Have you ever wondered how, year after year, the folks at Game Freak manage to conjure up weird and wonderful new Pokémon?
With a current Pokédex of well over 800 entries and at least 100 more to come with this year’s Sword and Shield, surely there’s been moments when the series’ character designers have hit a creative roadblock, right? The answer, as if there was any ever doubt, is a big fat yes. Talented they may be, but Tako Unno and Ken Sugimori have often found themselves stuck between a rock and a hard place when it comes to imagining new ‘Mons into existence.
As part of an interview with Nintendo Dream magazine, the pair discussed in great detail the creative process behind each Generation’s beloved starter Pokémon.
“The way we create the three starter Pokémon is usually very similar.” says Sugimori, adding that, “What’s most important is...

The Pokémon Company has been incredibly busy behind the scenes as of late, it seems. In the first half of 2019 alone, Pokéfans have already been treated to the likes of live-action flick Detective Pikachu and confirmation of two brand new Switch games, but the streak of success doesn’t end there.
As announced earlier this week, a special press conference detailing current and future Pokémon projects aired yesterday, leaving a wealth of new details to pore over in its wake. We’ve already covered one of those reveals – a sequel to the original Detective Pikachu 3Ds game – over here, but what of the rest? Well, as outlined previously, Nintendo’s mobile game partner DeNa (Super Mario Run) has been called upon once more to provide its services, this time in the form of Pokémon Masters.
Due to release later this year for iOS and Android devices, this particular addition to...

I absolutely love Nintendo’s approach to downloadable content. Be it Mr. Iwata himself or some programmer who worked on Nintendo Land, it seems the idea of only offering Dlc that adds substantial value has permeated everyone and everything in the company. I can attest to it personally, too – I purchased every single Dlc pack in Fire Emblem: Awakening, and it was by far the most fun-for-my-dollar Dlc I’ve ever sprung for. You mileage may vary, but not by much.
In a recent 4Gamer interview with Pokémon art director Ken Sugimori on Pokémon X and Y, the man who draws Pikachu was very clear about how he, Game Freak, and The Pokémon Company feel about the prospect of charging a fee per Pocket Monster.
When it comes to business, the one thing I’ve always said ‘no!’ to is ‘the act of buying Pokémon with money.’ That is something...

I am twenty-five years old and a Pokemon nut.
And I’m not ashamed to say that (much).
For myself (and millions of other players world-wide) it’s been a healthy (or, rather, unhealthy) chunk of our life since the first 150 assorted fighting critters burst onto English screens almost twelve years ago. Play me the trainer battle jingle from, for example, Pokemon LeafGreen and I’ll tell you how it reminds me of those long days indoors at University (social life, what’s that?). Show me a picture of penguin pokemon Piplup and I’ll tell you my fond memories of first stepping into the Sinnoh region, whilst sat in the cinema staff room on a lunch-break. Give me the name Milotic and I’ll tell you how many times my Kingdra came up against my mate’s aforementioned pink serpent (those two were mortal enemies by the end).
The point is,...
