With his latest film, Kinds Of Kindness, only hitting the Croisette at the Cannes Film Festival a few short days ago, Yorgos Lanthimos could've been forgiven for taking a breather to soak up some rays on the French Riviera — but that's just not the Poor Things filmmaker's style. As reported by THR, Lanthimos' next project, sci-fi comedy Bugonia, has been snapped up by Focus Features and Universal. And what's more, his Kinds Of Kindness leads Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons are set to star.
As we shared back in February, Lanthimos' next film will be an English-language remake of Joon-Hwan Jang's 2003 South Korean sci-fi comedy Save The Green Planet. The original movie's barmy plot follows a conspiracy-obsessed man who becomes convinced that a number of his homeland's top brass are secretly reptilian alien invaders bent on Earth's destruction, going so far as to abduct several of them in an...

Irish production company Element Pictures is firing on all cylinders, as company partners Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe bring three very different pictures to Cannes.
The Yorgos Lanthimos producers are still smiling after a nail-biter Oscar night that yielded four wins for “Poor Things,” including Best Actress for Emma Stone. She also stars in all three episodes in Lanthimos’ follow-up, the $15-million black comedy “Kinds of Kindness” along with returning co-stars Willem Dafoe and Margaret Qualley and Lanthimos newbie Jesse Plemons, who leads the first two episodes. He gets to show what he can do throughout; Stone delivers an emotional performance in the ultimate story.
Each of the stories features the same actors, but with different emphasis. Lanthimos had his eye on Plemons for a while, said Lowe on Zoom, and finally found a film for him: “When the right thing comes along, Yorgos pounces. He’s specific about casting.

This isn't one to file under Most Surprising News Ever, but it appears that star Emma Stone and director Yorgos Lanthimos are looking to get the filmmaking band together again. Following the success of The Favourite and Poor Things, they already have one more film together under their belts via anthology Kinds Of Kindness, but with news that Lanthimos is looking at remaking South Korean fantasy comedy Save The Green Planet as his next film, Stone is in talks to join him in that endeavor as well.
The original, directed by Joon-Hwan Jang and released in 2003, is about Lee Byeong-gu (Shin Ha-kyun), who dives deep into conspiracy theories and starts to suspect that a number of political and big business types are secretly aliens, the reptilian first wave for an invasion of Earth. When he spirits some away to an underground command centre to torture information from them, he hits the Most Wanted list.

We learned just yesterday that Yorgos Lanthimos (Poor Things) is on board to direct an English-language remake of 2003’s Korean genre-bender Save the Green Planet!, which has Ari Aster (Hereditary, Midsommar) attached to produce. Variety now reports this afternoon that Emma Stone (Poor Things) is in talks to reunite with Lanthimos on the film.
“Stone would most likely play a supporting role,” Variety notes in their report.
Emma Stone just secured an Oscar nomination for her performance in Lanthimos’ Poor Things, and they had previously worked together on The Favourite back in 2018.
Variety details, “Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe at Element Pictures will produce the movie alongside Ari Aster’s Square Peg and Cj Enm (previously named Cj Entertainment).”
Joon-hwan Jang wrote and directed the original movie.
In the film, “Byeong-gu believes Earth is on the verge of an alien invasion and that he’s the only one who can save it.

Almost four years have gone by since it was announced that Cj Enm, the production company behind Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite, was teaming with Ari Aster’s Square Peg to produce an English language remake of the 2003 South Korean cult film Save the Green Planet. The original film was directed by Joon-hwan Jang, and at the time it was said that Jang would be at the helm of the new take on the concept as well. But now Variety reports that the project has a new director: Yorgos Lanthimos, whose film Poor Things is nominated for 11 Oscars and just won five BAFTAs. With Lanthimos signed on, the Save the Green Planet remake is now expected to head into production this summer, with filming locations in New York and the U.K.

Given that he's largely stuck to wildly original material, the notion of Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos pivoting to a remake is an intriguing one, despite the alarm bells it might set howling online. According to Variety, the director is now aboard a new version of South Korean fantasy comedy Save The Green Planet.
Director Joon-Hwan Jang's 2003 debut follows Lee Byeong-gu (Shin Ha-kyun), who comes to believe that a number of Korean leaders and top business types are secretly reptilian aliens driving an invasion of his beloved planet Earth. When he abducts several and absconds with them to a basement command centre to start prying information from their scaly brains, the authorities hire a skilled private detective to track him and his victims down. All the while, Byeong-gu's devoted girlfriend aids his mission, even as she worries his crusade is born out of his traumatic childhood.

Update: As we predicted, Emma Stone will reunite with Yorgo Lanthimos for the film in a supporting role, Variety reports.
Following up Poor Things, Yorgos Lanthimos already has another film in the can with Poor Things“>Kind of Kindness, and now he’s already set his next feature. The Greek filmmaker will be helming an English-language remake of the Korean cult classic Save the Green Planet, backed by Ari Aster’s Square Peg, Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe at Element Pictures, and Cj Enm, Variety reports.
The 2003 original, directed by Joon-hwan Jang (who was originally attached to helm this new version), is a black comedy meets sci-fi thriller. Lanthimos’ version, based on a script by Will Tracy (Succession), will kick off production in U.K. and New York this summer, so we can expect a 2025 release, which would mark three consecutive features from the director in a row. Korean classic “Save the Green Planet!” is getting an English-language remake from Cj Entertainment, the studio behind the Oscar-winning “Parasite.”

Producers include Francis Chung, Aster, and Knudsen under their Square Peg production banner.
“One thing we learned from our success with ‘Parasite’ is that audiences globally are excited to see genre-bending films with big themes,” Lee said in a statement. “Jang is a master of this in his own right, and we’re so glad to be working alongside Ari, Lars, and Will to help translate what made the original so special to an English language version that feels relevant to what’s going on today.”

While we don’t yet know what film Ari Aster will be making as his Midsommar follow-up, he’s now come aboard a new project: a remake of one of his favorite films of all-time. The Hereditary director recently shared his love for the Korean cult classic Save the Green Planet! and he’s now going to back an English-language version alongside his producing partner Lars Knudsen and Cj Entertainment.
Directed by Joon-hwan Jang, who will return to helm this new version based on a script by Will Tracy (Succession), the 2003 original is a black comedy meets sci-fi thriller, and a whole lot more. We imagine the success and worldwide embrace of Parasite had a bit to do with these happenings, and hopefully this material will translate well to the world of Hollywood. See the summary below.

A number of Sound On Sight editors and contributors are geographically fortunate enough to make the Fantasia Film Festival an annual must-attend event. I have never been to the festival, but have followed it from afar since it landed on my radar years ago when a well-received short film I had a major acting role in called My Sweet Satan, played there.
This year’s lineup of films strikes me as substantially more intriguing than the programs of the last couple of years. Given Fantasia’s staggering breadth of programming spread across multiple weeks, the challenge is in trying to narrow a ‘most anticipated’ list down to just five films. My picks, in alphabetical order, are as follows.
