CNN hopes it’s finally hit upon a way to solve a long-vexing puzzle: What should it be airing at 9 p.m.? The solution requires the network to fit together many pieces.
Starting this week, the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed news outlet will fill the hour with a range of different special reports, all under the rubric of “CNN Primetime.” Future 9 p.m. hours could include one-on-one interviews with newsmakers; town halls that put government officials in direct contact with the people affected by policy decisions; and other programs that feature surprising “gets” and scoops. The programming gambit backs away from the tried-and-true practice of relying on a single anchor or opinion host in the time slot, home to Sean Hannity, Alex Wagner and Rachel Maddow, and banks instead on creative ways of analyzing the news cycle.
CNN announced earlier Monday that anchor Laura Coates would on Wednesday at 9 p.

CNN may be getting ready to take a new swing at fixing its long-running 9 p.m. problem.
CNN is getting ready to launch a new show in that hour called “CNN Primetime,” which is described with a logline that says, “Join CNN’s top anchors for special events and unique conversations about the issues that matter the most.”
Both the show title and the programming descriptions are on display in interactive schedules that subscribers to cable and satellite services can call up to examine programming options. On Thursday, CNN is set to offer a “CNN Town Hall.” Another entry describes a one on one interview between a newsmaker and anchor Don Lemon. A person familiar with the matter says the details were inadvertently uploaded to cable systems and that only the town hall is a go for next week. A launch of “CNN Primetime” may not take place for some time,...

The next star anchor of CNN may not even work there yet.
Executives at the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed news outlet are considering the prospect of hiring a host from outside the network’s roster of correspondents to lead at least an hour in primetime, according to a person familiar with the matter. The plan surfaces after CNN CEO Chris Licht told a town-hall assemblage of CNN staffers Tuesday in New York that he intended to turn his focus to CNN’s 9 p.m. hour after debuting a new morning program led by Don Lemon, Poppy Harlow and Kaitlan Collins.
CNN declined to make executives available for comment.
While there is no guarantee the idea will come to fruition, its existence suggests the network is mulling a return to a previous era. CNN has long worked with hosts such as Larry King or Piers Morgan, who typically had little to do with the CNN newsroom,...

In the 1960s, an activist group of mothers coined the slogan, “War is not good for children and other living things.” Evidently, that message didn’t sink in to Bill Maher and his guests on Friday’s Real Time panel, as all talked openly about how we need to ramp things up in Ukraine based on some nuclear hypotheticals.
This week’s panel discussion included Michael Smerconish, host of CNN’s Smerconish,” and Neil Degrasse Tyson, the astrophysicist and TV star. After some ritual harrumphing about this week’s conclusion to the Jan. 6 hearings, the talk turned to Ukraine. Maher confessed “I love Ukraine,” and wondered why we can’t pinpoint attack with as much precision as we used to bump an asteroid with a satellilte.
Smerconish agreed that “there’s needs to be a response” in case of the apparent deployment of nuclear weapons, likening inaction to not bombing...

When Jake Tapper launches his new primetime show on CNN Tuesday at 9 p.m., he will have to turn from the intensely serious (an interview with President Joe Biden) to the sublime (a chat with actor Dwayne Johnson). It will be just one of many pivots the anchor will have to make in days to come.
The version of “CNN Tonight” that Tapper will lead through the midterm elections aims to provide “thoughtful, no-bulls—t context” around some of the biggest stories in the news cycle, according to a person familiar with the matter, and won’t tether the journalist to the CNN programs for which he is known best, “The Lead” and “State of the Union.” Viewers should expect Tapper to focus on fewer stories and to spend more time digging into them, and to hold forth with newsmakers and heads of state as well as authors, actors and figures of popular culture.

Republican Arizona House Speaker Rusty Bowers has clarified his claim that he would vote for Donald Trump again in 2024, despite testifying to the Jan 6. committee that he was pressured by the former president’s administration to overturn his state’s election results.
“I want somebody who does respect the Constitution and won’t intimidate people as a rule of his psyche,” he told CNN on Friday. “I want something different in the character of the man, or the woman — give me one. I’m ready to have character in that office. It’s critical at this time in our history.”

Let’s get after it: Even as CNN puts much of its energy into launching a new streaming-video hub, it’s also trying to figure out how to replace Chris Cuomo in its pivotal 9 p.m. time slot.
Some staffers at the WarnerMedia network believe CNN has been holding the equivalent of on-air tryouts in recent weeks, turning over the 9 p.m. hour to hosts like Michael Smerconish, Laura Coates and Brianna Keilar. CNN confirmed today that Michael Smerconish, who hosts his eponymous weekly program on the network each Saturday, will fill in for Chis Cuomo, anchoring CNN’s nightly 9 p.m Et slot, when Cuomo Prime Time is usually seen. That program’s host was suspended this week after a new information shed new light on his involvement in his brother Andrew Cuomo’s response to sexual harassment claims.
Smerconish has filled in for Cuomo in the past. This week, the network has been airing a second hour of lead-in program Anderson Cooper 360 in the Cuomo Prime Time slot.
Smerconish, who once identified as a Bush-Reagan Republican, says his show is non-partisan. He came to CNN in 2014 from MSNBC. He also hosts The Michael Smerconish Program on SiriusXM.

Michael Smerconish, the popular radio host who also leads a Saturday-morning hour on CNN, will show up in primetime next week when he fills in for Chris Cuomo at the WarnerMedia-backed cable-news outlet.
Smerconish is slated to fill in for Cuomo all next week, according to a spokesman, and the move isn’t necessarily surprising. Smerconish has worked Cuomo’s show in the past when the anchor has been on vacation. But he is the latest to take the reins at 9 p.m. after CNN’s decision to suspend Cuomo after new revelations about work he was doing for his brother, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, while his sibling faced multiple accusations of sexual harassment. Gov. Cuomo has denied wrongdoing, but the flurry of claims forced him out of office.
CNN said earlier this week that Chris Cuomo was suspended “indefinitely, pending further evaluation,” as it reviews his actions.

CNN viewers should get ready to see a lot more of Anderson Cooper this week.
Cooper, who has been with CNN since 2001, will co-host a new CNN “town hall” devoted to news about coronavirus Tuesday evening in the 9 p.m. slot typically anchored by Chris Cuomo, and is likely to fill in for that hour for the rest of the week, according to a person familiar with the matter. Sean Penn remains committed to his previous comments that the Covid-19 vaccine should be mandatory for all.
“I am so grateful that audiences — and yes, we’ll come around to that I would request only vaccinated audiences — have an opportunity to see this theatrically,” the actor told CNN’s Michael Smerconish in an interview about his film “Flag Day.” “It’s rare these days to have something that is exclusively theatrical. Eventually it will stream, and that’s a better time for the unvaccinated to see it, though I think I’ll probably offend them out of that choice.”
Penn made his stance clear in July, when he stated that he would not return to the set of “Gaslit,” the Watergate drama in which he plays attorney general John Mitchell, until the entire crew was vaccinated. And at the Aug. 11 premiere of his new film “Flag Day,” Penn said, “I...

Actor Sean Penn once again came out strongly against unvaccinated people, likening their insistance on free choice to a Second Amendment advocate pointing a gun in your face.
Speaking to CNN host Michael Smerconish, Penn – who previously refused to have unvaccinated people on the set of his Watergate series Gaslit — said that while he has “some areas of strong belief in the Second Amendment,” he can’t support those who use the Constitution to justify what he perceives as dangerous actions.
“It’s, you know, I have some areas of strong belief in the Second Amendment,” Penn said “But I think that you need to recognize how, you know, with something like this, you can’t go around pointing a gun in somebody’s face, which is what it is when people are unvaccinated.”
Penn said there were only two categories of people who are resisting being vaccinated.

Matthew McConaughey has not officially announced a run for Texas governor, but he’s talked about the possibility so much that CNN’s Michael Smerconish has branded the whole endeavor a “midlife crisis.”

A new Meek Mill song about police brutality released in the wake of George Floyd’s killing at the hands of Minneapolis cops has an unexpected featured artist: CNN’s Michael Smerconish.
The song, “The Otherside of America,” opens with President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign appeal to black voters — “What do you have to lose?” — and ends with a 2018 exchange between Smerconish and the rapper, born Robert Rihmeek Williams, who explained to Smerconish that he grew up in a neighborhood where police didn’t protect people and, thus, people had to protect themselves.
“If you go out to my neighborhood, you see seven people die a week I think you would probably carry a gun yourself. Would you?” the rapper asks in the song’s conclusion.

Presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders doesn’t seem to be forgiving – or at least forgetting – the Nazi army metaphor that now seems like the beginning of the end for Chris Matthews at MSNBC.

CNN host Michael Smerconish apparently thinks there may be a correlation between Sen. Bernie Sanders’ surging presidential campaign and the deadly coronavirus outbreak causing fear across the globe.
Smerconish introduced his bizarre theory on Saturday morning’s installment of his self-titled show, Smerconish.
“Can either coronavirus or Bernie Sanders be stopped?” he pondered before attempting to explain what he was talking about.
“An already unpredictable presidential campaign just became more so. A list of intangibles which included the impact of impeachment, a large Democratic field, congested candidate lanes, and the looming prospect of no one getting the majority of delegates needed to secure the nomination before the convention now includes the spread of a deadly virus,” Smerconish stated.
His commentary was accompanied by a banner across the screen blaring: “Can Either Coronavirus or Bernie Sanders Be Stopped?”
CNN posted video of the segment on Twitter, but the banner had been removed.

Donna Rotunno, one of Harvey Weinstein’s lead attorneys, says the sheer number of women who have come forward to accuse the disgraced movie mogul of sexual misconduct could actually help him in his criminal trial, which begins on Monday.
During a Saturday morning interview with CNN, host Michael Smerconish asked Rotunno how the court would be able to find a “fair and impartial jury” given that more than 100 women have publicly accused Weinstein of misconduct.

Harvey Weinstein defense attorney Donna Rotunno told CNN host Michael Smerconish on Friday that jurors in his upcoming rape trial “don’t have to like everything he’s ever done in his life to find that he’s not a rapist.”
Weinstein faces trial next week on several sex-crime charges. Weinstein has pleaded not guilty to all charges, maintaining any sexual encounters were consensual. The trial is certain to be an all-out media circus, given Weinstein’s status as the initial #MeToo figure, with dozens of accusations against him by actresses including Ashley Judd, Rose McGowan and Annabella Sciorra.
Rotunno again said to Smerconish that the defense will argue that any sex Weinstein engaged in was consensual. “We have a wealth of evidence in our arsenal to be able to say these cases don’t rise to the level of rape.”
She also attacked one potential prominent witness against Weinstein.

Controversy over “fake news” burst into view again this past weekend, on the anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission .
Saturday, July 20th marked 50 years since astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin beat the Soviets’ ill-fated unmanned Luna 15 to the lunar surface. The coming of this date was long a pop culture fixation.
Between Hollywood’s First Man (deftly casting emotionally absent Ryan Gosling as Armstrong) and an onslaught of retrospectives on Discovery, NatGeo, Science and Smithsonian channels, reliving Apollo has been one of the few feel-good media stories going.

Meek Mill addressed Jay-z’s headlining-generating “What’s Free” verse during a recent CNN interview, explaining that the guest rapper wasn’t shaming Kanye West for frequently wearing one of President Trump’s “Make America Great Again” hats.
On the track, which appears on Mill’s recently issued fourth LP, Champions, Jay-z rhymes, “No red hat, don’t Michael and Prince me and ‘Ye/ They separate you when you got Michael and Prince’s DNA.” Many fans speculated that the line was crafted as a West diss – a theory he himself debunked,...

Modern-day McCarthyism apparently doesn’t stand a chance against Alan Dershowitz, who boasted today on CNN that he “is winning the battle on Martha’s Vineyard.”
Dershowitz declared victory on this morning’s Smerconish, just 10 days after the socially embattled coastal summerer wrote a column for The Hill in which he bemoaned being shunned by old friends and other warm-weather trippers on the famously liberal (and famously elite) Martha’s Vineyard.
Watch a clip below.
The Harvard law prof emeritus wrote – to much internet snarking – that the cause of all the cold shoulders was his very public arguments against the impeachment of President Donald Trump.
“For them,” he wrote about his Vineyard neighbors on June 27, “it is enough that what I have said about the Constitution might help Trump. So they are shunning me and trying to ban me from their social life on Martha’s Vineyard.”

This week’s Real Time with Bill Maher on HBO will likely cover the ongoing refugee and immigration crisis at the southern USA and Mexico border. The finger pointing and lack of action from Potus who blames the Democratic party and Congress will most definitely be a focal subject. Up first with Maher is NRA (National Rifle Association) television host Colion Noir booked as the top-of-show interview guest. Collins Idehen Jr. goes by the name Colion Noir on the air, and he has issues with media revealing the names of shooters. In a video interview, he said: “These kids aren’t being […]

Former Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger told CNN's Michael Smerconish today that he’s happy President Donald Trump made a trip to California. Or specifically, that Trump’s only made one trip to California. "I'm so happy that he's only made one trip,” Schwarzenegger said. “Look, I mean the very fact that he doesn’t want us to write-off our state tax is a direct attack on Californians. So I don’t think that he's been good for California. I don't think he cares…...

Stormy Daniels’ lawyer, Michael Avenatti, said Saturday that “at least” 10 people have offered to cover the $1 million penalty the adult star would incur should she speak out about her alleged affair with President Donald Trump. Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, filed a civil suit against the president in Los Angeles Superior Court on Tuesday, claiming that since Trump never signed the confidentiality agreement, it’s null and void. Asked by CNN’s Michael Smerconish whether anyone “offered to pony up the million dollars to protect her,” her lawyer, Avenatti, said: “At least 10 individuals in the last three days...
