Superstar actress Nayanthara is gearing up for her Tamil film ‘Annapoorani: The Goddess of Food’ with the release date officially confirmed as December 1. The actress took to her official X account and wrote: “‘Annapoorani’ releasing worldwide on Dec 1st.”
The movie’s production house also took to their X and wrote: “’Annapoorani’ is bringing you a feast and will see you in theatres on the 1st of December. Get Ready!”
The plot details are still not fully out, though the film’s team had recently dropped a teaser in which Nayanthara seemed to hail from an orthodox, upper caste household. A massive foodie and a dreamer, Nayanthara’s character seemingly leaves her old life behind to chase her dreams of most likely being a cook.
This is mainly alluded to by the scene of her character seemingly reading various cookbooks detailing various vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes, hiding them behind her academic books.

ReviewIf the film still strikes a chord somewhere despite all the bungling, it is because you know someone lived through this story. That alone makes it worth a watch.Sowmya RajendranScreengrabThe infamous spy case foisted on Isro’s star aerospace engineer Nambi Narayanan is a blot on the country’s history. Decades have passed since Nambi was arrested out of the blue, tortured, and declared a traitor for selling ‘rocket’ secrets to Pakistan. But the whys and hows of the case are still murky. Ahead of watching Rocketry: The Nambi Effect, directed by Madhavan who also plays the lead role, I read about the case once again to refresh my memory. How could a man who had been an integral part of Indian space science be branded so easily as a criminal? This is an intriguing and frightening real life story; a tale of incredible determination, hard work, deceit, betrayal...

Rocketry: The Nambi Effect
Starring R Madhavan,Simran
Directed by R Madhavan
Once in a while a film comes along to change lives. Tamil-Hindi star-actor R Madhavan’s directorial debut is no ordinary bio-pic. It takes us far away from the glorification of gangsters and the hagiographic tone of biopics on politicians, to give us a revelatory eye-opening story of a scientist who dedicated his life to enhancing India’s aerospace programme, only to be branded a spy.
What happened?
The film’s dramatic core is situated in the post-midpoint segment where we are made conversant with the stigmatization of Nambi Narayanan and his family. The scientist’s interrogation by a handful of seemingly ordinary investigators will send a chill up your smile. Every blow will make you flinch.
Writer-director Madhavan divides Nambi Narayanan’s story into two halves. In the first-half we see the young scientist’s stint in...

For acclaimed Indian actor R. Madhavan, making his directorial debut, “Rocketry: The Nambi Effect,” literally required an understanding of rocket science.
In addition to directing, Madhavan plays the role of Indian scientist, Nambi Narayanan, a former Indian Space Research Organization scientist and aerospace engineer known for developing efficient liquid fuel engines and who became embroiled in a spy scandal.
The director attached to the project had to drop out at the last minute due to scheduling conflicts and Madhavan who had a deep understanding of the script having written it himself after conversations with Narayanan had to take up the mantle.

NetflixHannah walks an unnerving tightrope of mixing intensely personal and traumatic experiences with brave insight.Sowmya RajendranScreenshot/NetflixHannah Gadsby's Netflix special Nanette is the kind of stand-up comedy that is rare to come by, with humour gleaming like a diamond and cutting just as hard. It's also a show where the comedian tells you that she wants to quit comedy. And she isn't joking. Hannah goes on to establish just why, walking this unnerving tightrope of mixing intensely personal and traumatic experiences with a brave insight that makes us laugh and think all at the same time. The stand-up comedian from Tasmania begins the routine speaking about her identity as a lesbian woman – coming out at a time and place where homophobia was in her face. She speaks of how the world around her reacted – with delightful narrations about her mother comparing her identity to that of a murderer's, her unwillingness to come out to her grandmother who wishes her a Mr Right just around the corner, she not being "lesbian enough” or "enthusiastic" enough about being lesbian. But these jokes, which set up the routine and make the audience feel settled, go beyond the usual personal comedy that stand-up artistes use. Hannah picks up from where she let off later in the show, making us sit up and take notice of why she's rethinking doing comedy. Her body language, light and easy, changes as the show progresses; her stance becomes more assertive, her face radiates pain. She even nearly cries on the show. But never for a moment does she go out of control, always bringing the audience back with a casually delivered line that offers comic relief. Her deconstruction of the gendered world around us – which begins with asking why we put pink headbands on bald babies, and an argument for why blue should really be a feminine colour – takes plenty of potshots at the straight, white man. And why not? For it is the straight, white man who has been deciding what the standard should be for everything, including stand-up. Hannah notes that she's done with self-deprecating humour because when a person from a marginalised community laughs at herself, it is not humility but humiliation, and she doesn't want to be part of that any more. Instead, Hannah uses her life experiences, including her degree in art history, and mental health issues, to punch upwards. I was reminded of Virginia Woolf's A Room of One's Own as I was laughing my head off at Hannah's take down of legendary artists and how they've painted women over the ages. In A Room of One's Own, Virginia Woolf, analyses how male writers have written women characters in a tone so deliciously funny and incisive, I was a changed person by the end of the book. I was only seventeen at the time but it had such a dramatic influence on the way I approached literature. Hannah's descriptions of the paintings we've been taught to revere gave me the same sense of sudden insight – why did I not think of this myself? Now that she says it, how absurd that I've thought these representations of women are great, when they are so unlike any woman I know? Is it art only because a white man painted it and other white men told us it was? Nanette is a textbook for those who want to write comedy, and Hannah is a bloody good teacher. She not only breaks down her own jokes, she also points out the problems with the joke as a medium. What should the role of the stand-up comedian be in a world where men like Trump are elected to power? Where sexual harassers like Woody Allen, Harvey Weinstein, Roman Polanski or Picasso are protected by their genius, while nobody gives a fig about their victims? On whom should the jokes be? Some may feel Nanette isn't funny enough, that Hannah speechifies too much and doesn't deliver on the promise of humour. That as the show draws to a close, it resembles spoken word poetry more than a stand-up special. But this is a comedian who takes her job so seriously that she's invested in questioning the fundamentals of it, reinventing the platform that it offers her. Her punchline 'Hindsight is a gift, stop wasting my time' is something I will keep revisiting, like a good joke that never grows old. Thank you, Hannah, for putting yourself under the spotlight, so the rest of us can find a way out from the darkness. Also read: Karthik Kumar's 'Blood Chutney: Comedy it may be, feminist it is not...

MollywoodThe film also stars Nadia in the lead role.Digital NativeAjoy Varma, a popular film editor, has two Hindi movies - Dus Tola and Srk – to his credit as director. The editor-turned-director announced last year that he would be directing a Malayalam film with Mohanlal in the lead. The shooting of this film titled Neerali commenced in January this year and was wrapped up within a short period of time. On directing a Malayalam film for the first time, Ajoy Varma had said in an interview to the Deccan Chronicle, “I have been exposed to Malayalam films since my childhood and coincidentally most of the movies that I saw were Mohanlal films. You can even say I was raised watching his films. Since Hindi was my comfort zone, obviously Bollywood became my place of work; I became an editor and directed two films.” The director went on to add that when writer Saju Thomas approached him with the script of Neerali, he immediately decided that it would be made into a film only if Mohanlal agreed to do the lead role. The film eventually materialised and is all set for release soon. On his meeting with the star, the director recalled, “There was a certain amount of anxiety about how he would react to the story but he responded in a very positive manner. So everything proceeded smoothly.” According to Ajoy Varma, Neerali is a thriller drama with some VFX effects. Yet another factor that makes it an important film is that it will have Mohanlal and Nadia sharing screen space after three decades. Bankrolled by Santhosh T. Kuruvilla, John Thomas and Mibu Jose Nettikadan under the banner Moon Shot Entertainments, the film is scheduled for release on July 12th. TollywoodThe film is let down by its unpolished second half.Krishna SripadaNational Award winner, Mohan Krishna Indraganti's Sammohanam is one of those movies that blur the line between realism and cinema. In the film, this is achieved by making one of the lead characters a cinema personality even within the movie. Aditi Rao Hydari’s Sameera is a gorgeous, but vulnerable heroine, who develops feelings for Vijay (Sudheer Babu), a cartoonist, who has a stereotypical hatred for cinema and people associated with it. Nevertheless, when a part of a movie is shot in Vijay’s house, Sameera seeks his help in correcting her Telugu diction, and the two hit it off straight away. Amidst a colourful palette of frames and a gently lilting Ost (all credits to the music director, Vivek Sagar of Pelli Choopulu fame), the two enjoy some poignantly romantic moments. While Vijay is enchanted by her long after the shooting is wrapped up, Sameera’s life hits a turmoil unbeknownst to Vijay. That is also when the good work of the first half is undone by a filmmaker who promises to offer something different, but probably ran out of resolve. Sammohanam is a story of two contrasting halves. The first half looks like it was made by an auteur, with a soft touch, the camera frames focussing ever so gently on Aditi’s outspoken eyes and Sudheer Babu’s diffident charm. The second half is rough, didactic and unpolished, lazy writing exchanging creativity for over-simplification. It's as if the gentle, soft-spoken young man who was too embarrassed to ask a star for a selfie with his friends, was suddenly reminded that this is a Telugu movie which needs a macho, egoistic, chauvinistic hero. A long narration by Sameera’s friend about her past – a bad execution largely because a sub-plot should be enacted, not narrated to an audience, who have invested so much in that tale – brings the story to a swift climax. Sammohanam, which means 'enchantment', is not over-the-top and almost takes your heart before falling apart and disappointing as it comes to a close. It is saved nevertheless, by three aspects – wonderful music, a tour de force performance by Naresh, and Aditi Rao’s mesmerising presence, which is accentuated by the exotic quality of her dialogues – talk about turning Telugu cinema’s general weakness, heroine unable to speak in proper diction, into a strength. Naresh is epic as the film-crazy father of Vijay, capable of acting and enacting with great charisma. Pavithra Lokesh as Vijay’s mother is understatedly brilliant and the couple pull off the set-piece of a family that could let a movie star be infatuated with them. Vinda’s cinematography brings out the right colours, pleasing and aesthetic at all times. Sammohanam could’ve been so much more if the acclaimed makers had showed a little more patience with the script, invested a few more intricacies into it. For now, it is a half-decent cup of coffee, without the aroma that brings the monsoons into your living room. KollywoodThe film is National Award winning director Thiagarajan Kumararaja’s second venture.Digital NativeDigital NativeThe National Award winning director Thiagarajan Kumararaja made his debut with the critically acclaimed Aaranya Kaandam, which went on to win several National Awards. After a gap of eight long years, his second film is set for release. Titled Super Deluxe, the film is scheduled to hit the silver screens this year. The shooting for this crime thriller has been completed and it has gone into post-production mode. Super Deluxe has a bevy of stars in the cast with Vijay Sethupathi, Fahadh Faasil, Samantha Akkineni, Mysskin and Ramya Krishnan in pivotal roles. In fact, it is an anthology of short films with each actor playing the central character in each segment. While Vijay Sethupathi will be seen as a transgender person in one segment, Fahadh Faasil will be seen playing an urban youth in another. Besides playing the lead role, Fahadh will also dub with his own voice. Samantha’s character is named Vaembu and her role is intriguing, from what we know. The film is bankrolled by Tyler Durden and Kino Fist in association with East West Dream Workz Entertainment & Alchemy Vision Workz. Touted to hit the silver screens on September 28, the film also stars Gayathrie and Bagavathi Perumal. While the film has been penned by the director Thiagarajan, the additional screenplay was written by Mysskin, Nalan Kumarasamy and Neelan K Sekar. Yuvan Shankar Raja has composed the music for the film and three popular cinematographers – PC Sreeram, Ps Vinod and Nirav Shah – have handled the camerawork. Sathyaraj Natarajan is the editor of Super Deluxe. Thiagarajan Kumararaja’s directorial debut Aaranya Kaandam went on to win several awards, including the National Film Award for Best First Film of a Director and the Best Editing, won by Praveen Kl and Nb Srikanth. With a bunch of talented technicians and actors being a part of Super Deluxe, it is easily one of the most anticipated films of the year. TollywoodIn the name of 'destiny', the director spins a mind-numbing storyline.Krishna SripadaFor starters, a correction, since the actors insisted on using the English word ‘destiny’ about 3398432189472 times to describe the tedious storyline of this so-called romantic-comedy – the word they were looking for is not 'destiny' but 'serendipity'. In short, Naa Nuvve is the poor man’s Serendipity for those who have watched the Hollywood version. Meera (Tamannaah) finds a book titled Love Signs (mushy gets murkily gooey) belonging to Varun’s (Kalyan Ram) grandma Kalyani, in which she finds his photo. Suddenly, luck starts smiling on her, making her believe he is her lucky charm. Before she knows it, and we recover from the cringey title of the book (we are still getting over Linda Goodman Sunsigns), she falls in love with him – he who has missed a flight to Seattle thrice, because destiny!! But, even when she tracks him down, he behaves in a way no man would usually behave when a beautiful woman comes knocking on his doors – acts busy and almost annoyingly snobbish. (Hello, reality check!) He doesn’t believe in destiny and so, sets some conditions, which, thanks to Meera’s belief in destiny, turn out to be true in the most outrageous fashion. Now that we’ve the serendipitous (read 'accidentally written in some railway station when the train was late and probably should’ve been dumped there itself') plot out of the way, let’s discuss some ground realities. Even if we set aside the fact that this movie has decided to be a fantasy ride, in which anything is possible, where are the moments and romance? The songs are an afterthought. The comedy is less screenplay and is more dependent on the image of the comedians helping out a director who seemed to have just one thought before beginning this movie – a radio programme for 36 hours in a railway station. That the heroine becomes an Rj after just freezing for most part of the audition and then blabbering a mushy, banal line about magic and love, (can’t quite remember the order of those words) is metaphorically the tale of the movie-makers – freeze, make something, freeze again. The best actor in the film was a coffee-seller who appeared for two seconds, selling coffee while singing. Jayendra Panchapakesan’s love story treats Hyderabad like a village of three by-lanes and five families. The heroine running into the same inane traffic cop is a classic case of this movie taking everything for granted in the name of serendipity-destiny. The only saving grace is that it is short, and sans the needless songs that are not memorable in any way, could have ended before the interval. In a parallel world, the leading pair would meet on Yahoo Messenger (throwback, yo), ask Asl, meet and live happily ever after! OpinionComedy should punch above, not below - otherwise, it becomes derision.Sowmya RajendranStand-up comedian Karthik Kumar's show was recently released on Amazon Prime. Within a few days, social media was full of screenshots from the show which suggested that much of the comedy was sexist in nature. The comedian, however, said that the screenshots had been leaked selectively and that the jokes were actually feminist. That intrigued me enough to watch 'Blood Chutney'. Admittedly, I'm wary of critiquing 'comedy' in general. Given that most 'comedy' is written and performed by men - whether onstage, in theatre or films, a lot of it tends to be misogynistic (among other things). It's also lapped up by people of all genders and anyone critiquing it is labelled as a person who cannot take a joke. It does not help that most people imagine feminists to be women with uncombed hair sucking on sour lemons all day. But I suppose that a comedian who has claimed that his material is feminist would not carry the same stereotype in his head. One hopes that he may believe I'm writing this piece comfortably lounging on my beanbag after a good breakfast, a pleasant smile on my face. The joke which has riled up most people is to do with actor Nalini. Karthik Kumar gets into that joke by speaking self-deprecatingly about his brief film career and how he retired from it. He goes on to say that other actors like 'Mike' Mohan and Ramarajan are probably still waiting to be called for a shoot. And then he says that Ramarajan must still have a cow at home and that he doesn't mean his wife Nalini. The comedian was right - the joke isn't complete at this point. The 'punch-line' of the joke is that no Indian woman can be called a cow because India is a country which respects cows. Karthik seems to believe with all sincerity that this is a pro-woman joke. Here is why it's not: A joke works when the audience and the comedian are on the same page about its premise. If the audience Karthik Kumar was speaking to didn't know who Nalini was and what she looked like, there is no joke. The lines deliberately use body shaming to set up the joke - but does the ending compensate for this? The ending is a jibe at right wing politics; it's also far from being an original thought. It does not take on the body shaming premise of the first part of the joke, it does not deflate it or make the audience think If they should have found that funny. There's another about Nayanthara which has led to similar outrage. After hailing her as the real superstar, Karthik goes on to say that since she has acted with 'Little Superstar' (Silambarasan) and 'Big Superstar' (Rajinikanth), she must be able to tell the difference in their sizes - there is a pregnant pause during which the audience is in splits - and he completes the line by saying 'in stature'. Again, what is the premise of this joke? It is the common belief that women in the film industry sleep around with their co-stars for work. What we're slowly getting around to call as 'sexual harassment at the workplace'. It's true that Karthik does not say the word 'penis' himself but that is what he wants the audience to think, that is where the humour is supposed to come from. And does the ending of that joke challenge any of these notions? It does not serve any purpose other than bullet-proofing the comedian. Throughout the show, Karthik mentions several women but All of them, except Jayalalithaa (who is no longer alive), in the context of their bodies or sex. At one point, he uses the word 'chinna veedu', a highly patriarchal and derogatory word if ever there was one, to describe a woman. There is an extended joke on Sunny Leone which has the comedian concluding that she's truly 'brave' to go naked at her job - but not before he has elaborately spoken about how he and several men in the audience have masturbated to Sunny Leone clips. As an aside, the appropriation of Sunny Leone by men wanting to prove their feminism would make a good topic for a PhD dissertation. The 'Suchi Leaks' scandal, during which nude photographs and videos allegedly belonging to celebrities were leaked from singer Suchitra's Twitter handle, also figures in the show. Suchitra is married to Karthik and the comedian makes a joke about how he was worried if the handle would leak one of their clips. His worry, he says, was what if it didn't go viral. As anyone who'd followed the scandal would remember, there was quite a bit of confusion on what exactly happened in those days. Although insinuations were made about male and female celebrities, it was the women concerned who faced the brunt of it. Singer Chinmayi, for instance, was hounded relentlessly on social media by men asking for her "rate". This, despite no video or picture of the singer being released as part of the leaks. The responsibility for what happened - which led to great mental trauma to the celebrities concerned - has not been taken up by anyone. No arrests have been made in the case. Is it fair to make this experience the premise of a joke? Can it be considered black humour when the comedian protects his interests and lays bare those of others? It's not that Karthik doesn't try - at one point, he says India would become a truly independent country only when we get a sex clip and we don't forward it to anyone. At another point he talks about how the sighting of a bra is considered to be akin to nuclear leakage from Kalpakkam, even though he objectifies women throughout the show. These 'right' sounding lines here and there come across as disclaimers to the sexism written all over the jokes. Comedy should punch above, not below. The more privileged a comedian, the more careful they have to be in writing comedy. Otherwise, comedy can slip into derision very easily. If you are an upper caste, upper class, cis-man in India, you are among the most privileged in society. It's important to be cognizant of this. It's important to ask who you are laughing at, who comes out looking bad at the end of your joke. If the answer is someone who is less privileged than you are - be it caste, class, race, gender or sexuality - then your humour is derisive and needs to be called out. Does this mean a privileged person cannot joke about anything? To be fair, Karthik has made himself the subject of his comedy quite a few times, especially when it comes to his film career. And there's plenty more material available for a privileged person, if only they would look inward more, within themselves and the communities they come from. A few days ago, a social media user had used Karthik's picture from the show which has the subtitle 'Any TamBrahms in the house?' (in itself, such war-cries are an upper caste privilege) and had written a satirical piece about the blatant assertions of caste identity that pass for humour in the Chennai stand-up comedy scene. Karthik had defended himself by saying he hadn't been casteist in the show. I watched it and he does ask the question to the audience, receiving several woots of approval. He then tells them not to woot so much because that's what's got them to the state they are in now (he gestures to suggest that they're somehow suppressed) - clearly pandering to the 'Holocaust' complex that is harboured by several Brahmins in Tamil Nadu, a state which has vibrant anti-caste politics. Calling this out, for example, would have made a great subject for edgy humour. Writing comedy - comedy which is funny, outrageous, and sensitive all at once - is not easy. It takes work but it's work that needs to be done. Because if all you want to do is make your audience laugh, you might as well get down and tickle them. (Views expressed are author's own)...

There aren’t many literary adaptations in Indian cinema these days. So an effort to render Nirmal Verma’s stories on celluloid is a welcome endeavor. However, it is also a tad too ambitious. The stories that are simple yet delve into the complexities of human relationships may appear visually-oriented, but to hold them together cinematically via an engaging narrative demands much more than an adept ensemble cast. This is where Chaurahen disappoints: it limits itself to a high-flown, philosophical montage of scenes where it is difficult to identify with or feel for any of the characters.
