony Phillips director Emily Hagins, who made her indie horror film Pathogen at 12. Diprimio used Kickstarter to fund Carver, which is currently in postproduction. In anticipation of the final film, Emily has released a trailer for Carver, which shows a lot of promise. In the early stages of the project...

I don't know what it is about young girls named Emily, but they seem to have a penchant for making horror films. First came 12-year-old Emily Hagins, who directed the zombie movie Pathogen, and then came 13-year-old Emily Diprimio, who dreamed of making an 80s-style slasher called Carver.
If that project sounds familiar to you, it's probably because we covered it here on Dread last September, when the Kickstarter campaign was launched for the film. Almost exactly one year later, to the day, the trailer for the successfully funded slasher has arrived, and we invite you to check it out below!

My last movie for SXSW this year was the amusing Space Station 76, at Stateside. I planned to walk a little bit around downtown afterward and maybe take some photos of various interesting SXSW sights, if it didn't rain again. I chatted a little outside the theater with local actor Sam Eidson (Zero Charisma, SXSW 2013), who was still planning to see movies that day. I almost literally ran into Austin filmmaker Emily Hagins (Grow Up, Tony Phillips, SXSW 2013) as I walked down Congress to Sixth.
As I was passing Wholly Cow Burgers, a musician was playing a guitar under the awning, a frequent sight during non-rainy SXSW days. He looked so energetic and happy that I snapped his photo a couple of times, and we exchanged waves. I stopped briefly to listen and liked the music -- not a crappy cover pandering to passersby, not someone loudly learning to play.

While it has long been popular for the horror genre to put female performers in the spotlight in front of the camera, female directors working in the horror genre are too-often pushed to the sidelines. However, the last couple of years has seen a huge surge in the number of women directing horror movies, in a charge led by the likes of Jen & Sylvia Soska (American Mary), Helene Cattet (Amer, The Strange Colour of Your Body's Tears), Emily Hagins (Grow Up Tony Phillips, My Sucky Teen Romance) and Jennifer Lynch (Chained, Surveillance), and in the world of short films, names like Axelle Carolyn, Jovanka Vuckovic and Isabel Peppard are proving increasingly synonymous with the horror genre. Emily Diprimio dropped ShockTillYouDrop.com a line this morning to inform us of a slasher film she's embarking on called Carver.
According to this page, the film "is about a group of teenagers who are haunted by a despicable act they committed on Halloween when they were younger. Their actions caused the deaths of three innocent people. Now, on the anniversary of those deaths, an ominous calling card in the form of a carved pumpkin has been placed at each of their homes. Someone is out for revenge. The question is...who?"
Here's the thing: Emily is 13.
Yes, echoing shades of "Zombie Girl" Emily Hagins (who directed a zombie film at age 12 and is now making features), Emily Diprimio is out to carve (so to speak) a filmmaking career early on in life. Inside, check out her Kickstarter video and for more details, click here!

It was life imitating art because the song played repeatedly throughout the movie. I even felt kind of bad that I was jammin' out to the song in my head while characters were being slaughtered left and right on screen.

The last time Austin-based filmmaker Emily Hagins went trick-or-treating was her senior year of high school, when her friends wanted to show a French foreign exchange student what the holiday was like in America.
That was two years ago.
"(I)t was really, really weird because we were getting weird looks, but the (French) girl was having a blast," Hagins said. "She had no idea that we were too old to be doing this."
The idea that certain childhood passions have no expiration date is explored in Hagins' fourth feature film Grow Up, Tony Phillips (Elizabeth's review). Because age, after all, is just a number. The movie is scheduled to hit VOD platforms this Halloween and later home video through Rogue Arts, an indie distributor that first approached the film's creators after its SXSW Film Festival premiere this year.
