Be a dead man and lose his family, or kill his former boss and get his life back. Decisions, decisions.
In the series finale of Hulu’s Culprits, Joe (aka David and Muscle) was stuck between a rock and a hard place. After being ordered by billionaire Vincent Hawkes (Eddie Izzard) — the man the crew stole from who ordered the contract killer — to retrieve the crypto key from Dianne, Joe’s intentions were murky at best. Although he said he was done killing, would he take one more life if it meant protecting his family? According to Dianne, the money...

Culprits is a new heist TV series debuting on Hulu, Disney+, and Star, depending on the territory. The eight-season episode focuses on the life of David, a man living several lives at the same time. Hulu’s Culprits, a dark, violent heist drama, plays like an updated spin on a Guy Ritchie movie that ends up prioritizing a queer family above everything. In a genre that often treats the crew of a heist as a kind of "found family," Culprits never wobbles in its conviction that David (Nathan Stewart-Jarrett) must get back to his family and do whatever he can to keep them safe. The series, from We Care a Lot director J Blakeson, never feels like it's sweating to deliver some kind of progressive message, but in the realm of action-drama, this kind of queer centeredness is a rarity.

Abstract art plays a featured role in the first few episodes of Hulu’s new heist drama Culprits. A Rothko exhibit is the site of an early meeting between two aspiring criminals, and the artist’s canvases are a topic of conversation. A later episode walks through a full room of striking works, a Mondrian here, a Kandinsky there. Nobody discusses the paintings this time, but London is full of places to hold meetings, so this interest on series creator J Blakeson’s part feels more than incidental.
Like many things in Culprits, however, the eye for 20th-century masterworks ends up being more of a red herring than a fascination with substance, a burst of color or geometry to attract the eye more than a point of thematic resonance. Despite a fragmented narrative and a couple of interesting characters, very little in Culprits feels all that modern and nothing so much as flirts with abstraction.

Culprits has an intriguing plot that holds many elements of mystery and thrill together. Directed by J. Blakeson and starring actors like Nathan Stewart, Gemma Arterton, and others, this series can easily be given the position of the director’s magnum opus after steering films like Pitch Perfect, The Disappearance of Alice Creed, and so on. The story builds on the life of Joe Petrus, also known as David, and his past association with the underworld. When his past takes a toll on his picture-perfect present, threatening to ruin it, Joe must take a stand! He makes a vow to make things right for the sake of his family. Will Joe be able to reverse his past mistakes? What are Dianne’s secrets that massacre many people’s lives? We are yet to find the answers to many questions in the first season of Culprits, streaming on Disney+.

It’s 2010, and Gemma Arterton is describing to Empire Magazine having spent an entire day shooting kidnap thriller The Disappearance of Alice Creed in tears. “Your body’s not supposed to cry that much. It is exhausting.” Martin Compston, her co-star in the crying scene, agrees in earnest and the interviewer jokes off-camera, “So what you’re saying is: feel-good hit of the summer?”
Compston laughs, “Yeah, Disney Channel!” and Arterton repeats the gag, shaking her head at its ridiculousness “Disney Channel!”
13 years, a brand shift and a streaming revolution later, and Disney is now the UK home of The Disappearance of Alice Creed. Disney+ is also the UK home of writer-director J Blakeson’s latest collaboration with Arterton: TV thriller Culprits, which is out on Hulu in the US.
That eight-part series is the story of consequences catching up with the diverse crew who pulled off a mega-money heist years earlier.

Exclusive: The first call Stephen Garrett made after acquiring the rights to suspense-fuelled book Culprits: The Heist Was Just the Beginning was to writer and director J Blakeson, who he hailed as “the real deal.”
Blakeson “has seen every crime movie and thriller. You can’t catch him out really,” Garrett pronounced sagely. He was ideal, then, to write and direct the TV adaptation of the multi-layered, heart-stopping anthology, edited by Richard Brewer and Gary Phillips.
The result is Culprits, an eight-part thriller starring Nathan Stewart-Jarrett in a career-changing role, and Gemma Arterton, about the maelstrom that swirls after a gang of ruthless thieves pull off an ingenious heist.
Disney+ streams Culprits in the UK and Ireland on November 8 and in the U.S. on December 8 on Hulu. Garrett is executive producer, as are showrunner, writer and director Blakeson, and Johanna Devereaux. It’s produced by Morenike Williams.

Series creator J Blakeson enjoys heist films but wanted to do something different with the subgenre. The trailer for Hulu’s Culprits shows that he did just that, setting the story years after a heist when the robbers have put their former criminal ways behind them and have established new lives.
“Heists have been done so many times, the great thing about this is that you can sort of play in that sandbox with the tropes and the expectations and the iconography of the heist, but actually tell a story, which is much more about these people who are dealing with this bad thing they’ve done and the consequences of their actions and trying to escape who they were and are trying to become a person who they’d like to be,” said Blakeson in an interview with Variety.

Exclusive: Nautilus, the UK live-action Captain Nemo series commissioned by Disney+ two years ago, is no longer headed to the streamer, Deadline has learned.
The decision is part of Disney’s streaming content removal plan unveiled in May, for which the company is taking an impairment charge of approximately $1.5 billion-$1.8 billion. It followed the February announcement by Disney that it intends to cut $3 billion in non-sports content spend across the company.
As part of the cost-reduction strategy, Disney’s streaming platforms, particularly flagship Disney+, have been taking a closer look on their programming with a new emphasis on content curation.
As Deadline reported exclusively Saturday, Disney+ also is not going forward with another upcoming original series, the The Spiderwick Chronicles, a U.S. live-action series adaptation of the popular children’s fantasy books.

Back then, no one was expecting The Descent to go on and become one of the most widely acclaimed horror films of the decade. Even today, Neil Marshall’s second creature-feature (the first being Dog Soldiers) remains a favorite among audiences and critics everywhere. This iconic film defies those expectations based on its cast and pitch — not a man in sight as six women battle a clan of cave-dwelling monsters — and then delivers a thoughtful study of friendships, grief, and survival.
So when a sequel was announced, fans’ curiosity and anticipation turned into nervousness once it was revealed that Marshall was neither directing nor writing the follow-up. Instead, the first film’s editor, Jon Harris, was promoted to director, and the script was handled by James McCarthy, J Blakeson, and James Watkins. Other details about The Descent Part 2 were scant prior to its 2009 release, but after it was finally seen,...

To play the best paramedic in Los Angeles, Ambulance star Eiza González knew that she needed to go above and beyond to prepare for the role. So the actor not only got to know various medical professionals prior to shooting Michael Bay’s latest action thriller, but she also rented an out-of-service ambulance so she could get overly familiar with her character’s second home. At the beginning of the film, González’s Cam Thompson gets caught up in a bank robbery gone awry as two adoptive brothers, played by Jake Gyllenhaal and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, hijack her ambulance and hold her and her patient hostage. The rub is that her patient is an LAPD officer (Jackson White) who was wounded during the bank robbery, and Cam has to keep him alive during the high-speed chase that ensues.

2Nd Update: Jay Baker, the longtime CAA lit agent who was let go by the agency yesterday for sending a shocking clip from the film Menace 2 Society to manager Jewerl Keats Ross, has responded to the controversy. Basically, he has fallen on his sword and owned his actions.
“I deeply regret my actions and the pain I have caused Jewerl Ross,” Baker told Deadline in a statement. “I have apologized to him, and I also want to apologize to anyone else whom my behavior has offended. I have no excuse and I take full responsibility. I am a work in progress and I’ve embarked on a journey to fully understand what it means to be truly anti-racist. I promise that my actions going forward will reflect that learning.”

Perhaps, in a post-Trump presidency world it is a good time to ask “What is the American dream?”
In I Care A Lot it is cheating, lying, being a lion not a lamb. Playing by the rules is for suckers. This is a tale as black as a Blood Simple or any of the other early Cohen efforts. There is little day light in this murky tale.
Rosamund Pike’s character Marla is a woman of singular vision. She wants to be extremely rich. To this end she willing is to exploit whoever she might need to in order to become one of the elite that gets to make the rules. Marla has created a legal maze of sealed mirrors. She entraps the elderly under her...

Exclusive: Four-time Oscar nominee Annette Bening (The Kids Are All Right) is set to star in Oscar-winning duo Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin’s (Free Solo) narrative directorial debut Nyad.
Heralding from The Imitation Game outfit Black Bear and American Sniper producer Mad Chance, the hot package has come together during the virtual EFM, where CAA Media Finance is currently shopping it to domestic buyers and STXinternational is handling foreign rights.
The project is based on Diana Nyad’s best-selling autobiography Find A Way, which follows the remarkable true story of the swimmer who, at age 64, assisted by her best friend and crew of 35 dedicated supporters, defied the odds to become the first person to complete the 110-mile journey from Cuba to Florida, through poisonous jellyfish and shark-infested waters.
Screenplay comes from Emmy-winner Ann Biderman (Ray Donovan) with a rewrite from Julia Cox (Do No Harm). The aim is to start production this summer.

Sophisticated, bold, flashy and a bit of a shark is how costume designer Deb Newhall describes Rosamund Pike’s character Marla Grayson in the Netflix dark comedy “I Care a Lot.”
On Sunday, Pike won a Golden Globe in the best actress comedy or musical category — beating out expected frontrunner Maria Bakalova — and the film remains in Netflix’s top five as audiences continue to discuss the plot and its lead character.
Marla (Pike) is a grifter who chases her dream by taking advantage of wealthy elderly people and assuming control over their finances. She’s constantly looking for her next mark.
Newhall began thinking up Marla’s looks by pulling images together for her mood board. “I kept thinking everything was going to be dark and sharp on her, like a blade as she slices through the scene,” Newhall says. When she showed the images to director J Blakeson,...
