The 2nd Creative Investors’ Conference, organized by the San Sebastian Festival and CAA Media Finance, took place as the U.S. saw history in the making: the end of the Writers Guild of America’s 148 day strike. That set the tone of proceedings at the two-day confab and maybe added a slightly larger sense of forward momentum to the central issue at stake: a State of the Union take on the challenges and opportunities for the U.S and global film industry, from a market and producers’ perspective.
Multiple audience members, many from Spain and Europe, commented on their delight at the caliber of panelists and attendees, many at the top of their game. Their answers to questions marshalled by CAA Media Finance’s Roeg Sutherland on one key panel and San Sebastian’s Wendy Mitchell on many more, were often direct and sometimes counter-intuitive but convincing; which is what...

San Sebastian’s inaugural Creative Investors Conference framed a panel discussion on Storytelling’s New Horizons featuring Phil Hunt of Head Gear Films, Bankside Films and Bohemia Media; Karin Chien of Louverture Films, and dGenerate; and Diana Williams of Kinetic Energy Entertainment.
How to navigate new technologies, new ways of thinking and how to broaden storytelling to encompass diversity and different communities were some of the questions posed by moderator Wendy Mitchell.
“We are looking at new ways of thinking: How storytellers and companies can use new technologies, how to look at an industry that’s more sustainable and more reflective of society, as well, today,” said Mitchell.

They came, they saw 10 higher-end Spanish movie pitches and maybe they were conquered. Just turning up, however, was maybe the most important factor.
Never in the history of the San Sebastian Festival have so many high-powered U.S. execs descended on the Spanish resort as for the two days of the first Creative Investors Conference, taking place over Sept. 19-20 and co-organized by CAA Media Finance.
At the Conference, investors debated with a level of candour above run-of-the-mill seminars, the state and future of the movie business across a total eight panels, moderated with verve by consultant Wendy Mitchell.
Since these are many of the guys running or making the running in the international part of that business, it was well worth noting some of their takeaways:
Europe’s Big Hope: Platforms Really Embracing Cinema
In the U.S., the platforms already buy big when it comes to movies. Think Sundance.

During the Zurich Summit, the future of festivals and markets was discussed, with everyone agreeing that this is a period of “limbo” until a new era is ushered in. The closing panel of the Zurich Summit focused on the future of film festivals and film markets in this new era. The first question posed by the panel’s moderator, Wendy Mitchell, was how this pause in events will change festivals’ mindsets. Paolo Moretti, Delegate General of Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight, stated that it is still necessary to follow the same processes as before. It was a frustrating and dark moment when Cannes was cancelled, but they are already working on next year’s edition. Carlo Chatrian, co-director of the Berlinale, mentioned that the public in Zurich was an answer: “We can stream, but the human factor is important. We want people to be sharing emotions.” For her part, Lili Hinstin, former artistic director.
At the Zurich Summit, the burning issue of film production during the pandemic was discussed by European professionals, who nevertheless also looked to the future. With the future of the film industry remaining uncertain, one of the key topics discussed at Zff Industry’s Zurich Summit was film production during the pandemic, and how to move forward. As the moderator of the panel, Wendy Mitchell, mentioned, everyone’s belief is that everything will start up again in March, but is this really the case? Producer Katrin Renz (Tellfilm) offered her experience from her upcoming period drama film Monte Verità by Stefan Jäger (see the news), which she is planning to carry on shooting in Vienna. The initial plan was to be there in June, which proved impossible, so after the shoots in Ticino, Italy, and more recently in studios in Cologne, Renz now has to persuade her cast and crew to visit.
Venice 2020: The features, both produced or co-produced in Europe, took home the Grand Prize and the Verona Film Club Award, respectively. At an unusual but highly successful Venice Film Festival this year, it’s finally prize-giving time. The International Film Critics’ Week, run by the National Union of Italian Film Critics, has announced the awards of its 35th edition. The international jury, composed of Wendy Mitchell, Eugenio Renzi and Jay Weissberg, gave the Grand Prize of €5,000 (made possible by Taranto Town Hall) to Ghosts, the debut by Turkish filmmaker Azra Deniz Okyay. The jury said it was “a vivid portrayal of the tensions currently tearing apart Turkish society; the film boldly explores the intersection of public and private anxiety”. The Verona Film Club Award, decided upon by a jury made up of members of the Verona Film Club aged under 35, went to Bad Roads by Natalya Vorozhbit from...
High-profile doc “The Rossellinis,” described as a tongue-in-cheek autobiographical look at the descendants of iconic Italian director Roberto Rossellini’s extended family, is among the standout world premieres in the lineup of the upcoming Venice Film Festival’s Critics’ Week.
Directed by Roberto Rossellini’s grandson, Alessandro Rossellini, the doc is unspooling out of competition and will close the separately-run Venice section that will feature seven first works in competition. It’s not yet know whether Isabella Rossellini will be on the Lido to promote the film.
The competition titles — all first works as well as world premieres — include “Topside,” the feature film debut of U.S. directorial duo Celine Held and Logan George, which is described in promotional materials as a drama set deep in the underbelly of New York City, where a five year-old girl and her mother live among a community that has claimed the abandoned subway tunnels as their home.

Haugesund, Norway — On Wednesday morning, shortly before this year’s New Nordic Films Works in Progress screening was due to begin, a handful of industry veterans sat for a panel that picked up right where last year’s Wip program left off.
Presented in collaboration with Europa Distribution, the panel – called “The Value Chain: A Case Study” – tracked the serendipitous path of the recent Danish hit “Queen of Hearts,” one of the standout titles of the 2018 Works in Progress session.
Moderated by Screen journalist Wendy Mitchell, the panel brought together sales agent Silje Nikoline Glimsdal (TrustNordisk), festival consultant Christian Juhl Lemche (Danish Film Institute), Lithuanian festival programmer Aiste Racaityte (Kino Pavasaris) and British distributor Frances Harvey (Thunderbird Releasing), with each panelist detailing their own experiences shepherding the film into its eventual release.
Both Lemche and Glimsdal stressed the importance of securing a strong festival launch when handling a film with challenging subject matter.

International Film Festival RotterdamReality Check report
The 2019 Iffr Reality Check conference tackled the thorny subject of development, and how filmmakers can better exploit their own content, the plethora of new platforms and the end-user to the benefit of all. The day was divided into four parts, comprising three-panel debates and a series of intensive break-out discussions on the questions raised throughout the day. A closing session presented conclusions drawn from these deliberations.
Opening the day, Iffr director Bero Beyer described how the wide spectrum of content that we see across all platforms is developed within generally narrow constraints and that it is therefore imperative that the industry offers/creates/allows for a “wide space” for ideas to develop, mature and ultimately be realised. Great talent can turn to compete for media to tell their stories, he warned, and they could, therefore, be lost to the film world.
