Sleepaway Camp by Bj and Harmony Colangelo is Now Available: "Initially considered "just another slasher film" during its 1983 release, Sleepaway Camp has since emerged as a cult classic due to its talented young cast, remarkable practical effects, and notorious ending. But although the queer themes explored in its memorable final moments were initially intended to shock and unsettle audiences, Sleepaway Camp's empathetic portrayal of its unlikely killer sets it apart from other "trans panic" films of its time.
Together, Bj & Harmony Colangelo assess where Sleepaway Camp falls in the slasher canon and do a deep dive on the film's themes and legacy, exploring how changing attitudes towards the LGBT community has led to both a reclamation and necessary critique of the film by modern audiences.
Sleepaway Camp's divisive reputation has inspired a decades-long debate that changes alongside the attitudes and culture of its viewers. Through historical context, personal memoir,...

The slasher boom of the 1980s was a wild time, where filmmakers were attempting to capitalize off of the popularity of films like John Carpenter's "Halloween" and Sean S. Cunningham's "Friday the 13th," while also trying not to appear like a cheap rip-off of either title. This led to success stories like the "Child's Play/Chucky" franchise, or colossal failures like "Boggy Creek II: And the Legend Continues." And then there are films like 1983's "Sleepaway Camp," a slasher film viewed as a classic by some and unforgivable schlock by others. There are five (you read that right) films in the series, but none have been able to capture the magic or reputation of the first one. Introducing scream queen Felissa Rose in her very first feature, "Sleepaway Camp" is a notorious bit of '80s camp (literal and metaphorical) known for casting actual teenagers to play the campers.

Camp hasn’t always been kind to Angela Baker, but that doesn’t keep her from trying to enjoy all it has to offer, whether it’s at Camp Arawak, Camp Rolling Hills, or in the case of Sleepaway Camp III: Teenage Wasteland, Camp New Horizons. The third entry in the Sleepaway Camp franchise, Teenage Wasteland mixes up the franchise’s killer summer camp formula and features Pamela Springsteen further embracing her role as Angela Baker, who just wants to camp until she dies… and will kill anybody who gets in the way of her ultimate goal.
Since her stint as a camp counselor didn’t go exactly as planned last summer (unless drowning someone in an outhouse was on the itinerary), Angela decides to return to her roots as a camper in Teenage Wasteland, taking on the identity of another camper unfortunate enough to cross paths with Angela and...
