He was awarded Knight Bachelor of the Order of the British Empire in the 2011 Queen's Birthday Honours List for his services to education. He is the Head of the Schools Inspection Service, Ofsted.
He was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 2006.
He was influential in shaping the British national curriculum and England's exam system.
After resigning from Ofsted in 2000, he became a professor of education at the University of Buckingham.
