After the massive critical and commercial success of “A Silent Voice” (2016), it seemed like director Naoko Yamada could do no wrong and was poised for huge things. It may have been strange for some then that her next directorial project would be tied to the “Sound! Euphonium” anime series, which Yamada had previously worked on as series unit director under Tatsuya Ishihara. It could almost be seen as a regression, as Yamada's first two features, “K-on! The Movie” (2011) and “Tamako Love Story” (2014), were also based on pre-existing anime series. Yet whether a fan of “Sound! Euphonium” or not, “Liz and the Blue Bird” (2018) is a constant delight and could well be Yamada's masterpiece.

If you’re looking for a music-themed manga and anime series, Sound! Euphonium is one of the best series you’ll find. Written by Ayano Takeda and illustrated by Nikki Asada, the novel series was originally published from 2013 to 2019 and consists of 13 volumes. The series became enormously popular and has also been adapted into anime format, with two proper anime seasons, several Ova episodes, and several anime films. Back in 2019, a new anime project was announced, focusing on Kumiko’s third year in school, and it was later confirmed to be a proper Season 3 of the series.
In the third season, Kumiko has become the leader of her high school band and now has to find her way around this new role as a new transfer student, Mayu Kuroe, who is also a euphonium player, arrives at the school. The official synopsis for the series reveals the following:

Move on over North Uji High cause a new batch of third years are ready for their turn in the spotlight (and hopefully nationals!). Kyoto Animation’s Sound! Euphonium anime series revealed today that both True and the Kitauji Quartet will be bringing their tunes back to the franchise for the opening and ending theme songs respectively. True, who has performed every opening theme song for the series thus, will be singing “ReCoda.” The singer said that for the song, she chose not to look to the past but rather “created a song for those of us who live in the present.” The ending theme will once again be performed by the voice acting unit Kitauji Quartet singing “Onshoku no Kanata.” Related: Sound! A flaw with the Haruhi Suzumiya series lies in its massive fantastical elements. The stories could get really grand, insane and the characters just had to roll with whatever was thrown their way. The animated series never had a sense of real dramatic pay-off. Don’t get me wrong, the storylines are fun to watch but those moments of drama when they did happen captured human emotion brilliantly and you can’t help but wish for more of it. Well, that’s what the movie taps into and excels in turning a story known largely for its comedy into something much more grounded.
The premise of the movie is self-explanatory given what the title is. Haruhi disappears. Literally, Kyon wakes up on a cold December...
