In the finale of the 2012 television series The River, a character says what everyone else is thinking: “It’s never gonna let us go.” This foreboding last line is, of course, in reference to the show’s sinuous and uncanny namesake. From there the audience is left to wonder what happened to the crew of the Magus as they drifted toward imminent danger.
This wasn’t the first time a TV show visited the Amazon; a short-lived 1999 drama created by author Peter Benchley beat Oren Peli and Michael R. Perry’s series to the punch. The economy’s a mess but Sofía’s hair is perfect in Alejandra Márquez Abella’s “The Good Girls,” a film that is all surface in a way that is not, for once, a negative. The primped, powdered and shoulder-padded story of the fall from grace of a 1980s Mexican socialite is all about buffed and lustrous surfaces — poreless skin, laquered nails, silken fabrics — all the veneer of social superiority that money can buy. It’s an illusion, of course, that such a thin plating of wealth offers any protection against the changeable climate outside. But it’s such a seductive lie that the vacuous, complacent people thus ensheathed are prone to believe it, forgetting that their glaze of perfection is as brittle as the burnt-sugar topping on a crème brûlée. It’s delicious when it cracks.

Sofía Hernandez (Ilse Salas) has everything: three children she can ignore, servants and maids to take care of her every whim, and a husband (Flavio Medina’s Fernando) who inherited his wealth from his father and still has yet to really work for it thanks to Uncle Javier (Diego Jáuregui) managing things like he always had. Theirs is a charmed life of opulence and excess wherein they can afford to treat aristocratic etiquette and tradition as sacrosanct while “new money” commoners try to enter their social circle as though they are animals just arrived from the wild. Sofía and Fer are practically European by contrast, propping up their Mexican backyard with class and grace. All that could make life better is Julio Iglesias serenading some “Happy Birthday” magic.
Unfortunately for them, writer/director Alejandra Márquez Abella ensures their false sense of financial security crosses paths with Mexico’s 1982 economic crisis.

Here’s a theory: For any TV creators who get more than a season to prove themselves, it’s Season 2 where they really figure out what kind of show they’re making. And with “Narcos,” we see some pretty clear proof of that.
Season 1 of Netflix’s fact-based drama — about how cocaine created criminal empires in Colombia and beyond — was jam-packed with over 15 years of drug cartel history, and the result, unfortunately, was not consistently engaging for anyone other than the most passionate fans of the subject matter. But from the first moments of Season 2, the Netflix series shows new focus. Thanks to a much narrower scope — the 18-month hunt for Pablo Escobar, following his escape from La Catedral prison — characters are allowed to breathe more. The power struggles have real weight. And the potential for seasons to come becomes clear.

The series finale, appropriately titled "End," was written by showrunners Robert and Michelle King, and directed by Robert King. Margulies told Entertainment Weekly the finale will be "satisfying, uplifting and sad." The showrunners have Not shot down that Josh Charles return rumor, so here's hoping for some kind of flashback/vision/cameo/thing. Also, here's hoping for more of this, from Alicia and Jason:

An aspiring dancer whose sense of fun is starting to look a lot like immaturity, Frances is having trouble negotiating that tricky stage between studenthood and adulthood. Although the trip down The River was cut short just as the series was getting good, the DVD release of the Complete First Season capture the magic of the eight episodes and features enough bonus material to please fans of the short-lived series. From Oren Peli (director of Paranormal Activity) and executive produced by Steven Spielberg, the series was shot in the "found footage" style of filming and a premise of a show within a show set on the mysterious and magical Amazon River. The series featured Bruce Greenwood, Joe Anderson, Leslie Hope, Eloise Mumford, Paul Blackthorne, Thomas Kretschmann, Daniel Zacapa, Shaun Parkes, Paulina Gaitan, Scott Michael Foster, Katie Featherston, and Lee Tergesen. Chicago – I had some notable problems with ABC’s “The River,” saying in my review of the series premiere, “…while the show has effective moments of horror, they never quite build the way you want them to in a cohesive piece due to the creators feeling the need to get at least one major scare between every break.” Watching where the show went with the first season DVD, hitting stores this week, I stand by my criticisms (I have problems with every episode) but I kind of wish that the creators had been given time to iron out their kinks. The fact is that there simply isn’t enough programming on network TV that one could call daring and while I think “The River” was flawed it was undeniably unlike anything else in your DVR.

The search is truly over for the Magus crew. ABC has cancelled The River, their mid-season thriller series, after just one season of eight episodes.
The River follows the search for Emmet Cole (Bruce Greenwood), an adventurer, TV host, father and husband who disappeared while on an expedition deep in the uncharted waters of the Amazon River. Others in the cast include Joe Anderson, Leslie Hope, Eloise Mumford, Paul Blackthorne, Thomas Kretschmann, Daniel Zacapa, Shaun Parkes, and Paulina Gaitan.
The TV series had an okay premiere, registering a 2.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 8.35 million viewers. Unfortunately later episodes didn't do nearly as well and towards the end of its short season it went as low as a 1.3 in the demo with 4.09 million.

2010’s Mexican cannibal horror film, We Are What We Are, has been in the running for an American English-language remake after Memento picked up the rights to develop the project earlier this year.
Eager to get underway, after the first film found substantial success and critical acclaim internationally (not often a cannibal horror film does that), the rising star Riley Keough (the upcoming Jack & Diane and Magic Mike) has been set as one of the leading sisters, as well as Julia Garner (Martha Marcy May Marlene) opposite.
Here’s the synopsis for writer-director Jorge Michel Grau’s original film, Somos lo que hay:
Three teenagers are wary about holding up a rather disturbing family tradition in writer and director Jorge Michel Grau’s unusual blend of horror, suspense and family drama, We Are What We Are (Somos Lo Que Hay). Alfredo (Francisco Barreiro), Julian (Alan Chavez) and Sabina (Paulina Gaitan...

This evening, ABC aired the season finale of The River. What's next? Will the TV show return for a second season or will it be cancelled instead?
For those who aren't familiar with the ABC series, The River follows the search for beloved TV host and explorer (Bruce Greenwood) some six months after he and his team went missing down the Amazon. His wife, son, their crew and a documentary team go after them on what turns out to be a dangerous rescue mission. The cast includes Joe Anderson, Leslie Hope, Eloise Mumford, Paul Blackthorne, Thomas Kretschmann, Daniel Zacapa, Shaun Parkes, and Paulina Gaitan.
Sadly, it's almost certain that The River will be cancelled. The thriller series debuted back in the February with a pair of episodes. The first hour attracted a 2.6 in the coveted 18-49 demographic with 8.35 million total viewers. By the...

"Mexico City. 2002, 2006, 2010. A cop. A hostage. A wife. Corruption, violence, vengeance. Three destinies, during 30 days, during three Soccer World Cups. Three ways to fight in order to survive." This is the synopsis of "Days Of Grace." Starring Eva Longoria, Carlos Bardem (Javier's brother), Miguel Rodarte and Paulina Gaitan, while writer/Director Everardo Gout's first feature doesn't have a U.S. release date yet (it screened out of competition at Cannes last year), it does have a rather interesting soundtrack worth noting and maybe that'll give it extra attention.
Out digitally April 3rd via Lakeshore Records, the soundtrack includes Massive Attack's Robert "3D" Del Naja featuring the one and only sultry-voiced Scarlett Johannsson, (presumably a remix of her "Summertime" George Gerswhin song that she performed on the Unexpected Dreams – Songs From the Stars compilation).

We've been on "The River" and its scare-a-minute ride for three hours now, and the characters only seem to get more mysterious as we go.
Before this week's "A Better Man" (Tues., Feb. 21, 9 p.m. Est on ABC), in which the Magus crew finds one of Emmet Cole's missing team members who's been cursed, we've got an exclusive look at one of the most cursed characters on the show. She sees dead people and she can sense bad things before they happen, but she can only warn her fellow travelers in Spanish.
Jahel Valenzuela (Paulina Gaitan), the youngest member of the crew, is by far the person we know least about. We've been told that she grew up on the Magus with her father and that she has certain powers, and we've even seen her intuition at work, but is there more going on that isn't translating?

ABC continues to try to replace some of their aging hour-long TV series. Once Upon a Time will be renewed but how about The River? Cancelled after one short season?
The River revolves around the search for beloved TV host and explorer Doctor Emmet Cole (Bruce Greenwood) some six months after he and his team went missing down the Amazon. So after my screening of Safe House last night I journeyed home to watch ABC's two-hour premiere of "The River". After laying out my hopes for it yesterday I wondered if I would be able to give it a fair shake or if I was expecting too much. As it turns out, it's not too bad and I will continue watching, but there are definite causes for concern. First off, for those that didn't watch or don't know what it's about, the big selling point is that it comes from Paranormal Activity writer/director Oren Peli who helped come up with the story with Paranormal Activity 2 screenwriter Michael R. Perry, Michael Green (Green Lantern) and Zack Estrin ("Prison Break", "Tru Calling"). As you would expect from such a teaming, it's roots in the "found footage" style of story-telling are definitely there, but it all seems a bit arbitrary, but...

Chicago – Two hours of ABC’s found footage horror drama tonight, “The River,” from Executive Producer Steven Spielberg, should at least do one thing for the show — weed out those not interested in following it long-term. Personally, I think it would have been wiser to lower viewers into this bizarre body of water slowly instead of with back-to-back episodes as the double dip amplifies the show’s flaws instead of leaving them wanting more. Having said that, network TV viewers complain all the time about how the titans of television aren’t willing to take risks any more. “The River” is a risk and deserves credit purely for originality. The execution needs to improve if they want to turn that credit into anything more substantial.

From what I've seen of The River - ABC's new TV show from co-creator Oren Peli - things are looking really good. This isn't based solely on previews. I've caught a few decent chunks of the first episode and I was impressed; a full review is coming soon.
Today, ABC revealed a clip called "Lead Cameraman" that offers a look at the February 7th premiere. Two back to back episodes will air on that date from 9pm-11pm. Bruce Greenwood, Joe Anderson, Paul Blackthorne, Paulina Gaitan, Leslie Hope, Eloise Mumford, Shaun Parkes, Thomas Kretschmann and Daniel Zacapa star.
The River concerns the search for a famed explorer who goes missing on the Amazon. His family - with a television crew - embark on a mission to rescue him. Creep stuff ensues.

The River: Season 1 Trailer Released
Are you ready to be scared?
If so, ABC's upcoming supernatural/horror series The River may be just for you, judging from a recently released trailer. The River brings us to the heart of the Amazon, where famed nature show host Emmet Cole had been missing (and presumed dead) for six months. Once his emergency beacon goes off, though, his family and crew make the trek back down to his last location on the off chance that he may be alive. However, what they find there is a force more powerful (and terrifying) than anyone could have imagined and the goal soon goes from rescuing Emmet to self-preservation.
The trailer for The River is full of shaky cam, tense silences, and an increasingly fractured group of Dr. Cole's loved ones trying to make it out of the jungle alive. The show may be set...
