Lars Ulrich was only 19 when Metallica released their speed limit–defying debut, Kill ‘Em All, in 1983. On each successive album, the metal musicians waited for the mainstream to come to them. Then, their 1991 “Black Album” became the bestselling album of the past three decades thanks to songs like “Enter Sandman” and “Nothing Else Matters.” Every album they’ve put out since has gone to Number One or Two, and their Eighties anthem “Master of Puppets” recently enjoyed a renaissance thanks to Stranger Things.

Happy Birthday, Bugs Bunny!
The world’s favorite rabbit turns 75 this month: July 27, 1940, saw the debut of the cotton-tailed character’s first cartoon short “Wild Hare,” directed by Tex Avery.
There won’t be much hoopla to celebrate, because Warner Bros. doesn’t observe the birthdays of animated characters. And there’s some logic to that, especially in Mr. Bunny’s case.
There had been earlier variations: A wisecracking rabbit, voiced by Mel Blanc, debuted in the 1938 “Porky’s Hare Hunt” but the speech patterns and look were very different. In the next few years, WB’s Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies cartoons featured other rabbits.
But the 1940 “Wild Hare” was the first one where Bugs looked like himself, sounded like himself and, significantly, it was the first time he uttered the immortal words “What’s up, Doc?”
Don’t be misled by those earlier rabbits. On Sept. 10, 1940, Variety ran...

Daniel Goldberg, the co-screenwriter of “Stripes” and producer of feature comedies like “Space Jam,” “Old School” and the “Hangover” trilogy, died Wednesday at age 74.
A frequent collaborator of directors Ivan Reitman and Todd Phillips and actor Bill Murray, who in addition to “Stripes” starred in the Goldberg co-penned “Meatballs,” Goldberg is survived by his wife, fellow Canadian film producer Ilona Herzberg, and his brother, “Deuce Bigalow” screenwriter Harris Goldberg. Per media reports, no cause of death was made public.
In a tribute for Deadline published Wednesday, Ivan Reitman’s son, filmmaker Jason Reitman, remembered Goldberg as “one of the kindest and most gentle souls I’ve ever known.”
Goldberg and Reitman first met in 1966 at McMaster University, where they went on to make several short films together (many of which starred a young “Schitt’s Creek” Emmy winner Eugene Levy) and cofounded a film society — not without kicking up some controversy,...

If there was anything that separated Robin Williams from the rest of his comic peers, it was energy. When that man was on stage, he had a boundless mania that was like the human embodiment of the Tasmanian Devil from "Looney Tunes." His mind and mouth would run a mile a minute, and a lot of the time, he was making up whatever he was doing on the spot. When he maneuvered over to television, he found the perfect outlet for that in Mork, the alien on Earth who started off on "Happy Days" and eventually his own sitcom "Mork & Mindy." Not only did him being an alien allow Williams to completely let loose, he was playing to a live studio audience. For a comic, laughter is currency, and Robin Williams knew how to rake it in under those conditions.

Sunday’s Super Bowl battle between the Kansas City Chiefs’ hot-shot Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady, the NFL’s winningest quarterback of all time, highlights the wave of young QBs who are bringing sizzle to the gridiron and grabbing the attention of Madison Avenue and Hollywood.
Mahomes, 25, is going for his second consecutive Super Bowl trophy with the Chiefs. That has set up a generational test of wills between the Chiefs star and Brady, who is going for his seventh Super Bowl ring and his first with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Brady is facing perennial retirement rumors, even as he up-ends NFL convention by playing a Super Bowl-caliber level game at the age of 43.
Mahomes, who signed a whopping $450 million 10-year contract with the Chiefs last year, and the other QBs are coming on strong as other veteran NFL stars are also likely to leave the field soon, including New...

The NFL is canceling its annual Hall of Fame Game, which this year was to feature the Dallas Cowboys against the Pittsburgh Steelers on August 6 on NBC. The traditionally preseason opener in Canton, Ohio, the home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, is played ahead of the hall’s induction ceremony, which has now been postponed.
Both events were scrubbed because of concerns over the coronavirus pandemic, according to a report on the league’s website. The NFL is still planning a full season that would start September 10; both the Cowboys and Steelers would have started training camps early due to the game but now are expected to convene with the rest of the teams at the end of July.
The league has been adamant that its 2020 season would begin on time. It held its draft virtually earlier this year. It’s unclear whether today’s decision could impact the currently planned four-week preseason.

Tracee Ellis Ross had to leave the set of “Black-ish” for a project so secret she wasn’t sure she could even tell her co-star on the show, Anthony Anderson. On Sunday, it won’t be a secret anymore.
Ross is one of several handfuls of celebrities scheduled to appear in the big-budget commercials that will run during Fox’s broadcast of Super Bowl Liv. The job offers a distinct thrill, but brings with it some very unique wrinkles.
Super Bowl ads “stand out through time, and they become little pieces of art,” says Ross in an interview. She will appear with Bryan Cranston in a remake of the 1980 Stanley Kubrick film “The Shining” that has been turned into a pitch on behalf of PepsiCo’s Mountain Dew. “A Super Bowl commercial is like the Olympics of commercials,” she adds.

It seems like I write this at least once or twice a year, but Disney is poised to have another big hit on their hands. They continually churn out enjoyable fare, especially with their animated musical offerings. On Wednesday, their latest hits in Moana, which very much feels like it’s a successor to Frozen. Featuring songs from Lin-Manuel Miranda and a winning bit of voice work from Dwayne Johnson, it’s poised to be a big deal during Thanksgiving. Family fare always has a leg up, and this will be no exception. It’s going to contend for awards, that’s for sure, but it will also make a mint at the box office first, and that never hurts. Audiences are in for a treat. The movie is essentially standard issue Disney princess stuff, though there’s a bit of tinkering with that premise. Young Moana (Auli’i Cravalho...

Now – more then ever – maturing young girls need positive female heroes to idolize, and with that perspective in mind, Moana summons an epic adventure primed to bolster the independent pride of future “nasty women” everywhere. This should come as no shock – Disney has been nurturing strong-willed princesses since cartoons were invented (figure of speech) – but Moana‘s importance shouldn’t be shrugged off (nor is she a princess, she’d remark).
Lin-Manuel Miranda brings island spirit to drum-beating musical numbers that herald the exuberance of life’s unexpected journeys, pushing young minds and hearts to follow passion, not practicality. Audiences of all genders have yet another animated Disney dazzler to embrace here, but Moana speaks specifically to a gender that faces preconceived barriers, and with enough strength to break them down.

Last year, Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson received 96 passes for 1,681 yards and scored 16 touchdowns, this in the eyes of game developer EA, earned him a place on the cover of this years’ version of Madden NFL. The Madden franchise has a bad history concerning the players they place on the cover of their game, a set of unfortunate mishaps dubbed ‘the Madden curse’.
The Madden curse is a superstition which many believe affects the career of those who go on the cover, either through injury or a shocking season performance. It started way back in 1999, when EA decided that in order to reach out to gamers in the Pal regions they would replace John Madden who lends his name to the brand, with a player. The San Diego Padres drafted a kind of random college quarterback, Toledo's Terrance Owens, with their final selection in the recent Mlb draft - even though Owens isn't a baseball player. Owens hasn't played the sport since his first year of high school, in fact.
He told the Padres thanks, but no thanks, but it got my mind spinning. Great American athletes are not flocking to the game of baseball like they have in the past. African Americans in particular are abandoning baseball at a young age in favor of basketball and football, and the number of blacks in baseball has plunged to post-integration lows.
But I've always fantasized (and I mean that entirely non-sexually) about how awesome it would have been to see Allen Iverson on a ball diamond (he was a hell of a high school Qb an Db on the gridiron), and I've always thought that if Michael Vick weren't left-handed,...

I know close to nothing about sports (except when I throw a balled-up piece of paper into the trashcan and know that it’s customary to shout “Kobe!” while doing so). But one of the few things I do know is the name Eli Manning. After all, here’s an athlete who has managed one of the rarest of feats in pop culture: being so high-profile in the zeitgeist that not only does an athletics layman like myself know his name, but he gets to step onto the Grand Central set and host Saturday Night Live.
So how did the...

While Mark Romanek's next directorial effort "Cinderella" continues to develop, he's been busy keeping his skills honed in the commercial world. Last year he directed that pretty weird Kia ad with the dancing hamsters, but he's back with something a bit more his flavor and has brought some pretty solid talent with him to assist.
Romanek has delivered a new ad for Nike Football with Kirk Baxter -- who won Oscars for editing David Fincher's "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" and "The Social Network" -- cutting it together. Featuring a brace of NFL stars including Troy Polamalu, Calvin Johnson, Darrelle Revis, LeSean McCoy, Ndamukong Suh, Alex Smith, Larry Fitzgerald and Marshawn Lynch, the spot emphasizes how the game has changed from the one your Dad used to watch, falling asleep on the couch on Sunday afternoons. Yesterday I brought you the music videos of David Fincher and today I bring you his commercials. With a strong visual eye and an occasionally dark, yet playful, sense of humor, Fincher has directed commercials for companies such as Nike, Budweiser, Heineken, Coca-Cola, Apple, Motorola, Adidas, Colt 45, Levi's, At&T and Hp and in those commercials he's featured stars such as Brad Pitt, a very young Angelina Jolie, the late Dennis Hopper, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, Claire Forlani, Billy Dee Williams as well as sports stars such as Charles Barkley, Michael Vick, Terrell Owens, Adrian Peterson, Ladainian Tomlinson, Troy Polamalu, Shawne Merriman and Steven Jackson. Over the next four pages I have gathered a collection of 23 of Fincher's commercials for you to preview and I'm sure you'll recognize many and yet will have never realized they were directed by the man behind Seven, Fight Club, Zodiac and his latest effort,...

Pittsburgh Steelers' safety Troy Polamalu is pretty good at scaring NFL quarterback. But the future Hall of Famer recently decided to frighten some of his fans at Madame Tussauds Wax Museum in Hollywood.
The safety and Super Bowl champ pretended to be a wax figure while tourists posed for pictures with him. But the fun starts when he Polamalu starts moving and the fans run for cover.

As production on the 2012 Batman flick wraps in the Steel City, we detail the five coolest looks to hit the Net.

On the set of "Dark Knight Rises" in Pittsburgh
In late May, to mark the start of "Dark Knight Rises" production in Pittsburgh, we got our first look at the newest villain to face off against Batman: Tom Hardy as the broad-backed, rubber-face-mask-rocking Bane. That juicy, studio-approved first look, it turned out, was a harbinger of spoiler-y sneak peeks to come.
Over the next three months, we feasted our eyes upon villains and vehicles and massive action set pieces and more. The free-for-all, though, is probably at an end, as "Dark Knight Rises" production in Pittsburgh has wrapped ahead of a shift to Los Angeles, where on-set security is likely to be significantly tighter. So as we bid goodbye to Batman's adventures in the Steel City,...

From MTV News: The NFL lockout might be over, but life for the Pittsburgh Steelers was certainly not back to usual on Saturday, when Christopher Nolan's "Dark Knight Rises" swooped into Heinz Field and recast the team as the Gotham Rogues.
Clad in familiar black-and-gold uniforms, the Steelers-turned-Rogues included Ben Roethlisberger, Hines Ward, Willie Colon, Troy Polamalu and Heath Miller, according to multiple local reports. Former Steelers coach Bill Cowher returned to the sideline to play the Rogues' coach. Cowher and crew were joined by more than 10,000 extras, bussed in to film a fictional game between the Rogues and the Rapid City Monuments.
The shoot itself dives into some spoilery territory, so if you'd like to remain blissfully unaware of the goings-on in Gotham during "Dark Knight Rises," in which Batman faces off against Bane, turn back now!

It was a big weekend at Heinz Field, home of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Christopher Nolan used the stadium to film an important scene in “The Dark Knight Rises,” and more than a few people were there, including some very famous ones.
According to multiple local reports, more than 10,000 people were in the scene, making noise for the fictional gridiron squad, the Gotham Rogues. In addition to these extras, real players from the Pittsburgh Steelers got in on the action, including Hines Ward, Willie Colon, Ben Roethlisberger, Heath Miller, Ike Taylor, Aaron Smith, Ryan Clark, Troy Polamalu, and Brett Keisel; rather than being extras in the stadium, they were extras for the Rogues. Bill Cower, a former coach of the Steelers, was also there to play the coach. Even Pittsburgh mayor Luke Ravenstahl got involved.
There was also a part where Tom Hardy, playing Bane, got up and spoke to the crowd.

"The Dark Knight Rises" is going to film a scene with members of the Pittsburgh Steelers professional football team. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has revealed that he and about a dozen of his teammates are billed to join the shooting on Saturday morning, August 6 at Heinz Field.
Sharing what he knows about the scene, Roethlisberger said, "From what I've heard, it's going to be like a pre-game, warming-up type thing. I don't know the whole concept. There's a Gotham team, a football game. We'll be wearing uniforms." Among his teammates who will take part in the filming are Hines Ward, Willie Colon, Maurkice Pouncey, Mike Wallace, Heath Miller, Aaron Smith, Ryan Clark, Troy Polamalu, James Farrior and Casey Hampton.
"I'm kind of getting everybody together," Roethlisberger added when admitting that he is excited to be part of the film. "I heard it's going to be a neat thing at the stadium.

Filming continues on the overly-hyped, news-worthy final Batman film – The Dark Knight Rises – for Christopher Nolan in Pittsburgh, and they’re getting set up at Heinz Field this weekend for a scene involving Batman, Bane, and a Gotham football team (probably Bane interrupting a game in progress for added anarchy).
With that, and because they need some football professionals, the film will be using the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger and Hines Ward, Willie Colon, Maurkice Pouncey, Mike Wallace, Heath Miller, Aaron Smith, Ryan Clark, Troy Polamalu, James Farrior and Casey Hampton.
Says Big Ben, “I heard it’s going to be a neat thing at the stadium. I don’t think it will be a big part, it’s not like we’re chasing Batman down or anything. From what I’ve heard, it’s going to be like a pre-game, warming-up type thing. I don’t know the whole concept.

Turns out Tom Hardy's Bane has some competition for the biggest, baddest guy in the next Batman film, "The Dark Knight Rises."
A number of star players on the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers will take the field as extras in Christopher Nolan's epic caped crusader finale, in a scene at their home stadium, Heinz Field. The film is using Pittsburgh as a stand-in for Gotham, and the a game featuring city's fictional football team plays into the storyline.
"I'm kind of getting everybody together," quarterback Roethlisberger told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "I heard it's going to be a neat thing at the stadium. I don't think it will be a big part, it's not like we're chasing Batman down or anything."
Amongst the players joining Roethlisberger will be stars Troy Polamalu, James Farrior and Hines Ward. Aside from the convenient location, Thomas Tull, one of the team's owners, is executive producing the film.

In casting call news there was a mention of "special" player(s) in the football scene and that the extras were in for a treat. Well they weren't lying! I'll assume most of the extras will be diehard Steeler fans and they'll get to see their favorite star quarterback suiting up. Super Bowl champion quarterback Ben Roethlisberger who would probably be under Batman's radar for perving on drunk chicks, will actually be helping the Dark Knight with a key scene. As I mentioned yesterday rumors are spreading that this football scene will have an explosive opening kickoff. Also on hand will be: Hines Ward (Dancing with the Stars), Willie Colon, Maurkice Pouncey, Mike Wallace, Heath Miller, Aaron Smith, Ryan Clark, Troy Polamalu, James Farrior and Casey Hampton. Roethlisberger and about a dozen of his veteran teammates will take part in the filming of Dark Knight Rises playing -- what else?...

Hopefully, no one misinterpreted this post as just some fun, throwaway gimmicky thing exploring humorous pop culture Super Bowl bets, and instead, you all took it super literally (as intended) and went out and laid down tens of thousands of dollars crucial to your family’s survival on wacky wagers at my recommendation (Now who’s laughing at these wagers, people in the first half of this sentence? Your starving children aren’t, that’s who. I sure showed…someone somewhere, I forget). With the Super Bowl over, it’s time to re-explore the Super Bowl Prop Bets and see how we did.
