After she lost her voice on stage in the 70s, Collins dropped off the folk map – but here she comes clean about her grief, her recovery and her music
Life imitating art? In a tale of treachery and tragedy straight out of a ballad, the English folk singer Shirley Collins dramatically lost her voice on stage in the late 70s. Her husband had just her left for another woman, who’d taken to showing up at Collins’s gigs – rubbing salt in the wounds by wearing the offending ex’s jumpers. Humiliated, Collins opened her mouth but nothing came out. “He undid me. I should have got angry, but I got heartbroken,” she explains in this portrait of the artist as an older and wiser woman.

Yesterday, Thurston Moore released Demolished Thoughts, his fourth and inarguably best solo album in the three decades since he co-founded Sonic Youth. Unlike his previous song-oriented solo works, Demolished Thoughts finds its sound--lush, lonely, Beck Hansen-assisted rock, retextured with acoustics--and sticks with it from start to finish. After one of the most enviable and inspiring careers in indie rock, Moore continues to reinvent his image and offerings with unexpected approaches.

Steven Tyler: Several years ago, Guided by Voices frontman Robert Pollard released an infamous collection called Relaxation of the Asshole, a best-of culled from the worst of his drunken banter. Even if you dislike his band, it's sort of an essential one-time listen.

Every year, the Library of Congress chooses 25 sound recordings to preserve in its National Recording Registry. This year's batch is a diverse group of America's best and brightest, including the song that best represents America's favorite pastime: baseball. Yes, "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" by Edward Meeker (not Billy Corgan's version) is now in the Library of Congress. Other additions include "Tumbling Tumbleweeds," by Roy Rogers, Tim Spencer and Bob Nolan a.k.a. The Sons of the Pioneers, Al Green's "Let's Stay Together," Henry Mancini's "The Music From 'Peter Gunn'", "Stand by Your Man" by Tammy Wynette, Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band's "Trout Mask Replica," and Steely Dan's 1977 album "Aja". Guess the library needed to fill their jazz flute quota. The registry also included some less musical recordings including the songs of humpback whales and the Gopac Strategy and Instructional Tapes...

Fifty years after Jean-Luc Godard, Serge Bozon and the .young turks. of Cahiers du cinéma resolved that the best way to criticize movies was to make their own films. The result was the creation of another exciting .new wave. of critic-filmmakers, hailing from the iconoclastic film magazine La lettre du cinéma(1997-2005), boldly storming the gates of the French film establishment.
The Film Society of Lincoln Center brings writer, director, actor and DJ, Serge Bozon to New York to present this first major North American survey of films by the Lettre du cinéma circle as well as to curate and present a series of screenings of rarities (along with Anthology Film Archives) that have influenced his work.
