“The thing that pulled me the most is the authenticity with which the writer Susie Hinton explores what it feels like to be a teenager,” reflects Danya Taymor on what resonates with her about the 1967 novel “The Outsiders.” The popular book was adapted for the screen by Francis Ford Coppola in 1983 and has now come to the stage as a musical. The director finds the original work so powerful because the novelist was able to capture the experience of adolescence “without pulling any punches, without trying to sugarcoat it in a way that dove into my heart and talked to the 14-year-old inside me.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
“The Outsiders” features a large and young cast of performers, many of whom are making their Broadway debuts. “To do ‘The Outsiders’ asks so much of their spirit, their bodies, their minds, and it’s been a privilege to be their leader,...

The young adult novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton has captivated readers for decades, and the 1983 film adaptation, filled with rising stars, further cemented its place in popular culture. Now, a new musical adaptation at the Jacobs Theater on Broadway seeks to tap into the timeless story’s magic.
The musical, directed by Danya Taymor, possesses undeniable heart and soul, but it occasionally falls short of a truly theatrical experience. Although the plot of The Outsiders is rich in dramatic events—a clash between rival gangs, a star-crossed romance, and a climactic confrontation—the stage adaption can easily be compared to other classic stage productions, particularly Grease and West Side Story.
The script, written by Adam Rapp and Justin Levine, focuses on three orphaned brothers: Ponyboy, portrayed by Brody Grant as the narrator; the brawny and romantic Sodapop, played by Jason Schmidt; and the eldest brother, Darrel, portrayed by Brent Comer as the father figure.

P. Diddy has won a lot of hearts with his music, true, but the controversy surrounding him as of late seems to have reduced his respect in the entertainment industry to a considerable extent. And among the multiple other celebrities who took a subtle dig at him following this heap of controversy, singer-songwriter Kesha seems to have joined the ensemble.

However, her dig wasn’t as subtle as the rest of the celebrities. Kesha send a message to Sean “Diddy” Combs during a Coachella performance.
The singer was a surprise guest during Reneé Rapp’s Coachella set Sunday afternoon.
She hit the stage to perform her 2009 breakout hit, “Tik Tok.” But she changed the first line to: “Wake up in the morning like fuck P. Diddy.” In the video posted online, she also can be seen putting up her middle finger, as did Rapp and another musician in the band.
The original lyric to the song is: “Wake up in the morning feeling like P. Diddy.” The rapper-turned-mogul also contributed to the song, saying “Hey, what’s up girl?” in response to that lyric. (The second line of the song is “Grab my glasses, I’m out the door, I’m gonna hit this city,” to which he replies, “Let’s go.”)

Reneé Rapp debuted at Coachella on Sunday afternoon and was joined by Kesha on the stage.
Kesha performed her song “Tik Tok” and made a slight change to the lyrics.
Instead of singing, “Wake up in the morning feelin’ like P. Diddy,” Kesha and Rapp sang, “Wake up in the morning like F*** P. Diddy.”
The change in the lyric comes as Sean Combs faces sexual assault allegations and is accused of sex trafficking.
Rapp took the stage at the Outdoor Theatre at the Music and Arts festival, where she had kind words to say about Kesha.
“Ladies and gentlemen, this, I think, is the hottest person on the earth. Everybody put your fucking hands together for Kesha,” Rapp said, introducing her colleague.

“Juvenile Delinquents Turn Heroes,” proclaims a newspaper headline in S.E. Hinton’s 1967 novel The Outsiders, which was famously adapted for the screen in 1983 by Francis Ford Coppola. And the juvenile delinquents on stage at the Bernard J. Jacobs Theatre are doing the same, rescuing a Broadway season overstuffed with undercooked musicals in an unexpectedly persuasive new adaptation of Hinton’s scrappy, moving story.
This show follows close on the heels of two other book-to-movie-to-musical adaptations, The Notebook and Water for Elephants. But The Outsiders far outstrips them both in the sophisticated storytelling of Adam Rapp and Justine Levine’s book, the adventurous staging of director Danya Taymor, and the dramatically specific and potent score from Levine and folk duo Jamestown Revival. Put another way, The Outsiders is, at last, a darn good musical.

Star Trek: Discovery, now in its fifth and final season (with new episodes dropping Thursdays), has one of the best—if not the best—couples of the long-running franchise in Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) and Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz). For Stamets, this final season is really about his legacy—especially upon learning that the spore drive program is being shuttered. Now that the U.S.S. Discovery crew has a new mission, “it’s his entire driving force,” Rapp tells TV Insider. “It’s a major crossroads moment and anytime any human being has a crossroads moment when he finds this new path, it’s like, all in. Not that long ago, a dark thriller featuring Kevin Spacey as a smooth-talking stranger who arrives in a small town with an apparent vendetta against one of its inhabitants might have been a major movie event. He was, after all, a hugely popular and critically acclaimed actor, known for playing iconic villains from The Usual Suspects and Seven all the way up through House of Cards. His gift for intimate, Shakespearean malice could certainly boost a box-office haul.

Reneé Rapp is running late. Blame it on Beyoncé.
“I’ve had the greatest morning of my life. I’m gassed. Beyoncé sent me flowers today,” says Rapp, her mouth wide open, still in shock. The gift arrived at her hotel room in Amsterdam, the fourth stop of her first European tour, four days after the 24-year-old performer covered Queen Bey’s country-tinged “Daddy Lessons” at her Feb. 13 show in Paris, where Rapp also acknowledged that Black artists created country music.
“I’ve never been speechless in my life. It’s literally going to make me cry,” says Rapp. “She is everything — and the reason that I know how to sing. I would sit down and listen to her different tonalities and phonics and phrasing styles and be like, ‘Please, Jesus, let me be able to do this.’ ”

2004's "Mean Girls" has become a seminal classic of teen girl cinema, with Rachel McAdams' Regina George, Lacey Chabert's Gretchen Weiners, Amanda Seyfried's Karen Smith, and Lindsay Lohan's Cady Heron just as culturally important (and quotable) as say, Matthew Broderick in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off." A time capsule of early aughts fashion and sensibilities, "Mean Girls" is a cultural touchstone and arguably the last time a teen movie crossed over into mainstream popularity without being a part of a massive franchise like "Twilight" or "The Hunger Games" (or a slasher film). Simply put, "Mean Girls" is now woven into the fabric of American pop culture.
The film helped solidify Lohan's place as one of Hollywood's "it girls," and her off-set antics became just as talked about as whatever film she had out in theaters. So much so, that even the insulting nickname "fire crotch" for her made...

One Regina George passed the baton to another on the January 20 episode of NBC’s Saturday Night Live. Rachel McAdams, who played the queen-bee character in the 2004 movie Mean Girls, made a surprise appearance midway through Saturday night’s SNL to introduce a performance by singer Reneé Rapp, who took on the role of Regina for the new Mean Girls movie musical. And midway through Rapp’s performance of her Mean Girls song “Not My Fault,” an oversized cake prop on stage rotated to reveal Megan Thee Stallion, Rapp’s collaborator on the track. “It’s funny how the mean girl open all the doors / I been told y’all, I’m the Black Regina George,” Megan rapped during her verses of the track. Even better, all three Reginas recreated the Spider-Man Pointing at Spider-Man meme on SNL’s Studio 8H set. renee rapp, megan thee stallion and rachel mcadams...

Reneé Rapp debuted on Saturday Night Live with a performance of “Snow Angel,” the title track from her first studio album, which came out last August.
Rapp spoke with Rolling Stone about the production of Snow Angel in an in-depth interview last summer, and has also explained the traumatic experience that inspired the song she performed Saturday.
Later in the show, Rapp returned with Megan Thee Stallion to perform “Not My Fault,” which the duo wrote for Mean Girls.

Actress Rachel McAdams, who is known for the 2004 film ‘Mean Girls’, appeared on the latest episode of “Saturday Night Live” to introduce musical guest Renee Rapp. In the 2024 musical remake of the movie, Rapp portrays Regina. The introduction, met with very loud applause, was followed by Rapp’s performance of ‘Not My Fault’, reports Variety.
The actress wrote the song for the film and was joined on stage by Megan Thee Stallion.
In the sketch following the performance, McAdams returned, portraying Natalie Partman, an actor who struggled to land any roles because she looked too much like Rachel McAdams.
As per Variety, the actress hasn’t been part of the recent ‘Mean Girls’ events, making the surprise appearance all the more exciting.
The original film also starred Lindsay Lohan, Amanda Seyfried and Lacey Chabert, and the three recently reunited for a Walmart commercial. Additionally, Lohan appeared at the New York...

Renée Rapp’s second Saturday Night Live musical performance of the night was full of surprises.
Audiences finally got to see the original Regina George anoint the new guard when Rachel McAdams introduced the singer, who played Regina on Broadway and reprised the role in Paramount’s new musical film.
Rapp sang “Not My Fault,” a song she collaborated with Megan Thee Stallion on for the film’s soundtrack. So, naturally, Meg had to make an appearance as well.
Rapp made her SNL musical guest debut this weekend. Megan Thee Stallion previously pulled double duty as both host and musical guest in October 2022.
McAdams, who has surprisingly never hosted SNL, also stuck around for a skit with host Jacob Elordi. In the skit, Adams played an aspiring actor who looks a lot like beloved actress Rachel McAdams. Elordi plays a very famous and pretentious actor imparting some words of wisdom on the group.

Saturday Night Live kicked off the first show of 2024 with James Austin Johnson’s Donald Trump talking to the press about what’s in store for him this year: an election and court trials.
While speaking from a New York courtroom on Saturday’s episode, Austin’s Trump said during the cold open, “2024 is going to be a very exciting year. I’m either going to jail, be president, or frankly, The Purge. Perhaps all three,” referencing The Purge film franchise where all crimes are legal for 12 consecutive hours each year.
Austin’s Trump also brought up the former president’s latest win at Iowa Republican presidential caucuses. “We just got back from Iowa where we won very big, very big in Iowa,” he said. “I want to congratulate Mr. [Ron] DeSantis on a truly embarrassing showing. He went to 99 counties but bitch couldn’t win one.”

Like everyone else, the Saturday Night Live writers were wondering what was said between Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner at the Golden Globes.
They took the opportunity to crack that code during Saturday’s episode, during a fake awards season Entertainment Tonight segment with host Jacob Elordi and Bowen Yang posing as professional lip readers to help dissect some viral moments.
“His body language says he’s relaxed and a little horny,” posits Elordi of the clip of Jenner and Chalamet, with Yang adding: “The movement of her mouth will say that she’s talking.”
“Your mom is so nice…it’s crazy that she was married to Kanye,” Yang says, imitating Chalamet. As Jenner, Elordi responds, “Wait, do you think Kim is my mom?”
That wasn’t the only viral moment the pair lent their skills to. They also took a shot at translating a viral video of Taylor Swift...

“Saturday Night Live” is back for the first time in 2024. The Jan. 20 episode marked the first of the new year, with host Jacob Elordi and musical guest Reneé Rapp. Upon announcing the popular guests, NBC almost immediately began selling merch for the episode, anticipating just how popular the two are.
During Elordi’s opening monologue, he first mentioned “Saltburn,” the current buzzy movie that made headlines for its graphic sex scenes. “You might know me from ‘Saltburn.’ Not from seeing the film, just from seeing the TikToks,” he began, cutting to a scene when his co-star, Barry Keoghan, has sex with a grave. “I was the one in the grave. If you saw the movie, thank you. If you saw the movie with your parents, I’m sorry. If you saw the movie with your girlfriend, you’re welcome.”

Jacob Elordi is bringing the “babygirl” energy to “Saturday Night Live” this week when he hosts NBC’s late night sketch comedy series for the first time. In his “SNL” promo video for the January 20 episode (watch above), Elordi seems confused when musical guest Reneé Rapp and cast member Bowen Yang initially refer to him as the term. Well, according to Urban Dictionary, “babygirl” is used for “grown fictional men who have the fandom in a loving chokehold” — so it’s a good thing!
The 26-year-old Australian actor hit it big with roles in “The Kissing Booth” and “Euphoria,” but it’s his appearance in the psycho-sexual “Saltburn” that put him on the awards radar with a pair of BAFTA nominations for Best Supporting Actor and for Rising Star. Elordi plays Felix Catton in the Emerald Fennell thriller, a spoiled college student who becomes the object of Oliver Quick’s (Barry Keoghan) obsession.

Bisexual panic is seeing Reneé Rapp and Jacob Elordi teasing their appearances on Saturday Night Live. Together.
On Thursday, SNL dropped its weekly teasers for this Saturday’s show, which will see Elordi as host and Rapp as musical guest. The video features the two stars alongside Bowen Yang cracking jokes about the Saltburn star being so babygirl.
“Reneé, you were so right, he is so babygirl,” joked Bowen Yang with a smirk. To which Rapp replied, “He’s so baby girl.”
“Me? I’m a baby girl?” asked Elordi.

The Mean Girls remake—this time with showtunes—was a big win for Paramount Pictures over a long holiday weekend in the States. A film originally pegged and budgeted for Paramount+ until someone realized folks still love the 2004 classic (shocker!), this economical redo of the Lindsay Lohan touchstone galloped to an impressive $33.2 million across its first four days. That matches practically all of its reported $36 million budget right out of the starting gate.
So the movie studio has reasons to pop champagne this week (and maybe send a few bottles over to Reneé Rapp for her diva turn as Gen Z’s very own Regina George). Nonetheless, even audiences who enjoyed what was a pretty down-the-middle reworking of a 20-year-old staple had to be a little peeved by how some fellow moviegoers reacted. Because, speaking purely anecdotally, it seemed like a lot of folks were put off by the whole...

Lindsay Lohan was fetch long before fetch was a thing. So, it should come as no surprise that Paramount paid the actor handsomely to cameo in the new “Mean Girls.”
Sources say Lohan, who became one of young Hollywood’s biggest stars after starring in the 2004 film of the same name, pulled down about $500,000 for a half a day of work in the latest incarnation, a musical that stars a new clique of Plastics led by Angourie Rice and Reneé Rapp. Paramount declined comment. A rep for Lohan declined a request for comment.
Lohan’s surprise entrance in the new film, written by Tina Fey, drew thunderous applause at the New York premiere on Jan. 8. In her scene, Lohan returns to the math competition that served as the denouement of the original, and offers a full-circle moment for the “Mean Girls” franchise, which also spawned a Broadway musical. Drew Barrymore praised “Mean Girls” star Reneé Rapp on Friday’s episode of “The Drew Barrymore Show” for protecting her from an alleged stalker.
The cast of “Mean Girls” joined Barrymore on her eponymous talk show to discuss the movie musical. At one point, the daytime host pulled Rapp into a hug and thanked her for escorting her offstage when an alleged stalker approached them during a speaking event last year.
“You and I, by the way, you’re my protector,” Barrymore said. “Reneé and I had an incident recently where this guy came to attack me on a stage that I was [on] with Reneé, and she mama-beared out and protected me so well.”
Back in August 2023, Barrymore was interviewing Rapp at the 92nd Street Y in New York City about the actor-singer’s debut album “Snow Angel,” when an audience member interrupted the discussion and yelled, “Drew Barrymore!”

It’s a badge of honor for a movie to be made into a stage musical. It’s an even bigger badge of honor for that musical to be adapted back into a movie of its own. But here we are – 20 years after Mean Girls hit theaters and six years after the show hit Broadway, Mean Girls the musical is now a movie.
Mean Girls is about a teenager named Cady Heron (Angourie Rice) who, until now, has been homeschooled by her mother while Mom does research in Africa. Cady finally gets a chance to attend a regular high school, and it goes about as well as one would expect. To put it plainly, Cady is socially awkward.

Review: For those that weren’t there, it’s hard to describe just how massive Mean Girls was in the mid-2000s. It essentially changed the way high schoolers were represented in movies. I’m not usually a fan of these types of films yet Mean Girls has always stood out as a witty and clever comedy that is honestly pretty funny. But my enjoyment of the film didn’t go past that. The musical stage play or book that followed also received acclaim, though I’m not familiar with either. I simply went into this expecting a Mean Girls musical and that’s exactly what I got.

We don’t really need a reboot of Mean Girls, or indeed a film adaptation of the stage musical. But there you go, we are where we are. And that’s 2024, 20 years after the release of the seminal high school movie starring Lindsay Lohan which was based on the non-fiction book Queen Bees and Wannabes by Rosalind Wiseman. Fashions have changed, social media is now ubiquitous, but teenage girls are still cliquey and judgey so the story hasn’t required a massive update. Perhaps that’s to its detriment, because this movie, directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr., is really an example of pop culture eating itself. The musical came because people liked the film. Now the new film exists, presumably for people who like the musical, while not having the unique selling point of it being on the stage. But if you can get over the audacity...

The very first shot of the 2024 musical reimagining of "Mean Girls" is a vertical frame. Two characters, Janis (played by Auli'i Cravalho) and Damian (Jaquel Spivey), film themselves singing a song that sets the stage for the story to follow. They're troubadours for the TikTok set - and this is a "Mean Girls" for a new generation.
