Hollywood star Nicole Kidman received a warm welcome on Broadway Saturday evening when she made an appearance at a performance of Hugh Jackman’s ‘The Music Man’ revival.
During an auction for the charity Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, Kidman made her presence known when she bid a hefty sum of 100,000 for a hat signed by Jackman, reports Variety.
Jackman shared a video of the meeting on Twitter, thanking his fellow Australian thespian for her support.
“I love you. I love Broadway. And I love what they do, Broadway Cares, but I also want to say this show is extraordinary,” Kidman said, taking the microphone after approaching the stage at the Winter Garden Theatre.
“I’ve known Nic for almost 30 years. I’ve worked with her. I can tell you this is not a surprise to me. She is one of the most generous souls I know,” Jackman said, quoted by Variety.

Jonathan Groff is opening up about his early days in New York City and his first same-sex kiss.
The future “Frozen” and “Hamilton” star was only about 19 years old when he was a waiter at the Chelsea Grill in Hell’s Kitchen. It’s there that he met Tom Viola, executive director of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS (BC/Efa).
“He talked to me about the organization and the good that they did for the community and he also talked to me about how they have volunteers standing with red buckets collection money [at Broadway theaters],” Groff tells Jan Svendsen on a new episode of the “Broadway Gives Back” podcast.
He added, “You could watch the second act of Broadway shows by signing up as a volunteer. So the volunteering aspect of the organization, plus the fact that I could see theater got me super interested.”

The red bucket brigades so long-familiar to Broadway spring audiences were back this year after a two-year pandemic absence, and the results were heartening: donations across Broadway, Off Broadway and touring productions to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS totaled 4,288,994.
One musical in particular outdid itself: The Music Man, starring Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster, raised a single-show record of 2,071,806 through post-show memorabilia auctions and autographed poster sales.
Until the pandemic, spring on Broadway meant onstage, post-show appeals from cast members of participating shows asking audiences to drop some cash into the red buckets in the lobby. Traditionally, the cast members would old the buckets, offering the fast-moving lines of donors the chance for a quick up-close hello with the stars. This year, the ongoing threat of Covid infection prevented direct interaction with casts, so Broadway Cares volunteers and staff thanked audiences for the donations.

Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS provided a record $18.1 million in grants to a pandemic-slammed industry during the fiscal year ending September 30, 2020, the most ever awarded in the organization’s 32-year history.
Cautioning that “any enthusiasm” about the record is “tempered with the recognition that continued fundraising is essential to ensure healthy meals, lifesaving medication and emergency assistance are still available as the country faces an uncertain future,” the organization noted that the $18.1 million in 2020 grants exceeds 2019 grant-making by 22 percent. Last year’s $14.8 million in grants had been the previous annual record.
“We are extremely grateful to everyone in the theater community – those onstage, backstage and in the audience – for sharing their generosity and talents to accomplish such a feat when half our fiscal year was consumed by a pandemic,” said Tom Viola, executive director of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.

Over the years, I have done a number of benefits for BroadwayWorld. Rob Diamond has a wonderful relationship with Tom Viola and everyone at Broadway Cares Equity Fights AIDS and the that has been the focus of the fundraising at these events. Now, when I do, pretty much, anything, I put alot of thought on the 'assignment' and am not a fan of, what I like to call, Park amp Bark events. I try to match talents and material in a very special way. This brings us to Laila Robins.

Whether you’re angling for a selfie with Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick or a “Cabaret” poster signed by Alan Cumming, there are many ways to give to the Broadway community’s most exuberant charity organization. Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS is currently in full swing, with its fall fundraising efforts—culminating in the always exciting 26th Annual Gypsy of the Year competition—and an array of other theatrical events available for theatergoers and philanthropists alike. That charity, volunteerism, and activism are principles embedded deep in the theater community is no coincidence. “Actors [and entertainment professionals] are extraordinarily creative and expressive people,” Tom Viola, executive director of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, told Backstage. “There’s a lot of sharing of emotion, a lot of understanding of emotion, and when you see people in positions of pain and hurt and need, I think those kind of people who are in touch with emotions want to respond.” This April, the Broadway community renews its commitment by giving back to organizations big and small—starting huge. On April 3, Carnegie Hall will host a gala benefit concert of “Guys and Dolls,” starring Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally, Patrick Wilson, and Sierra Boggess, to raise funds for the landmark’s artistic, education, and community programs. “I like to say yes to as many things as I can,” said Boggess, who will portray the iconic mission doll Sergeant Sarah Brown.
