It’s definitely not a bad time to be a fan of all things mutants. Though Fox’s X-Men franchise looked to be in rough shape following Apocalypse, it’s bounced back in a big way recently. James Mangold’s stunning Logan is still wow’ing audiences around the world, and Legion is taking the small screen by storm. Aside from those, there are also a number of upcoming efforts to look forward to, like Deadpool 2 and X-Force, among others. Suffice it to say, the mutants are stronger than ever right now.
One project that’s quickly been gathering buzz is the studio’s untitled X-Men TV show from Matt Nix, which has Bryan Singer set to direct the pilot. It’s been on a bit of a casting spree lately and with all the roles now filled, it appears as if production is about to fire up. We...

The Untitled X-Men series set up at Fox is rounding out its cast. The Matt Nix-created series cast Stephen Moyer earlier this week, and now THR reports that Amy Acker, Emma Dumont, and Percy Hynes White have signed on to the show.
Of course, fans of Joss Whedon will be familiar with Acker, who had significant roles in Angel and Dollhouse and brought down the house as Beatrice in his Much Ado About Nothing. She also spent several seasons on Person of Interest. Acker will play Kate Stewart, “a woman who is struggling with her separation from her husband, Reed (the aforementioned Moyer), and her increasingly challenging teenage children. When her family situation takes a dark turn, she finds that she's stronger than she thinks.”
I’m sure you all remember Dumont as a ballerina/roller derby girl on Bunheads, because GeekTyrant readers were definitely among the ten people who watched that show.

Rebecca Front is heading to Doctor Who.
The Thick of It actress will reunite with her former co-star Peter Capaldi when she appears in the forthcoming Zygon two-parter later this year.
Details of the role she will play in the episodes are currently a closely guarded secret.
Front will also reunite with Jenna Coleman, whom she starred alongside in BBC One period drama Death Comes to Pemberley.
The Zygon two-parter will also feature the returns of Jemma Redgrave as Kate Stewart and Ingrid Oliver as Osgood.
Peter Harness has penned the story, which is said to have an enormous cliffhanger.
Michelle Gomez will also return as Missy in the opening episodes of series 9, while Rufus Hound, Paul Kaye, Jaye Griffiths and Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams will also guest star during the series.

A shining new chapter for the world’s longest running sci-fi programme began last year when Peter Capaldi finally burst on to our screens as the twelfth incarnation of the Doctor.
The good news is that his era at the honourable helm of time and space is only just getting started and he definitely hit the ground running with a jam packed first series which culminated in the shock reveal of Michelle Gomez as the first female incarnation of our hero’s arch nemesis, the Master.
Capaldi’s debut string of adventures were widely cited as one of the best series of NuWho to date so it’s certainly going to be a tough act to follow. From what’s been revealed about Series 9 thus far, however, it’s only going to get bigger and better.

It has been announced that Osgood will be returning to Doctor Who… and she’s bringing the Zygons back with her!
The popular character – who has been a fan favourite since her first appearance in The Day of the Doctor – was dramatically killed by Missy during the Series 8 finale but it was confirmed today that “anything can happen” as Ingrid Oliver will be reprising the role for Episodes 7 and 8 of the upcoming ninth series.
And that’s not all! The Unit scientist will also be accompanied by the Zygons who cloned her in the 50th anniversary special, which suggests that the Doctor might not be able to trust his biggest fan this time.
Ingrid Oliver commented:
“As every actor who’s worked on Doctor Who will tell you, there’s aways the secret hope you’ll get the call asking you to come back. To actually receive that call is both unexpected and brilliant.

Steven Moffat is undoing one of Doctor Who's cruellest twists - by bringing Osgood (Ingrid Oliver) back from the dead.
The loveable Unit scientist will return for a new two-part adventure, alongside colleague Kate Stewart (Jemma Redgrave).
Osgood last featured in series 8's finale, 'Death in Heaven', and was killed by the maniacal Missy (Michelle Gomez).
Also returning to Doctor Who are classic monsters the Zygons, shape-shifting aliens first introduced in 1975 and last featured in 2013's 50th anniversary special, 'The Day of the Doctor'.
Moffat had previously expressed his desire to bring back the Zygons, following their reappearance in the celebratory episode.
Of Osgood's own return, he said: "Osgood is back, fresh from her recent murder at the end of last series. We recently confirmed that Osgood was definitely dead and not returning - but in a show about time travel, anything can happen.
"The brilliant Ingrid Oliver is back in action.

Big Finish is finally entering current Doctor Who continuity with the Unit Extinction adventures, but what does that mean?
During Doctor Who’s 50th anniversary celebrations, everybody had their own favourite moments. Maybe yours was seeing Matt Smith and David Tennant sparring with each other. Maybe it was the “all thirteen!” moment on Gallifrey, seeing Tom Baker turn up at the end to say “Hi! I’m Tom Baker! How cool is that?”, or watching Peter Davison and Colin Baker try and break into the BBC. There was no shortage of punch-the-air moments for fans. But as someone who spent nearly every moment of the anniversary bouncing up and down and literally clapping my hands with glee, the highpoint came towards the end of Paul McGann’s Eighth Doctor short, The Night of the Doctor. Just before he regenerates, he utters the words “Charlie, C'rizz, Lucy, Tamsin, Molly, friends, companions I've known,...

Jemma Redgrave will return as Kate Stewart for Big Finish’s audio Doctor Who spin-off Unit: Extinction…
Good news, Whovians – Kate Stewart is getting her own Big Finish audio series, we’ve learnt today. That’s right, the daughter of Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart and Head Of Scientific Research at the Unified Intelligence Taskforce is set to headline her own adventures.
These adventures will be dubbed Unit: Extinction and will see Jemma Redgrave return to the role that she has played several times on the small screen (most recently in the Doctor Who series 8 finale, Death In Heaven).
Since making her debut in The Power Of Three, otherwise a not-particularly-revered instalment, Redgrave’s Kate has become something of a fan favourite, thanks to her authoritative performance and the character’s links to Who lore. This combined with Big Finish's sterling reputation has our confidence levels nice and high.

The biggest problem I have with the Doctor Who series 8 finale, “Death in Heaven,” is really a compliment: there wasn’t enough Missy (Michelle Gomez). The female incarnate of the Master is one of the most enjoyable villains I’ve seen in a long time, on television or in the movies. She’s a wicked blend of Bond nemesis and evil Mary Poppins (with a dash of Marilyn Monroe impersonation), and it’s probably for the best that I was left wanting more. That’s usually a sign that the desired element was employed just enough. I got the impression that her “death” is more her teleporting away just in time, so it’s likely the rival Time Lord will be back in the future, but it’s unlikely that Gomez will be playing him/her. Hopefully it’s not the last we see of her in general. The current era of 007 movies could use an Irma...

Well folks, this is it. We made it to the series 8 finale for “Doctor Who.” After tonight, we will be bereft of Time Lord shenanigans until the Christmas special. Let’s savor every last gut-wrenching moment of “Death In Heaven.” ****** Things pick up right where we left off last week in “Dark Water.” The solitary Cyberman in the office with Clara is on the warpath. But it’s the slow, plodding warpath “Who” villains save for main characters. Instead of vaporizing her on the spot, the Cyberman hesitates just long enough for Clara to be very clever. There is no Clara Oswald. There never was. She was a figment of the Doctor’s imagination. Clara is, in actuality, the Doctor. Jenna Coleman sells this monologue so hard that not only is the Cyberman convinced, but I’m half hoping that this is the twist of the season. How amazing would...

Kate Stewart
Portrayed by: Jemma Redgrave
Doctor: Eleventh Doctor
Story: 2 stories, “The Power of Three” (Sept, 2012) and “The Day of the Doctor” (Nov, 2013)
Background: Kate Stewart is one of the leaders of Unit, rising through its ranks to become the Head of Scientific Research and working to restructure it to follow her father’s advice that, “science leads”.
Family/Friends: Kate is the daughter of classic series Companion Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart and his first wife, Fiona. Though she speaks of her father fondly (he passed away fairly recently), we know very little else about her family or friends.
Personality: Kate is intelligent, thoughtful, and very professional. She is efficient and somewhat brusque in her demeanor, but she also has a quiet smile and a playful, if dry, sense of humor and much like her father, is made of stern stuff, willing to go to great lengths to protect humanity.

Jackie Tyler
Portrayed by: Camille Coduri
Doctor: Ninth Doctor, Tenth Doctor
Story: 4 stories, from “The Parting of the Ways” (June, 2005) to “Journey’s End” (July, 2008), though she appears in several other stories as Rose’s mother or Pete’s wife, separate from the adventure of the week.
Background: Jackie is the single mother of the teenaged Rose when her life is turned upside down by Rose joining the Doctor in the Tardis. She ends up embroiled in several of the Doctor’s adventures. Despite her (comparatively) lengthy association with the series, we know very little about her outside of her relationship with her daughter.
Family/Friends: Jackie married Pete Tyler and the two had a somewhat contentious relationship, despite caring for each other deeply. When Rose was a baby, Pete died after being hit by a car. An adult version of Rose was there at the time and held Pete while he passed,...

(all spoilers! don’t read till you’ve seen the episode… or unless you don’t care if it’s spoiled for you. this is a love fest only — all complaints and bitching must come from a place of love / previous: “The Name of the Doctor”)
I’ve been hard on Steven Moffat during his tenure as Doctor Who showrunner, and with, I think, good reason: He appears to value cool ideas over creating a satisfying story to convey those ideas. He has not been kind to his female characters. And he’s constantly painting himself into narrative corners and then skipping out on even attempting to extricate himself. So I was kind of dreading to see what he would do with such an important moment as the show’s half-century mark.
But he got it right with “The Day of the Doctor.” He got it really, really right.

It’s not often you get to describe an event as being fifty years in the making. even less so do you get to mean it. Three Doctors in three timelines converge to give them all a chance to change a terrible moment in their collective past.
The Day of the Doctor
by Steven Moffat
Directed by Nick Hurran
The Doctor is in the present, in his most recent incarnation, picking up Clara, when he gets picked up himself, by Unit, to investigate a mystery at the National Museum. Meanwhile (well, I say meanwhile…) in his previous incarnation, he’s investigating a mystery in Elizabethan Britain, an attack by the Zygons that could lead all the way to the Queen herself. And in another part of the Universe entirely, The War Doctor is making a decision that will put the lives of countless innocents in his hands, a choice that...

Our Doctor has finally come back to us! After six months that felt like six decades, the brilliant, impossible Time Lord has returned to our televisions. On this occasion, he has been summoned not just to show us the continuing wonder of time and space but to commemorate his day, the day of the Doctor, a full half century since he made his first appearance. It’s nearly unfathomable longevity, but then again he’s the Doctor, so stop being surprised.
Let this be an opportunity, then, for us to celebrate that daft old man in the blue box for his 50 years of falling from the stars and sweeping us away in his magical machine, 50 years of saving the universe with wit and compassion, 50 years of running. And the times we’ve had, huh?
And how better to celebrate those times than by beginning another adventure. So, off we go.

The most eagerly awaited Doctor Who episode ever finally aired on Saturday, simulcast in several countries, as well as being shown in some selected theaters. Did the 75 minute special live up to expectations or was it a ‘Boo Who’? Come inside to see our thoughts on The Day of the Doctor.
With many months of hyped build-up, as well as 50 years of fan expectations, the Doctor Who 50th anniversary special “The Day of the Doctor” had an uphill climb to fulfill expectations. Happily, it succeeded. While not the best episode ever for the series, it hit enough of the right notes to be an excellent tribute to the show’s long history.
Writer/show-runner Steven Moffat was wise to veer away from the high concept, end-of-the-universe plots that tend to dominate special episodes of Doctor Who. There were two storylines competing for screen time here. One plot was a standard...

The two trailers for The Day Of The Doctor are laden with hints. We take a closer look...
"There's one life I've tried very hard to forget"
Two new footage trailers for Doctor Who: The Day Of The Doctor have landed this weekend. You can see the shorter one here and the longer one here. But what have they shown us? Well, for starters, it seems that those popping off to see the episode in the cinema are likely to be well rewarded. There's no shortage of cinematic moments in the trailers alone, from big explosions, to hanging over Trafalgar Square, to several doses of expensive-looking action. Also, the spark between David Tennant and Matt Smith is already clear, and there's going to be an awful lot of fun when the two get to share the screen. The redecorating line alone is perfect.

The first video has been released from "Doctor Who's" 50th anniversary and it's creating quite a bit of mystery. In the photo, a woman has a painting uncovered for the Doctor (Matt Smith) and Clara (Jenna Coleman). She says the work is "Elizabeth's credentials," most likely meaning Queen Elizabeth I, who will appear in the episode. Update: As pointed out in the comments below, the voice presenting the painting to the Doctor and Clara sounds like it belongs to Kate Stewart (Jemma Redgrave) of Unit.
What is the painting of, though? It looks like a world being destroyed. There is no definite answer, but the most likely candidate seems to be it's Gallifrey (the Doctor's home world) during the Last Great Time War.
What implications will this have on the episode, and how does it involve John Hurt's dark Doctor? Thus far, the consensus seems to be...

Doctor Who fans have been been left on tenterhooks ever since John Hurt unexpectedly appeared in the season 7 finale to set up the 50th Anniversary Special The Day Of The Doctor, and the BBC continued to fan the anticipation by releasing new stills from filming.
While it still isn’t altogether clear who or what Hurt is – and let’s face it, he could be anything, from Eight-And-a-Half, the Valeyard or something completely different – the new photos show Hurt at the Tardis controls and with what appears to be a red sonic screwdriver, so make of that what you will.
Also, fans already pleased at the appearance of David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor – marking the first time two New Who Doctors have shared the screen since the series’ revival – will likely be thrilled at the presence of the old Tardis set, hinted at in another picture.

Crossing one’s own timeline is a cardinal sin for a time traveler. Walking over one’s grave even worse. So when The Doctor is forced to do that…
The Name Of The Doctor

Directed by Saul Metzstein
Re-appearing after its defeat a year previous, The Great Intelligence forces The Doctor to the location of his grave, wherein is hidden the physical manifestation of his timeline, a map of his life, which in the hands of the wrong people could be used to re-write his life. The Intelligence chooses to do so, at the cost of its own existence. The only way to save The Doctor, and all the good works he did, is with another sacrifice.
Emotionally, the episode worked exceedingly well. We got a solid River Song story, one where we finally see The Doctor admit his feeling for her. But narratively, we’re very...

So let’s get this out of the way: As anyone who’s read my other articles knows, River Song is a great idea but a wasted opportunity in my opinion. She showed up with a fascinating set of questions and character, and turned out to be one note innuendoes and the most obvious origin in the Universe once all the pieces fell into place. Anyone who was shocked by her parentage would have to ignore the fact that the suspects in the lineup were numbering, er, two. And now, that leaves her to show up, carry a gun, spout off some flirty tripe once a season. Suddenly, “Torchwood Season 5″ sounds comparatively awesome….

In a absence of fact, rumor and Clever Theories rush in to fill the vacuum. And considering the security surrounding The 50th anniversary Doctor Who adventure, and the ravenous hunger of the public for details, there’s no doubt the media is falling over itself to deliver any snippet it can, real or imagined. So far the actual facts are few and far between. It will be broadcast in 3-D Whether or not there will be any cinematic presentations in that format is unkown, but wouldn’t be a bad idea. We know of only one other Doctor who will appear – namely David Tennant, with Billie Piper returning as Rose Tyler. No news on from what point of his history this even will take place, however, though based on their costuming, it’s a fair bet Tennant is playing the proper Doctor and not “Doctor Two”, the one from Pete’s world.

Filming is now under way for the 90 minute Doctor Who 50th Anniversary special, coming in the fall. The special will be aired in 3D, and David Tennant will return, reprising his role as the 10th Doctor. And he may not be the only former Doctor we see.
While the current season of the BBC’s popular Doctor Who program counts down to the season finale, film is rolling on the 50th anniversary special, which will air in November, the same month that the original pilot episode of Doctor Who aired in 1963. David Tennant is currently filming scenes where he reprises the role of Doctor 10. Along with him is Billie Piper, who will again play the 10th Doctor’s traveling companion/romantic interest Rose Tyler.

Paul McGann has said that he will not rule out any involvement in Doctor Who's 50th anniversary special.
Matt Smith and Jenna-Louise Coleman will be joined by returning stars David Tennant and Billie Piper for the special, but a BBC source recently told Digital Spy that Christopher Eccleston has chosen not to take part.
McGann - who played the Eighth Doctor - offered his own opinions on the anniversary to Zbtv by suggesting that Eccleston's decision not to appear could mean changes to showrunner Steven Moffat's plans.
"I think Chris Eccleston is probably a big factor in it. I don't want to speak for him... he's probably reluctant to get involved in anything that's ongoing," McGann said.
He continued: "So that's something that they have to somehow get over and deal with. I'm guessing they've got time to do it. It's not quite the anniversary yet. The anniversary doesn't start until November.

Doctor Who stars Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy have again expressed doubts about whether they will feature at all in the 50th anniversary special.
Baker, McCoy and Eighth Doctor actor Paul McGann are currently in Australia, while an anniversary episode starring Matt Smith, Jenna-Louise Coleman and David Tennant is being shot in the UK.
The classic series actors were asked about the 50th anniversary special while appearing on Channel Nine in Australia, but both McCoy and Baker cautioned fans not to expect them to appear alongside Smith and Tennant.
"There actually making it now as we're here [in Australia], so the likelihood is [we're not in it]," Baker joked.
McCoy added: "All the fanbases all over the world believe [we should be involved], but not the producers [of Doctor Who]."
Former Sixth Doctor actor Baker went on admit that he understands why the older Doctors were not invited back for the anniversary.
"I look nothing like what I looked like originally, so the viewers would be very confused,...
