Exclusive: We hear that Film Bridge International will be handling the international and domestic rights to the Milo Gibson-Laurence Fishburne sports drama Brother’s Keeper. Deadline first told you about the project coming together in August 2018 from Minneapolis-based upstart production company Winsterstate Entertainment.
Brother’s Keeper follows the true story of West Texas’ ’09 Abilene High School football team — underdogs who rally against the odds to form a family and win their state championship. Todd Randall directed the movie, which was adapted from the book of the same name by Al Pickett and Chad Mitchell. The producers are Hamid and Camille Torabpour, Dr. Mark Smith and Stelio Savante. The movie wrapped its principal shoot before the Covid-19 pandemic and has been in post-production, with current below-the-line post crew observing social distancing protocols. After a so-so revival last year when ABC took over “American Idol,” most fans are in agreement that the talent on display on Season 17 is a giant leap for singing kind. The show overall seems to be more entertaining. Yes, judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan are never going to be as scathingly funny as Simon Cowell in his snide heyday. But their personalities and musical knowledge complement each other and all three seem quite genuine in their quest to help the contestants to up their games.
Very early in this current edition of the show, the words “best season ever” were uttered. It is all subjective, of course, but with just one more episode and the three-hour finale left, No. 17 could go down in “Idol’ ‘history talent-wise once a winner is crowned. Of course, factoring into that assessment will be the winner’s post-show success as well.

"American Idol" finalist Bucky Covington has teamed with Shooter Jennings (son of country music legend Waylon Jennings) for "Drinking Side of Country," a single that will be on Bucky's upcoming album "Good Guys," due out Sept. 11, 2012.
For the music video, Bucky and Shooter took a page out of Waylon's book and did "Dukes of Hazzard" theme -- Waylon was the man behind the show's theme song and also the original narrator of the series.
They also enlisted "Idol" finalist Kellie Pickler to don her best shorty-shorts and step into the high heels of Ms. Daisy Duke. Check out the video above.
And also check out Bucky's favorite charity, Help the Good Guys. There’s this weird part of the week — from Friday morning till Monday evening — when not a single major TV network airs a reality singing competition. It’s terrible, I know, but it also gives me a lot of time to ponder American Idol history. (Everyone does this in their free time, yes?) And my latest flight of Idol fancy got me mulling this question: Was Season 11′s Top 10 the strongest — top to bottom — in show history? Let’s examine:
For starters, I’d automatically rule out the five seasons with three or more Top 10 contestants who probably wouldn’t have outlasted Season 11′s No.

Last month, while interviewing executive producer Nigel Lythgoe for a story about possible changes to American Idol for its upcoming eleventh season, I proposed the idea that the show should introduce a list of 11 songs that would be banned from the live performance rounds on the grounds that they’ve been done to death in previous seasons. Lythgoe’s response caught me off guard: “Well, Mike, if you want to write down and send me 11 songs that you don’t want to hear again, I will put them through to the committee.”
Well, sir, you don’t have to ask me twice!

Former American Idol contestant Bucky Covington has been cleared of a theft charge. Concert promoter William Fuller filed a complaint against Covington over a financial dispute at a June 30 concert in Florida, according to Cmt. Fuller hired Covington to perform Ormond Beach's Iron Horse Saloon, but the promoter was forced to leave the event due to a medical emergency. Fuller claimed that Covington and two associates used his absence to steal $$1,500 (£925) from the Iron Horse Saloon's cash box. The Florida State Attorney General launched an inquiry into the matter, (more)...

One "American Idol" alum is facing bizarre allegation. It was uncovered recently that a promoter has filed a police report against Bucky Covington, accusing him of stealing $1,500. The country singer, who finished eighth on season 5 of the talent show, however denied the insinuation.
According to TMZ, the 33-year-old singer was hired to perform at the Iron Horse Saloon in Ormond Beach, Florida on June 30 for a July 4 Nascar race week celebration. But, when the promoter was rushed to a nearby hospital due to chest pains, he allegedly told his brother and his brother's wife to pocket money from the cash register.
It was further claimed that Bucky and his gang refused to give back the money they were accused of stealing. While an investigation is ongoing, the "Gotta Be Somebody" singer insisted on his innocence. In his response to the allegation, he told TMZ, "I'm just glad I'm big enough to be on TMZ!

The news of Pia “I Got Voted Off ‘Idol’ Way Early And All I Got Was This Awesome Record Deal” Toscano joining Interscope’s roster surprised no one, except maybe my cat Moo Shu. (Homegirl’s a Voice fan. She thinks Idol is so seven years ago.) Toscano already shattered records by being the lowest-placing Idol also-ran to nab a significant major label deal in the show’s ten year history. (She was ninth! Ninth, I say!)
While we wait to see whether Pia becomes the next Jennifer Hudson or Kristy Lee Cook, let’s look back at the careers of previous ninth-place finishers to see how they’ve fared.
Season One: Jim Verraros
Jim was our inaugural “token sob story” contestant, and he parlayed his name recognition into movie roles in popular gay indie flicks. (Eating Out 2: Sloppy Seconds might be my fave sequel title since Electric Boogaloo.

American Idol history has proven that there’s one place besides the bottom 3 that you don’t want to be: Scheduled in the first slot on performance nights. Viewers with short-term memories are more likely to forget what the first contestant of the night brought to the table. Plus, as an Idol hopeful, it’s difficult to deliver a show-stopping number when the crowd itself is still warming up. But whereas being first in previous seasons merely meant that you had to cope with another contestant getting the spotlight (and, therefore, momentum going into the next week), the disadvantage this...

Jordin weighs in on who should fill Simon’s throne, talks about her first Broadway role, reveals her Idol crush and reveals whether or not she’s been asked to appear on Glee!
Jordin Sparks, you are one smart cookie! Thanks for offering up the smartest suggestion of a Simon Cowell replacement we’ve heard yet! When we asked who should take over the American Idol judge’s throne, Jordin was quick with her answer: Diddy!
“As far as personality goes, he says what’s on his mind. Simon didn’t want to hurt people’s feelings – it just came off that way,” Idol’s season six winner told HollywoodLife.com exclusively during a phone call June 22. “He’s the best fit! He was great on Making the Band, he’s a producer and he’s been in the industry for a long time. I think he’d probably be the best fit.

While the ostensible point of Wednesday night's "American Idol" finale was to decide the fates of Lee DeWyze and Crystal Bowersox, the evening's spotlight returned again and again to Simon Cowell. Before the acerbic yet somehow lovable British judge left to jumpstart another Fox show, "Idol" celebrated his nine seasons of work with video segments, comedic bits and an appearance by former judge — and frequent Cowell sparring partner — Paula Abdul.
We're gonna miss the guy, with his ludicrously unbuttoned dress shirts and surly witticisms. It's an open question whether the show can survive without him, especially coming off a season that almost everyone can agree was lackluster at best and soul-crushing at worst. We worry about what "Idol" will be like without Cowell there to speak the truth...

As part of the ramp-up to "Idol Gives Back," past "American Idol" contestants are volunteering at food banks around the country.
One of the charities receiving the "Idol Gives Back" aid is Feeding America and in addition to donating money, the past Idols are helping with the Feeding America backpack program.
The idea is that children have food during the week when they are in school, but once the weekend comes around, they might be going hungry. These backpacks are filled with nutritious things like apple juice, tuna, milk, mashed potatoes and spaghetti and meatballs. The kids can pick up the backpacks on Fridays and return them on Mondays, then pick them up again the following Friday and so on. Also included in the backpacks are informational packets about nutritional food.

"American Idol" Season 5 finalist Bucky Covington just released his first single, "A Father's Love," off his sophomore album "I'm Alright," due out later this year.
He talks to Zap2it about his music, still being in touch with his fellow Idols and what he thinks of comparisons between himself and this year's "Idol" finalist Casey James.
Tell us about the new album, "I'm Alright."
One thing I just absolutely love about country music is the variety of it. I have a song on there, "Hold a Woman," that is very soulful, my "sexy side," if you will. Then we've got "Evel Knievel" that is a fist-pumping party song. The title song "I'm Alright" is about how you broke up and then got drunk and then end up showing up on her doorstep to see if she's okay. I absolutely love that song.

Wednesday night's (February 24) "American Idol" was bad. Really bad. Like, makes-you-question-the-meaning-of-life-bad. The debut of season nine's Top 12 boys (no men here) did the impossible: It out-sucked the girls' tepid outing from Tuesday. By a lot. Let's just get to the carnage.
Todrick Hall
Song: "Since U Been Gone" by Kelly Clarkson
Verdict: The Wizard of Odd
Todrick opened the show on an offbeat note by putting Kelly Clarkson's signature anthem in a blender with fuzzed out synths, jangly African guitars, Morris Day R&B, atonal background singers, gospel vocal inflections and a dollop of a spoken word. It was as close to a Dirty Projectors song as we'll ever get on "American Idol." It may have left the judges scratching their heads (Randy used the word "obliterated"), but Pitchfork would give it an 9.2. Personally, I dug it. He may have been trying too hard, but I thought his vocals...

It may have left the judges scratching their heads (Randy used the word "obliterated"), but Pitchfork would give it an 9.2. Personally, I dug it. He may have been trying too hard, but I thought his vocals...

From Frenchie Davis and Corey Clark to Joanna Pacitti, several hopefuls have been yanked from the 'Idol' stage.

Though it's probably no consolation, Chris Golightly has plenty of company in the ranks of "American Idol" hopefuls who've been disqualified from the show after making it through the grueling Hollywood rounds.
Golightly was cryptically Dq'd from the show on Wednesday — despite appearing in the group shot of the top 24 near the show's end — after producers determined that he was "ineligible" to continue in the competition. According to reports, the former foster child was unable to clear up a discrepancy about a former contract and was replaced by floppy-haired Tim Urban at the last minute. No mention was made on the show about the disqualification, nor about the rumored elimination of burly personal trainer Michael Lynche, who appeared to make the top 24 despite reports...

"American Idol" hopeful Angela Martin's mother Viola has gone missing -- one year after her father was killed right before Angela participated in the show's Hollywood Week.
According to a piece by Fox Chicago, Angela Martin's mother Viola had Christmas dinner at their house on Saturday, Dec. 26, then left to drive to her other daughter's house but never arrived.
Viola's car was found Thursday (Dec. 31) near the Chicago suburbs of Riverdale and Dixmoor, which is nowhere near her Saturday destination.
This is Angela's third go-round with "American Idol." She auditioned unsuccessfully for season 7 with Stevie Wonder's "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" and then last season made it to the Hollywood round, which took place shortly after her father was killed. Martin did not advance out of Hollywood.
Angela can be seen in the promos for "American Idol's" ninth season (video below). She told the show last year during the Hollywood...

"American Idol" finalist Bucky Covington gave a nice Christmas present to the Tennessee chapter of the Arthritis Foundation -- a check for $25,000.
Prior to his Dec. 29 concert at the Hard Rock Cafe Nashville, Bucky Covington presented the Arthritis Foundation with the winnings from his appearance on "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader" earlier this year.
Bucky then treated the packed house to performances of "It's Good to Be Us," "I'll Walk" and a new track off his upcoming album "I'm Alright" entitled "Mexicoma." Mmmm, margaritas.
Currently Bucky is on a small tour that includes stops in Winston-Salem, Indianapolis, Baltimore and Birmingham. His album "I'm Alright" drops sometime in early 2010 -- the exact date has yet to be announced.

There were already two "American Idol" videos on the Great American Country's Top 20 Countdown -- now Bucky Covington's "Gotta Be Somebody" has joined the party. Video below.
Bucky Covington's "Gotta Be Somebody" joins Carrie Underwood's "Cowboy Casanova" and Kellie Pickler's "Didn't You Know How Much I Loved You" on the Gac Top 20 Countdown. He comes in at No. 19 on the chart.
"Gotta Be Somebody" was directed by Devin Pense and features live performance video spotlights his hometown community of Rockingham, North Carolina, according to the official "American Idol" website. This is Bucky Covington's country version of the Nickelback #1 hit.
What do we think? Good video? We were always a fan of Bucky's on "Idol." He wasn't super-charismatic but his "Simple Man" and "Real Good Man" were both good that season. He also had a nice solo from a group number on "Tobacco Road" that we remember really liking.

Oh, Chris Sligh. I remember when you first graced my TV screen way back in 2007, a breath of fresh air amongst a crop of season six Idol lookers like Haley Scarnato. Oh, how silly you were, bouncing into that Idol audition room in Birmingham like an ever-huggable Teletubby, spouting off funny-isms like, " to make David Hasselhoff cry." But now, Chris Sligh, you're making me cry. And not in a good way. This past Saturday, you took to your blog to give season 8's top ten Idols some advice following their final tour date. And though you make some valid points throughout your rant (and yes, I will qualify it as a rant), most of your blog post just reeks of arrogance and negativity. So let's take a look, and refute -- and support when necessary -- some of your points, shall we? Note: This blog post was written prior to...

Over the course of eight stupendous seasons, "American Idol" has showcased some of the best undiscovered singers in the country and a few who, well, were probably better left that way.
There have been plenty of highs and just as many lows. So, in celebration of Wednesday night's (May 20) Lambert vs. Allen finale, we're taking a look back at some of those who came before them — and were quickly forgotten. Because while there have been plenty of "Idol" also-rans who were really good, there are just as many who weren't. And really, we'll remember them a lot longer than the talented ones.
So here's a look back at some folks who reached for the stars (even though they probably shouldn't have) and didn't let a little thing...

If tonight's Cma Awards are the main event, last night's Bmi Country Awards were an excellent taste of what to expect. Stars of the genre gathered in Nashville last night to hand out some medals. Nicole and Keith traded off nights being honored and this time it was his turn. Miley Cyrus may not have walked home with a medal, but she did have a trophy on her arm — her man Justin Gaston. The night's big winner was Taylor Swift, who scored country song of the year for "Teardrops on My Guitar." Carrie Underwood decorated her dress with a medal as well, but hopefully got a good night's rest before the big event in a few hours. To see more of Alabama, Billy Ray Cyrus, Brooks & Dunn, Bucky Covington and others just read more.
