Michael Huttner has spent decades in the trenches of progressive politics. In the mid-2000s, he co-founded ProgressNow, a network of state-level liberal communications hubs that has 23 chapters and 4 million members and acts as a counterweight to right-wing think tanks and activist groups. In 2010, he organized one of the earliest meetings to push for the full decriminalization of marijuana in Colorado, setting in motion one of the first successful campaigns anywhere in America to legalize pot. He’s worked on Democratic political campaigns, ran the lefty PR agency Fenton, and...

The satirist Ambrose Bierce, author of the Devil’s Dictionary, once defined radicalism as “the conservatism of tomorrow injected into the affairs of today.”
What Bierce wittily captured — that today’s radicals are tomorrow’s normies — means that at any given moment, the current political establishment will be fighting off the inevitable.
The Brahmins of today don’t battle with ideas, because as Bierce pointed out, their belief systems are usually regressive and unpopular, only they don’t know it yet. The battle is almost always waged instead over personality,...

A new national poll suggests that Bernie Sanders' continued presence in the Democratic primary has damaged front-runner Hillary Clinton by helping close the gap between the former secretary of state and presumptive Gop nominee Donald Trump. The NBC/Wall Street Journal poll released Sunday shows that Clinton's lead over the billionaire businessman has shrunk to just three points, with the former first lady "weighed down by resistance from [a] significant chunk of Sanders supporters," as CNBC chief Washington correspondent John Harwood tweeted. Pollsters, too, have attributed Clinton's shrinking lead in part to resistance from Sanders supporters. While 88 percent of Clinton...

Andrew Breitbart and his Big Journalism colleagues have been waging all-out internet war on Countdown host Keith Olbermann over his failure to correct (or clarify) guest Markos Moulitsas' comments on sexual assaults at Occupy encampments, and for statements Olbermann has made on Twitter since then that seem to indicate denial that any such assaults occurred. While there is serious, legitimate criticism to be made of Olbermann here, the Breitbart crew undermines that with overreaches and lies.

Chicago – Billing Andrew Rossi’s documentary “Page One” as a year in the life of The New York Times is a trifle misleading. Such a sprawling premise would demand a running time better suited to a miniseries than a 92-minute feature. Rossi limits his focus to the Media Desk and the reporters struggling to keep their paper relevant, but like all great documentaries, the film is about so much more than the figures inhabiting its foreground.
In fact, “Page One” may be the best film yet made about the current crises facing American journalists, whose authoritative voice is gradually being drowned out an endless stream of bloggers. Just as another NYC publication, Vogue, considers itself the center of the fashion universe (and is well-chronicled by R.J. Cutler’s “The September Issue”), the Times positions itself as the trend-setting news source that second-tier papers scramble to imitate. Though Rossi provides plenty...

Keith Olbermann opened the latest chapter in his itinerant broadcasting career last night, and introduced as a contributing guest Markos Moulitsas, founder of DailyKos, to his new program. Moulitsas was on to ostensibly explain why he stopped appearing on MSNBC roughly a year ago, but ended up using the reclaimed platform of a broadcast medium to antagonize his former allies at MSNBC, especially Morning Joe Host Joe Scarborough, to whom he referred as a "loser." #Newtone.

Al Gore is accusing Rupert Murdoch and his evil empire News Corporation of abusing their power, after learning three weeks ago that his left-leaning Current TV would no longer be carried by Italy's Sky Italia due to the hiring of Keith Olbermann, who has been critical of News Corp. in the past. Gore said: "News Corporation is an international conglomerate with an ideological agenda. It seeks political power in every nation they operate. They wield that power to shut down voices that disagree with the agenda of Rupert Murdoch." Olbermann's Countdown with Keith Olbermann, featuring such contributors as Michael Moore, Ken Burns, Richard Lewis, and Daily Kos founder Markos Moulitsas, will make its Current TV debut on June 20, but not in Italy. Gore has good reason to be ticked off: one in three Sky Italia viewers tune in to Current TV at any given time [...]...

New York, NY, United States (Ahn Entertainment) - Docu-filmmaker Michael Moore is joining Keith Olbermann's new show as a contributor. Moore will be joined by other regular contributors, including comedian Richard Lewis, filmmaker Ken Burns, National Association of Free Clinics exec director Nicole D. Lamoureux, and Daily Kos founder Markos Moulitsas on the upcoming Current TV commentary show "Countdown with Keith Olbermann."
Olbermann debuted "Countdown with Keith Olbermann" in MSNBC in 2003, but he parted ways with the network earlier this year.
The network said it ended its contract with Olbermann, offering no further explanation, although it has been said that the decision was made soon after the end of his suspension.
In February, he announced his decision to join Current TV, with his new show carrying the same title. He has also been appointed the network's Chief News Officer as well as the show's executive producer.

Sen. Jon Tester hunts, farms, has seven fingers, and could well determine his party's fate in 2012. So why are liberals at his throat?
Jon Tester, United States senator, is face down in the mud. Earlier today, Tester and his wife, Sharla, drove from Great Falls, Mont., to their home, T-Bone Farms, 80 miles northeast. It's a journey the Testers have been making nearly every weekend since Jon joined the Senate in January 2007. As usual, they followed the Teton River through sloping sandstone canyons and out onto a vast expanse of flat, treeless farmland, with only the occasional man-made interruption: the United Grain silos in Kershaw, the Ace High Casino in Loma, a billboard about chewing tobacco. "Quitting Was Tough," it said, "But I'm Tougher." The trip took 80 minutes.

Real Time host Bill Maher, who normally says "teabagger" more frequently than a foreman on a Lipton assembly line, was on his best behavior last night for "Tea Party Person" (and Hottest Conservative New Media Woman) Dana Loesch. Both he and DailyKos founder Markos Moulitsas, another aficionado of the term, studiously avoided using the Tea Party-coined-then-rejected appellation throughout most of the show, obviously in deference to Loesch.
