London, July 15 (Ians) Arsenal and Ajax have reached an agreement on the transfer of 22-year-old Dutch international defender Jurrien Timber to London, both clubs announced.
The two sides reached an agreement on a 40 million euros transfer fee (45 million U.S. dollars), which can increase to 45 million euros through variables, reports Xinhua.
Timber has agreed a five-year deal to become Arsenal’s second signing of the close-season after the capture of forward Kai Havertz from Chelsea for around 82 million US dollars.
Timber joined the Ajax youth academy in 2014 and made his debut in the first team in March 2020. In total, he played 121 official matches for the first team of Ajax, in which he scored six goals. He won the Dutch championship twice and the Dutch Cup once (2021). He has also been capped 15 times for the Dutch national team, with four of those coming in the 2022 Qatar World Cup finals.

Memphis Depay and Daley Blind scored in the first half and Denzel Dumfries added a late goal as the Netherlands eliminated the United States from the World Cup with a 3-1 victory Saturday that advanced the Dutch to the quarterfinals.
Second-half substitute Haji Wright cut the U.S. deficit to 2-1 in the 76th minute when Christian Pulisic’s cross hit his trailing foot and popped over goalkeeper Andries Noppert and into the net. But Dumfries, who assisted on the first two goals, scored on a volley in the 81st.
Runners-up in 1974, 1978 and 2010, the Oranje extended their unbeaten streak to 19 games and face Argentina or Australia on Friday.
It was a disappointing end for a rebuilt U.S. team hoping to advance past the round of 16 for the first time since 2002. Using the second-youngest squad in the tournament, the Americans achieved the bare...

Doha, Nov 21 (Ians) Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal has sounded a battle cry ahead of his side’s debut in the 2022 World Cup finals later on Monday, saying he believes his team can lift the title that has always eluded them.
The Dutch were runners-up to Germany in 1974 and to Argentina in 1978. They were beaten by Andres Iniesta’s injury time goal for Spain in South Africa in 2010.
Van Gaal led the Dutch to third place in the 2014 World Cup finals in Brazil, with a team that included players such as Arjen Robben, Robin van Persie and Wesley Sneijder, but in his press conference ahead of Monday’s game against Senegal, the coach insisted his current side is better, reports Xinhua.
This Netherlands team is led by Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk and also includes Fc Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong and Bayern Munich’s Matthijs de Ligt.

Football Manager 2016 is due for release on November 15 and with 2015/16 season well underway (in real life) it’s time to think about who FM16 will select as their best players on the new game.
The beautifully-accurate football simulation doesn’t tend to get many things wrong therefore the players who make this list should be proud of their achievements and start to believe (if they don’t already) that they’re the finest footballers on the planet.
Last year’s top 15 list featured, Toni Kroos, Arturo Vidal, Radamel Falcao and Robin van Persie yet due to the influx of talent currently on offer in world football, I have predicted that they will just miss out on this year’s list. Other big players such as Thomas Muller, Thiago Silva and Alexis Sanchez once again missed the cut although will still be key players on this year’s release.

The footballing elite is an unforgiving category for players to find themselves in, regardless of how much pride you can take from being among the world’s top talents.
FIFA’s launch day ritual for fans is to scan through for the best players on the game, and while many of the names are the classics, there’s a hungry chasing pack, and this time around, they appear to have leapt up the rankings after pouncing on poor seasons from some of FIFA 15’s finest.
Falcao could be one of the biggest casualties from a torrid 2014/15, while Robin Van Persie will also drop out of the top 10, and Franck Ribery could also see others surpass him after an injury-ravaged season which could threaten his career.

Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign Christian Benteke from Aston Villa, according to Metro.
Louis van Gaal is still on the lookout for a first class striker and the Red Devils were linked with Paris Saint-Germain’s Edinson Cavani earlier this week as they look to replace Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao.
Reports now claim that they have now agreed to pay out the Aston Villa frontman’s release clause which stands at £32.5 million.
The 24-year-old ended last season in fine form and re-established himself under the guidance of Tim Sherwood as one of the Premier League’s most deadly strikers.
Liverpool and Chelsea had also been monitoring the player who scored 15 goals in 33 games during the 2014/15 season.
Despite the reports Tim Sherwood expects his striker to stay at Villa Park.

Sunderland enquired about the availability of Robin van Persie shortly before his move to Turkish side Fenerbahce. WhatCulture Safc understands that, prior to his Manchester United departure, the Dutch star attracted attention from a number of Premier League clubs – with sources in Manchester indicating that the Black Cats were firmly in the mix.
It’s no shock that the tenth highest goalscorer in Premier League history would generate such interest, but the fact that Sunderland – perennial relegation strugglers for the past few seasons – would even think of making a bid for van Persie shows surprising ambition and gall.
One must assume that the club felt the chance to work under fellow countryman Dick Advocaat would have been a major selling point for the striker, who fans would have surely welcomed to the Stadium of Light with rapturous enthusiasm.

After strong rumours on Friday night that Bastian Schweinsteiger was on the verge of a move to Manchester United to reunite with former Bayern Munich boss Louis Van Gaal, his current club have publicly confirmed that an agreement has been reached between the two clubs.
Bild had reported on Friday night that a deal amounting to €20 million was on the table, and Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has now confirmed that the deal is heading towards completion.
That follows swiftly on from Bayern’s new signing Joshua Kimmich letting the cat out of the bag during his press conference when he said he was “disappointed Bastian will leave us this summer.”
Rummenigge admitted that the club’s hand was effectively forced when the German asked to be allowed to take on another challenge before the end of his career.

Manchester United have been told they must break their transfer record if they want Napoli’s Argentine international Gonzalo Higuain to be playing at Old Trafford next season.
Sky Sports claim the Italian club have insisted that the striker will only leave Stadio San Paolo if his £72m buyout clause is met after The Red Devils and Arsenal were linked with his signature.
If Louis Van Gaal was to successfully sign the former-Real Madrid star, he would have to top last year’s investment of £59.7m on Angel Di Maria, a deal that would take up a significant percentage of Dutchman’s summer transfer-budget.

The Columbian, who scored two goals to lead Sevilla to a 3-2 win over Dnipro in the Europa League final last month, has also been heavily linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur after becoming one of the leading lights in Spain.

4. Predicted Starting lineups
This is almost certainly how Arsenal will lineup for the clash, with the team practically picking itself. Their back four and goalkeeper are sure starters due to injuries to January signing Gabriel, who has been ruled out of the clash with a hamstring injury and Mathieu Debuchy, who is still on the road to recovery from a shoulder injury. Although it is doubtful they will start ahead of David Ospina and Kieran Gibbs, Wojciech Szczesny and Nacho Monreal face late fitness tests and could make the Arsenal bench.
Mathieu Flamini, Jack Wilshere, Mikel Arteta and Abou Diaby are all expected to miss out due to injury meaning Arsene Wenger’s only decision in midfield is whether to include Tomas Rosicky or not but it is more likely he will opt for the midfield threesome of Coquelin, Ramsey and Cazorla.

When Manchester United completed the signing of Radamel Falcao in September 2014, it was a statement of intent. It was a message to their Premier League rivals that United were ready to play amongst England’s big boys again, after a dour previous campaign under David Moyes.
Falcao’s capture, at the time, was considered a massive coup. The Colombian had shown himself to be one of the greatest strikers on the planet during his days with Porto and Atletico Madrid, and while he had spent the previous eight months rehabilitating a cruciate knee ligament injury – subsequently missing last summer’s World Cup – there was no dimming the excitement. It was a match made in heaven, for United fans anyway.
As a measure of covering their own backs, United agreed to sign the player on a season-long loan, with a view to making the deal permanent if it proved successful.

Manchester United and Louis van Gaal spent roughly £150million on players last summer in a bid to propel the wounded club back to the peak of English and European football. Considering the Dutchman made such an expensive start to his tenure at Old Trafford, you could be forgiven for predicting he might be slightly more quiet during the January window.
Clubs often use the winter period to add their missing link or plug holes in an injury-stricken squad, and as United sit eight points off the pace in the Premier League, they could definitely benefit from taking a similar approach. Van Gaal definitely has some work to do with his team – particularly at the back – if he expects his side to finish near the pointy end of the Premier League table come May.
The Dutchman has been criticised for building an excessively top-heavy side...

Clubs face a real quandary if they’ve allowed their best players to approach the last year of their contracts. Rather than risk losing them for nothing the following summer if they reject a new deal, a lot of sides will cash in on them early to ensure they are given some kind of compensatory satisfaction to soften the blow of losing a player against their will.
However, some other clubs will let their deal run down, to get another year’s service out of them before parting ways for free, and allowing their best talents to force a bidding war for their services in contract terms. It doesn’t always work: Borussia Dortmund had the opportunity to sell former striker Robert Lewandowski, but they opted to keep him for the last year of his contract in order to challenge for silverware, with mixed success to say the least.

Sunderland could welcome back defensive duo Billy Jones and Santiago Vergini for their Premier League clash with Manchester United at the Stadium of Light. Both returned to training this week following layoffs. Emanuele Giaccherini remains a long-term absentee however with the Italian midfielder out for another three weeks with a groin injury.
Manchester United pair Robin van Persie and Antonio Valencia are fit again but new signing Maros Rojo is unavailable for selection as the defender has not received his work permit in time. Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw, Marouane Fellaini and Jesse Lingard all remain out.
Key Stats
Manchester United are unbeaten in 12 league games at Sunderland (W9, D3) since a 2-1 defeat in March 1997.

When Louis Van Gaal released his first Premier League team-sheet and it featured not only Javier Hernandez – a reasonable guess for the chosen under-study for the unfit Robin Van Persie – but also rookie defender Tyler Blackett and Jesse Lingard at left wing-back.
It seems that the Dutchman is keen to show early on how committed he is to his system, and rather than altering the 3-5-2 system he favours, he has handed the Mancunian 20-year-old centre-half his first Premier League start, and deployed Lingard in a more reserved position than he is traditionally used to.
Van Gaal was expected to make compromises in his ideal starting line-up, and Blackett seemed the obvious choice if Jonny Evans failed to make the team, but Lingard’s choice seems more out of left-field:

Head-to-head league record: Manchester United wins 11, draws 5, Swansea wins 6.
Can United recapture their form and better their 13 year low of 64 points from last season? Will Swansea’s eye-catching strike force give Van Gaal nightmares?
For the second season in a row the Welsh side face United on the opening game – though this time at Old Trafford rather than the Liberty – and Garry Monk will be hoping that they can avoid a repeat of the 4-1 defeat handed out by David Moyes.
A lot has happened since then, and Swansea fans might well be buoyed by the fact that they’re not facing the champions this time out. But United have been given an injection with the arrival of extremist manager Louis Van Gaal, of whom you can’t help but expect big things...

Amidst reports from Charlie Nicholas that Arsenal refused to cooperate with Man Utd for a deal for Thomas Vermaelen because of the bad feeling that remains from Robin Van Persie’s move between the two, another theory has emerged.
According to the Mirror, United dropped their interest in the Belgian defender – who looks likely to join Barcelona in a £15m deal – after refusing to listen to Arsenal’s request to swap him for Chris Smalling.
Wenger was reluctant to lose Vermaelen, and offered the centre-back a new contract, only to see it refused as the Belgian looked for more first team football, and the Frenchman will be wary of losing players from his squad ahead of the new season. That goes doubly for players of Vermaelen’s experience, especially with alternatives coming at a premium, which is presumably where the Smalling request came from.

Arsenal’s reputation in recent years has been of a club that lets superstars when they should be fighting tooth and nail to keep them and build on them. The likes of Robin van Persie, Patrick Viera, Cesc Fabregas, Thierry Henry, Ashley Cole and Samir Nasri were all sold when it was believed they still had far more to offer.
Though Arsenal most certainly are guilty of releasing players they should have fought to keep, there are also many players who arguably should have either left Wenger’s team before they did or never even signed with the Gunners to begin with. Whether because they didn’t win any silverware in north London or because they spent long bouts receiving little to no time on the field, there is a contingent of players who we believe wished they never made the move to north London.

In terms of big-money signings, the Gunners have not had much to whet their appetite with in recent seasons. With every transfer window that slams shut, praying to God that their newly-acquired 21 year old striker from Guinea hits the ground running, while their posh city rivals welcome the biggest and best from around Europe, an air of jealousy was apparent. Having to fund a new stadium can take its toll on a club’s forthrightness in the transfer market, and that in turn, will have a knockdown effect on the amount of trophies they acquire. With the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Robin van Persie and even Thierry Henry plucked from thin air, with everything to prove to the gruelling English media, Wenger has been labelled ‘reluctant’ to dip his toes in what can be an unforgiving transfer market.
Last summer, there was a new wave of optimism circling the Emirates.

Manchester United’s away shirt for the 2014-15 season has apparently been revealed prematurely after a Jd Sports shop in Bristol began selling the kit before any official announcement from the club. Eagle-eyed fans spotted the mistake and uploaded images to social networking site Twitter (above).
@craigsmoothy tweeted: “@JDsportsfashion bristol are selling the united away shirt that’s not supposed to be out yet@ManUtd@nikefootball” The official Jd Sports Twitter account @JDsportsfashion replied: “Hi Craig, we’ve informed the correct department of this error – Thanks!”
The kit, which is all white with a black collar, is the first shirt to bear sponsors Chevrolet’s logo and the last that will be made by Nike after the American sportswear company ended their 13-year deal with the club earlier this month. United have since agreed a world-record £750 million deal with Adidas which will begin from the start of the 2015-16 season.

Argentina have injury woes of their own with Angel di Maria sidelined with a thigh injury. The winger may recover in time to feature in the final however should his country make it through to the last round. Striker Sergio Aguero is back in contention after recovering from a thigh injury of his own while defender Marcos Rojo is free for selection after serving a one-match suspension.

Manchester United have released their new home kit for the 2014-15 Premier League season, according to the BBC. The strip was posted on the club’s official Twitter account this afternoon and was sported by Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie and Shinji Kagawa.
As was to be expected, the new home shirt remains in the Red Devil’s traditional colours – red, white and black – and boasts a new-look collar. There is a small message written inside the back of the neck which reads ‘youth, courage, greatness’ which is said to typify the Manchester club’s core values.
The kit is emblazoned with sponsors Chevrolet’s golden logo in the centre with the swooped tick of Nike in the top right-hand corner. United are in the final year of their agreement with Nike, who are one of three competing companies to sponsor the club after the current deal expires.

It doesn’t really surprise us when the likes of Luis Suarez, Sergio Aguero or Robin Van Persie score a world class goal or grab a hat-trick in the Premier League. It doesn’t really surprise us when the likes of David Silva, Aaron Ramsey or Juan Mata slot a perfectly weighted through-ball to assist one of these goals. It doesn’t really surprise us when the likes of Yaya Toure, Steven Gerrard or Eden Hazard produce that moment of magic to change a game.
But which players are capable of exerting their own special influence on a game, yet go largely unnoticed in comparison? Which players are perhaps not so well-known or recognised, yet are equally important to their clubs?

Bayern Munich and Netherlands winger Arjen Robben has been linked with a move to Manchester United recently, but should the Red Devils sign the 30-year-old?
Robben is enjoying an impressive World Cup at present with the Holland national side, and is the tournament’s sixth-highest goalscorer – level with compatriot Robin van Persie with three goals.
Will he line up alongside van Persie at Old Trafford next season?
The Red Devils have just appointed Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal as their new boss following David Moyes’s disastrous reign, and Lvg knows the player well.
It was van Gaal who brought Robben to current club Bayern in 2009, signing him from Real Madrid, and the duo spent two years together at the Allianz Arena, winning the Bundesliga, Dfb-Pokal and Dfb-Supercup in 2010.
And the new United manager “is desperate” to be reunited with Robben at the Theatre of Dreams next season,...

After Liverpool striker Luis Suarez disgraced himself yet again and confirmed his status as a vampire, by biting centre back Giorgio Chiellini on the shoulder, in Uruguay’s 1-0 victory over Italy on Tuesday – the third fellow professional footballer he has bitten in his career, after Psv’s Otman Bakkal and Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic – we started thinking…
If Suarez is a vampire, which other classic horror monsters could have been hiding in full sight amongst football’s ranks over the years?
The world of football boasts a wide variety of characters whose looks, traits and performances resemble some of the classic antagonists in movie history – namely the Universal Monsters. The classic Universal Monsters date back to 1923 and the classic era went on (with the likes of Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney, Lon Chaney Jr and Bela Lugosi) until 1960, but there have been more additions to the monster roster since then.

World Cup Schedule Day 7:

Spain v Chile - 8pm on BBC One
Cameroon v Croatia - 11pm on ITV
Match of the Day: Spain v Chile
This always looked like one of the best fixtures of the first round of the World Cup, but it has even more drama heaped on it thanks to the Spanish capitulation against the Netherlands.
Many predicted that the Spanish would not be as strong as in previous tournaments, but nobody could have foreseen the thrashing they got from Robin Van Persie and co last Friday.
Chile looked strong in the win against Australia and should be riding high with confidence, so don't expect them to be playing for the draw. There is a genuine chance that holders Spain could be the first team out of the tournament by the end of the evening.

Manchester United are this week being tipped to join derby rivals Manchester City in the race to sign Arsenal right-back Bacary Sagna.
Incoming manager Louis van Gaal has reportedly identified the 31-year-old as a summer target and wants the defender to compete with Rafael for a fullback slot at Old Trafford.
Cross-city rivals City however are also interested, with some reports suggesting the new Premier League champions are set to offer Sagna a four-year deal worth somewhere in the region of £100,000-a-week.
Both Manchester clubs have plucked players from the Emirates in the past, with City doing so quite memorably when they signed Emmanuel Adebayor in 2009, while Samir Nasri and Gael Clichy have both swapped the Emirates for the Etihad in the past. United meanwhile landed Robin van Persie from the Gunners in 2012.
But is Sagna really the ideal solution for either side’s defensive issues?...

The Chosen One has gone. After months of speculation about the future of Sir Alex Ferguson’s replacement David Moyes, Manchester United have finally pulled the trigger after what can only be described as a woeful season for the former Premier League champions, a season epitomised by a lifeless, uninspired 2-0 defeat against Moyes’ old club Everton last weekend. While few will disagree with the sacking of Moyes, what this saga proves is that football has moved on, times have changed.
Prior to Moyes’s appointment back in 2013, Manchester United were lauded for their history of loyalty, demonstrating the lone fight against modern football’s relentless attitude of sacking managers after a string of poor results. The chopping and changing of managers within the modern game is frantic and arguably at times barbaric in its justification. With Moyes however, Manchester United were seen...

The victory will have tasted all the sweeter after United overturned the 2 goal deficit from their dismal first leg showing in Greece. As the Old Trafford fans applauded their team off after the final whistle, there was little doubt that the result was a ray of light in an otherwise bleak season. Reports have even emerged of the much beleaguered Moyes seen smiling on the touchline, an image the United faithful have not seen a great deal of this season.
But somewhere amidst the hysteria of qualification and the euphoria of a great European night in Manchester, problems still remain. It appears that...

Manchester United are in the unusual position of already knowing that current captain Nemanja Vidic won’t be at the club next season. Therefore, David Moyes must decide one who would be the best man to lead the team next season. It’s also likely that a number of other senior players may also move on such as Patrice Evra, Rio Ferdinand and even Robin van Persie.
It’s also reasonably likely that the squad will look quite different next season as Moyes looks to do a rebuilding job of sorts. One player that we all know will be integral to United’s plans next season and beyond is Wayne Rooney, especially now he has signed a new long-term deal – but it remains to be seen if he is seen as having right character for the role.
Personally, I would be in favour...

It was one of the more uneventful clashes between Manchester United and Arsenal, but it was fine defensive work and goalkeeping displays that resulted in no goals being scored by either side. With both sides looking to bounce back from disappointing results at the weekend, it is no surprise that it was a tentative affair.
Robin van Persie had a headed attempt saved by man of the match Wojciech Szczęsny, while David De Gea pulled off a number of top saves to keep out Arsenal’s on-target attempts. Antonio Valencia also headed Laurent Koscielny’s effort off the line, and there were also chances fluffed by the former Arsenal man, van Persie.
A point was perhaps deserved by both sides, and gives each of them more confidence after their abysmal weekend. Arsenal lost 5-1 to Liverpool in a surprising domination at Anfield, but they were still...

The Red Devils travel to take on an Arsenal side smarting after a 5-1 mauling from Liverpool, knowing their Champions League campaign hangs in the balance.
Key Stats
Arsenal welcome back Yaya Sanogo and Mathieu Flamini – the former after five months out with a back injury, the latter returning after a three-match ban.
However, Aaron Ramsey, Kim Kallstrom, Thomas Vermaelen, Abou Diaby and Theo Walcott all remain injured, while Manchester United have lost Phil Jones, Jonny Evans and Marouane Fellaini to the treatment room.
Manchester United are protecting a record of only one loss in 13 against Arsenal in all competitions, the only blotch on the unbeaten record being a 1-0 home Arsenal win in May 2011.
The stats look worse for Arsenal taken historically as the Gunners have lost 20 times to their rivals in the Premier League, more so than any other team.

Manchester United's first season with David Moyes may not exactly be going to plan, but at least fans of the football club had something to laugh about when the BBC subtitles team struggled to get a handle on their young midfielder Adnan Januzaj.
Casual Match of the Day 2 viewers might have been left puzzled and wondering whether manager Moyes had made a last ditch transfer window signing, when the name "Janet Jazz Jazz Jam" accompanied Juan Mata, Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney on a list of their forwards.
The error occurred during a segment when host Mark Chapman was reeling off the talent in the Man United squad, following their shock draw against Fulham at the weekend.
It is the latest subtitles blunder from the BBC, who recently welcomed in "the year of whores" during the Chinese New Year celebrations for the Year of the Horse.

The task of replacing Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United was never going to be a walk in the park for any manager, let alone a man who has never won silverware with his previous club. David Moyes was handed the tough task of taking over as Manchester United boss in the summer of 2013 and he alongside new Chief Executive Ed Woodward made no secret of the players they wanted to bring in to the club.
Manchester United have always managed to lure in some of the best players to help capture the Premier League crown. Investing heavily in players such as Robin van Persie, Dimitar Berbatov and Juan Mata whilst also investing in youth to solidify the then-dominance of Manchester United for their future. Players like Nick Powell, Phil Jones and David de Gea were brought in to continue playing the Manchester United way.

Manchester United’s season plunged all new depths on Sunday afternoon as they were held by basement side Fulham at Old Trafford.
Steve Sidwell and Darren Bent scored either side of two quick-fire Robin van Persie and Michael Carrick goals to stun the champions and leave them off the pace in the race for the top four.
United are now nine points adrift of fourth placed Liverpool and if this result doesn’t end their hopes of grabbing a Champions League place next season, it at least puts a big dent in them.
Yet it could have been worse because up until the 78th minute it looked as though the Red Devils would crash to their ninth league defeat of a truly miserable season so far.
But a draw against the topflight’s rock-bottom side is still an ignominious result, more so considering...

A frustrated David Moyes bemoaned his side’s draw with basement side Fulham as Manchester United blew the chance to keep pace with the top six.
With Tottenham and Liverpool both winning this weekend, United had to win against bottom of the league Fulham to keep within touching distance of the sides above them.
But Steve Sidwell and Darrent Bent struck in the first and second halves to deny the champions and leave them nine points off fourth-placed Liverpool.
After the game, Moyes said in his post-match press conference that his side were unlucky not to have taken the three points and claimed they should have won 3-1.
The Scot said:
We deserved to win the game, we deserved to get back in the game – even when it was 2-1 with about five minutes left Fulham never came up the pitch so it...

Manchester United were held to a draw by basement side Fulham thanks to a late goal from Darren Bent.
Steve Sidwell had earlier given the visitors a shock first-half lead but United fought back to go in front with quickfire goals from Robin van Persie and Michael Carrick.
But the drama wasn’t over and Bent would have the last say when his close ranged header on 90 minutes again reduced Old Trafford to silence.
United started the game brightly but fell behind when Sidwell stabbed in Lewis Holtby’s cross after 19 minutes as the bottom of the league club went in front.
The Red Devils may even have been two goals down at half time when Muamer Tankovic broke with another counter attack and played in Kieran Richardson, who blazed over.
United pressed for an equalizer and upped the tempo and at last...

David Moyes has endured a very public baptism of fire in his first season in charge of Manchester United, with the Red Devils suffering one of their worst seasons in decades. While taking over from Sir Alex Ferguson was always going to be a task more Sisyphean than Herculean for the Scot, few would have predicted United’s current predicament.
Languishing in 7th place, the same number of points adrift of a Champions League spot, United appear on a collision course with the Europa Cup, and with the competition’s prestige is at all time low, few will be looking forward to flicking over to ITV 2 on Thursday nights, for sub-zero ties in the Eastern Bloc, watching a ball zinging across artificial greenery.
But Manchester United are, after all, Manchester United; even without Ferguson in charge, it would be foolish to write them off.
