McFarland grew up in the south end of Louisville, Kentucky and lives in Los Angeles, California. He is best known for producing the film The Wolf of Wall Street, for which he earned an Academy Award nomination. In 2018, McFarland formed McFarland Entertainment, an independent content development and production company for film and television.
The first film developed and produced by McFarland under the McFarland Entertainment banner is Emancipation, directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Will Smith. The movie is based on the true story of Peter, the enslaved African American man depicted in the 19th century photograph known as the Scourged Back.
