QuarXX’s “This Thing Inside of Me,” Caye Casas’ “Malamuerte” and maybe the biggest buzz title in the whole selection, Sean Wainsteim’s “Idaho Winter,” a multi-media mashup, feature in a robust, variegated lineup at Sitges FanPitch, which is quickly establishing itself as a key early fall global genre project platform drawing on titles from not only Spain but Europe, Latin and North America and Asia.
Unspooling Oct. 6-7, the FanPitch ranks as one industry centrepiece at the Sitges, International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia, a hallowed genre fest Mecca and one of the most important in Europe.
Projects range widely from multiple psychological thrillers, often driving deep into protagonists’ deep trauma, to black horror-comedy, stylish scarefests, near-future allegories, the allegedly true-event paranormal, and vampire actioners.
One title, “Idaho Winter,” is billed as “YA meta-fiction.” Another, fantastical series “The Lost Gods of Memphis,” surely the biggest budgeted of all projects at this year’s FanPitch,...

Rachel Anderson and Mary Duong in ‘Bananas’ (Photo: Mia Forrest).
Before SXSW was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, Mary Duong and Rachel Anderson’s short-form docuseries Bananas was due to screen in the festival’s Episodic Pilot Competition.
After a heartwarming response to the series on Sbs On Demand, the Queensland filmmakers had been excited to increase their global reach. The cancellation was gutting – no less so because Duong was already in the Us. It threw plans for the foreseeable future into the air.
However, for at least the next month, Bananas will stream for free globally on Vimeo as part of a special showcase of works from the SXSW Episodic Competition. Also included are comedies Bored, Cooper’s Bar, The Dream and This Isn’t Me, and documentary Homecoming: The Journey of Cardboard. On April 23, there will be a virtual Q&a with all the creators.

At the beginning of March, the 2020 SXSW Film Festival was canceled, one of countless events and productions waylaid by the global health crisis that continues today. But the show must go on — especially for independent productions still hoping their work can make an impact.
Starting today, Vimeo will host six of the festival’s episodic TV pilots via the SXSW 2020 Pilot Showcase, a streaming release allowing anyone to preview these diverse projects for free via the Vimeo streaming service. SXSW has allowed the episodes to stream on different platforms with no fees or sign-in requirements, and you can watch all six episodes now.

"You look like my type!" Social media can be a dangerous addiction! Mj is a horror thriller short film made by London-based filmmaker Jamie Delaney, creating shorts for years now. Coral Amiga stars as Mary Jane, aka "Mj", a woman obsessed with social media but overwhelmed by her inadequacy. As she becomes increasingly alienated, she develops an addiction to the satisfaction of killing because it's bringing her the attention she craves. "Mj puts a spin on the traditional slasher film while forcing us to consider the lengths that people will go to be seen." We're seeing more and more films like this, including Spree at Sundance this year, about how people will do anything for likes. There's some freaky, visceral moments in this - watch out. Thanks to Short of the Week for debuting this. Description from YouTube: "In an attempt to find acceptance and purpose in an alienating post-millennial world,...
