UK sales outfit Bankside Films has unveiled a first look image of Mala Emde in the role of Vera Brandes in Ido Fluk’s The Girl From Köln, as well as a slew of key deals on the film as the company heads into the European Film Market (EFM).
The feature, currently in post-production, tells the little-known story of one of the best-selling jazz records of all time, US pianist Keith Jarrett’s 1975 Köln Concert, and how one formidable German teenager, Vera Brandes, was instrumental in its creation. Bankside will be showing a sales promo to buyers at the EFM.

Jonathan Majors’ Magazine Dreams is officially back on the market. Nearly a year after Searchlight Pictures acquired the body-building drama, the specialty arm of Walt Disney Studios has quietly returned rights of the movie to the filmmakers, who will now shop it to other buyers.
The move comes mere weeks after Majors was convicted of assault and harassment, stemming from an incident involving his ex-partner, Grace Jabbari. Searchlight delivered the news to the Magazine Dreams team late last week that it would not be releasing the film, according to sources.
Searchlight had no comment.
Magazine Dreams debuted to fanfare last January at Sundance, where Majors’ performance as amateur body builder Killian Maddox earned him rave reviews and early awards buzz. The film’s director, Elijah Bynum, was hailed as the next big director.
Searchlight bought the film for what sources say was around $2 million in February 2023. It was mapping out a late-year awards season campaign.

One week after Jonathan Majors was convicted of assault and harassment, his film “Magazine Dreams” has been released back to the filmmakers by Searchlight, which will no longer be distributing, Variety has confirmed.
The Walt Disney Studios specialty arm acquired the body building drama a few weeks after it premiered at last year’s Sundance Film Festival. The filmmakers will now be free to shop the film to other distributors.
“Magazine Dreams,” directed by Elijah Bynum, debuted to positive reviews at the festival and sold for a reported mid-seven figures. Majors was hailed for his performance as amateur body builder Killian Maddox.
But Majors’ March 25 arrest put the film’s release in question, and it was officially removed from Searchlight’s calendar in October.
The Majors conviction came after an incident involving his ex-partner Grace Jabbari. His sentence hearing is scheduled for Feb. 6.

Searchlight Pictures has dropped “Magazine Dreams” starring Jonathan Majors and returned the film’s rights to the filmmakers, who intend to again shop it on the open market, IndieWire has confirmed.
Searchlight acquired the movie out of last year’s Sundance Film Festival and slated it for release during awards season, but pulled it from its release calendar after Majors was arrested on March 25 for assault and harassment roughly a month after “Magazine Dreams” was acquired.
Majors last month was found guilty of assault, leading Disney to fire him from his duties as Kang in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. At the time, THR reported it was unlikely “Magazine Dreams” would ever be released by Searchlight, even directly to streaming on Hulu. But rather than sit on a shelf, the film has a chance to see the light of day elsewhere should the filmmakers find an interested buyer.

A petition by the Producers Union asking the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers to drop “producers” from their official name was delivered to AMPTP president Carol Lombardini on Tuesday.
As of noon, 2,353 producers, including Blumhouse founder Jason Blum, Women in Film president Cathy Schulman and “Fast and the Furious” producer Neil Moritz have signed the Change.org petition.
“The AMPTP primarily represents major studios, networks and streaming platforms, and the inclusion of ‘Producers’ in their name inaccurately implies that all producers are part of this organization. We’ve reached Labor Day and the close of this endless summer labor dispute that has stretched 18 weeks with no end in sight — many who had pegged Labor Day as the likely resolution now point to Thanksgiving. Deadline Strike Talk host Billy Ray engages Jennifer Fox, producer of such films as Michael Clayton, Nightcrawler, The Last Duel, and the Sundance sensation Magazine Dreams. They dig into the current labor stalemate and how AMPTP might find common ground with WGA and SAG-AFTRA. And they also engage the plight of the producers who assemble projects from inception, don’t get paid until production stars, and are the first to be asked to take a haircut on their fees. Producers don’t need an alliance. What they need is a union, Ray and Fox argue.

I have been tracking producer Sol Bondy since 2016 when co-production The Happiest Day in the Life of Ölli Mäki won the Un Certain Regard Grand Prize and the European Film Award for Best Debut. He and Fred Burle have been developing The Girl from Köln (aka Köln 75) with writer-director Ido Fluk, the filmmaker behind 2016 Tribeca selection The Ticket since 2019. "This project has been very close to our hearts in the last few years and we're very excited with the way it's been shaped so far," said Bondy, a Variety Producer to Watch in 2018. "It's been such a joy working with Ido on this exciting story and we're thrilled to have put an amazing team together," added Burle, Brazilian born producer who was just made a partner in One Two Films, alongside co-founders Sol Bondy and Christoph Lange. Burle joined One Two in January 2017, having graduated from the German Film and Television Academy (dffb) the previous year. He has previously worked as a film critic, at The Match Factory, and as curator of the inaugural dffb film festival. One Two Films has produced and co-produced award-winning films such as Holy Spider (Read my blog about it here), Vadim Perelman's Persian Lessons (Read my blog about it here), Jennifer Fox's Sundance breakout The Tale, Isabel Coixet's The Bookshop and Juho Kuosmanen's The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki.Other titles in the pipeline include Hafsteinn Gunnar Sigurdsson's dark comedy Northern Comfort, which premieres in SXSW later this month, Annemarie Jacir's survival drama The Oblivion Theory, Sarah Arnold's debut feature Wild Encounters and Michiel ten Horn's romantic comedy Any Other Night. In Berlin this year it was announced that Bankside would be The Girl from Köln's international sales agent and was launching sales. Alamode Film already has German-speaking territories and is a coproducer, who have very recently secured funding through the Fff, the local fund in Bavaria. It is in early pre-production and will shoot this year in Poland and Germany. The Girl from Köln tells the little-known story of Vera Brandes, who, in 1975, at the age of 17, staged the famous Köln Concert by jazz musician Keith Jarrett, which became the top-selling jazz solo album of all time. With Polish Film Institute backing, Oscar-winning Polish producer Ewa Puszczynska (Ida, Cold War) of Extreme Emotions is co-producing along with Annegret Weitkämper-Krug of Germany's Gretchenfilm (Seneca). Oscar nominee and Emmy winner Oren Moverman (Love & Mercy, Bad Education) serves as executive producer. Moverman also produced Fluk's previous feature, The Ticket. The Tale writer-director Jennifer Fox also serves as executive producer. Stephen Kelliher and Sophie Green executive produce for Bankside. It stars Mala Emde (Skin Deep, And Tomorrow the Entire World) in the lead role, alongside John Magaro (Past Lives) as Jarrett. Magaro was also in Cannes last year with Kelly Reichardt's competition title Showing Up.Other cast attached include Alexander Scheer (Rabiye Kurnaz vs. George W. Bush), Ulrich Tukur (The Life of Others), Susanne Wolff (Sisi & I, Styx), Jördis Triebel (Dark), Jan Bülow (Lindenberg) and Marie-Lou Sellem (Tar, Exit Marrakesh). The NYU-graduate Fluk was dubbed "a talent to watch" by Variety following his feature debut Never Too Late, the first crowd-sourced Israeli film ever made. His American debut, the Tribeca competition selection, The Ticket, starred Dan Stevens and Malin Akerman. Upcoming projects include 24 Hours in June, a retelling of the final day in the life of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg who were convicted of spying on behalf of the Soviet Union, to be produced by Academy Award winner James Schamus (Brokeback Mountain) and Joe Pirro (Driveways). Fluk is repped by Amotz Zakai, Amy Schiffman, and Kegan Schell at Echo Lake Entertainment. He is also created the recently-announced HBO series Empty Mansions for Fremantle with director Joe Wright (Atonement, Darkest Hour) attached to direct the pilot. "From the moment I heard Vera's story, about how as a high school teenager she organized one of the greatest concerts in history, I knew her story had to be told," said Fluk. "We were immediately exhilarated by Vera Brandes' remarkable female empowerment story. Her strength, courage and sheer belief in herself and the music of Keith Jarrett will entertain and inspire audiences around the world," added Kelliher.

One of the most talked-about Sundance movies from this year’s festival finally has a home, as Searchlight Pictures has acquired “Magazine Dreams,” Elijah Bynum’s sophomore feature starring Jonathan Majors. The movie won the Sundance Jury Award for Creative Vision.
Haley Bennett, Taylour Paige, Mike O’Hearn, Harrison Page and Harriet Sansom Harris also star in the intense drama. “Magazine Dreams” is described, in the official synopsis, as following “aspiring bodybuilder Killian Maddox (Majors), who struggles to find human connection in this exploration of celebrity and violence. Nothing deters him from his fiercely protected dream of superstardom, not even the doctors who warn him of the permanent damage he causes to himself with his quest.”
Our review of the film out of Sundance was mixed positive, with praise being heaped on Majors’ performance. “Anchored in his greatness, ‘Magazine Dreams’ can get away with most of its flaws,” the review read.

The Sundance Film Festival-hosted world premiere Elijah Bynum’s Magazine Dreams may have gotten off to a bumpy start as traffic delays and festival congestion in Park City caused the film to start 45 minutes late. But after the credits rolled and the lights came up, its star Jonathan Majors faced the Eccles Theatre audience and received an electric standing ovation.
In what many are calling a brutal and fully committed performance, Majors stars as Killian Maddox, an amateur bodybuilder who sacrifices health, both mental and physical, to pursue a dream of superstardom while he struggles to maintain control of a volatile temper.
The official fest synopsis calls the film “a provocative film that respects the dignity of its protagonist as it pulls no punches in portraying the most physically and emotionally painful moments of his darkening odyssey.” Those who caught the screening were quick to describe it as Taxi Driver.

Exclusive: For his first interview on the edgy drama Magazine Dreams that makes its Sundance Premiere tonight at Eccles, Jonathan Majors was pulling into Park City after driving for days cross country from New York. While Majors is one of Hollywood’s fastest-rising stars after turns in The Last Black Man in San Francisco, Lovecraft Country, The Harder They Fall and Da 5 Bloods, he was not going to drive up a small film’s limited budget with pricey airfare. Magazine Dreams is written and directed by Elijah Bynum, and produced by Jennifer Fox, Dan Gilroy, Jeffrey Soros and Simon Horsman. Fox & Gilroy made Nightcrawler.

After pandemic cancellations and date changes over the past couple of years, the 13th edition will return to is usual November berth on Saturday, November 19, a key kickoff to Oscar season.
This year’s previously announced honorary awards will be presented to directors Euzhan Palcy and Peter Weir, songwriter Diane Warren, while Michael J. Fox will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.

Over the course of a celebrated 40-year career, veteran Danish editor Niels Pagh Andersen has worked on critically acclaimed films including Pirjo Honkasalo’s “The 3 Rooms of Melancholia” and Joshua Oppenheimer’s Oscar-nominated “The Act of Killing” and “The Look of Silence.”
One of the key takeaways from those collaborations, which he explores in his new book “Order in Chaos: Storytelling and Editing in Documentary Film,” is the importance of the creative synergy that forms between an editor and a filmmaker.
“The artistic vision is the director’s responsibility. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced a new March 25 date for the 12th Governors Awards, two days before the Oscar telecast in Los Angeles.
The event, which had been slated to occur on January 15 until the Omicron surge scuttled plans for a live event, will present Honorary Oscars to Samuel L. Jackson, Elaine May and Liv Ullmann, and the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award to Danny Glover.
The Academy also announced that the rescheduled event, produced by Jennifer Fox, will be scaled down in size from what had initially been planned.

The 12th annual Governors Awards is on the move.
After being postponed due to continuing concerns about the pandemic, the newly rescheduled date for the Governors Awards is March 25, the Friday before the Oscar ceremony on March 27. The event had been set for January 15 at the new Fairmont Century Plaza but now is back at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland, the same location where the Governors Ball is held directly after the Oscars.
This no doubt will be in part because the whole machinery and staff involved in producing the Oscar telecast also can do the Governors Awards more easily.
Honorary Awards — and the accompanying Oscar statuette — will be presented to Samuel L. Jackson, Elaine May and Liv Ullman, and the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award will be presented to Danny Glover. The rescheduled event, produced by Jennifer Fox, will be scaled down in size.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has announced a new date for their annual Governors Awards to honor Danny Glover, Samuel L. Jackson, Elaine May and Liv Ullmann. The event will now be held on Friday, March 25, two days before the 94th annual Oscars ceremony.
Initially slated for Jan. 15, before postponing due to the rise in Covid-19 cases, the 12th annual ceremony will be scaled down in size and produced by Emmy nominee Jennifer Fox (“The Tale”).
The Honorary Award, an Oscar statuette, is given “to honor extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences, or for outstanding service to the Academy.” This year that will go to Jackson, May and Ullmann.
Meanwhile, Glover will receive The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, also an Oscar statuette, given “to an individual in the motion picture arts and sciences whose humanitarian efforts have brought credit to the industry.

The terrain of child grooming has come increasingly to the fore in recent years, both in documentaries like Caught In The Net and fiction features including Jennifer Fox's The Tale - which saw a woman reconsidering what had happened to her as a youngster from an adult's perspective.
Now Jamie Dack, co-writing with Audrey Finlay, expands on her earlier short film of the same name to immerse us uncomfortably into the world of 17-year-old Lea (newcomer Lily McInerny making an impressive debut) as burgeoning teenage emotions and boredom make her vulnerable to predatory tactics. Vital to the film's success is the fact that Lea isn't stupid or even lonely in the conventional sense. When she first meets Tom (Jonathan Tucker) after he steps in to help her out of an awkward situation, she's well aware of how much older he is - double her age, at 34 - and reluctant to.

Ben Affleck hopes that his latest movie, “The Last Duel,” will generate “a lot of catharsis and empathy” among audiences of the Ridley Scott-directed historical epic, which premieres Friday at the Venice Film Festival.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday afternoon, Affleck said the story is “one that I hoped would develop in the viewer a sense of compassion, and the idea that we might look at one another in a different way, and with more empathy, and with the sense of wondering whether or not our personal perspective might not take into consideration completely the other person’s reality, history, culture and education.”
Based on actual events, “The Last Duel” is a tale of betrayal and vengeance set against the brutality of 14th century France. The story centers on an accusation by Marguerite de Carrouges (Jodie Comer), the wife of Jean de Carrouges (Matt Damon), that Jacques...

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck arrived in Venice on Thursday, ahead of Friday’s world premiere of Ridley Scott’s historical epic “The Last Duel.”
The couple landed at Venice airport before traveling to the city in a vaporetto taxi — a speedboat with the name “Confusion.” Their arrival puts to rest weeks of speculation around whether or not the couple would attend the film festival together and make their first major red carpet debut since reuniting.
Lopez and Affleck, who are together known as “Bennifer,” had been set to get married in 2003, but postponed their wedding before calling off their relationship. They started dating again a few months ago, after she separated from Alex Rodriguez in April, according to press reports.
Affleck stars in “The Last Duel” alongside Matt Damon, Adam Driver and Jodie Comer. The screenplay is by Nicole Holofcener, Affleck and Damon, based on the book by Eric Jager.
