New York — It may not have won any Tony Awards, but the charming musical based on the cult holiday film "A Christmas Story" will be hitting the Northeast this winter.
Producers said Monday that the show will play The Bushnell in Hartford, Conn., from Nov. 12-17, The Wang Theatre in Boston from Nov. 20-Dec. 8, and then landing at The Theater at Madison Square Garden from Dec. 11-29.
Nominated for three Tonys, the musical features a score by composer-lyricist team Benj Pasek and Justin Paul and a book by Joseph Robinette based on the writings of radio humorist Jean Shepherd and the 1983 film favorite.

Most importantly, the songwriters discuss Dogfight - the inspiration for it, writing of it, the recent Off-Broadway production directed by Joe Mantello, and, now, the absolutely spectacular cast album...

Berry Gordy is probably not having a very good day. Though his autobiographical jukebox tuner “Motown: The Musical” continues to dominate the Broadway box office, the show was shut out of the best musical category of the 67th annual Tony Awards. This category—the gold standard of Broadway marketing—boasted some of the biggest surprises when the nominations were announced April 30. Critic- and crowd-favorites “Kinky Boots” and “Matilda: The Musical” made the cut—as well as the long-closed “A Christmas Story: The Musical” and “Bring It On: The Musical.” The inclusion of “Christmas Story,” which also received Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle nominations, was expected; it also earned nominations for its score by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul and book by Joseph Robinette. However, “Bring It On” receives its first best musical nomination of the season, ousting the short-lived, though beloved, “Hands on a Hardbody,” which many...

NBC's hit musical drama series Smash had its Season Two premiere last night and new castmember Jeremy Jordan Jimmy Collins has already scored a coup for the show with scoring a slot on the iTunes Top 100 chart with his passionate recording of the original Joe Iconis song 'Broadway, Here I Come'.The full iTunes chart is available here.Unlike the other musical TV series of the moment, Glee, Smash songs have rarely had a prominent place on the iTunes charts, so this early hit portends well for the contemporary original material being created for the show in Season Two by tunesmiths Joe Iconis as well as A Christmas Story and Dogfight composerlyricist team Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. Original material for Bombshell and the other original musicals in Smash beside Hit List is written by Marc Shaiman amp Scott Wittman.

Before I launch into an unqualified rave of this new musical, I have a two-part confession: Somehow I managed to make it to adulthood without seeing the holiday movie that's a December constant.
And, though critics are supposed to be open-minded, I admit that I approached Broadway's Lunt-Fontanne Theatre with some trepidation figuring that this would pre-sell itself and therefore did not have to be all that good.
It has been known to happen with holiday shows, given the built-in audience of people coming to New York to shop and see the tree. Slick producers think they can put anything on the stage and people will come. Add to that how beloved this movie is, and it was inevitable that a production would happen.
So "A Christmas Story, The Musical!" is a delightful surprise. It is terrific fun, sweet without ever condescending, and mines the time in which its set,...

A number of casting and production notices have come up lately and unexpectedly caught my attention. It seems to me, for starters, that a number of these celebrities are coming to Broadway for no other reason than to get themselves a Tony.
First up came the announcement that Renee Zellweger will star in a Broadway-bound adaptation of the 1961 film The Hustler. Though it has not been announced what role Ms. Zellweger will play, the choice to cast her is hard for me to wrap my brain around. To me, what that made the film so memorable were the performances of Paul Newman and Jackie Gleason. They were so strong that I don’t even remember there being a woman in the film other than in the background.
Would Zellweger take on Newman or Gleason’s role? I vaguely remember Piper Laurie playing a bit part in the film,...

Let’s face it: There are a whole lot of new stage productions opening in New York City this fall. Some shows boast legendary veterans like Al Pacino (left) and Sigourney Weaver. Others promise young stars like Jessica Chastain and Jake Gyllenhaal. For still others, the title alone (a 50th anniversary revival of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, anyone?) may be the biggest draw. Here are the 10 that have us most eager to line up for tickets.

Dogfight, an intriguing and occasionally brilliant chamber musical from soulful young composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, is a fascinating paradox — a whole slew of them, really. It’s a period show (set in antediluvian, pre-assassination 1963) with only token nods to period music. It’s an intimate show with moments of attempted cinematic grandeur. It’s a story about the close kinship of cruelty to innocence, and how, ultimately, they annihilate one another, a story with deep violence underneath its soldiers-on-the-town picaresque ... and yet its governing musical mood is a wistful, rippling reflection. It’s brutally honest, yet persistently muted. Dogfight, as tenderly realized by director Joe Mantello, isn’t quite a show for the ages, but it’s a production to remember and celebrate, as well as the announcement of several major talents: its composers, certainly, but also its stars, Derek Klena (Carrie) and Lindsay Mendez (Godspell). The book...

New York — Producers are looking for actors, singers and dancers who stand no more than 4-foot-11 to fill the shoes of Ralphie and his friends as they prepare a musical version of the classic film "A Christmas Story" for Broadway.
Performances begin Nov. 6 in New York with an opening night set for Nov. 19. The musical spent much of last year on a national tour.
The show has more than a dozen catchy songs written by Benj Pasek and composer Justin Paul, with titles including "Red Ryder Carbine Action Bb Gun" and "A Major Award."
Both the 1983 film and musical are based the story of 9-year-old Ralphie Parker's desperate attempt to land an air rifle as a Christmas gift, despite warnings that he'll shoot his eye out.
