- Came up with the idea for The Yule Log (1966) after watching a TV commercial.
- Long-time TV executive with WPIX-TV (Channel 11) in New York from 1953 to 1975; served at various times as general manager, executive vice president and station president. Prior to joining WPIX, he was vice-president in charge of sales for CBS, and before that he was general sales manager at ABC.
- Lived long enough to see his beloved Yule Log streamed on the WPIX website. In 1999 his son Mitch Thrower brought a laptop into his hospital room so he could see it.
- When Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated, he ordered that a slide with one word on it...'Shame'...be broadcast by WPIX for 2 1/2 hours uninterrupted.
