After naming Alfonso Cuarón the best director of the 21st century, Metacritic has gone ahead and averaged out filmmakers’ Metascores to name the worst directors since 2000. As with the first list, filmmakers must have made at least four movies in the last 17 years to be eligible — meaning that Tom Six (“The Human Centipede”) and Dinesh D’Souza (“Hillary’s America”) don’t qualify despite the fact that they’re far from critical darlings.

For Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos, the past few weeks were a good reminder of why they toiled for 10 years to make the Netflix documentary series “Making A Murderer.”
Just days after being honored by the Television Critics Association for Outstanding Achievement in Reality Television, the filmmakers got even bigger news: A judge had overturned the conviction of Brendan Dassey, one of the subjects of their series.
Dassey had been convicted, in addition to his uncle Steven Avery, for the 2005 murder of photographer Teresa Halbach. But viewers of “Making a Murderer” know that Avery’s and Dassey’s convictions were fraught with questions, inconsistencies and controversies.

Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos will follow their popular Netflix series Making A Murderer with an adaptation of the Huffington Post story "America's Most Admired Lawbreaker," according to Paste.
"America's Most Admired Lawbreaker," an article written by journalist Steven Brill, traces "the inside story" of Johnson & Johnson, the company that made billions of dollars marketing a harmful drug, Risperdal, to children and the elderly. Legal action against the company resulted in a $2 billion settlement, but Johnson & Johnson brought in $30 billion from sales of the drug. Brill's serialized report is divided into 15 parts.

George Clooney and Grant Heslov's Smokehouse Pictures is set to team with Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos, the creators of Netflix sensation "Making a Murderer," for a new scripted TV project.
"America's Most Admired Lawbreaker" follows the story of a venerable pharmaceutical company which created a powerful drug and marketed it aggressively to children and the elderly while allegedly manipulating and hiding data about its side effects.
The company was investigated and has to pay more than $2 billion in penalties and settlements - not a problem as they made a reported $30 billion in sales of the drug worldwide.
Nicki Paluga will also help to adapt the series which is based on the Huffington Post series of articles by journalist Steven Brill. A network is not yet attached and it's uncertain how many episodes will make up this event series.

Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos, the directing duo who spent over a decade helming Making A Murderer -- a true crime docuseries that became one of Netflix’s most popular original shows -- have announced their follow-up project.
Ricciardi and Demos will direct a scripted TV show based on a series of articles written by the journalist Steven Brill for The Huffington Post called America’s Most Admired Lawbreaker. The articles recount how Johnson & Johnson marketed a powerful drug called Risperidal toward children and the elderly, while covering up its side effects and making billions of dollars in the process.
It is unclear how many episodes the show will comprise, and which network might carry the series, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Nicki Paluga, a noted writer and producer, will help the duo adapt the project.

"I wish I could start from scratch, just get it right this time..." Yep, this is a "don't watch" - did anyone even see The Ridiculous 6? I don't anyone who did. This is the next Netflix collaboration with Adam Sandler and it looks just as forgettable. Netflix has debuted this trailer for their new comedy The Do-Over, starring Adam Sandler and his long-time friend David Spade. The cast includes Paula Patton, Kathryn Hahn, Sean Astin, Luis Guzmán and Nick Swardson. The concept is intriguing, but that's about it - two guys try to reinvent themselves and end up getting into more trouble than they were expecting. This looks awful. Here's the first official trailer for Steven Brill's The Do-Over, direct from Netflix's YouTube: The life of a bank manager is turned upside down when a friend from his past manipulates him into faking his own death and taking off on an adventure.

Adam Sandler will unite with David Spade, Nick Swardson and Rob Schneider for The Do-Over comedy tour, which features seven American performances in May. The brief jaunt, presented by Netflix and featuring "special guests," will kick off May 19th in San Francisco and conclude on the 27th in Uncasville, Connecticut, according to a post on Sandler's Facebook.
The final show coincides with the Netflix premiere of Sandler's latest film, The Do-Over, in which he and Spade fake their own deaths in an attempt at a new life, only to discover...

Adam Sandler's next Netflix project, The Do-Over, will arrive May 27th and has received its first action-packed teaser.
The 30-second spot doesn't offer much in the way of details, but does pack in plenty of blockbuster tropes played for laughs. There's overzealous gun play, an outrageous car crash, women in bikinis giggling at an ostensibly male butt and one quick exchange of dialog between Sandler and his co-star, David Spade. "You sure about this, tough guy?" Sandler says. "Fuck yes," Spade replies.

Following The Ridiculous Six, Adam Sandler has nearly finished his second Netflix movie, The Do-Over. Here's the trailer.
Chortles are incoming, chums. Adam Sandler, as you may know, inked a deal for four films to be released as Netflix exclusives. The first, The Ridiculous Six, landed last year. And now, he’s already churned out another, in the shape of The Do-Over.
This one co-stars David Spade and Paula Patton, and it tells the story of a bank manager, who fakes his own death and heads off on an adventure.
Steve Brill (Little Nicky, Mr Deeds) directs this one, and Sandler doesn’t appear to have written this one himself. Instead, Kevin Barnett and Chris Pappas have penned the script.
Netflix has now confirmed a May 27th release for The Do-Over, and has also released a brief teaser trailer for the movie. Rub your hands with glee,...

“ ‘[Paul Blart]: Mall Cop’ is a very funny film, and someone should make it, but that’s not what we’re doing. We want to work with visionary filmmakers who are making interesting films that you’re still going to be talking about in three years,” Amazon Studios chief Roy Price recently told Variety about the difference in approach between themselves and Netflix. Indeed, with their competitors serving a massive worldwide market, their original programming has to include fare that's broad enough to attract new subscribers, which means doing things like signing up Adam Sandler for a four-picture deal. We saw the first result of that collaboration with "The Ridiculous 6," which Netflix claimed was their most watched film on its service in its first thirty days of release. An Adam Sandler/David Spade collaboration doesn't at all excite me (I'm just not a fan of either), but there's obviously something about the project that's attractive enough to Paula Patton, since she's joined both actor/comics in the Steve Brill-directed Netflix comedy feature, "The Do Over" - the second film in the multipicture deal Sandler's Happy Madison production company inked with the premier streaming platform. Has it actually been ten years already since we have been engaged in the realm of films dating back to 2004? A decade is certainly a long period of time to build our appreciation for cinema up until this critical point in 2014. In looking back at 2004, one can recall fondly some of the more desirable releases to come out at that time. For instance, the superb Million Dollar Baby was the Academy Award-winning film for 2004. Even the comedies that were released that year gave movie audiences cause to rejoice with such ditties as the sleeper indie hit Napoleon Dynamite and well as mainstream laughers in Mean Girls and Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgandy.
Unfortunately for every gem there is a dud and then some. And 2004 had its share to say the least. So how about getting nostalgic and recalling some of the notable misses that were heaped on misled moviegoers...

The first trailer for Stephen Brill’s Walk of Shame was not super promising, but this red band trailer brings the goods. Or at least, it brings a glance at James Marsden in the sure-to-be-iconic yellow dress Elizabeth Banks wears for seemingly the entire movie, and that is good enough for me. (How many of those dresses do you think they went through?) Banks gets into some not so family friendly hijinks as she races around L.A. trying to recover her car and make it to work the day after a hookup with Marsden. Her best friends, Sarah Wright and Gillian Jacobs, team up with Marsden to track her down. Banks and Marsden are on my “I’ll watch them in just about anything” list, so I’ll be checking this one out when it hits theaters on May 2.

Now, imagine Meatballs set in the 1990s, minus the genuine humor and funny lead. Anyone who’s lived in a college town or a neighborhood with a bustling bar district over the past ten years or so has probably heard the term “walk of shame.” Or, at least, you have to have seen one take place, even if you didn’t know what the kids were calling it at the time. The walk of shame happens when somebody makes some bad decisions at a bar, spends the night at the house of someone they don’t know, and then has to walk back home the next morning looking all disheveled and gross because the person they spent the night with doesn’t even have the decency to give them a ride. Due to the fact that the walk of shame is both comically embarrassing and promotes casual sex, it was only a matter of time before somebody in Hollywood used it for the basis of a raunchy comedy, and...

There are some women among today's crop of talented female actors that seem fearless when it comes to comedy. Elizabeth Banks is one of them. Though she has tackled dramatic performances in the past (The Hunger Games, People Like Us), she shines when there's humor involved in the role (The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Zack and Miri Make a Porno). So It's always good news to hear she's starring in a comedy, particularly after her brief but memorable appearance in the recently released Pitch Perfect, which she also produced. According to Variety, Banks is set to star in Lakeshore Entertainment and Sidney Kimmel Entertainment's Walk of Shame, which is set to start shooting in Los Angeles early next year. Directed by Steven Brill, the comedy follows " an aspiring Los Angeles TV news anchor who loses an audition for her dream job, and goes out for an uncharacteristic night of partying that leads...

With Rupert Murdoch's British newspaper News Of The World printing its last edition today, Christiane Amanpour assembled a panel on This Week to discuss what implications the phone hacking scandal might have on the News Corp. media empire. CourtTV founder Steve Brill suggested that even if it turns out that knowledge of the criminal activity only existed at the editorial level, he still thinks it is likely that Murdoch's FCC licenses to operate television stations in this country will be challenged.

Steven Brill and ex-Wall Street Journal publisher L. Gordon Crovitz have sold Journalism Online -- the company they launched in 2009 to help newspapers monetize their online content -- to R.R. Donnelly, the 150-year-old Chicago-based printing company. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but R.R. Donnelly certainly has the cash to make it. The company had more than $10 billion in revenue in 2010. As part of the deal, WSJ owner News Corp. sold its minority stake in Journalism Online. News Corp. invested in the company last June. The move comes...

New York -- News Corp. unveiled two digital media deals on Monday.
The company said it has acquired Skiff LLC, Hearst Corporation's e-reading platform that allows delivery of premium journalism to tablets, smartphones, e-readers and netbooks. The conglomerate also unveiled an investment in Journalism Online LLC, a venture dedicated to enabling news providers to collect revenue from their online readership. Its founders include Steven Brill and Gordon Crovitz.
News Corp. didn't disclose the financial terms of the two transactions.
"Today's developments underscore News Corporation's ongoing commitment to create strong business models that support journalism at a time of great change in our industry," said chief digital officer Jon Miller. "Both Skiff and Journalism Online serve as key building blocks in our strategy to transform the publishing industry and ensure consumers will have continued access to the highest quality journalism."
Miller on Monday also named Jon Housman president of News Corp.

Here's an interesting new project that just officially went into development, but could potentially come together quickly. Warner Brothers, in association with Steve Carell's Carousel Pictures, is putting together a romantic comedy called Mail Order Groom, with both Carell and Tina Fey attached as the leads.
What's strange here is that the same duo -- who also happen to share the same NBC sitcom television block -- just wrapped filming on another romantic comedy, Date Night, which is set for release early next year. The success of that pic, I imagine, may dictate whether or not this film goes ahead.
Mail Order Groom is about a lonely American woman (Fey) who orders an Eastern European soldier as a mail order husband. The film is expected to be in the vein of Borat and in the tone of 30 Rock. It'd be easy to envision the movie, and both principals in those particular roles (though,...

For this feature on paid content (“What It Will Take for Paid Content to Work”) I spoke with Steven Brill, media entrepreneur and founder of Journalism Online, to get an update on the ambitious, somewhat mysterious project.
In an interview last week, Brill said that more than 1,200 publishers have signed on, and that the company is “probably 10 days to two weeks away” from sending a beta group of affiliates its “reader software” to test. If all goes well, he sa...

How do we get people to pay for their news on the web?
What was once a desperate mirage now shows the hard outlines of a plan.
Rupert Murdoch has threatened to dump Google and is flirting with Microsoft over selling his content to their upstart Bing search engine. Steven Brill’s much-hyped Journalism Online has a network of more than 1,200 publishers ready to collaborate on paid content. And Time Inc. is considering an iTunes-like application to charge for its magazines’ content, either via subscription or on a “per song” basis.<...

It's a good day for funny people, especially if your name is Tina Fey or Seth MacFarlane.
Fey's series, 30 Rock, was handed 22 Emmy nominations this morning, which stands as a record for a comedy series. She and Alec Baldwin were also nominated for acting awards. Plus, for the first time some of the other actors on NBC's laffer were recognized. Jane Krakowski, Jack McBrayer and Tracy Morgan all picked up supporting nominations.
MacFarlane's Family Guy was also nominated for best comedy series, the first time an animated show has cracked that category since The Flintstones in 1961. Two years ago MacFarlane decided to pull his show from contention in the animated series category to have it considered for best comedy.
Mad Men, the drama about the advertising world in the sixties, picked up 16 nominations in the drama categories, including a best actor nod for Jon Hamm. Hamm is also nominated as...
