The already vibrant Nigerian movie industry is getting a further boost with the launch of a new production company and, with it, a new 3 million film fund.
Labari Africa Productions has been launched by director Femi D. Ogunsanwo and financial sector execs Tunde Leye and Adedayo Amzat, the three having previously partnered on Nollywood romantic comedy Finding Hubby and its sequel Finding Hubby 2, both directed by Ogunsanwo.
The banner’s 3 million fund is aimed at a slate of Nollywood features while also supporting local filmmakers to develop and produce new films, providing mentorship and on-set training opportunity for emerging talent and supporting distribution and marketing efforts. Labari Africa claims that it’s the first in a series of funds to be raised in the coming years.

We’ve all seen movies — like “Beirut,” with Jon Hamm — in which a trouble-shooting agent or foreign correspondent has to make his way through a scavenger nation that’s a nest of danger and instability and corruption. “Nigerian Prince” is one of those movies, except that the central character is no spy. He’s a surly American teenager named Eze (Antonio J. Bell), who arrives in the sprawling Nigerian capital of Lagos to spend four weeks with his aunt. Or so he thinks. His mother flew him over there so he could soak up his Nigerian heritage, which sounds innocent enough, until you learn that she canceled his return ticket the moment he arrived. Eze isn’t just visiting — he’s trapped. In a place with spotty electricity, hamburgers that taste like dog food, and people you can’t trust.

"Anyone can fall for scams..." Vertical Entertainment has debuted the official trailer for an indie drama titled Nigerian Prince, which first premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year. Made by a New York-based Nigerian-American filmmaker, the film tells the story of a Nigerian-American teenager who is sent back to Nigeria indefinitely by his mother. There he joins forces with a dangerous internet scammer in order to figure out how to return to the United States. Antonio J Bell stars as Eze, along with Chinaza Uche, Tina Mba, Bimbo Manuel, Ebbe Bassey, Rita Edward, Craig Stott, Dean Cameron, Omar Maskati, and Russell G. Jones. This looks like it gets extra violent and way more intensely thrilling than it seems at the start. I'm definitely curious about this, looks like a well-made indie film. Take a look below. Here's the first official trailer for Faraday Okoro's Nigerian Prince, direct...

Nigerian Prince Review Nigerian Prince (2018) Film Review from the 17th Annual Tribeca Film Festival, a movie directed by Faraday Okoro, and starring Antonio J Bell, Chinaza Uche, Tina Mba, Bimbo Manuel, and Craig Stott. Yes, we’ve all been made aware – either as stern warning or meme parody – of the titular scam; but scamming has become such a universally reviled criminal corner, that [...]
