On January 9, the Art Directors Guild announced the nominees for its 27th annual awards, which will be handed out on February 18. These kudos have a stellar record at previewing the Academy Awards. Over the first 26 years of these prizes, the eventual Oscar winner for Best Production Design has always numbered among the Adg nominees in the various categories.
“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” is the clear frontrunner to win the Oscar for Best Production Design. It reaped a bid in the fantasy film genre with the Adg as did its strongest Oscar rival, “Avatar: The Way of Water.” The other three likeliest Oscar nominees — “Babylon,” “Elvis” and “The Fabelmans”– contend in the period picture category. That race is rounded out by “All Quiet on the Western Front” and “White Noise.”
The other fantasy film nominees are: “The Batman,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “Nope.”

It’s no mystery why stop-motion animation is admired by critics and audiences alike. The extensive manual labor every visual composition requires keeps us connected to cinema’s tactile past, to an era when the term “special effects” referred to pyrotechnics and animatronics rather than CGI. Stop-motion features have a texture computers, as of now, are unable to successfully replicate.
CGI is a cheaper and, some feel, increasingly suitable alternative to stop motion—“Rango” and “The Lego Movie” mostly pulled it off, after all—but one artist who clearly understands the inimitable quality of stop motion, the beautifully imperfect aesthetic that’s produced by working with raw materials, is Guillermo del Toro, whose “Pinocchio” was launched on Netflix December 9. It’s hard not to be romantic about handcrafted animation when AI is generating art and big budget films are predominantly assembled out of frame.

“Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” is a meticulously crafted labor of love that’s putting critics and audiences alike under its spell. The stop-motion adaptation of the Wooden Boy’s tale has been praised for infusing its source material with wondrous visuals and dark political themes. At the time of this writing, “Gdt’s Pinocchio” is globally the most-watched film on Netflix and could gain traction with awards voters in the coming weeks. The movie needs seven nods—Best Picture, Best Animated Feature, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Production Design, Best Score, Best Song, and Best Sound—to surpass 2008 juggernaut “Wall-e’s” record for most nominations received by an animated film.

“Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” hit Netflix a few weeks back, and it has already received a few critics’ awards and nominations, though it’s a very different animated movie than we normally get over the course of a year, being a stop-motion animated film del Toro directed with Mark Gustafson, working with Portland stop-motion animation house ShadowMachine. Lisa Henson, daughter of the late great puppeteer Jim Henson, is one of the film’s producers, which gives the film even more of a pedigree within that world.

The ‘22/23 film awards cycle is so competitive that even below-the-line categories like Best Production Design are hard to call. Gold Derby’s projected slate of nominees has at least seven titles that would look like frontrunners in weaker years.
In first, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” is positioned to repeat its predecessor’s victory and earn Hannah Beachler her second Oscar. “Babylon” is close behind. For his 1920s-set dark comedy, Damien Chazelle worked with Florencia Martin, whose recent credits include “Blonde” and “Licorice Pizza.” “Babylon” already seemed like a lock, and reactions to the movie’s unveiling in LA only solidify its status.

When I heard Elizabeth Cotten (1895-1987) was going into the Rock Hall, I nearly fell out of my chair! As host of “The Village Folk Show,” I regularly hear Cotten’s name from the mouths of prominent folk artists — Guy Davis, David Bromberg, Gillian Welch, Eliza Gilkyson, Amy Ray. Credited with the “Cotten-picking” guitar-playing style — she played left-handed and upside-down — this master’s impact on roots music is strong, deep and continuing.
Meanwhile, her story is amazing: While working in a department store in 1940s Washington D.C., Cotten discovered a crying, lost, little girl and returned her to her mother. The grateful mom: singer-songwriter Peggy Seeger, sister of legendary Mike Seeger, who promptly hired Cotten as a domestic for the family. When Mike Seeger discovered her long-dormant talent with a six-string, he recorded and released the 62-year-old’s first record, “Elizabeth Cotten: Folk Songs and Instrumentals with Guitar.”

After the big announcement a few weeks ago, you’re probably itching to find out more about Thq Nordic and Pieces Interactive’s remake of Alone in the Dark. Lucky for us, IGN sat down with Game Director Michael Hedberg to talk about how his team is bringing the game back for a modern audience. On top of that, VideoGamer also snagged a bit of info on Pieces Interactive’s plans, including a playable teaser!
As mentioned when the remake was announced, the story has been penned by Hedberg, who also wrote the story for Soma and Amnesia: The Dark Descent. For AitD, Hedberg combines elements from all three of the original games, while at the same time charting a new direction. Hedberg studied the original games and in order to come up with what the original developer’s creative intentions were when developing his new story.

I've got some incredible concept art to share with you for a new supernatural samurai fantasy film being made called The Haunted Swordsman. On top of the beautiful art that was created for the film, you have to know that the movie is being made with puppets, which takes the whole project to a new level of awesomeness.
The Haunted Swordsman is “a live action samurai tale set in a world of demons and ghosts that will utilize 36-inch tall bunraku puppets, traditional in-camera effects, and good old-fashioned smoke and mirrors trickery.”
If that doesn't get you excited for this film project, I don't know what will. The movie is being developed by creature effects artist and model maker Kevin McTurk, and the concept art was done by Guy Davis, who previously worked on the Guillermo del Toro films such as Pacific Rim, Crimson Peak, and The Shape of Water.

In trying to scare up some laughs for its annual Halloween episode, The Simpsons also got deadly serious: They recruited big-screen writer-director Guillermo Del Toro. Known for crafting surreal worlds of fantasy and horror (Pan’s Labyrinth, The Devil’s Backbone) as well as action (Pacific Rim), Del Toro turned Springfield into his own wicked playground with a 2-minute-45-second couch gag/ opening-titles extravaganza to kick off Oct. 6′s “Treehouse of Horror Xxiv.” It’s a dense, elaborate, clever, creepy, impressive creation — and it requires several viewings to process all of the action. Comic book artist, Guy Davis ("Hellboy"), has started to branch out, creating concept art for featured films, like Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim. The artwork below, that was posted on Legendary's facebook page, focuses mainly on his early designs for the large inter-dimensional monsters, known as kaijus. Concept Art by Guy Davis Pacific Rim Synopsis - When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to...

The arrival of Kick-Ass 2 is a reminder of how comic book artists and creators have become movie industry royalty, James writes...
I like to think that the following happened on a daily basis during the filming of Kick-Ass 2 - all cast and crew members signalled their arrival on set by announcing, "I've come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass, and I'm all out of bubblegum."
If no one actually did take the opportunity to make a tenuous title-based association and quote Roddy Piper's best line in They Live, it's a damn shame. If Kick-Ass 3 happens, someone (everyone) involved can start this motivational ritual/repeat film reference in-joke when shooting begins on that sequel. In advance, you're welcome.

Mondo has unveiled two Guillermo del Toro posters.
Mike Mignola, Guy Davis and Dave Stewart have provided posters for the writer-director's Spanish-language films Cronos and The Devil's Backbone.
Del Toro previously adapted Mignola's Hellboy property into two films.
The comics creator reteamed with prolific colourist Stewart on the poster for the offbeat vampire movie Cronos.
Davis - who provided monster designs for del Toro's Pacific Rim - illustrated the Devil's Backbone poster.
The limited edition posters will go on sale today.
Del Toro's Pacific Rim opened in cinemas earlier this month featuring a cast including Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi.

If the phrase, “giant robots and monsters” alone doesn’t move you out of the house to see Guillermo del Toro’s latest film, Pacific Rim, then I’ll try to impart my enthusiasm to your decision.
The world is being threatened by insurmountable odds as monstrous Kaiju (Japanese for “strange beast”) are surfacing to Earth by way of a cosmic breach in the Pacific Ocean in southeast Asia. Understanding that this was a global threat, the world powers united and funded a program constructing giant robots called Jaegers, manned by humans to combat Kaijus. But with each monster that comes through, the Kaiju become more deadly and learns how to stop the Jaegers. America’s Jaeger, “Gipsy Danger” was manned by two brothers, Raleigh (Sons of Anarchy‘s Charlie Hunnam) and Yancy Becket (Diego Klattenhoff) until one Kaiju nearly destroyed it; Raleigh is forced into hiding.

A few days I had a chance to speak to Guillermo del Toro about his giant robots vs. giant monsters extravaganza, “Pacific Rim.”
The film is set as a war between humankind and monstrous sea creatures wages on, a former pilot and a trainee are paired up to drive a seemingly obsolete special weapon in a desperate effort to save the world from the apocalypse.
Here is what Guillermo del Toro had to say about his upcoming film and more…
Your writing process, how do you write plots and how do you write the dialogue and structure for a story like this?
Guillermo del Toro: Well, when we came on board to do Pacific Rim, Travis had a pitch that was about eight pages long and outlined the world. The Kaijus, the Jaegers, the ideas of the breach. But then I came up with the idea of the two...

We got some goodies from Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim for you today.
First, in an interview with the La Times’ Hero Complex, Guillermo Del Toro discusses his vision for the monsters/robots film. He had this to say, along with a helluva lot more, in the video below: “I felt there was a chance to do something fresh, something new that at the same time was conscious of the heritage, but not a pastiche or an homage or a greatest hits of everything…One of the first things I did is make it a point to not check any old movies or any other references. Like start from scratch.”
Secondly, below the clip, there’s an interview that was left over from Comic-Con that delves even deeper into Pacific Rim, courtesy of Uruloki.
Uruloki: You worked with Francisco Ruiz Velasco, Guy Davis and Henry Fong in the design of the creatures or Kaijus.
