Juan Pablo Di Pace and Cheryl Burke received the first perfect score of the season on “Dancing with the Stars” for their sizzling samba. Is he the favorite to win now? Hard to say. There’s still lots of weeks of dancing left, and there are a bunch of formidable contenders, like DeMarcus Ware, Tinashe and Milo Manheim. Plus, getting the first perfect score of the season isn’t a ticket to the Mirrorball trophy.
In the last 26 seasons, only 11 couples who earned the first perfect score of the season — a 30 or a 40, depending on the judging panel — went on to win the whole show. Five of them ended up in second place, and there were a few shocking eliminations in there, specifically Sabrina Bryan, who nabbed the first 30 twice, in Season 5 and the all-stars outing, only to be eliminated early — and five years to the day exactly.

Adam Rippon won the special four-week, all-athletes season of “Dancing with the Stars” on May 21, which made him the 11th sports star to claim the Mirror Ball Trophy. But is he the best athlete who has ever won? Yes, according to the readers who responded to our poll, but another figure-skating Olympian was right behind him.
A quarter of our readers (25%) thought Rippon was the best ever, and it was certainly a decisive victory on the dance floor. He topped the judges’ leaderboard every single week of the shortened season, even in the season finale after his unconventional freestyle routine left Carrie Ann Inaba and Len Goodman scratching their heads.
Figure skaters come to the ballroom with an advantage since their sport already trains them in choreography and musical interpretation, and if you can do it while balancing on the narrow blade of an ice skate, you can do it in dancing shoes.

Tonya Harding would probably tell you herself she’s the underdog in the “Dancing with the Stars: Athletes” final three. No one, not even she, thought she’d get this far. Our odds have her finishing in third, behind Josh Norman and frontrunner Adam Rippon, which would be a very good and respectable placement for someone many thought would and wanted to get the boot in the first episode. But could she actually go even further and claim the Mirrorball trophy? “Dancing” history shows that, more often than not, the final two tends to be a his-and-her battle.
In the show’s previous 25 seasons, 17 final twos have come down to a female and a male celebrity. The longest streak was eight seasons, from Season 5 through 12. Of these 17, the woman prevailed 10 times. While each season is a very specific case, this data isn’t that shocking; female dancers — whether the pro...

“Dancing with the Stars” has had nine athlete runners-up and will add a 10th after this all-athletes season. Of those first nine, 34 percent of our readers voted in a recent poll that Shawn Johnson should’ve definitely won Season 15 with Derek Hough.
Johnson and Hough came in second to Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovolani on the all-stars season. The Olympic gymnast won Season 8 with Mark Ballas and was seeking to becoming the first celebrity to win two Mirroball trophies. Both couples received high marks throughout the season, but perhaps Johnson’s previous win (as well as Hough’s three wins) hurt them in the fan votes.
Twenty-five percent of our readers feel that James Hinchcliffe and Sharna Burgess were robbed of a win on Season 23. The IndyCar driver lost to Olympic gymnast Laurie Hernandez and Val Chmerkovskiy, who dominated the season.

According to our early “Dancing with the Stars” racetrack odds for its special athletes-only 26th season, Adam Rippon is the man to beat. The 28-year-old figure skater is coming off of an Olympic Games where he won a bronze medal in the figure skating team event with his American teammates (including his “DWTS” rival Mirai Nagasu). His career has also included a 2010 Four Continents championship and a 2016 Us nationals championship. Will he add a Mirror Ball Trophy to his list of accomplishments?
Pros:
Figure skaters are an especially good fit for “DWTS” as they come to the dance floor with plenty of advanced physical training and experience with choreography, music and performing for a live audience. And of course they know what it takes to please a panel of judges. That undoubtedly helped two past figure skaters win the show: Kristi Yamaguchi (season 6) and Meryl Davis (season 18).

“Dancing with the Stars” just announced on April 13 the 10 athletes who will compete in its special shortened “Athletes” season, and already our users think they know who will win. Though no one has set foot in the ballroom yet, figure skate Adam Rippon is the front-runner to claim the Mirror Ball Trophy with leading odds of 17/10 as of this writing. Do you agree?
Those odds are based on the predictions of Gold Derby users who have entered their picks in our predictions center thus far. But how could there already be such a strong consensus around a contestant when no one has danced yet? Well, just look at the history of the competition. Two figure skaters have won the Mirror Ball in seasons past: Kristi Yamaguchi (season 6) and Meryl Davis (season 18). And it’s easy to see why. Figure skaters are athletically trained, and their sport gives them plenty of...

Seven sports are represented by the 10 athletes on “Dancing with the Stars: Athletes,” including some of the show’s staples. But which sport’s athletes have done the best on the show? You can probably guess. Let’s look at these seven sports’ “Dancing” histories.
Football (Josh Norman)
As everyone knows, football is by far “Dancing”’s favorite sport. They don’t even try to hide it. Nineteen football players have hoofed it before this season, and while they haven’t all made it to the business end of their respective seasons, football has produced four winners, three runner-ups and two third-place finishers. So, no pressure, Josh, to follow in these pigskin players’ footsteps.

The 10 contestants for “Dancing with the Stars: Athletes” were announced live on Friday, April 13, on “Good Morning America.” The 26th season of ABC’s long-running dance competition series drew all of its celebrities from the world of sports, from football to figure skating. The four-week event starts on Monday, April 30. Scroll down for the full list of competitors along with the pro dancers they will be paired with.
Going into Friday morning’s announcement we already knew of four Olympians who would be competing for the Mirror Ball Trophy. Two of those come from the world of figure skating, a sport that has produced past winners Kristi Yamaguchi (season 6) and Meryl Davis (season 18) as well as runner-up Evan Lysacek (season 10). One is Adam Rippon, who won a bronze medal in the team event at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang and stole the show both on and off the ice with his effusive personality.

‘Dancing with the Stars’ has seen 10 athletes lift the Mirrorball trophy and almost nearly as many athletes came thisclose to getting their hands on it. Nine athletes have finished in second place on the show — some of them even losing to fellow athletes. Some of these losses were expected, some were close calls, but which of these runners-up deserved the win the most?
Jerry Rice was the first athlete runner-up. The three-time Super Bowl champ and Anna Trebunskaya lost to Drew Lachey and Cheryl Burke in Season 2. Rice and Trebunskaya had the third lowest score of the final three on finale night, but beat third-place finishers Stacy Keibler and Tony Dovolani with fan votes added in.

Figure skater Mirai Nagasu became the first American woman to land a triple axel at the Olympics, where she helped the Us team win a bronze medal. Now she’s campaigning for a spot on “Dancing with the Stars,” which is airing a special all-athletes season later this spring. But maybe she should be joined by the first American woman to land a triple axel in any competition: Tonya Harding. Of course, Harding had a much more controversial career on the ice, but “DWTS” has never shied away from controversial contestants, and with Harding’s return to notoriety this year thanks to the Oscar nominated biopic “I, Tonya,” she’s exactly the kind of contestant the dancing competition would court (there have already been rumors swirling). Do you think they should? Scroll down to vote in our poll at the bottom of this post.

Paging “Dancing with the Stars”: Call Mirai Nagasu right now for your all-athletes season. The figure skater, who became the first American woman — and third woman overall — to land a triple axel at the Olympics on Sunday, has her sights set on the ABC dancing competition when she’s done in Pyeongchang.
“I’m definitely going to be plugging myself here,” Nagasu tells Yahoo!, “but some athletes get to make their debut on ‘Dancing with the Stars,’ and so I’m hoping my personality will win me a spot on that show.”
Nagasu, who joined Japan’s Midori Ito (1992) and Mao Asada (2010 and 2014) as the only women to land the three-and-a-half rotation jump on Olympic ice, already has a “Dancing” partner in mind: Mark Ballas, who won the Mirror Ball trophy with Olympic gold medalist Kristi Yamaguchi 10 years ago on Season 6. The 2018 Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang, South Korea officially begin with the opening ceremony on Friday night, February 8, launching two weeks of competition that will showcase the world’s best skaters, skiers, snowboarders, hockey players and more. But of course the most important question is, how well can they cha cha?
“Dancing with the Stars” returns on April 30 for its 26th season, but it will be an irregular competition in more ways than one. First, the season will last only 4 weeks, far shorter than the 10 to 12 weeks we usually get. Second, the season will consist entirely of athletes, which means the show will be well positioned to recruit some Olympians fresh off their glorious victories — or perhaps their tragic defeats. And this wouldn’t be the first time. Ice dancers Meryl Davis and Charlie White both competed on “DWTS” (season 18) immediately after winning gold medals in the 2014 Winter Olympics in...

President Obama scolds Congress over shutdown, more fan made Wonder Woman, Robert Downey, Jr.’s six foot tall flying Iron Man
Four time Olympian skier Bode Miller isn’t happy with Russia’s anti-gay laws. “My main emotion when I hear and deal with situations like that is embarrassment. As a human being, I think it is embarrassing.” He also thinks it’s unfair that athletes are told they can’t have opinions and views on the subject. “There are politics in sport and athletics. They always are intertwined, even though people try to keep them separate. Asking an athlete to go somewhere and compete and be a representative of that philosophy and all the different crap that kind of goes along with it and then telling them they can’t tell them they express their views or they can’t say what they believe is pretty hypocritical and unfair.

The first elimination night of this season's "Dancing With the Stars" was a dramatic one.In a shocking turn of events, the bottom 2 celebrities -- "Real Housewives" star Lisa Vanderpump and boxer Victor Ortiz -- were spared after another star withdrew due to injury.1976 Olympic figure skating champion Dorothy Hamill announced she was leaving upon her doctor's recommendation. "I've taken the advice of my spine surgeon and I need to withdraw from the competition," the 56-year-old said. "I have an injury that could be irreparable and nerve damage and it would be completely unfair for me to stay in this and have any of these people go home."Dorothy's partner, Tristan MacManus, agreed with her decision. "It's a decision that has to be made," the pro dancer said. "I'm certainly not frustrated at her, I'm frustrated with her. There's something a lot bigger going on than this competition."Figure skaters...

To be honest, I almost forgot that we're supposed to be in a "girls' season" of American Idol. The boys sorta stepped up last week, and I got all the Anthony Perkins/Evan Lysacek realness I needed from Paul Jolley (who will so, so be eliminated if he keeps playing this "country ballads only" game like it's season four or something). But hey, look: These girls almost All awesome! We've got some countrified mademoiselles, a couple of grudge-bearing belters, a discolored weirdo named Kezban, and one total disaster named Zoanette who keeps Muppet-belching her way to the Top 20. Riveting stuff.
Here's the supercut of last night's "Girls' Hollywood week" highlights. Let's inspect it minute by minute and talk about all the ferocious femmes we're torqued about -- and also the disasters that no one seems to acknowledge.

How scary. Olympic skiier Lindsey Vonn was rushed to the hospital in Austria on Feb. 5 after a horrific crash.

Dancing With the Stars has never been my bag, but the reality juggernaut boasts three big perks: 1) Tom Bergeron is and always has been an exceptional host, and it's nice to see the veteran of Hollywood Squares and the cult FX talk show Breakfast Time helm a hit series with Emmy-winning flair; 2) Carrie Ann Inaba is a great judge; 3) Excepting So You Think You Can Dance, Dancing With the Stars has given us the hottest men in reality TV history. The constant shirtlessness is a big help.
Since the show just wrapped its all-star season with an all-female Final 3, let's reorient ourselves with a look back at the movers and shakers we care most about: the sweaty, sweaty dudes.

It's the last dance for "Dancing With the Stars" pros Anna Trebunskaya and Jonathan Roberts: The pair are divorcing after nine years of marriage, People reports.
"We have enjoyed more than a decade of a very loving, loyal and happy relationship, but after much soul searching, we have decided to end our marriage," the couple said in a statement. "We are committed to staying friends and dance partners. We have immense respect for each other as people and performers."
Trebunskaya, partnered with former boy bander Drew Lachey, on the current All-Stars edition of ABC's reality competition, were eliminated Oct. 9. Trebunskaya has competed in the past 14 seasons of "DWTS"; Roberts participated in seven of the first nine seasons, coming in third place in Season 5 with Marie Osmond. Neither Roberts nor Trebunskaya, who twice came in second place with partners Jerry Rice and Evan Lysacek, have won the coveted mirror-ball trophy.

Evan Lysacek still finds the ice pretty nice. The U.S. figure skater announced on Friday that he is not only coming out of retirement, but is planning to compete at the 2014 Winter Olympics in the Russian city of Sochi as well. "I'm officially coming back to competition," Lysacek said on Friday's Today show. Ryan Lochte's been lobbying for a spot on Dancing With the Stars, and sure — he seems like a good choice to shimmy around and delight the grandmas of America. Plus, Olympians love DWtS: Apollo Anton Ohno, Kristi Yamaguchi, Shawn Johnson, Evan Lysacek, Hope Solo, Maurice Green, Natalie Coughlin, and Misty May-Treanor have all done the show. But why stop there, when there are so many other ways to be on TV? Lochte's just one of many, many athletes coming out of London with buzz and fame that can only mean one thing: reality television. Here, we help these budding entertainers leave the dignity of sport for the degradation of having to do "confessionals."Oscar Pistorius Should Be The Bachelor Especially now that Lochte says he's not interested. "Dancing with the Stars" may have just found its next contestant with Olympian Michael Phelps.
Competitor Ryan Lochte has floated the idea of competing on "Dancing with the Stars" with Phelps to continue the friendly competition and media attention. In an interview with Us Weekly, Phelps did not shoot down the possibility of going on the reality show now that he is retired.
"I haven't really been known for my dancing. I know everyone who's done it - I've talked to [speed skater Apolo Anton Ohno] and [swimmer Natalie Coughlin] about it, and they said they've enjoyed it and had a blast. I won't say I'm ruling anything out, who knows?"
If he could pick any partner, regardless of their pro or celebrity status, Phelps would choose Coughlin, saying, "She's gone through it all before and Natalie and I have been on a lot of teams together. She literally couldn't stop talking about how much fun the show was.

American gymnast Aly Raisman earned a gold medal for her athletic prowess in London. It's her mom who's gone viral.
NBC's video of Lynn Raisman watching her daughter perform on the uneven bars Sunday, with her nervous murmurs and face and body contortions, was the single most replayed moment on Tivo digital video recorders that night. It has even inspired a YouTube spoof.
The network doesn't have "parent cams" trained on the stands during every Olympic event. Moms and dads are featured only when they are relevant to the story lines, veteran NBC producer Molly Solomon said Thursday. But they've already been indelible parts of the network's coverage in the first few days of the London Games.
The parents of American gymnasts John Orozco and Dannel Leyva were palpable presences during that sport's coverage. The bronze medal-winning Leyva's dad was his coach and a bundle of energy. NBC introduced Orozco's...

Wedding dress designer Vera Wang and Olympic Champion Figure Skater Evan Lysacek are living together, according to a new report in 'New York Daily News.' Evan Lysacek, 27, reportedly moved into Vera Wang's Beverly Hills Mansion in June 2012, after she gave him the opportunity "to stay there for a while," a source says. The same source says there is "something going on," while another insider comments that Vera, 63, is "just enamored with him and enjoys his company." The second insider commented that they do not think there is a sexual relationship between the duo. The two have had a professional relationship for years, with Vera designing many of Evan's most famous costumes, including for the 2010 Olympics, where he won the gold medal. Santa Monica, Calif. — A hungry Chris O'Donnell arrived straight from the set of "NCIS: Los Angeles" and polished off a piece of pizza. Joe Mantegna, Dennis Farina and Roger Ebert's wife were craving their favorite Chicago foods, too.
Chicago Cubs owner Tom Ricketts felt right at home, with "Mr. Cub" Ernie Banks resting on a stool and Harry Carey's widow Dutchie standing at the bar.
There was a Midwest feeling in the air Monday night, even if everyone was almost 2,000 miles from the Second City. It was the 25th Windy City West bash, bringing together expatriate Chicagoans from film, television and sports for a taste of home on the West Coast.
"It's unlike any other Hollywood party. People are actually looking each other in the eye and talking," said O'Donnell, who grew up in the Chicago suburb of Winnetka. "There's nobody looking over anyone's shoulder. That's the difference.
