Lance Bangs, who’s directed music videos for the likes of Nirvana, Sting and Sonic Youth, has added a new band to his list of collaborators: Drive-By Truckers. The politically charged video for “Surrender Under Protest” is out now and features a performance from the Southern rock group alongside footage from Black Lives Matter protests. Watch it below.

“I’ve long been a fan of Lance’s work and instinctively knew he would know exactly the perfect visual element for this song,” Patterson Hood, who sings and plays guitar in the group, told Pitchfork of the collaboration. “Just like the song encapsulates a period of unrest and change for America, its accompanying video brings that message to life with images of a divided, but still united nation.”

For six years, Jason Isbell was drunk at every show he played. During his tenure with beloved Southern rockers Drive-By Truckers, Isbell planned his drinking to keep him on his feet for the duration of the band's marathon live shows - barely. "I had it timed where, by the very end of the show, I'd done just about all I could do standing up," he told NPR in 2013. "I knew I needed two or three before I went on, and then during the show, we'd just pass a bottle around between the band." The routine totaled about a fifth of Jack Daniels per show.

Well, hello there baby, you look so beautiful," Walton Goggins purrs, leaning forward and suddenly going into full-on loverman mode. "Look at you, all done up in that white dress and those white shoes. This is a proper get-up, my dear. You look hot!" The 44-year-old actor is sitting in a downtown Manhattan restaurant, his face hovering inches away from a plate of Burrata; he was sold on the appetizer after being told it's "like Mozzarella's sexier cousin," so he's now whispering sweet nothings at the cheese with an intensity and seductiveness that's almost frightening.

Hey, music fans and friends, it's time once again to share my favorite music from 2015.
The songs on my year-end list are not what I consider true "singles" but rather my favorite 25 songs from 2015. I've not heard all the amazing music released this past year, but I do consume a healthy dose of tunes every single day. Below are 13 of those songs with Youtube links if you can't access my Spotify list. Let's proceed, shall we?
1. "Chateau Lobby #4 (in C for Two Virgins)" - Father John Misty - I Love You Honeybear
Former Fleet Foxes drummer Josh Tillman has quickly become my favorite young singer-songwriter. His detail to imagery in both audio and album artwork have very few peers, too. (See image above.)
2. "Rose Mary y Yo" - Carlos Timón - Solar Rapé
Some have said, me included, that this music spins like a Spanish version of Belle & Sebastian meets Jobim!

When it came time to write and record his fifth solo album, 36-year-old alt-country singer-songwriter Jason Isbell had an unenviable task: following up his fourth album, 2013's Southeastern, which intimately chronicled his journey to sobriety and swept the 2014 Americana Music Awards, winning Artist of the Year, Album of the Year, and Song of the Year. It was a tall order, but the erstwhile Drive-By Truckers guitarist delivered, producing an album, Something More Than Free, that vaulted to No. 1 on the Billboard country music chart and No. 6 on the Billboard Top 200 albums chart the week after its July 17 release. We grabbed time with Isbell to discuss his approach to the new record, the evolving country scene in Nashville, and whether he feels an obligation to address racial issues in his songwriting. There are clear musical and thematic connections between Something More Than Free and your last album,...

The Voice is known for sometimes featuring established musicians on its competition show (as opposed to America Idol, which is focused on musicians without record deals), but that doesn't mean every artist is willing to do it. Award-winning singer-songwriter Jason Isbell shared a snapshot of an email he got from an alleged talent producer for The Voice asking the musician to audition for a spot on the show. Jason wrote, "Excerpt from Real email I received today from a producer on The Voice. He's been researching online." A rash of some cool new music to share with y'all. First up is the Nola-based Luke Winslow-King's live take on his bluesy train chugger "Travelin' Myself" from his album Everlasting Arms. Roots-rockin' Americana that is authentic, passionate, poignant, infectious snapshots of life in this big ol' country. One of my favorite albums of the year. Out now on Bloodshot Records.
José González is easily one of my favorite folk artists of the past several decades. His simple yet evocative songs resonate with me long after the songs have faded. His latest is no different. "Every Age," the Swede's first single from his first album in seven years, Vestiges & Claws (Mute) [to be released February 17th, 2015], is available for purchase from your favorite digital music provider. The amazing aerial video was directed by Simon Morris and Chris Higham for global collective Eyes In Space, "whose aim is to mesh artistic experiment with scientific innovation to open new worlds.

Bringing his own unique flavor of southern rock to the table, Benjamin Booker is quickly making a name for himself with an opening slot on Jack White’s tour and a well-received debut album.
The “Violent Shiver” rocker is featured in the latest edition of GQ magazine, and therein he discusses his special sound- "I guess I would call my music blues punk. There's a lot of influences. When I was making the record, I was listening to a lot of things, from TV on the Radio to the Carter Family. I was all over the place."
Booker also has a reputation for wearing girls’ clothes- "I hung out with this girl while I opened for Drive-By Truckers last year. The first night, I didn't go home, so I borrowed clothes from her. I guess I borrow clothes from girls a lot."
And of course, Benjamin has plenty of love for New Orleans,...

The Bonnaroo Music Festival, which runs for four days in Manchester Tenn., recently announced their 2014 lineup.
Headlining the 13th annual Bonnaroo will be Elton John, Kanye West, Jack White, Lionel Richie, Vampire Weekend, The Avett Brothers, Phoenix, Skrillex, Arctic Monkeys, Frank Ocean and The Flaming Lips.
Also heading to the Great Stage Park this summer will be Neutral Milk Hotel, Wiz Khalifa, Cut Copy, The Head and the Heart, Lauryn Hill, Broken Bells, Ice Cube, Slightly Stoopid, Fitz and The Tantrums, Cake, Janelle Monae, Amos Lee and John Butler Trio.
West was a surprise choice for the festival, which hasn’t had the rapper in their lineup since 2008 when he walked onto the stage nearly two hours after his scheduled set time. Though he tried to blame Pearl Jam’s extended set, the crowd united in booing him.

My alienation from current pop is almost complete; the only 2013 Top 40 material I enjoyed enough to play repeatedly was Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, from an album released in 2012. So I am officially a cranky old fart. But there are more and more of us, and maybe fellow COFs will find this list useful. By the way, crossing that border of alienation made me think more than ever that saying my lists are of the "best" albums is nearly absurd, hence the new headline.
1. Wire: Change Becomes Us (Pink Flag)
This is my favorite Wire of this century thanks to more emphasis on Colin Newman's brooding. When allied to their chugging motorik beats, it's irresistible to me. There are still some uptempo burners that recall their beginnings in punk, and some more whimsical though still musically solid songs, but it's Newman's dark musings that made me play this repeatedly.

Nick Lowe Lincoln Center, NYC 10 August 2013
A couple months ago, I noticed that Glen Tilbrook of Squeeze and Nick Lowe would both be performing at the Boulton Center in Bay Shore, New York, in August. I can’t go to every show that comes down the pike and some times I have to make tough decisions. Having seen Nick a couple years ago at Town Hall and not having seen Tilbrook (or Squeeze) in five or six years, I suggested to my wife Linda that we opt for the Tilbrook show -- very reluctantly passing on Nick. It wasn’t long before something began to gnaw at me. I had to see Nick again. I noticed that he had a few other gigs lined up in the area and we decided that we would catch him at the Out of Doors at Lincoln Center series on August 10. A schedule of...

Johnny Cash: Blood, Sweat and Tears (Columbia)
Some of Cash's '60s concept albums were burdened with much too talking between tracks; here the tribute to the American working man gets to mostly stand alone on its musical merits, and shines. Notably, it incluces the top version of the traditional "John Henry"” about the most legendarily heroic working man ever, and the version of "Casey Jones" here is classic as well. Politically and psychologically, Cash was the perfect man for this job.
1968
Byrds: Notorious Byrd Brothers (Columbia)
Sometimes transitional albums, confusing listeners expecting a group's earlier style, are underrated. Not so with this classic. It's true that it didn't sell as well as earlier Byrds LPs, nor did the single from the album chart very high, but for decades Notorious Byrd Brothers has been widely revered, and not just by fans; some critics have even anointed it as the band's best album.

The Democrats may have a more party-hardy reputation than the Republicans, but that doesn’t mean the right isn’t planning to get down with some celebs this week. Speaking from experience (I covered both conventions in 2008), I’d like to note that regardless of the celebrity special guest performing — be it Will.i.am or Willie Nelson — convention parties are pretty boring compared to Oscar parties or SXSW parties, or even say, your niece’s third birthday party. Most of the attendees at the DNC and Rnc alike are delegates in uncomfortable suits, dancing uncomfortably to some band they’ve never heard of.

I've had someone point out that my time for "WWE: Raw" is apparently inaccurate for wherever they are twice now. I'd like to apologize, first of all, in case this individual missed the first hour of "Raw" when all the important plot lines are established and thus spent the second hour wondering why all these greasy men in swim trunks were throwing each other around the ring. I know that it's hard to follow the subtleties of such a show without all the information presented up front. However, I'd also like to remind all of you that whatever I put here is subject to local scheduling abnormalities and time zone weirdness. Most of the shows I list are listed by their Eastern time slots, so if you aren't blessed enough to live in the correct time zone then please always double check with a local source for anything you really don't want to miss.

For Jason Isbell fans who have missed the grit and storytelling acumen the singer-songwriter once brought to Drive-By Truckers, much of his Here We Rest will be as welcome as a long-lost childhood buddy turning up late one night with a cold six-pack. On “Codeine,” a sad-eyed country shuffle about a drugged-out barfly, Isbell sketches out the wreckage scattered throughout a misbegotten romantic relationship with some well-chosen details: There’s the woman with eyes “big as stars, when I saw you behind the bar,” the worried lover who wishes “we knew how to fight but we don’t,” and the ...

Let's kick things off with someone who's familair with disappointment, that being the natural state of the music fan. I basically never have anything good to say about Tuesdays. They're when you realize that all your big plans for the week ("I'm gonna wake up earlier than I need to! And run! And not hit the snooze button ten times! And pack a healthy lunch every day!") aren't going to work out because everything that seems so simple and sensible in the evening when you're making these grand plans evaporates when the alarm goes off and your snoozy, lazy, take-out loving ass has the choice of hauling itself out of bed or spending another ten minutes warm and cozy under the covers. And you spend another day swearing at yourself as you realize you only have fifteen minutes to make yourself presentable, again, and race through getting ready inevitably forgetting something vital. Like pants. Or maybe that's just me. Here's your Tuesday night television:

When the blood-splattered story-song “The Wig He Made Her Wear” appeared in the middle of Drive-By Truckers’ otherwise pop-friendly 2010 album The Big To-Do, it stuck out like a drunken, black-sheep uncle at a family reunion. But in light of Go-Go Boots—a purposefully looser, jammier, and altogether weirder collection of songs recorded concurrently with the more direct Big To-Do material—“The Wig He Made Her Wear” now sounds like a prologue. Like that song, “The Fireplace Poker” is a restlessly wandering tale involving a disgraced preacher and a twisted family drama that can’t be obscured by small-town niceties ...

If you're anything like the MTV Newsroom staff, then the 53rd Grammy Awards kept you up until all hours on Sunday night (February 13). So now that you're already used to staying up past your bedtime, why not spend the rest of your week staying up late and watching talk shows? It's a good week for it, as there are some truly top-shelf guests hitting the studios this week — many of them fresh from their Grammy victories. For example, Lady Gaga will sit down and chat with Jay Leno on "The Tonight Show" on Monday night (February 14), where she will no doubt discuss her much-talked-about egg-assisted entrance on the red carpet. Other guests on "The Tonight Show" this week include John Legend (Monday), Charles Barkley (Wednesday, February 16) and 30 Seconds to Mars (Friday, February 18).
Meanwhile, David Letterman has cast his lot in another direction this week, as both his Monday and Tuesday...

Patterson Hood and crew made a series of mini-documentaries related to the various themes and influences the band explores on their next album, "Go-Go Boots." The eight episodes are a companion to this, their ninth studio album, due out Feb. 15th. The episode below, directed with Jason Thrasher, delves into the band's relationship with the music and mythology of Eddie Hinton -- the obscure soul singer whom Hood described as "if Otis Redding met Howlin' Wolf somewhere in the middle."
"Back in the 60's and 70's, Eddie Hinton lived and recorded in my hometown of Muscle Shoals Alabama where he was a part of the thriving music scene that was based there," Hood explains. "A triple threat (singer, guitar player and songwriter) Eddie participated in hit music by Percy Sledge, Bobby Womack, Aretha Franklin, Boz Scaggs, Dusty Springfield.... Later he made several incredible albums as a solo artist."

"I feel sorry for people who don't drink. When they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're going to feel all day."
-- Frank Sinatra
It's a good thing I drink, because the morning is usually when I feel the worst I'm going to feel all day. Things improve once I get out of bed (fortunately, I'm not at all prone to hangovers), and they're definitely better now that the coffee is going down and the backache is gone, and I still have that first beer to look forward to.
It's probably a function of my age (early -- just barely -- 50s) and the age of our mattress (around 28). We really need a new one, but who has that kind of money? (Really, I'm asking you who does, cause maybe he/she can give us some. Is there a mattress charity that will hand them out to the sleep-deprived?...

First of all, I was surprised and amazed this week to get an actual fan letter. Me, little ol' Tater? Has a fan?
I can't believe it either.
Believe me, I'm not doing this for the glory or the adulation of the sweaty uncouth masses. I do it for the money, the big bucks I don't want to name names but his initials are Rowles promised me, and his tab is up to about $100 large now and getting bigger by the second, what with the 4000% annual interest compounded daily and all, and I have yet to see a penny of it. I hope I don't have to send the Mountaineer to his house to hold him at musketpoint until he pays up, but you do what you gotta do.
Anyway, I got a fan letter, a delightful one, and while I'm too modest to reproduce any of it here (it really was a terrific letter,...

At last, the tribute he deserves The songs of dirt-road troubador John Prine are malleable—simple, elegiac tales of people living out simple lives. They’re easy tunes to cover, which means this smartly-assembled tribute album is long overdue. It draws from the legion of neo-folk acolytes Prine has helped shuffle into the spotlight, with the Avett Brothers, My Morning Jacket and the Drive-By Truckers, among others, scribbling the margins of his well-thumbed volumes in their own shorthand. Justin Vernon of Bon Iver welcomes “Bruised Orange (Chain of Sorrow)” into his misty, distant world, and Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band...

Every year around this time, the good folks behind Chicago's Lollapalooza finally unveil the daily schedule for the three-day festival by the lake. It's an occasion both exhilarating and heart-rending for ticket holders looking forward to 72 hours of musical nirvana in the shadow of the big city. Exhilarating because they can finally figure out where to be when, and heartbreaking because, inevitably, they'll realize there's no way to be in two places at once to catch their favorite acts facing off at opposite ends of the more than mile-long festival grounds.
And so, we offer you this year's allotment of musical "Sophie's Choices," which, to be honest, are not as fraught as past years (when, for instance, you had to choose between dueling headliners such as Tool and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs or Kanye West versus Nine Inch Nails).

When we announced the initial lineup for this year’s Forecastle Festival, it featured many notable acts, including The Flaming Lips, Widespread Panic, Spoon and the Drive-By Truckers, but now that the full schedule has been released, some impressive and unexpected additions, namely the Smashing Pumpkins, are increasing the Louisville, Ky. event’s prominence. More than 100 bands are now scheduled to perform at the 9th annual fest, which will take place July 9-11 at the Louisville Waterfront Park....

Scott Teems directed one of my favorite films last year—That Evening Sun, an adaptation of a William Gay short story starring Hal Holbrook, Ray McKinnon and Carrie Preston. The movie made brilliant use of an original Drive-By Truckers song (which you can watch Patterson Hood play and discuss here). Teems, McKinnon and the Truckers have joined forces once again for the new Drive-By Truckers music video for “Working This Job.” The explicit version is below or you can watch the clean version at YouTube (the only difference is in the on-screen language)....

After years of toiling in some wildly successful rock bands (most notably Guns N' Roses and Velvet Revolver), Slash has finally made his way into the center of the spotlight with his first true solo album. It just debuted in third place on the Billboard album chart, moving over 60,000 copies in its first week on the strength of the behatted guitarist's non-stop promotion and the single "By the Sword" (a team-up with Wolfmother frontman Andrew Stockdale.
Slash is actually a tremendous collection of hard rock songs that center around the axe man's signature chunky, swirling riffs. His backing band features all of the original members of Guns N' Roses (Duff McKagan, Izzy Stradlin and Steven Adler — only Axl Rose is absent). In Santana style, each track has a guest vocalist, some of which work really well (Stockdale, Ian Astbury, Chris Cornell, Dave Grohl) while others stumble a bit (Fergie, Myles Kennedy). Tuesday a bunch of us will pile in the Tatermobile and make the run up to Mr. Small's Funhouse to see the Drive-By Truckers.
This is a band, a rock and roll band, and for one night of my life the greatest rock and roll band I've ever seen, and pretty much the only band I leave town for now (it's a pretty good little town for music).
Now I've seen the DBTs something like a half dozen times and the rest of those shows were ... fair to pretty good (I know Tk saw them and was somewhat underwhelmed). But there was one night, about two years ago, when they somehow shifted into overdrive in the middle of one of their (typically two-plus hour) sets and turned it up to incendiary, becoming the single greatest thing I've ever seen, even though I was the bare-minimally het up on intoxicants.

Want to join the Mile High club? No, not that one. This one may not be quite as much fun, but you don’t have to leave the ground. Dave Matthews Band and Jack Johnson will headline the Mile High Music Festival, Aug. 14-15. The Aeg-produced event takes place at (warning, extremely unwieldy name coming) On the Fields at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, which is just outside of Denver. Tickets go on sale April 10 and are $150 for the two-day event. Other artists playing the festival include My Morning Jacket, Weezer, Train, Phoenix, Cypress Hill, Drive-By Truckers,...

I promised all the other "Venture Brothers" fanatics out there that I'd update them as soon as I heard anything about a new season. Well, since Jackson Publick has not posted anything of substance on his blog for about four months, I wasn't checking every day and missed the post he put up on Saturday about the new season. I saw it yesterday after I'd already written yesterday's column so I'm sure most of you die hard fans have already seen it. For those of you who haven't; Season 4.2 will begin airing sometime in August, there's no official date yet. Yes it blows, but that's what's happening. There are also "Venture Brothers" action figures set to come out sometime around July, and season 4.1 will get it's own DVD release sometime in late summer or fall. For more complete information you can go visit Jackson Publick's LiveJournal. And here's Wednesday night's TV:

Every few years a song comes along that is so insanely catchy, so brain-buzzingly sharp that in addition to blanketing the pop radio waves it becomes a cultural touchstone for artists of all stripes who can't resist giving it their own spin.
Back in 2003, it was Outkast's "Hey Ya," the inescapable hip-pop megasmash from Andre 3000 that was covered by everyone from Razorlight to Pennywise, from Supersuckers to the Drive-By Truckers.
A year later, Kelly Clarkson's sugar pop breakthrough "Since U Been Gone" was so cheesy it crossed back over into being cool, with takes by Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, Butch Walker, screamo act A Day to Remember, F---ed Up, the Aquabats, Keri Hilson, Jenny Owens Young, the Gossip, Robyn and a sample treatment on Girl Talk's Feed the Animals.
This year's model is Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance," which continues to be a monster at radio and brings new iterations every day.

It's the final week of March, and though we have a fresh few days on our hands, the late night lineup is looking suspiciously like last week's. It's not surprising, as Miley Cyrus hits the shows hard in support of her new film "The Last Song" (which hits theaters this Wednesday, March 31) and Justin Bieber continues his publicity rounds for My World 2.0 (which is expected to top the Billboard album chart this week).
Bieber visits "The Tonight Show" on Thursday (April 1), wrapping up a music-heavy week for Jay Leno that includes Joss Stone on Monday (March 29) and OneRepublic on Wednesday (March 31). Meanwhile, Cyrus will take her act to "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" on Tuesday (March 30) on a show that will also feature a performance by Erykah Badu. (Miley will also drop in on "Ellen" on Wednesday.) Kimmel will also welcome Matisyahu on Wednesday and Ok Go on Thursday.

After a one-week absence from the top of the Billboard albums chart, Lady Antebellum will return to #1 on next week's Top 200, as their Need You Now sold more than 93,000 copies in its eight week of release, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
That was enough to claim the peak position on an otherwise pretty slow chart week. Gospel artist Marvin Sapp's Here I Am debuts at #2, with sales of more than 75,000 copies. Last week's champ, Ludacris, follows at #3, as his Battle of the Sexes concept album sold about 61,000 copies.
The Edge compilation — a two-disc collection of rock hits from the likes of Puddle of Mudd, Jet and Hoobastank — scored the week's second-highest bow, selling more than 53,000 copies to land at #4. And chart mainstay Lady Gaga's The...
