It’s official: The Top 24 artists on American Idol Season 21 have been confirmed. Well, actually, it’s the Top 26 — in a surprise twist, the judges decided to send Matt Wilson and Colin Stough as two additional contestants in the next round. This Paper Girls article contains spoilers.
Like Damon Lindelof’s take on Watchmen before it, Paper Girls takes a beloved comic work and expands its possibilities for the small screen. Streaming now on Amazon Prime Video, the eight-episode debut season captures the heart, fun, and general sci-fi mindfuckery of the source material. More than that though, it doubles down on the saga’s core humanity by taking time to explore the rich inner lives of Mac, Kj, Tiffany, and Erin as they are thrown into a decades-spanning adventure that puts them in conflict with everything from their future selves to the realities of their mortality.
Part of the reason this adaptation is so successful is that Paper Girls‘ comic creators Brian K. Vaughan (who wrote all 30 issues) and Cliff Chiang (who illustrated them) serve as executive producers on the series. Their involvement both legitimizes and endorses the show, which ambitiously...

Let’s get this out of the way now: The comparisons “Paper Girls” will get to “Stranger Things” are inevitable, but not especially fair.
Yes, “Paper Girls” also opens in the 1980s with four 12-year-olds on bikes who end up tackling otherworldly forces way bigger than themselves. But by the middle of the first episode, “Paper Girls” — which was a comic book series before “Stranger Things” was a TV show, anyway — turns itself inside out to become something else entirely. Suddenly, what at first looked like yet another throwback Amblin-esque series reveals a more bittersweet lens, and harder science fiction heart.
As written by Brian K. Vaughan and illustrated by Cliff Chiang (both executive producers on this show), the original “Paper Girls” comics developed a devoted fanbase thanks to its sharp characterization, unsparing twists, and Chiang’s angular imagery rendered in fluorescent pinks and blues by colorist Matt Wilson. The Amazon adaptation,...

This Paper Girls review contains no spoilers.
The main thing working against Paper Girls — Amazon’s mostly excellent TV adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang’s multiple Eisner-winning Image Comics series — is Stranger Things. Seeing how both chronicle the adventures of 1980s pre-teens who are unwittingly thrust into supernatural conflicts in which the fate of humanity is at stake, some comparisons are bound to arise. This, combined with the fact that Stranger Things is the hugest thing in genre television in recent memory, means that the negative/most vocal aspects of fandom are right now sharpening their Demogorgon-esque claws to dismiss Paper Girls as a derivative rip-off of the blockbuster series.
Not only would this be wrong but wholly inaccurate, as Paper Girls (the comic of which actually pre-dates the Netflix juggernaut by a year) is its own original entity that shares only the most surface and fleeting...

Back in October 2015, acclaimed comic book writer Brian K. Vaughn unveiled a new sci-fi mystery comic titled "Paper Girls." Joining forces with artist Cliff Chiang, colorist Matt Wilson, letterer Jared K. How the hell has Kieron Gillen never written a summer event comic before?
Gillen is the writer behind Eisner- and Hugo-nominated comics such as perennial Den of Geek favorites Once & Future and The Wicked + The Divine. But even before that, he was part of that mid-aughts wave of Image writers who took over Marvel’s flagship books. Gillen wrote a couple of excellent Utopia-era X-Men books (Generation Hope and Uncanny X-Men), as well as a beloved run with Kid Loki that helped inspire one Disney+ show and a relaunch of Young Avengers with Jamie McKelvie that is likely going to have an impact on the MCU further down the line. And yet, somehow, his first blockbuster comics crossover is out in 2022.

This article contains Eternals spoilers.
It’s not hard, when a Captain America or an Iron Man movie hits, for Marvel to have a comic on shelves that new fans can be pointed toward as an accessible way to get to know the characters. The same can’t be said for The Eternals. In a lot of ways, Jack Kirby’s most bizarre creations – god-like beings, created by the all-powerful Celestials to do battle with the deformed, wild Deviants – have endured despite their relative scarcity. The sum total of what can be reasonably called Eternals stories only runs to about 50 issues. So the task of centering them ahead of their big movie debut in November is both a blessing and a curse, even with an all-star cast and an Oscar-winning director at the helm.
Enter Kieron Gillen.
Gillen is a Marvel veteran and no stranger to the company’s cultural juggernaut side.

The world may be upside down, but the Hugo Awards are forever! The Hugos are the longest-running fan-voted awards in the genres of science fiction and fantasy, first bring presented in 1953. The awards are generally given out during the World Science Fiction Convention, which is in a different host city every year. Sadly, the 78th Worldcon, aka CoNZealand, set to take place in (you guessed it) New Zealand, will have to be virtual this year. The Hugo ceremony will therefore also take place online.
Today, CoNZealand announced the finalists for this year’s Hugos, voted on by 1,584 people, who submitted 27,033 nominations. Those who were members of last year’s Worldcon, An Irish Worldcon, and members of this year’s Worldcon, CoNZealand, were eligible to vote, however, only CoNZealand members will be able to vote on the final ballot and choose the winners. New York couple Reilly Jennings and Amanda Wheeler had a feeling that the coronavirus pandemic was going to derail their wedding plans. So with the help of a friend, they improvised. The two tied the knot on a sidewalk of a residential street in the city. Their pal, Matt Wilson, performed their short wedding ceremony from his fourth-floor apartment window. Neighbors cheered and sirens wailed in the distance as the couple exchanged vows in front of a parked vehicle and sealed their union with a kiss. A few friends stood several feet away from the couple and one watched the proceedings from inside a car, practicing social distancing as the Cdc has urged people to...

Deborra-lee Furness.
In 2008 Deborra-lee Furness founded About Change, a not-for-profit organisation which supports and educates families and communities in caring for displaced children – an abiding passion which she will bring to directing episodes of Neighbours.
The actress, who was a regular in Neighbours in 1985, will spend three weeks on the Fremantle show directing scenes in which same-sex couple Aaron (Matt Wilson) and David (Takaya Honda) decide to become permanent carers.
The serial’s executive producer Jason Herbison, who has an adopted daughter with his partner Pete, is familiar with the bureaucracy involved in the adoption process.
Impressed with her work through Adopt Change, Herbison invited her to direct the block with Kate Kendall. The adoption story arc plays out over three months, for which Deborra-lee will serve as a consultant. The episodes will go to air on 10 Peach in June.
