- He went 211-146 with a 3.47 ERA in 17 seasons with the Dodgers and Athletics. He was the pitching coach for the Arizona Diamondbacks when they won the 2001 World Series.
- He was drafted in the first round by the Dodgers in 1977 out of Eastern Michigan University.

- His three children (two sons and one daughter) survive him. Two sons and one daughter, they are Dylan (b. ~1989), Riley (b. ~1991), and Kelly (b. ~1996). His ex wife also survives him.
