The estate of Sparklehorse, the indie rock project of the late singer-songwriter Mark Linkous, has unveiled a posthumous new album called Bird Machine. The LP arrives today, September 8th via Anti- Records.
Linkous began working on his fifth Sparklehorse album with Steve Albini in 2009. He tragically died by suicide the following year, but he left behind handwritten notes featuring Bird Machine’s title and tracklist — and according to his brother Matt and sister-in-law Melissa, songs that were already close to completion.
The quality of the songs helped Matt and Melissa — who have worked as Linkous’ archivists since his death — decide to finish and release Bird Machine, though Matt called it the hardest choice he’s ever made. “It’s difficult making a choice about someone else’s art, even if you’ve known them all your life and worked with them, even if they were your brother and best friend,...

The 2022 Grammy Awards broadcast wrapped up with an upset victory of sorts, with Jon Batiste beating out the likes of Taylor Swift and Kanye west to take home Album of the Year for his excellent “We Are.”
That was his fifth win of the night, following four wins during the “Premiere Ceremony,” where all of the awards not deemed cool enough for television were handed out, hosted by the always wonderful Levar Burton.
Batiste also accomplished a rather ignominious milestone for the Grammy Awards themselves: He’s the first Black artist to win Album of the Year since Herbie Hancock back in 2008. You read that right: It’s literally been 14 years and 3 presidents since the Academy recognized the work of Black artists with this honor. And in case you’re wondering, the only nonwhite artist to win Best Album during that time was Bruno Mars in 2018.
Speaking of Mars, Batiste...
