What are you afraid of? It’s only rock ‘n roll. Decades before Michael Dougherty released Trick ‘r Treat there was Trick or Treat, a 1986 horror movie directed by Charles Martin Smith that introduced the world to undead rocker Sammi Curr. The cult classic has Never Before been available to stream, but Bloody Disgusting is changing that this Halloween.
Cineverse is giving horror fans a whole new reason to scream this spooky season, as they announce the acquisition of the 1986 horror classic Trick or Treat from Red Shirt Pictures/Synapse Films. The company will premiere Trick or Treat just in time for Halloween weekend exclusively on Screambox. The film begins streaming this Friday, October 27!
This will be the first time the new restoration from Synapse Films has Ever been seen, and it’s also the first time the movie has Ever made its way onto a streaming service.

It’s been a tough few years for Don May, Jr. and Jerry Chandler of Synapse Films, as they have worked tirelessly on the much-needed 4K restoration of Dario Argento’s Suspiria. The proverbial light is officially at the end of that tumultuous tunnel, though, as the Suspiria Blu-ray is set to be released on December 19th, and the film enjoyed a wonderful resurgence over the last few months, thanks to various theatrical and festival screenings of their efforts (which you can read my thoughts on Here).
Daily Dead recently caught up with Don May, Jr. about the long road that he and his partner have traversed together over the last three years while working on the Suspiria 4K transfer, and he chatted about all the hiccups along the way, working with the film’s cinematographer Luciano Tovoli, getting feedback from the Maestro himself, and more.

Digital screenings have become more and more popular. It has come to the point where 35mm screenings have become supremely rare if you don’t live in a major metropolitan area or don’t live on either coast of the United States. I can speak to this as a fan and as a programmer of our midngiht program, Late Nite Grindhouse. You’d be surprised at how many classics of our genre have been given the bare minimum in scanning for digital archiving. Most of the time, the mindset was that once a film was scanned from a 35mm negative or interpositive, that was the best it would get and after the digital scan, the original elements would be handled with less care than they were before the scan. Lately, you’ve probably seen or have heard of recent 4K restorations of classics like Phantasm, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre,...

Attention fans of weird and cult cinema here in Canada. Video Services Corp (Vsc) has inked a three year deal with Synapse Films to distribute their films on all platforms. Distro starts this February with Synapse's release of the Canadian zombie indie flick Reel Zombies. Vsc will also go through Synapse's back catalog as well. Until now Synapse releases were available in in some stores, but at import prices, which sucked large. Synapse Films is happy to be partnering with Vsc, to finally be able to bring our titles to Canadians in a timely and inexpensive manner," declared Jerry Chandler, CEO of Synapse Films. ...

“Buy a Bag, Go Home in a Box.” You have no idea how thrilled I am to report that one of my absolute favorite horror movies of the Nineties, Popcorn, will get a fully-loaded special edition Blu-ray sometime around Halloween this year courtesy of Synapse Films.
For the uninitiated, Popcorn is a love letter to the golden age of b-movies in the guise of a fun slasher flick about film students putting on an all-night bad movie horror film festival; a master-of-disguise maniac begins killing them off during the show via twisted takes on old school movie theater gimmicks.
The true highlights are the fake movies-within-the-movie lovingly paying homage to the b-movies of the Fifties and Sixties: The Amazing Electrified Man, The Stench, and Mosquito!
As much as I’ve had a major soft spot for Popcorn since seeing it in theaters opening weekend, I clearly don’t love it...

Synapse Films has acquired the North American home-video rights to Dario Argento's 1977 classic horror film Suspiria, with an original soundtrack by European prog-rockers Goblin.
“I’ve been involved in the restoration and release of many films in my career, but Suspiria has always eluded me, until now,” says Donald May, Jr., President of Synapse Films. “It’s one of my favorite horror films and I’m ecstatic that my business partner, Jerry Chandler, was able to negotiate with the rights holders to release this film. This is going to be an amazing projectfor us.”
Synapse Films will work closely with Technicolor Rome and Technicolor Los Angeles to create an all-new high-definition 2K scan from the original negative for a possible 2014-15 video release.

One of the films that I knew would be amazing on Blu-Ray is Dario Argento’s Suspiria. I actually imported a Region-Free Blu-Ray from Japan just to see it on my HDTV. It costed me a pretty penny but if you are willing to wait, those hooligans over at Synapse Films will be releasing Argento’s classic on Blu-Ray via a new 2K scan supervised by Technicolor!! Synapse Films president Don May Jr. wrote a detailed update on the site's blog explaining that their long-awaited Blu-ray “Meltdown Edition” release of James Muro's 1987 cult classic Street Trash, originally slated for June 11th, has been delayed slightly due to technical issues in the restoration and HD remastering process. Street Trash was transferred in high-definition from the original camera negative, which had many physical flaws to be addressed – flaws which were not visible in the earlier standard definition DVD release – and May says those issues were not addressed to his satisfaction by the authoring facility involved. “For me personally, this project is currently in a state that I refuse to release,” he writes. “I have discussed it with my business partner, Jerry Chandler, and we both agree that the delay, to fix the issues at hand, is more important than to release a botched product to our fans, and to the marketplace,...

Genre DVD specialist Synapse Films has announced that it has begun the restoration of one of the most twisted midnight movies in cinema history, Curt McDowell’s 1975 Thundercrack!, for disc release to mark the film’s 35th anniversary next year. Set in an old dark house on a stormy night, the stylized black-and-white feature details the strange and explicitly sexual interactions between a number of over-the-top characters (including one played by underground film legend George Kuchar, who also scripted)…and a gorilla.
“Thundercrack! is a great film, and we are working with the director’s sister, and Thundercrack! actress, Melinda McDowell, to make sure the film is presented correctly, in exactly the way Curt would’ve wanted it released,” says Synapse’s Don May Jr. “We’ll be releasing the film in its restored, longer form, using the one and only original 16mm film print. Fango just heard from Jerry Chandler of Synapse Films, who gave us the scoop on a pair of new acquisitions that reflect his and Synapse partner Don May Jr.’s renewed commitment to independent genre features. “We stayed away from new indie films for a number of years, because they weren’t selling,” Chandler tells us, “but [their 2009 releases] Header and Sick Girl were too good for us to not put them out—when a title is as compelling as those two are, we have to handle them.
“That’s why Don and I got into this business, not just to throw stuff out there that isn’t as good, but might be an easier sell,” he continues. “Don and I debated about coming up with a name for a line of these titles, and for the life of us, we could not come up with anything that sounded right.
