A history of the most underrated British science fiction of the 1970s is, largely, just a history of British science fiction of the 1970s. It gets a bad rap. Think “1970s British Sci-Fi” and your mind will be flooded with associations of dodgy special effects, less-than-perfect gender politics, and so much knitwear. That, and a certain time traveller with a predilection for scarves and jelly babies.
But the truth is the 70s was a golden age for British science fiction stories with ideas and ambition, completely unrestrained by any concept of production values. While even the most pedestrian attempt at modern science fiction telly feels it has to go toe to toe with the MCU’s latest CGI eyeball-blaster, a year after Star Wars was on our screens the Doctor was still routinely facing off against dressed like this, and it was better for it.

Gareth Malone hasn't held back in his criticism of Russell Crowe's performance in Les Misérables.
The choirmaster, who fronts The Naked Choir with Gareth Malone, told Alan Carr on Chatty Man that Crowe shouldn't have gone for the part of Javert in the first place.
"Not one of the standout performances, was it?" he said. "I think it is all about context. Why, if you were somebody that doesn't sing, would you put yourself up for a role like that?
"So many people put themselves up for karaoke and choose the wrong songs. If you are in any way connected with singing and somebody goes for one of the Whitneys - you see them on X Factor every week - everyone just goes, 'Oh no'.
"Russell Crowe should have known better. Somebody should have told him. I would have told him. Reality check."
Alan Carr: Chatty Man airs on Channel 4 tonight at 10pm.

We might not have Dancing on Ice anymore, but ITV's hoping to keep us entertained during the winter months with a brand new show! Get Your Act Together sees a whole host of celebrities teaming up with famous variety acts to learn their skills - and then trying to perform them to a live studio audience (who decide whether or not they get through).
The whole extravaganza is being hosted by Stephen Mulhern, so we got him on the phone to chat about acts that struggled, why he's always worried about shows going out, and how the studio audience surprised him...
"If you like Britain's Got Talent then you'll love Get Your Act Together. It's a combination of two things – the basic idea is that it's a speciality act from around the world who will then teach a celebrity what they do. Obviously the pressure is on the celebrity learning it,...

Charlotte Church has joined the cast of an upcoming Dylan Thomas film.
Rhys Ifans leads the cast of Welsh stars in a movie version of Thomas's Under Milk Wood.
Former Labour leader Neil Kinnock and rugby star Gareth Thomas have also joined the cast in guest roles.
Ifans will play the narrator in the film, previously played by Richard Burton in the original radio play and the 1972 version.
Church is to appear as Polly Garter, who is pining for her deceased lover.
The project is being filmed over six weeks in Solva, Pembrokeshire, with villagers to appear as extras.
Director Kevin Allen told BBC News: "We want to veer away from delivering a dull, literal reflection of Thomas's original work, intending instead to explore some of the more erotic, visceral elements of the richly funny, filthily fluid, magical dreamscape - whilst not stooping to mess with Thomas's original text.

Mickey Rourke has displayed his dramatic weight loss as he prepares to play Welsh rugby player Gareth Thomas in an upcoming biopic.
The 61-year-old actor, who is set to reprise his role in Sin City sequel A Dame to Kill For, has reportedly lost over 40lbs to star as the 39-year-old retired sportsman.
Rourke has also written the script for the project, set to be titled The Welshman, which focuses on Thomas's life as the first openly gay professional rugby union player.
Speaking about the movie recently, Rourke explained: "The day I met Gareth Thomas, this man with this secret, this terrible shame, I said to myself that I've also been through hard times. Just like him."
On Thomas's reaction to the script, he added: "I was really nervous asking him to read it, because it's his life story. And because there were others who wanted to make the movie.

Labour MP Gareth Thomas has called for soaps to better represent East Asian communities in Britain.
The MP for Harrow West also urged new Culture Secretary Sajid Javid to make sure the Arts Council and Ofcom do more to promote and monitor the diversity of the shows' employees.
He said that soaps like EastEnders and Coronation Street have "disappointing" records when it comes to casting East Asian characters.
The politician explained: "In nearly 30 years I'm told EastEnders has only ever had one regular East Asian character, a young female DVD seller who lasted just six months.
"Given that the East End of London remains one of our most ethnically diverse areas, it's a little odd that Albert Square hasn't had so much as even the proverbial clichéd Chinese takeaway.
"Coronation Street has a similarly disappointing record, waiting until 2011 before an East Asian character appeared there - again they lasted just four months.

James Franco wasn’t a big fan of Michael Fassbender’s Shame. “He wasn’t such an addict in my opinion, though. I mean, what did he do? Watch porn and screw a handful of people a week? I could point to quite a few folks who do that. And that scene where he’s at his lowest point and wants to fuck and goes into a gay club, and it’s depicted like the seventh level of hell… I mean, it goes back to the horrible representations of gays in the 70s, where the gay club is meant to signify everything dark and depraved. A planned Blake's 7 remake will not air on Microsoft's Xbox Live, a new report has claimed.
It was previously suggested that the software giant would fund a revamped version of the sci-fi cult classic, which it would then air on its digital network.
However, Microsoft's Kate Barnes has now told Den of Geek that there is "nothing" to the rumours.
"I think the rumours took on a lot of speed because sci-fi is obviously something at the heart of Xbox, but no, there's nothing to that," Barnes is quoted as saying.
Casino Royale director Martin Campbell is still thought to be attached to the Blake's 7 remake.
The original series starred Gareth Thomas and Paul Darrow and aired for four series on BBC One between 1978 and 1981.

We’re big fans of Ian Roberts around here. Before there was Jason Collins… ten years before there was Gareth Thomas even… the Australian professional rugby player came out of the closet while still active in his sport. The year was 1995 and we think that makes Ian Roberts the very first openly gay active professional male team sports player in the world. (Correct us if we’re wrong.)
Ian is making further history: he is now the first out gay former professional rugby player to dress up like a German SS officer and be ridden like a pony by Michelle McGee (Jesse James‘ former mistress – the one that broke up his marriage to Sandra Bullock).
Oh Ian, why. We want to block this from our consciousness, but we can’t look away. We’re just hoping it’s all one massive joke. (Albeit a really bad one).

The new Blake's 7 - described as a "revolutionary reinvention" of the original - has a strong pedigree, with Heroes scribe Joe Pokaski and Casino Royale director Martin Campbell both on board.
With the crew set, my fan mind naturally turned to casting - who could hope to replace the iconic Gareth Thomas, Paul Darrow, Jacqueline Pearce and company?

Dancing on Ice contestant Matt Lapinskas finished runner-up despite falling in the bottom two of the public vote on all but one occasion during the series, official voting results have revealed.
Newly-released statistics by ITV show that the majority of viewers didn't support the ex-EastEnders actor and his professional partner Brianne Delcourt, who were beaten by Beth Tweddle and Dan Whiston in the final on March 10.
Lapinskas finished in the bottom two six out of the seven times he was eligible for the public vote before the final, coming last three times - in week five, week seven and week eight. The only time he and rumoured girlfriend Delcourt finished higher in the public vote was during 'Love Week' in the sixth round of the contest.

Dancing on Ice judge Jason Gardiner has hit out at "bulls**t" rumours surrounding the romantic life of finalist Matt Lapinskas.
Speaking to Digital Spy, Gardiner claimed that reports Lapinskas split with his former EastEnders co-star Shona McGarty for his Doi partner Brianne Delcourt are "just hype" with "really... no basis".
Gardiner similarly stressed that the belief Samia Ghadie stole Sylvain Longchambon from Hollyoaks actress Jennifer Metcalfe is "incorrect", adding that he thinks the couple chose to deny their relationship until recently to avoid "intrusion".
Gardiner also admitted that he doesn't think Luke Campbell deserves to join Lapinskas and Beth Tweddle in the Dancing on Ice final, noting that he is only there because of "a strange twist of fate", namely Gareth Thomas's exit due to illness.
He also played down suggestions that Dancing on Ice is in danger of getting axed, calling this series "one of the most...

The former Welsh rugby star was eliminated in last Sunday's (March 3) semi-final after feeling sick and dizzy from practising a 'flying' routine earlier in the week.
Thomas has now revealed that he has finally been cleared by doctors and will return along with all this year's Dancing on Ice contestants for a routine at the final this weekend, although he stressed that his "feet are staying on the floor".

Phillip Schofield has explained Gareth Thomas's unusual exit from Dancing on Ice last night and insisted that there was no way the rugby player could be kept in the show for the final.
Thomas was eliminated from the reality show's semi-final last night after falling sick and being unable to take part in a skate-off.
Consequently, Thomas was voted off the show without a final performance.
Speaking about why they didn't opt to have a four-contestant final, Schofield told This Morning: "A lot of people on Twitter last night were saying you should have put all four through to the final, but the structure of the show doesn't allow for that.... and unfortunately, the rule is, if you can't skate you have to go.
"It wasn't the production team, it was the medics that said 'you can't do this'... but we wish him lots of love and hopefully he'll...

Beth Tweddle, Matt Lapinskas and Luke Campbell made it through to the Dancing on Ice final tonight (March 3) after an unprecedented semi-final.
Welsh rugby player Gareth Thomas was forced to withdraw from the competition this evening after becoming unwell with severe motion sickness.
Thomas, 38, had been struggling all week with rehearsing a routine in which he would 'fly' across the rink. Footage showed him regularly vomiting and struggling to keep his composure.
After failing to perform his rehearsed routine, Thomas was told by paramedics that he would not be allowed to skate again this evening.
However, presenter Philip Schofield announced during the results show that Thomas received some of the lowest votes and therefore would have to perform again. On advice from the show's medical team, Thomas was forced to withdraw immediately from the competition.
It allowed gymnast Tweddle, EastEnders actor Lapinskas and boxer Campbell to sail through to the final without challenge.

Marc Jacobs has taken his first acting role in Disconnect, a web thriller (trailer on page three). Besides the awful dad jeans they made him wear, he says he didn't care for the grind of acting, even if he found the role interesting. “My character is Harvey and I run a house for minor [in age] Internet porn. It’s all virtual. People go online and they talk to these kids about their fantasies or whatever. I’m the sort of father of them in the house — the Fagan of all these wayward kids who come stay in this house. In the end, I’m really not a bad character. I’m actually the one who is protecting them in a way. I’ve taken them off the streets, and they don’t get harmed. They’re doing something that is virtual, though they are talking about sex. But you can look at it two ways.

I'm trying to find the newsworthiness of this study that links the rise in HIV infections in gay and bisexual to more men having unprotected sex? Isn't that generally how it happens? And it needs to stop.
Gay journalist and Superman fan Glen Weldon tells NPR that he won't be reading the comic penned by Orson Scott Card. "Superman is an ideal. He represents our best self. That's what he's for.

Gareth Thomas says 'Dancing On Ice' has given him a bum ''like two chestnuts''. The gay rugby star - who was forced to skate through pain last night (03.02.13) after suffering a foot infection - is enjoying the way the intensive training for the show has changed his physique. He said: ''My ass has changed shape - I've got a skater's ass now. ''You use your bum a lot. It gets rock hard. It's like two chestnuts.'' Gareth - who is partnered with professional skater Robin Johnstone - is also enjoying the sparkling outfits on the show, even though he had misgivings at first. He...

Yes, it's that time again on Sunday night, which can only mean one thing… Welcome to another Dancing on Ice live blog!

And with Keith Chegwin's rib injury putting his performance in doubt and Gareth Thomas's foot causing him jip, there's worry aplenty in the Doi camp tonight. Quite literally anything could happen. Jason Gardiner might even liken someone's skating to having locked-in syndrome. Again.
So stick with Digital Spy as we see which couples pull it out of the bag, who face-palms the floor and what awful outfits are paraded about. It's going to be great…
20:57Anyway, thanks for joining Digital Spy this evening. Hope you - like I - are just pleased that some goodies (Beth,...

Frank Ocean says that he forgives Chris Brown for their fight, and won't be pressing charges, ending my hopes of getting that monster off the street and out of the news.
Texas Governor Rick Perry took the opportunity of the Texas Scouts 64th Report to the State, where he addressed hundred of scouts, to call for the Boy Scouts to keep their discriminatory policies towards gay scouts. He then told the Associated Press that "I think you get tolerance and diversity every day in Scouting."

Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin will be broadcast in a special expanded version on PBS February 3 as part of Black History Month. Rustin, of course, was the right hand man of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and a gay man.
Asshat cornerback Chris Culliver will be heading from the Super Bowl to The Trevor Project, where he will undergo sensitivity training...
