Ryan Gosling's most frequent co-star isn't Emma Stone. It's Los Angeles.
Over the past 10 years, Gosling has starred in seven movies where Los Angeles not only serves as the setting, but as a character. And he's the first to admit that the sunny, messy, dynamic sprawl is one of the keys to his storytelling.
"'L.A. worships everything and values nothing.' That was something my lady said to me one day, and I thought it was so funny I asked her if I could put it in the movie," Gosling told Et's Denny Directo during the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, where he was promoting 2016's La La Land. (The lady in question, of course, is Gosling's longtime partner Eva Mendes, although this being L.A., we do love the noirish connotations of him not identifying her by name.) When I first saw The Untouchables as a teenager, I had never heard of Sergei Eisenstein or the Odessa Steps sequence that Brian De Palma masterfully cannibalized for the film's Union Station set-piece shootout. I knew serious actors sometimes transformed their bodies for a part, but never realized — until reading that Robert De Niro wore silk boxers to help identify with Al Capone — the lengths some went with preparations the audience would never see. And I'd never heard of its screenwriter, David Mamet, whose voice I'd soon encounter in both the plays others turned into movies (Glengarry Glen...

Former White House photographer Pete Souza has a new president in his portfolio—Frank Underwood.
Souza, who gained acclaim (and a book deal) for his eight years’ of intimate photos of President Obama and his family, was on assignment this week with House of Cards, shooting “A Day in the Life of Frank Underwood” in Washington, D.C.
Souza trailed after actors Kevin Spacey and Michael Kelly as the pair, in character as President Underwood and White House chief of staff Doug Stamper, rode a presidential-looking limo—and also a most un-presidential Metro subway train—to some of the capital city’s iconic hot spots.

I was a teenager when I first saw Blade Runner and I was completely blown away by it. I freakin' loved that film! However, with the cast of the 1982 sci-fi noir film first watched the film, they sat in a confused silence.
During an interview with THR, actor M. Emmet Walsh, who played Lapd captain Bryant in the story, talked about his experience after the first viewing of the film. After the movie ended the cast didn't really know what to say. He described it as a "Homer audience". Apparently, director Ridley Scott was the only person who got it. This is what Walsh said while laughing:
"We all sat there and it ended. And nothing. We didn't know what to say or to think or do! We didn't know what in the hell we had done! The only one who seemed to get it was Ridley."

Tess Holliday and nine other women took a stand for body diversity at Union train station in Toronto, Canada, where they stripped down to their bras and jeans, holding signs encouraging people to take photos and share them on social media to start a conversation about body acceptance.
“Today something amazing happened & I got to share it with these amazing women,” Holliday, 31, wrote on Instagram Wednesday. “Yes for body diversity. Yes to walking through Union Station in just your bra & jeans. Yes to us embracing our bodies at all stages.”
One sign said, “Share this to break the stigma #IWontCompromise.

Following a divisive and bitter election, crowds began to descend on Washington, D.C., in the early morning hours Friday to witness the inauguration of Donald Trump as the 45th president of the United States — some for different reasons than others.
Excited groups bustled atop the brick sidewalks of Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, toward their metro stop to head into the nation’s capital in the pre-dawn hours. Passengers played “guess where I’m from” with strangers from around the country. Two Texas women played matchmaker for their absent adult children, trading photos, contact information and pinky-swears to keep secret their plot.

When it comes to telekinesis and gory visual effects, the movie that generally springs to mind is David Cronenberg’s 1981 exploding head opus, Scanners. But years before that, American director Brian De Palma was liberally dowsing the screen with claret in his 1976 adaptation of Carrie - still rightly regarded as one of the best Stephen King adaptations made so far. A less widely remembered supernatural film from De Palma came two years after: De Palma’s supernatural thriller, The Fury.
The Fury was made with a more generous budget than Carrie, had a starrier cast (Kirk Douglas in the lead, John Cassavetes playing the villain), and it even did pretty well in financial terms. Yet The Fury had the misfortune of being caught in a kind of pincer movement between Carrie,...

Composer Bear McCreary says, “I've always adored superheroes and their musical fanfares”, adding, “Collaborating with Marvel, Joss Whedon and his creative team is truly a dream come true. Together, we craft a score each week that I hope measures up to the insanely high standards of Marvel fans around the world.”
The prolific composer's addition to the Whedonverse with Marvel's Agents of Shield was hailed by fans. Yet when the show premiered, to the surprise of many the score itself seemed understated, especially in comparison to more bombastic superhero themes, and especially in light of McCreary's memorably eclectic, unconventional score for Joss Whedon's favourite show, the rebooted Battlestar Galactica. (Not to mention the fact that 'Bear' is an awesome name, so it seems almost a waste for him to write anything less than bombastic.)
Perhaps there's a parallel to be drawn between the music and the (generally) non-superpowered characters.

I saw the news surface that Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio would be reteaming on an adaptation of Erik Larson's "The Devil in the White City" and I initially thought it was old news. I mean, DiCaprio has been attached to this project since 2010, but this is the first time Scorsese's name has been attached. In fact, the likes of David Fincher and Kathryn Bigelow were unable to get this one off the ground and even as recently as last December, Oscar-winning screenwriter Graham Moore (The Imitation Game) mentioned his draft in an interview with me. Yet, that's another difference between this announcement and previous ones. amz asin="B000FC0ZIA" size="small"Scorsese and DiCaprio won't be working from Moore's draft as they've brought Billy Ray (Captain Phillips) in to write the screenplay, which tells the story of H.H. Holmes, a serial killer in Chicago, set against...

Platform Nine and Three-Quarters may very well exist at Boston's South Station or Chicago's Union Station. J.K. Rowling sent fans into a tizzy this past weekend when she hinted at her ideas for an American Hogwarts. The beloved author, 49, teased the concept of a stateside school of magic when discussing the upcoming Harry Potter spinoff, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. In addition to Potter's famed academy of Hogwarts, Rowling previously broached schools in France and Germany, called Beauxbatons Academy of Magic and Durmstrang Institute [...]...

The Los Angeles Film Festival is celebrating its 21st year and bringing free screenings, in addition to a great indie film slate, to West Coast cinephiles. Kicking off the freebies is the family-friendly “Who Framed Roger Rabbit,” the 1988 classic period detective-animated slapstick mashup starring Bob Hoskins, set for June 12 at 8 p.m. at Union Station. Also, celebrating its 15-year anniversary with a June 13 screening at DIGat7th is Gina Prince-Bythewood’s on-court romance “Love & Basketball,” starring Omar Epps and Sanaa Lathan as best friends whose shared love for the titular sport parallels their love for each other. Prince-Bythewood will attend along with her cast, which includes Lathan, Regina Hall, Gabrielle Union, Alfre Woodard, Debi Morgan, and others. June 13 will also feature Coffee Talks, a popular series where audience members get a first-hand look as filmmakers and other industry vets discuss their crafts. For two long (sometimes really long) years, there’s been one nagging question of concern about The Blacklist: just what is the deal with Raymond Reddington and Elizabeth Keen? From the criminal and cop dichotomy, to the are they or aren’t they father/daughter relationship, it always seemed like they were made for each other, like peanut butter and jam. And now, at the end of the second season of The Blacklist, it turns out that they truly are peas in a pod. The finale firmly answered the question of Red’s potential paternity to Liz, and it set up a fascinating new dynamic for next season that will likely see Liz becoming more like Red in a way she never thought she would.
As per usual with The Blacklist, we had to swim though an awful lot of bull crap to get there, starting with Liz’s...

As if it weren’t enough that Liz has spent the last two years living a Truman Show existence — Your marriage is a lie! Your childhood memories have been blocked! Everyone else knows more about your life than you do! — our protagonist started the Season 2 finale with the new knowledge...

So much is happening on "The Blacklist," and by "so much," we definitely mean that a) Raymond Reddington literally refuses to stop wearing a fedora no matter how much we complain, and b) there's a creepy political sector in the U.S. government (headed up by The Director) and they want to start another world war. The only people who can stop these well-dressed haters? Red and Elizabeth, obviously!
The Director Stages A Terrorist Attack, Remains Creepy and Evil While Doing So
Ugh, The Director. This nefarious power-player decided to start this week's episode with a casual terrorist attack, but the catch? He hires a creepy Russian assassin named Karakurt so the USofA will blame Moscow, which means war is imminent. Naturally, everyone's favorite father-daughter(ish) duo, Red and Elizabeth, join forces to find Karakurt -- with the help of their buddies at the FBI task force.
Here's the deal:...

Russell Crowe may have been not so assured of victory if George Clooney had been on the other end of the arena. Clooney—clad in a pretty short battle tunic and gladiator sandals and carrying a very big gold sword—couldn't help but stick out at Los Angeles' Union Station today while shooting the Coen brothers' latest twisted comedy, Hail, Caesar!, about a 1950s-era Hollywood fixer who's called upon to keep the movie stars on what appears to be a Roman-era period piece in line. Nice legs, George! Moreover, Clooney once again has that Caesar haircut that once was so popular among hunky types in the 1990. We knew if we just waited long enough... Hillary Clinton was approached by a young girl named Macy Friday in Denver on Monday and likely wasn't very prepared for the 10-year-old's reaction. While shaking the former first lady's hand, Macy looked back at her family with a look on her face that seemed like the perfect combination of shock, elation, and disbelief; for what it's worth, Hillary appeared equally surprised as she tried to hold onto her cup of coffee. Later, she stopped to snap a photo with Macy, her younger brother Finn, and their parents, who traveled to Denver from their home in Cincinnati. Hillary had the pleasure of meeting her young fan as she campaigned for Us Senator Mark Udall during a stop in the newly renovated Union Station in Denver. She appeared at an event to raise money for Udall's current reelection campaign and then headed to Las Vegas for another appearance that night before popping up in San Francisco,...

(Cbr) Spoiler Warning: This article contains major spoilers for the freshly aired "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." first season finale, "Beginning of the End," and the show up to this point as a whole. "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." has reached the finish line for its first season -- and, following last week's renewal news, it's more like a victory lap. Not that Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg's) team look entirely like winners at the outcome of the season finale, "Beginning of the End." Sure, the forces of evil led by a supercharged (and superbly unhinged) John Garrett (Bill Paxton) have been defeated, thanks in part to the intercession of a newly thinking-for-himself Deathlok (J. Ward Kimball might be the most important name in animation you've never heard: one of Disney's first animators, he worked on the dwarfs for “Snow White,” designed Jiminy Cricket for “Pinocchio” and redesigned Mickey himself in the '50s. Later he became a member of the “Nine Old Men” who advised and counseled Walt and the Disney company for decades. All that, and he mentored Brad Bird, Pixar's presiding genius and one of the most important figures in animation today.Kimball had hobbies too, though, and one of them was trains: he was fascinated by railways and collected railway memorabilia (Kimball is part of the reason Disneyland features lots of train-related attractions). So it's hardly surprising that when Los Angeles' Union Station, the last of the great, palatial American train stations opened in 1939 just down the road from Disney, he was there with a camera, shooting the only known footage of the opening.
