Fans of the Power franchise are losing Ghost again — but this time, it’s the series.
Starz has canceled Power Book II: Ghost, with the show’s fourth season to serve as its last. It will be broken into two parts, premiering June 7 and September 6. Watch the teaser above.
The move was prefaced by Starz CEO Jeffrey Hirsch this week when he revealed plans to contain content costs by developing more new shows versus sustaining series longer as they become more expensive.
Using the Power franchise as an example, he said: “You look at the [Power] map and say, ‘Ok, if I take one of those characters out and spin one of those out, I can bring that on to replace the Power show at half the cost.’ Now I’m putting a lot of money right to the bottom line. And I’m really not losing anything in terms of acquisition costs and subscriber viewership,...

Ghost and Tommy are getting their own “Power” origins story. As Starz continues to span the “Power” universe into multiple series, the network is ready to announce the official fourth spinoff. The network confirmed Wednesday that it is developing the “Power” prequel series “Origins,” which will follow the beginning story of characters Ghost and Tommy, played in the original “Power” by Omari Hardwick and Joseph Sikora.
Sascha Penn (“Power Book III: Raising Kanan”) will serve as the executive producer for “Origins,” which comes from Lionsgate TV. (It’s unclear whether it will actually be called “Power Book V: Origins.”)
The first “Power,” which debuted in 2014, starred Hardwick as James St. Patrick, a nightlife entrepreneur who is also a massively successful cocaine distributor known on the streets as “Ghost.” He rules that empore alongside his childhood friend Tommy, played by Sikora.

Starz is expanding the Power Universe again with a prequel spinoff series that will reunite Ghost and Tommy.
In the vein of Power Book III: Raising Kanan, which follows the youthful years of everyone’s favorite foe, Kanan Stark (played by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson), the new series Origin will follow the early years of the beloved duo of Ghost and Tommy’s (played by Omari Hardwick and Joseph Sikora in the Og series).
Fans of Raising Kanan have been asking for seasons when Ghost and Tommy would run into Kanan since the teens met in high school, yet those characters had never been cast. With Starz set to become a pure play standalone public company by year end, CEO Jeff Hirsch is out talking up its strong points and how it competes in a crowded streaming landscape — price increases, bundling, and most importantly, he said, containing content costs with a slate of new shows in development as later season series get costly.
“When seasons go from one to two to three to four [seasons], three to four is where the cost really pops because most of the actors get bigger raises, and you have to really manage that. So, you have to have in your portfolio of development shows that can actually replace shows as they get into later seasons,” he said at a Deutsche Bank media conference today, providing one of the most blunt assessments of a practice introduced by Netflix and embraced by other streamers where shows produced under the Cost Plus model...

Despite there being far too many firsts still left to achieve, Black creators have indelibly left their mark on the television landscape for decades.
Just think of names like Shonda Rhimes (“Grey’s Anatomy”), Lee Daniels (“Empire”), and Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”), whose series went on to become credited for reviving network television, or writers like Issa Rae (“Insecure”), Donald Glover (“Atlanta”), and Lena Waithe (“The Chi”), who have been able to build their own sort of TV empire with the shows they have written and/or produced.
Even networks like BET, Starz, and MTV still run off of the creative ingenuity of executive producers like Tyler Perry (“Sistas”), Courtney A. Kemp (“Power”), Mona Scott-Young (“Love and Hip Hop”), and even RuPaul (“RuPaul’s Drag Race”).
Often when retelling the story of Black representation on television, there is first acknowledgment of how the writers rooms initially were not reflective of what their casts looked like.

50 Cent made as big of a splash in the television industry as he did with music thanks to his Power franchise. But the television series he had planned after Power might surprise some fans.
50 Cent had his sights set on making his own superhero show 50 Cent | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
50 Cent spent years planning to enter the space of television before finally making his move with Power. The hip-hop mogul teamed with producer Courtney Kemp to bring the series to life, which drew inspiration from his own background. His networking with a well-known Hollywood producer also helped put the wheels in motion for the show.
Power grew to be the Starz network’s flagship show, spawning an entire cinematic universe in its own right. But after the success of Power, 50 Cent considered taking over the world of superheroes as well. According to Entertainment Weekly, he’d even given his new show a title.

50 Cent became as successful of a producer as he was a rapper thanks to creating the Power universe. But initially, being a producer proved to be a bit less lucrative than his other business endeavors.

Power has become the Starz network’s biggest program, and has spawned a successful franchise. Since the conclusion of the original, the series has since spun-off into several other popular movies, expanding its lore. 50 Cent originated the idea after his connections got him in a room with television producer Courtney Kemp.
“This project actually started in the Soho House with me and Mark Canton. Mark is an actual producer of 300,” he once told Vibe. “He’s brought you so many hits I can run through a line…Bad Boys, The Bone Collector, Krush Groove, the Prince movies, Purple Rain…...

The entertainment law firm of Gendler & Kelly has changed its name as of today to Gendler, Kelly & Cunningham, reflecting the elevation of partner Sarah Cunningham.
Cunningham joined the firm in 2018 and was promoted to partner in 2021. The etching of her name on the firm’s door comes as recognition of her contributions to the respected boutique outfit founded in 1996 by Michael Gendler and Kevin Kelly.
Cunningham “has represented the firm’s clients with an intelligence, diligence, creativity and insight rarely found in one lawyer,” Gendler said. “Her ability to navigate complex deals, coupled with her sensitivity to our clients’ diverse interests and career goals, are a tremendous asset to our firm. In 2021, we made the easy decision to ask Sarah to become the firm’s first new partner in our 26-year history. Power Book IV: Force has been renewed for a third season at Starz.
Season 2 of the third spinoff in the Power franchise followed Tommy Egan (Joseph Sikora), who was on a mission to avenge the death of Liliana, and with the Flynn organization weakened, he’s more determined than ever to take over the Chicago drug world. But with Cbi split down the middle, Tommy and Diamond first must maintain their edge over Jenard. As their factions feud in the streets, Tommy capitalizes on another rivalry between the Serbs and Miguel Garcia, the most formidable drug lord in Chicago.
After setting off a chain reaction of violence in pursuit of his ambition, Tommy must race to stay ahead of the men who are coming for what’s theirs, a federal task force that’s closing ranks, and a sadistic supplier with a direct line to the Cartel. All the while...

Alarmed by the Israel-Hamas war and a rising tide of hate directed at Jews, prominent entertainment industry creatives and executives have formed a nonprofit organization devoted to combatting antisemitism.
The Entertainment Alliance to Fight Antisemitism has come together in the past few weeks following the Oct. 7 Hamas terror attacks in Israel and the shocking rise in antisemitic incidents in the U.S. Nearly 2,000 members of the creative community have signed a pledge that condemns discrimination and affirms Israel’s right to exist.
“Just as we have bonded together to fight other forms of hatred and bigotry, we stand united in our pledge to fight antisemitism wherever it appears. We have seen what happens when unbridled Jew-hatred goes unchecked. We pledge to not let that happen on our watch,” the pledge reads in part.
Among the members and organizers of the Eafa are showrunners Howard Gordon and Hank Steinberg and director Kimberly Peirce.

SAG-AFTRA A-lister George Clooney met with his union’s leaders Tuesday in a bid to further understand how contract negotiations broke down on Oct. 11.
Clooney spoke with union national executive director and chief negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland as well as president Fran Drescher over Zoom about why studios suspended discussions the previous week. Deadline, which was the first to report the news, additionally reported that fellow union members Scarlett Johansson, Emma Stone, Ben Affleck and Tyler Perry were present in the meeting.
Said a SAG-AFTRA spokesperson on Tuesday, “We meet with members of all profiles every day and we won’t be commenting on those private conversations.” Representatives for Clooney did not respond to a request for comment.
On Oct. 11, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers announced that studios were pausing discussions because “the gap between the AMPTP and SAG-AFTRA is too great, and conversations are no longer moving us in a productive direction.

On Saturday, Sept. 23, Disney CEO Bob Iger was in Beverly Hills, seemingly living his best life. He was at dinner with Paul McCartney and Eagles alum Joe Walsh at La Dolce Vita, an Old World Italian restaurant with long white tablecloths and dark red leather booths. Some people were discreetly snapping photos, as was to be expected with a Beatle in the house.
But not everyone was focused only on McCartney. By the time the dinner was over, blurry images of Iger at the table with McCartney had been posted in the WhatsApp group chat that includes nearly 500 showrunners. Then someone posted an image of a “Writers’ Tears” whiskey bottle (yes, a real brand), suggesting that it should be sent to Iger’s table. No one did that, but the table did receive a round of shots with a note reading, “Expectantly, from the showrunners of Hollywood.”
