“So You Think You Can Dance” returned in 2024 for its 18th season with some major changes and a new format. Below, meet the top 10 contestants who braved the initial auditions to advance to the main competition.
This season of “Sytycd” started with three episodes of solo auditions in which the contestants performed in their specialty styles. Three judges then decided their fates: Latin ballroom competitor and “Dancing with the Stars” champ Maksim Chmerkovskiy, “DWTS” and “Sytycd” alum Allison Holker, and her fellow “Sytycd” All-Star Comfort Fedoke. They selected the best 35 to advance to the next round where they learned and performed a routine by celebrity choreographer Galen Hooks. From there, only 16 went on to perform in the duets. And then one final cut narrowed the field to 10 participants.

Many dancers auditioned for a chance to compete on “So You Think You Can Dance” for season 18. Dozens were sent through to the choreography round by judges Maksim Chmerkovskiy, Comfort Fedoke and Allison Holker. But only 10 can advance from here.
“Dancers, are you ready? Judges, are you ready?” asks host Cat Deeley to enthusiastic cheers at the start of “The Final Auditions: Top Ten Revealed.” Allison then tells the dancers what they can expect, including the fact that this round of auditions will only last one day and will end with the selection of the top 10 dancers moving on, which seems to take many of the contestants by surprise. “Those 10 of you, who move forward will experience the challenges of actual working dancers, and let me remind you, only one of you will win $100,000.”

“So You Think You Can Dance” season 18 ended the first stage of the competition on Monday night, March 18, with the last dance hopefuls looking for a spot in the choreography round. So far the bar has been set pretty high by standout performances from dancers representing a variety of dance styles, shapes, sizes and ability levels. So who stood out among the last crop of contestants? Did the show save the best for last?
“We’ve put 25 people through,” said judge Allison Holker at the start of the show. She singled out contemporary dancer Braylon Browner and gymnast Dakayla Wilson as standouts from the first two days of auditions. Comfort Fedoke agreed that Wilson is capable of anything a professional choreographer could throw at her. Maksim Chmerkovskiy was especially impressed by contemporary dancer Easton Magliarditi. But “there’s so many other things outside of dance that we’re also looking at.

The season premiere of “So You Think You Can Dance” was full of mostly contemporary and hip-hop performances — some better, some worse — so it was a breath of fresh air when Jin Lee told us what her performance style would be: bone-breaking, Chinese folk and waving. “I lost my father two years ago,” the 24-year-old hopeful explained. “He brought me to be curious about so many things and so many forms of art … I would not be able to move like this without him.” Watch her complete audition above.
Her routine wasn’t the most grandiose that we saw on night one, but the emotions it evoked brought judges Allison Holker and Comfort Fedoke to tears. “I just felt the tide, I felt the energy just kept building up until you got into a bit of your bone-breaking, and yet it still had grace in it. It was lovely,” said Fedoke.

Maksim Chmerkovskiy is misunderstood.
At least that’s what he’ll say if you ask. The professional dancer, who previously competed on 17 seasons of “Dancing With the Stars” and won once, left the ABC series in 2017 and has a brand new role: judge on Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance.” Oddly enough, he’s best known for challenging the judges on his former show. So now, it may be coming back around.

I learned early in life that if you want to dish it out, you’ve got to be able to take it,” he tells Variety. “This has to be a professional exchange.
