Fockers who? Meet “The Zweiflers” instead: Brand new winners of Canneseries.
Created and showrun by David Hadda, the show picked up multiple awards at the French TV fest on Wednesday, including best series and music. Selected as a Variety Hot Pick earlier this month, “it’s destined to be billed as a Jewish ‘Succession’ set in contemporary Germany, with all the baggage that can bring to the table, Variety wrote.
That being said, its creator had another dysfunctional family on his mind.
“My biggest influence was ‘The Sopranos’ and I always said I wanted to do a Jewish ‘Sopranos’! The idea was to change the narrative from the victims’ perspective in Germany to a Jewish patriarch and Holocaust survivor who had lost everything – and everyone, and then came back to rebuild his life. That was empowering for me,” said Hadda.

Update: Finnish comedy “Money Shot,” about an ex-porn star venturing out of her comfort zone, is heading to Canneseries. The producers have also shared a first trailer with Variety.
Sari, now in her forties, gets fired from her last role. Forced to find a new way to make a living, she teams up with Linnea – an aspiring director who struggles to get into film school. They start to make feminist erotic films and begin a journey to fulfil women’s desires. As well as their own.
Produced by Solar Republic and sold by Federation Studios and Nordisk Film, it stars Pihla Viitala as Sari and Reetta Ylä-Rautio as her new – and unlikely – partner in crime. Paula Vesala, Mikko Kouki, Jukka Puotila and Alex Anton are featured as well.

At twelve years old, Maria Åkerblom heard the voice of an angel. It came in a dream and she spoke its words to those around her as though in a trance. She became a traveling sensation as soon as the pious caught on, going city to city to tell God-fearing Finnish people that salvation was real. Eventually she grew into an adult with a flock of believers in tow—each devout “child” selling his/her possessions to donate their earnings to the cause. The sect became more and more insulated until abuse ran rampant and crimes led back to their door. And through it all she held tightly to her truth with many never wavering in their fealty. Their purpose relied on Maria’s sanity, so to them she was.

The number of big-ticket dramas coming to the international market continues to increase as viewers embrace shows from all corners and consume them on a dizzying range of channels and platforms.
In a cluttered landscape, movie-inspired shows and book adaptations have built-in marketing appeal and bring a fan base, which is one way to cut through. There are multiple examples of both at MipTV,
from “Four Weddings and a Funeral” and “To Catch a Thief,” to Canneseries opener “Vernon Subutex,” based on the hip French novel.
“The Walking Dead” producer Channing Powell envisages a dystopian future about a technology embedded inside our heads, while other series tackle the populist politics taking hold in many parts of the world. Immigration tales from the past, but with a modern-day relevance are also to the fore.

John Simm plays a rabble-rousing populist politician in “Cold Courage,” and Lionsgate has stepped up and taken international rights to the series.
Based on the series of novels by Pekka Hiltunen, the drama is billed as the biggest yet out of Finland and will bow on the Viaplay streaming service in Scandinavia. With a cast from all over Europe and a shoot spanning Belgium, Finland, Ireland, and the U.K., “Cold Courage” is international in scope and ambition.
That was part of the appeal for Simm, a familiar face on British TV, playing The Master in “Doctor Who” and starring in a host of other shows for British networks. “There was a point I was on BBC and ITV at the same time and that was a bit much,” he told Variety. “I thought it would be nice to step away from that for a little bit and do something I haven’t done,...

Drew Struzan has been doing a lot of posters for a guy who's supposed to retired. Here's a great looking poster he did for Frank Darabont's new TNT series Mob City.
The six-part series takes place in Los Angeles in 1947, and it's based on the real-life accounts of the cops and gangsters of the time. "This is the seductive story of the violent crime underbelly of America's most glamorous city and those who wanted to control it."
The new series stars Walking Dead alums Jon Bernthal and Jeffrey DeMunn, as well as Ed Burns, Simon Pegg, Neal McDonough, Jeremy Luke, and more.
The show is set to premiere on December 4th, and here's the synopsis:
Jon Bernthal plays Joe Teague, an ex-Marine now working as an Lapd cop in an era rampant with police corruption. Jeffrey DeMunn plays Detective Hal Morrison, who heads the Lapd’s new mob squad,...

So what do we watch now that "Breaking Bad" is over? Well, the good news is that television is going through a bit of renaissance with new, promising shows continuing to arrive like clockwork. And in a couple of months, Frank Darabont—who helped launch the phenomenon "The Walking Dead"—will try to achieve the same success with the gangster world in his new event series, "Mob City." Two new TV spots have dropped that certainly turn up the heat on our anticipation for this one. Featuring an ensemble that includes Jon Bernthal, Jeffrey DeMunn, Jeremy Strong, Neal McDonough, Milo Ventimiglia, Ron Rifkin, Pihla Viitala, Alexa Davalos and Simon Pegg, the series will center on Joe Teague, an ex-Marine now working as an L.A.P.D. cop in an era rampant with police corruption. This certainly looks stylish, with ambitions that don't seem to go beyond being a pretty decent bite of period-era pulp,...

Chicago – Witches were always my monster of choice as a child. Their façade of maternal warmth that routinely gave way to fiendish malice was both scary and oddly funny. Actresses love playing this archetype because it allows them to break all the rules followed by photogenic starlets. The fun had by everyone in a witch’s cape—from Margaret Hamilton to Angelica Huston—is timelessly infectious.
My favorite witch in cinematic history is the one played by Cloris Leachman in Len Talan’s sublime, woefully overlooked 1987 adaptation of the Grimm fairy tale, “Hansel and Gretel.” The film’s entire first half is one long, exquisite build-up to Leachman’s appearance, and it proves to be more than worth the wait. Her feigned grandmotherly kindness is hilariously kooky, as she makes a few Freudian slips about “cooking children—I mean, chicken.” But once Gretel creeps down the basement stairs to discover...

In the wake of revisionist takes on classic fairy tales, it was only a matter of time before someone came up with an approach that was tongue-in-cheek or so over the top it was going to be a wacky delight. I thought that was going to be Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters as the adult versions of the classic kids were first seen with crossbow and rifle, decked out in black leather and ready to kick ass. The trailers made it look like it could be tremendous fun and the cast of Jeremy Renner, Gemma Arterton, and Famke Janssen made it appealing.
Unfortunately, writer/director Tommy Wirkola couldn’t decide on a consistent tone for the film so sometimes it was a straight drama, sometimes a dark comedy, sometimes just boring. He’d been harboring the concept since 2007 and the pop culture zeitgeist caught up with him, allowing him to bring the notion to life.

Two of the prevailing winds in the projects being greenlit by Hollywood lately have been the re-imagining of classic children’s stories and the anachronistic mash-up film. After the success of Disney’s poop-fest Alice In Wonderland a few years back, studios have lined up to brush off the likes of Snow White and The Wizard of Oz to give them new life and a fresh revenue stream, while the trend set by Pride & Prejudice & Zombies, still in development for the big screen, has seen projects as diverse as Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and Cockneys vs Zombies get the go-ahead, hoping to tap into the perverse sense of watching two opposites come together. Given the title, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters could have been a glorious slice of cheesy goodness. But director Tommy Wirkola (best known to American audiences for Dead Snow) played it straight and, despite a few moments of humor early on, delivered a lazy, cliché-ridden product with a serious tone that sucks any sense of fun out of the film.
The story opens with a brief retelling of the classic fairy tale, but with one little twist: Before pushing the witch into her oven, young Hansel and Gretel discover they are immune to spells, at least those cast at them. And if you don't think that will be important later, it's obvious you missed the Harry Potter films.
After escaping from the Gingerbread House, the two become renowned witch hunters.

Frank Darabont's upcoming TV series "L.A. Noir" has been retitled "Lost Angels" according to io9. Darabont revealed the news during an interview, and gave an explanation as to why:
It was going to be called L.A. Noir, based on the book by John Buntin. But the video game company [Rockstar] with the video game called 'L.A. Noire' threatened to sue the s--t out of me, TNT, and every company that actually ever worked in Hollywood. They have the billions of dollars to back it up, apparently. So we’re changing the title, and I do believe the title is going to be 'Lost Angels'.
A rep for Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar Games' owners, tell Slashgear that "they only approached TNT in order to express concern over confusion between the properties, but say that they have never approached Darabont."
The show itself will be based on John Buntin’s book "L.

SlashFilm has some news regarding Frank Darabont's upcoming TNT show. Darabont leaving The Walking Dead may have been loathed by many at the time, but when we see how epic his new TV show looks they might be singing a different tune. Based on John Buntin's book, L.A. Noir: The Struggle For The Soul Of America’s Most Seductive City. Originally titled L.A. Noir, the show has now had to change its name due to the Rockstar Video Game titled L.A. Noire.
Now titled Lost Angels, the show will cover some of the same history covered by Gangster Squad. In addition to the name change, it looks like Simon Pegg will appear in a small role. Darabont recently spoke to io9 about the name change and Pegg's role in the show.

I’m not sure if you can really classify “Dead Snow” director Tommy Wirkola’s Hollywood debut, “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters” as a horror movie. Though I suppose it kinda is. I mean, there are witches and demons and such. Those are technically associated with horror movies, kinda the same way the “Twilight” movies are horror because of the vampires, though there’s nothing overly horrific about either franchises. Unless, of course, you find teen movie franchises terrifying. Anyways, now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, check out a handful of new images from Wirkola’s “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters”. It’s surprisingly not full of witches, go figure. 15 years after their traumatic gingerbread-house incident, siblings Hansel and Gretel have become a formidable team of bounty hunters who track and kill witches all over the world. Starring Jeremy Renner, Gemma Arterton, Famke Janssen,...

Here are some new images from the upcoming Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters movie, which is set to open in three weeks. As you’re going to see, this time we have a much, much better look at the leading duo Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton, but (yeah, I know you’re waiting for this one) on Famke Janssen‘s character Gretel and Pihla Viitala‘s Mina as well! Make sure you check them all out in the rest of this report and let us know what you think!
Written by Dante Harper and Tommy Wirkola, and directed by Wirkola, the movie takes place 15 years after the siblings’ incident at the gingerbread house. Hansel and Gretel are now specialized bounty hunters looking to put down the cackling black-hat set.
Jeremy Renner, Gemma Arterton, Famke Janssen, Pihla Viitala, Peter Stormare, Derek Mears, Thomas Mann all star in Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters,...

“Dead Snow” director Tommy Wirkola’s Hollywood debut, the big-budget fantasy “re-imagining” of “Hansel and Gretel” was supposed to come out this year, but it’s since been pushed back to January 2013. I’ll let you decide if that’s a hint of the film’s quality. I think it looks like a decent, entertaining flick, albeit one that probably costs more than it should. The film already looked goofy enough, and now this new Red Band trailer pretty much convinces you this thing is too goofy to take seriously. Exploding villagers, witches, and a lovely Gemma Arterton all await you by way of a new trailer and poster. In this dark spin on the fairy tale, siblings Hansel and Gretel are a formidable team of bounty hunters who track and kill witches all over the world. “Hansel and Gretel” stars Jeremy Renner, Gemma Arterton, Famke Janssen, Peter Stormare, Pihla Viitala,...

The three time Oscar nominated, Shawshank Redemption director and The Walking Dead series genius, Frank Darabont has found a solid home for his upcoming TV series L.A. Noir. Thanks to Deadline, we now know that it has been picked up for six episodes next year!
This is a project that I have been excited about since I first heard of it. Here's what the report goes on to say, giving some more details on the series...
TNT has given a series order to Frank Darabont’s period drama pilot L.A. Noir, which has been picked up for six episodes. Based on the book L.A. Noir: The Struggle for the Soul of America’s Most Seductive City by John Buntin, the project chronicles the battle between Los Angeles Police Chief William Parker and mobster Mickey Cohen, a one-time boxer who rose to the top of L.A.’s criminal world.

A diverse group of vacationers on a whale watching excursion are thrust into a nightmare beyond imagination when a freak accident kills their tour captain. Scared and hopeless, they easily accept rescue from a shady character with a fishing boat. He takes them back to his massive, isolated fishing ship where, along with his demented mother and brother, systematically begins slaughtering the helpless whale watchers.
Harpoon: Whale Watching Massacre can easily be added to the long list of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Hills Have Eyes clones that deal with a stranded or lost group of people encountering a homicidal family. While the setting of the film is the obvious element that makes it somewhat stand out, it also is simply a very good horror film that rises heads and shoulders about most films...

Damian Lewis.
Must I really say more? Ginger!
More than that? Look at the picture!
After his fantastic turn as Charlie Crews in the tragically canceled Life, and his sadistic Rizza in The Escapist, I've decided Lewis is the redhead for me.
Okay, okay, I'll pretend this has something to do with news. (Insert loud sigh here.) One of the Santana Brothers projects announced at Cannes is Man is Wolf to Man, is a story inspired by true events. Picture this: French Guyana, 1934. "A group of foreign prisoners escape from a penal colony only to be tracked down by a ruthless bounty hunter. The group's escape route out of the forest, Mal Paso San Pedro, which promises to lead them to salvation, is more of a moral test, where the characters betray each other along the way." The film starts shooting this fall and also stars Pihla Viitala and Vinzenz Kiefer.

How can you not be intrigued by a title like “Harpoon: Reykjavik Whale Watching Massacre”? It got me with “Harpoon”. Of course, a blurb calling it “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre on a whaler” didn’t hurt, either. I mean, how many slasher films have you seen set on a whaler? That’s a new one. Great harpooning fun is guaranteed when the film lands on DVD in the UK May 2010 courtesy of E1 Entertainment. Check out a teaser trailer below. An epic tale about a group of whale watchers, whose ship breaks down and they get picked up by a whale fisher vessel. The Fishbillies on the vessel has just gone bust, and everything goes out of control. Starring Pihla Viitala, Nae, Terence Anderson, Miranda Hennessy, Aymen Hamdouchi, Carlos Takeshi, Miwa Yanagizawa, Halldóra Geirharðsdóttir, Guðlaug Ólafsdóttir, Snorri Engilbertsson, Gunnar Hansen, and directed by Júlíus Kemp.

Cologne, Germany -- For this first time since its launch in 1997, next year's Shooting Stars event will not include an actor from either Germany, France or Spain.
The Shooting Stars jury on Wednesday announced the 10 young acting talents that will take part in the event, which runs Feb. 13-15 during the Berlin International Film Festival (Feb 11-21, 2010).
And, with the exception of British actor Edward Hogg ("White Lightnin") and Italy's Michele Riondino ("The Past is a Foreign Land") all of the talents come from smaller European countries.
Central and Eastern Europe is well represented, with four Shooting Stars including Poland's Agata Buzek ("Within the Whirlwind"), Czech actor Krystof Hadadek ("Three Seasons in Hell"), Romanian actor Dragos Bucur ("The Way Back) and Croatia's Zrinka Cvitesic, who stars in "Nat putu" the new film from Golden Bear winner Jasmila Zbanic ("Esma's Secret -- Grbavica") which is widely expected to compete in Berlin next year.
