Blur’s comeback album, The Ballad of Darren, arrived this past summer, giving fans their first new release from the Britpop legends since they went on hiatus eight years prior. Now, frontman Damon Albarn has said that he’s done (for now) revisiting Blur, and is ready to get back to focusing on his other project, Gorillaz.
“It is time to wrap up this campaign,” Albarn told the French publication Les Inrockuptibles (via Far Out Magazine). “It’s too much for me. It was the right thing to do and an immense honor to play these songs again, spend time with these guys, make an album, blah-blah-blah… I’m not saying I won’t do it again, it was a beautiful success, but I’m not dwelling on the past.”

The perpetually busy Damon Albarn has revealed he is working on another opera. As part of our latest cover story, the Blur and Gorillaz frontman tells Consequence he is putting German playwright Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s The Magic Flute Part Two to music for the first time.
“I got offered this amazing opportunity to set Goethe’s Magic Flute Part Two to music and song,” says Albarn, who previously created an opera based on Elizabethan scientist John Dee in 2011. “I’m kind of teaching myself Goethe, which is not as great a task as it would have been if I hadn’t done a lot of study about, you know, other Renaissance men like Dr. John Dee. I’ve got a lot of the bases because I had to go a long way back to even vaguely understand what that was about. So, I did a lot of that 10 years ago.

slowthai has pleaded not guilty to two counts of raping a woman in September 2021, reports BBC News.
The rapper, born Tyron Frampton, entered the plea on Thursday, June 15th at a Crown Court in Oxford, where the alleged incident took place. In May, slowthai was charged with oral and vaginal penetration of a woman without her consent.
His co-defendant, Alex Blake-Walker, pleaded not guilty to one charge of sexually assaulting the same woman, as well as charges of raping and sexually assaulting a second complainant. Both defendants have been released on conditional bail until their trial in July 2024.
After the charges were made public, slowthai’s name was removed from the posters for several major UK festivals — including Glastonbury, Reading & Leeds, and Parklife — and many of his remaining shows have either been canceled or postponed.

Bad Bunny has been laying low after his historic Coachella performance last month, but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t been working on new music. On Thursday, the Puerto Rican star released “Where She Goes,” an unexpected track that packs a few surprises.
First of all, the track title is in English — something that immediately got fans wondering if the entire song would be in English, too. It’s not; the lyrics feature Bad Bunny’s signature rhymes as he raps about a girl he met once and wonders...

In what’s destined to be the next viral TikTok audio, Thundercat and Tame Impala have teamed up for a collaborative new song called “No More Lies.” Check it out below.
Marking Thundercat’s first release since 2020’s It Is What It Is, “No More Lies” pairs Stephen Bruner’s classic slip-n-slide bass with Kevin Parker’s lush instrumentation as the two sing about the end of a relationship. “It’s not your fault, I’m just kind of ass,” Thundercat croons, before Tame Impala adds, “I’ll just be on my own.”
“I’ve wanted to work with Kevin since the very first Tame Impala album,” Thundercat said in a statement. “I feel that I knew that us working together would be special. I’ve been excited about this song for a long time and hope to create more with Kevin in the future.”

Coachella’s second weekend has been chock full of surprise guest appearances, and Wet Leg’s Friday set was no exception as the Isle of White duo got a boisterous, surprise assist from Dave Grohl.
The band was performing “Ur Mum” — during Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers’ live performances, the song always prompts cathartic, audience-assisted screams — when Grohl snuck onstage.
“Ok Coachella Weekend Two, we’ve all been practicing our longest and loudest scream,” Teasdale said as she encouraged the crowd to get ready to let it all out. “Are you all ready?...

“I’m sorry, but weekend two is better than weekend one,” said Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn prior to closing out the band’s Friday night set at Coachella. He wasn’t kidding, as over the course of the hour-plus performance Gorillaz were joined by a star-studded ensemble that included the likes of Bad Bunny, Beck, De La Soul, Yassiin Bey (a.k.a. Mos Def), Del the Funky Homosapien, Little Simz, Thundercat, and more.
Bad Bunny joined Gorillaz for the first live performance of “Tormenta” from the band’s latest album, Cracker Island. Following their late-night performance on Kimmel, Beck teamed up with Gorillaz on “The Valley of the Pagans.” Other collaborators included Yasiin Bey (“Sweepstakes”), Little Simz (“Garage Palace”), Del the Funky Homosapien, and De La Soul (“Feel Good Inc.”).

Gorillaz and Beck shared the stage on Wednesday’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! to perform their Cracker Island collaborative track, “Possession Island.” Watch it below.
“Possession Island” is the closing song on Gorillaz’s eighth LP, which arrived in February. The joint track marks the second time the pair have collaborated following “The Valley of the Pagans” from Gorillaz’s 2020 album, Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez. In September 2022, band and Beck performed both songs live during the former’s star-studded Los Angeles tour stop.

Blondie rang in Coachella 2023 with a set of greatest hits, and to up the ante, they brought out legendary guitarist Nile Rodgers to round out a couple songs.
Rather than saving the best for last, the new wave legends came in swinging by opening with “One Way or Another” and going straight into “Hanging on the Telephone,” “Call Me,” “Maria,” and “The Tide Is High.” Rodgers then hit the stage for “Rapture,” Blondie’s 1980 song infamous for Debbie Harry’s “rap” bridge.
After that, Rodgers stayed on to perform “Backfired,” Harry’s debut solo song. The 1981 track appears on the singer’s first solo album, KooKoo, which Rodgers and his Chic bandmate, bassist Bernard Edwards, produced. From there, Blondie threw in “Long Time,” a cut from 2017’s Pollinator, before closing their set with “Heart of Glass” and “Dreaming.” Check out videos from their Coachella show below.

De La Soul have been close collaborators with Gorillaz dating back to their appearance on the 2005 hit “Feel Good Inc.,” but it turns out they were originally supposed to guest on a completely different song. During a recent episode of Kyle Meredith With…, De La Soul co-founder Maseo revealed that Damon Albarn initially suggested they appear on a different Demon Days single: “Kids with Guns.”
“When we went to do ‘Feel Good Inc.’, the initial song was ‘Kids with Guns,'” Maseo recalls. “When we were having a conversation about ‘Kids with Guns,’ I honestly came out and said, ‘Hey man, I think we forcing it.’ I said, ‘I don’t think this is the record. I think we’re not really collaborating, we’re just featuring on the record. It’s like Gorillaz featuring De La. We really need to do like a collaboration, where we both artistically show our flavor.

The Japanese indie pop band Chai have dropped an empowering new single, “We the Female!” Released alongside a music video that pays homage to the colorful and charming world of ‘80s television, the song is an encapsulation of the quartet’s infectious up-beat energy. Watch the music video below.
“We are human and were born as female, but we have both female and male aspects in each of our souls, each with our own sense of balance,” bassist and lyricist Yuuki said in a statement. “We can’t just label ourselves into clear-cut, simple categories anymore! I’m not anyone else but just ‘me,’ and you are no one else but just ‘you.’ This song celebrates that with a roar! Yooooooooo!!”
Yuuki’s right — the “roar” of “We the Female!” is a palpable celebration of an era that is moving beyond repressive gender norms. Between the track’s bouncing rhythm,...

The “Bad Bunny is dating Kendall Jenner” rumors are taking over Kardashian Twitter — and a new verse from Benito is only making fans think the relationship is even more real. On Friday, urbano star Eladio Carrión released his album 3MEN2 Kbrn, including “Coco Chanel,” featuring a verse from Bad Bunny that fans think references the model.
Tucked within lyrics about luxury vehicles and eating pasta in Italy, Bad Bunny sneaks in a mention of how “Scorpios are dangerous.” Jenner is a Scorpio. But if that line was too broad, a few bars later,...

Gorillaz, Cracker Island review: Damon Albarn’s band of apes return with their best album since 2005
“I’m on one per cent, but I’m there with you,” croons 2D on Gorillaz’ most enjoyable album since 2005’s Demon Days. It’s a sentiment that reflects the record’s commitment to finding collective fun in the face of isolating fatigue. Gorillaz have always been an apocalypse party of an act, but now, they’re laughing again. There’s a loose-limbed elation to the indie-funk grooves they find, with guests ranging from Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks to Australian psych-rockers Tame Impala and LA bass-bouncer Thundercat. And a sleepy solidarity in the more melancholy moments, which include a tender acoustic duet with Beck.

Gorillaz is a band that pretty much everyone has heard of, but only their biggest fans know of their complicated and often very goofy lore. What started off as a collaboration between Blur frontman Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett has become arguably the most successful virtual band of all time, with Stuart "2D" Pot, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle, and Russel Hobbs amassing a loyal legion of fans. Thanks to the band's cartoony appearances, an animated film about them would work extremely well, and they got pretty close to having one thanks to Netflix.
Unfortunately, Netflix has slashed its animated output over the past year, and according to Albarn, the Gorillaz film was one of their sacrifices. In an interview with the Dutch website Humo, the singer refused to name names, but said that their first foray into the medium of film was canceled due to Netflix's animation budget cuts.

There are two dials at Gorillaz HQ which determine 1) how many guests will be on an album, and 2) how elaborate its broader cartoon lore will be. 2018’s The Now Now, positioned as a solo album by Damon Albarn’s “2-D” alter ego, had minimal guests and only the slightest bit of extra-textual hijinks. On the other hand, 2020’s wildly overstuffed Song Machine project, in which every track was accompanied by at least one guest and a new cartoon detailing the band’s ongoing dystopian adventures, turned both dials to 11. Every track was a single,...

Following up on his guest mix for Diplo and Friends back in May, future bass producer Slushii has dropped an epic two hour mix for Owsla radio this week. The chilled out producer has been making some major waves in the dance community recently, and his appearance on Owsla radio marks a major milestone for his career.
Following an introduction from Skrillex himself, Slushii fills his mix with plenty of trap, dubstep and future bass, making sure to include a handful of unreleased IDs. A lot of big names appear on the tracklist, with tunes from Skrillex, Alison Wonderland, Ookay and more making the cut.
The two hour slot is a major chunk of time to fill, but Slushii manages to expertly curate his mix for Owsla with tons of great music, and the presence of unreleased material is always appreciated. Trust us, this is one mix you won’t want to miss out on.

Plus! The mega list of lists – Aka all the other stuff we didn't have room for
2010's best guest appearances
Bon Iver on Kanye's Lost In The World
It might be quicker to compile a list of people who didn't feature on Kanye's epic My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (Mike Oldfield, Rick Ross, Gil Scott-Heron, Aphex Twin etc) but Justin Vernon's cameo is a bit special.
Gillian Anderson as Wallis Simpson in Any Human Heart
Logan Mountstuart (Matthew Macfayden) crossed paths with Gillian Anderson's Wallis Simpson (brilliantly partnered by Tom Hollander as the paranoid Duke Of Windsor). An exile on a royal streak, she floated from Portugal to the Bahamas like a swan carved in ice, until Logan was crossed off their party list with a hissed "Judas!" straight to camera.
Prince Jamming at Gayngs' Last Prom On Earth

The BBC reports that a film about The Clash is a go and that it is to center around the making of their 1979 record, "London Calling." Now that I have a job that I have to drive to, I've noticed certain things about commuting which cause me irrational levels of annoyance. I'm not talking about bad driving; watching someone merge across three lanes of traffic without signaling at 70mph only to slam on the brakes when they get in front of you because the person in front of Them is only going 40mph is going to piss off anyone. (Side note: you ever notice how no one ever thinks they're a bad driver? Everyone always thinks they're an awesome driver and it's all those other idiots who are the problem. No one ever says "Yeah, I don't signal. I'm just an asshole like that.") I mean the stuff that has absolutely no bearing on your life but you can't help but notice and form an opinion on. In my case, it's people using their Maseratis and Lamborghinis to commute.

To help celebrate Entertainment Weekly’s 20th anniversary (one more year and we can finally drink booze!), the writers and editors have carefully curated a list of the 100 greatest characters in pop-culture over the last 20 years. Whether the fictional women, men, ogres, muppets, babies, and cartoon rockers who made our list were initially created before 1990 didn’t matter so long as they made a lasting impact in the culture after 1990. Some characters were so inseparable in our minds and hearts — like a certain highly articulate TV mother and daughter, for example — that we simply listed them together. (Hey, it’s our list,...

For many late night fans, the countdown is on until the debut of Conan O'Brien's new show, which is set to appear on cable station TBS at 11 p.m. some time this fall. When the still-untitled show debuts, you'll really see some fireworks and one-upsmanship not only between O'Brien and former rival Jay Leno but also between O'Brien and David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert as they all struggle for late night dominance. But before those fireworks start blazing, we still have plenty of comedy, music and interviews to enjoy during the time when we should be climbing into bed, and this week offers up a bevy of excellent diversions from slumber.
Letterman has a particularly explosive week ahead of him, as he'll talk to recent "American Idol" reject Tim Urban on Monday (April 26) and will welcome the always-unpredictable Courtney Love for an interview and performance...

The 2010 festival season is officially underway, as the annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival (which will be held in the usual place in Indio, California on April 16, 17 and 18) now has an official lineup. Jay-z, Muse, Pavement, Gorillaz, Faith No More and Vampire Weekend lead the way at the top of the pile, but there are also plenty of up-and-comers who will be worth spending time with in the desert heat (you should already schedule time to see Beach House play their new songs on Saturday).
Since no lineup is perfect, let's take a look at the five bands we're most looking forward to, along with the five bands that make us go "Huh?"

Them Crooked Vultures: They're perhaps the best live band working right now, and Josh Homme songs always sound better when you're a little bit dehydrated.
