For nearly 40 years, Yo La Tengo have been carrying on one of the great conversations in rock & roll history, welcoming us into their little idyll of pastoral noise, mumbled epiphanies, and sublime cover song choices. Even a diehard fan might struggle to pass a multiple-choice exam where you have to match a list of their song titles with the album they were on, but that sense of familiarity and constancy imbues every new release with the feeling of checking in with old friends. What’s more, their attention to detail...

Jeff Tweedy has released a cover of Roky Erickson’s “For You (I’d Do Anything),” from the upcoming compilation, May the Circle Remain Unbroken: A Tribute to Roky Erickson, set to arrive July 17th via Light in the Attic (a special vinyl version will be released as a Record Store Day exclusive).
Tweedy offers a wholly unique take on “For You (I’d Do Anything),” doing away with the tender country pluck of Erickson’s original, and instead using a mix of synths and pianos to craft a sweet and meditative soundscape.

When Roky Erickson’s 1981 cult classic album The Evil One was rereleased in 1987, it opened with the skronky “Two-Headed Dog (Red Temple Prayer),” a song loosely inspired by the believe-it-or-not head-transplant experiments conducted by a Soviet surgeon in the Fifties. Over a snaking electric guitar lead, Erickson howled about “working in the Kremlin with a two-headed dog.”
Margo Price and her band put their own spin on the song for an upcoming tribute album to Erickson. While she flip-flops the title to “Red Temple Prayer (Two-Headed Dog),” the Nashville singer-songwriter...

I’m a sucker for a good scary song. Just throw in some eerie wind effects, a creature howling, a zombie or two gibbering, and you’ve got my attention. Halloween is to me what Christmas is to Mariah Carey fans: an excuse to listen to thematic songs all month long. (Oh, and to hoard pumpkins like a squirrel preparing for winter.)
Not all of these songs are outright spooky — we’ve all heard “Thriller” one too many times. Instead, they’re a collection of creepy character studies, atmospheric tunes,...

I saw Roky Erickson in performance for the last time on September 5th, 2017, at Rough Trade Records in Brooklyn. It turned out to be the best of the many Erickson shows I saw over almost three decades. I was not in the right space/time quadrant to see His Enduring Psychedelic Highness in his original habitat and blow-up years: Texas and San Francisco between 1966 and 1967, with Austin-born seers the 13th Floor Elevators when that band was on the perpetual edge of trouble and discovery with a frantic union of pop-song nerve,...

Roky Erickson, one of the most enduring and adventurous exponents of American psychedelic rock, is dead. He was 71.
The cause of death had not been released and the representatives appealed for privacy for his family.
Erickson's death on Friday was confirmed by his representatives in a statement that described him as a "heroic icon of modern rock'n'roll and one of the best friends the music ever had", reports theguardian.com.
Musician Billy Gibbons, a long-time friend, said: "It's almost unfathomable to contemplate a world without Roky Erickson. He created his own musical galaxy and early on was a true inspiration."
Erickson was the frontman of the 13th Floor Elevators, a psych-rock band from Austin, Texas, where he grew up. Their rollicking debut single "You're Gonna Miss Me", included on the Nuggets compilation that defines 1960s garage rock, remains one of the most celebrated songs from that scene.

In an early-Eighties documentary on Roky Erickson, an interviewer asked the late singer-guitarist about his religious background.
“Well, I’ve gone through three changes,” Erickson responds. “I thought I was a Christian, then I was with the devil … and then the third one where I know who I am; I feel like I’m a monster. I feel like I know I’m the robe of many colors spoke of in the Bible: in other words, a demon, a gremlin, a goblin, a vampire, a ghost and an alien with a brain about this big.

The 13th Floor Elevators' Roky Erickson gave his mind and his band to psychedelics, and musicians in Texas and Beyond want more.
"You're gonna miss me when I'm gone," Roky Erickson sang on his band's biggest hit. The lead vocalist, guitarist and songwriter for the pioneering psychedelic rock band The 13th Floor Elevators was prescient. Musicians in his home state of Texas, and far beyond, are mourning a major inspiration. Erickson died in Austin, Texas, on Friday, May 31, according to Variety. The cause of death was not disclosed. Erickson was 71.
“Erickson had a visionary zeal rarely seen in 1965 when he co-founded the 13th Floor Elevators,” his management said in a statement. “The band’s original songs, many written with lyricist Tommy Hall, coupled with Erickson’s super-charged vocals and guitar, sparked the psychedelic music revolution in the mid-1960s, and led to a new role of what rock could be.

Los Angeles punks Death Valley Girls tasked Iggy Pop with eating a hamburger in the video for their new song, “Disaster (Is What We’re After).”
The Kansas Bowling-directed clip is a direct homage to a scene in Danish filmmaker Jørgen Leth’s 1982 film, 66 Scenes of America, in which Andy Warhol eats a hamburger. Iggy Pop of course puts his own spin on the simple activity, nodding along to Death Valley Girls’ infectious rocker and even taking a healthy, low-carb approach halfway through when he discards one of the buns.

The bizarre, guest-filled Dr. Demento Covered in Punk has unveiled the new video for the compilation track “Creature With the Atom Brain,” Quintron & Miss Pussycat’s cover of the 1981 Roky Erickson song.
The video, directed by Miss Pussycat, combines puppeteering with Frankenstein’s monster to present a gruesome tale of revenge and “creature love.” Dr. Demento appears in puppet form as a newscaster, with the legendary radio personality himself providing the voice.
One of the highlights of the Dr. Demento Covered in Punk comp is William Shatner’s melodramatic rendition of the Cramps’ “Garbageman.

Reviews like this are tough, because a movie like Return of the Living Dead has been discussed-to-death on the internet for at least the last two decades. What can one possibly say that another hasn’t already? In addition to that, this is also the third Blu-ray release of the film I have seen. There was the disappointing MGM release in 2010, and then much better Second Sight release from the UK that dropped in 2012 and resurrected the original audio track containing the songs that were cut from the Us release. And here comes Scream Factory to topple them all. Sorry to spoil my review, but this is the definitive Blu-ray release of Return of the Living Dead. I have never seen this movie look so beautiful in all the years I have watched it. Couple with that, the fact that there are several audio options for you to choose from,...

This week we invite PopOptiq contributor Felix Vasquez Jr. To discuss an emotionally devastating episode of The Walking Dead. “Thank You” left us with plenty of questions including whether or not a certain character indeed died and whether or not Rick Grimes was bit in the hand. All this and more.

From start to finish, the episode, aptly titled “Conquer” was a surprising conclusion to what many are calling the best season of The Walking Dead, so far. “Conquer” features three similar stories running along parallel tracks, as well as the return of one of our favourite characters. This week, guest host Josh Mocle joins us to discuss the season finale and what we expect from season six.

As the penultimate episode of the season, “Try” moves a lot of pieces to set the stage for next week’s finale. Tensions have been simmering in Alexandria since the day our survivors arrived, and this week they reached a boiling point as Rick Grimes loses total control. This week on The Walking Dead, we get to meet some of the habitants of Alexandria. Through a series of lengthy interviews (videotaped by Deanna), we’re treated to a clever juxtaposition of our group of survivors with the pristine, civilized surroundings of this new safe haven. Having now seen the relative innocence of Alexandria, it’s arguable that the inhabitants need Rick’s group more than our survivors need them. Here to discuss this and many other aspects of “Remember” is Sound On Sight contributor, Felix Vasquez Jr..

As Felix Vasquez wrote in his review, “though “The Distance” might be another episode where some might declare that really nothing happens, this isn’t quite the case, as much occurs within the time span of the episode.” This week we invite our managing editor Deepayan Sengupta to discuss the episode at length. Among the many topics is the gay kiss, the nighttime getaway and sloppy writing.

This week, our survivors attempt to walk sixty miles down one long rural road for almost the entire duration of the episode’s run time. “Them” is an episode chock full of symbolic, meditative moments and an installment more concerned with charting the group’s emotional journey as appose to their physical journey. This week, former co-host Simon Howell returns to our Walking Dead podcast to discuss how the show has progressed over the years and share his thoughts on what the show needs to change in order to successfully move forward. This week on The Walking Dead, the beautiful opening montage makes us believe it is showing us things that had already happened on the road, but was instead foreshadowing things to come; a great little trick, with most of us likely assuming that our band of survivors were mourning the loss of Beth and not Tyrese. From beginning to end, this episode toyed with viewer’s emotions, and we’ve got plenty to say about it. Is killing Tyrese a decision made for the sake of narrative momentum, character development or purely to elicit an emotional response in the audience? We’ll let you know what we think. All this and more …

As a midseason capper, “Coda” was a bit of a mixed bag. Rick attempts to negotiate with Dawn for the lives of Carol and Beth, while Gabriel makes a shocking discovery of his own. “Coda” has some nice moments, but overall it was an unsatisfying end to the first half of season five. To help us discuss our disappointment in the episode, we’ve invited Todd VanDerWerff the Culture Editor for Vox.

“Consumed” is a welcome return to two of the show’s most compelling characters; and an episode that gives two of our least talkative survivors a chance to express themselves and some much-needed breathing room to examine how much they’ve both changed in five seasons. This week we discuss the fate of Carol, speculate on how the mid-season will end, and provide feedback on everything from visual motifs to the score to the action set piece and so much more.

“Self Help” gives Abraham and Eugene their first spotlight since they first made an appearance last season. Eugene has been the sole remaining hope in this post-apocalyptic world, and this week The Walking Dead puts that to an end. The group, led by Sgt. Abraham Ford (fuelled with a healthy supply of testosterone) hits the open road in a troublesome journey full of pitstops and roadblocks. Here to review the episode is guest host Zach Handlen from The Av Club.

For the fourth episode of the Foo Fighters' musical travelogue Sonic Highways, Dave Grohl and Co. headed to Austin, Texas Friday night to explore the history and culture of, as Grohl put it, "some of the weirdest, freakiest stuff in the city that inspires people all over the world." Delving into everything from Austin City Limits and South by Southwest to Willie Nelson, Roky Erickson and Butthole Surfers, the episode deftly cast a wide net on the diverse city. "When you bailed from your hometown," said Butthole Surfers frontman Gibby Haynes,...

This week, The Walking Dead returns to the big city. It’s been a long time since we last saw the streets of Atlanta, and it makes a welcome return here. Beth wakes up in a hospital being run by a skeleton staff which consists of a group of wards, local police, a kind janitor named Noah (Tyler James Williams), and one physician, Dr. Steven Edwards (Cullen Moss). Beth was apparently rescued and brought over to recover, but as per usual, something ain’t right. Joining us this week to discuss the episode is Sound On Sight Assistant TV Editor, Deepayan Sengupta.

A mysterious black horse and a cloaked death-like figure travel through the dreams and nightmares of a young boy in “Evil Things,” the new video from dark psychedelic rockers The Black Angels. Directed by artist/photographer/filmmaker Kevin Castanheira, the film's haunting imagery compliments the droning, pulsing cosmic tones and heavy, Sabbath-style rhythms that permeate the band's critically-acclaimed new album Indigo Meadow. The Black Angels hail from Austin, Texas, and recently played South By Southwest on the heels of a Winter tour with the legendary Roky Erickson (one of the giants of postmodern rock). They will be curating their own seventh annual Austin Psych Fest on May 2nd through 4th, featuring bands like The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Loop, The Dandy Warhols and Panda Bear. Be sure to also check out the Psycho-inspired video for Melinda Ortner's “One More Day,” which debuted on Fearnet to coincide with the Season 2 premiere of Bates Motel.
