His Highness Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, UAE Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, and His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, Minister of Tolerance, United Arab Emirates, opened the tenth annual Global Citizen Forum to hundreds of international delegates, with an agenda focused on impactful climate change action.
In partnership with the Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (Raktda), and Rak Properties, the Global Citizen Forum’s second instalment in the ‘Butterfly Effect’ trilogy, Earth Age, opened its doors on Wednesday 6th December. Anticipation had long been building as people witnessed the giant white dome installed on the beach to serve as the main stage for the Forum. The first day focused on experiences that brought the concept of global citizenship to life, with a charity gala and dinner bringing the night to a close. On Thursday, October 20 the U.S. Fund for Unicef presented Sting and Unicef UK Ambassador Trudie Styler with its annual Children’s Champion Award.
This year’s award recipients were honored for their commitment to improving children’s lives and the environment. The evening’s celebration was a fundraising event co-chaired by Alli and Bill Achtmeyer, Barrie and Kevin Landry, and Elaine and Bobby Sager that brought in a record $1.15 million for Unicef’s global child survival programs.
Sting and Styler, a UK Unicef Ambassador since 2004, strive to make a difference for children around the world and protect the environment through numerous public efforts. From raising funds and awareness for the Unicef End Child Exploitation and United Against AIDS campaigns to visiting tsunami-affected Sri Lanka in solidarity with those affected by the devastating disaster, Styler has been a leading voice on behalf of some of the poorest and most vulnerable children on earth.

On 8 June 2010, just three days before the 2010 World Cup began in South Africa, an international partnership made a compelling case for soccer as an agent of social change. International philanthropist and entrepreneur Bobby Sager and his friend Sting rolled out their newest project, Hope is a Game-Changer, which will commence delivery of 10,000 indestructible soccer balls to six countries in Africa combined with the start of Grassroot Soccer’s (Grs) campaign to reach 1 million youth by the start of the World Cup in 2014.
Fittingly, the event was also a graduation celebration for 110 at-risk girls who have completed the Grs Skillz Street curriculum and held at the Football for Hope Centre, Khayelitsha, Cape Town. Ethan Zohn, the American soccer commentator, Survivor winner and co-founder of Grs who has very recently won a battle with Hodgkins disease, also attended the celebration.

Last week Sting and his wife, Trudie Styler, hosted a concert at Carnegie Hall to benefit the Rainforest Fund, the nonprofit they founded in 1989 to promote the conservation of the planet’s tropical forests. I found my way over to him to ask about his work, and then squeezed in a couple of questions about the World Cup. “Well, you know, England plays the United States in their first game,” Sting said. “It’s a difficult game. I think America has nothing to lose and England, they have to win.” Sting knows a thing or two about soccer. He grew up playing the game as a child in northern England, and now he’s teamed up...
