“A Journal for Jordan,” a drama directed by Denzel Washington and starring Michael B. Jordan, has been set for release this December.
The film will be released by Sony’s Columbia Pictures and will open on Dec. 10 in New York and Los Angeles, followed by a wide release on Dec. 22.
“A Journal for Jordan” tells the true story of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Dana Canedy’s love affair with First Sergeant Charles Monroe King. King kept a journal full of poignant life lessons for their newborn son Jordan while deployed overseas; lessons that lived on after King was killed in action in 2006, when Jordan was just seven months old.
John Burnham Schwartz and Virgil Williams wrote the screenplay based on Canedy’s article and memoir from 2008. The film’s producers are Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Steve Tisch and Aaron L. Gilbert, along with both Washington and Jordan. Jason Cloth is an executive producer.

The HBO original film “The Wizard of Lies,” Barry Levinson’s insightful and sharp look inside the rise and fall (and fall and fall) of American fraudster Bernie Madoff, ends with a question. Robert De Niro, as the baffled, wide-eyed Madoff, stuck in prison for a sentence he can never outlive, implores a visitor: “Do you think I’m a sociopath?”
By then, Madoff’s precise pathology doesn’t matter much; he’s a bad man who did horrible things. And ultimately, neither De Niro nor Levinson are concerned with diagnoses or medical opinions. They’re hung up on something much more timely and urgent.

Michelle Pfeiffer has signed up to join Robert De Niro for HBO Films' long-awaited Bernie Madoff movie, Wizard of Lies, the network announced Thursday. The project, which saw some initial buzz in 2011, has been moving at a glacial pace, but the addition of Pfeiffer is a welcome sign things are finally picking up. Pfeiffer will play De Niro's onscreen wife, Ruth Madoff, and they'll be joined by Alessandro Nivola, who will take a turn as Madoff's older son, Mark. (That is what you call picture-perfect casting — even before all the makeup!) The story follows Madoff's infamous Ponzi scheme; Barry Levinson will direct, based on Diana Henriques's book of the same name, as well as Laurie Sandell's Truth and Consequences. Sam Baum, Sam Levinson, and John Burnham Schwartz are attached as writers for the script. Other production details, most notably with regard to timeline, are unavailable at the moment.

Exclusive: There have been developments in HBO Films’ long-gestating movie about Bernie Madoff starring Robert De Niro as the disgraced financier. Lie To Me creator Samuel Baum has been brought in as the new writer, and HBO has optioned a second book, Truth And Consequences: Life Inside The Madoff Family by Laurie Sandell. It will be used as additional source material alongside Diana Henriques’ bestseller The Wizard Of Lies: Bernie Madoff And The Death Of Trust, on which the HBO movie, also titled The Wizard Of Lies, is based. The film, which tells the story of the imprisoned swindler and the $65 billion Ponzi scheme he concocted, has been in the works at HBO since 2011, when the network optioned Henriques’ book, attached De Niro to play Madoff and hired John Burnham Schwartz to write the script. Tribeca Prods is producing, with its principals De Niro and Jane Rosenthal executive producing.

Exclusive: Conde Nast Entertainment Group, which launched under Dawn Ostroff to mine feature and TV properties from the archives of the publisher’s magazine stable, has unearthed two separate projects. Run by former Imagine and Fox Searchlight exec Jeremy Steckler, the feature division has set Fracture scribe Daniel Pyne to script The Camorra Never Sleeps, a drama about the notorious Naples-based criminal underworld that is based on the 2012 Vanity Fair article written by William Langewiesche. Conde Nast Entertainment Group has separately hired Reservation Road scribe John Burnham Schwartz to script a film based on The Horse Whisperer, a 2002 GQ article written by Robert Draper. The movie will certainly need a new title, but the article is based on the long-shot journey of Wesley Keith Ritchie, who went from a Kentucky prison inmate to being a horse rehabilitation specialist who found salvation through the broken down progeny of Triple Crown winner Affirmed.

When John Burnham Schwartz was a boy, Dustin Hoffman was a regular guest. But what did the actor learn from the breakdown of John's parents' marriage?
It was August 1979, a rainy night in an old beach house on the Atlantic coast. I was 14 years old. John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men was on my summer reading list for school and, after dinner, as my family drifted back into the living room to sit by the fire, one of our house guests – a famous, energetic and physically unprepossessing actor with a prominent nose and flat, nasal voice – picked up my copy of the book, opened it at the first page and began performing it aloud, inhabiting the disparate minds and voices of the protagonists George and Lennie with uncanny precision. At first, self-conscious smiles appeared in our makeshift audience, though we quickly realised that this extraordinary display was no laughing matter.

"If everything moves along and there's no major catastrophes, we're basically headed towards holograms. Why can't you have Hamlet in 3D who comes out to the audience and does 'To be or not to be?' I mean, they do in the theater. You have to think that way. Don't let the economics, and fashion, inhibit you if you're being creative."

[1] Actors signing on to play real-life figures is nothing new, but casting, say, Jesse Eisenberg in the role of ordinary-looking dude Mark Zuckerberg is one thing. When the character in question is a larger-than-life icon whose unique looks and mannerisms are recognized all over the globe, that's something else entirely, whether it's Michael Douglas playing Liberace [2], Michelle Williams doing her best Marilyn Monroe [3] -- or Eric Bana rocking the King's pompadour. The Aussie actor has signed on to star as Elvis Presley in Elvis & Nixon, the directorial debut of Cary Elwes. Bana will also executive produce, through his shingle Pick Up Truck Pictures. Meanwhile, Danny Huston is in final negotiations to play the other title role, of U.S. president Richard M. Nixon. The story, which was written by Elwes with Joey Sagal and Hanala Sagal, revolves around a real-life visit that Presley paid to Nixon at the White House...

Exclusive: HBO’s movie about Bernie Madoff starring Robert De Niro as the disgraced financier is gaining momentum with the hire of Reservation Road scribe John Burnham Schwartz to write the script. HBO started the process in May when it optioned Diane Henriques’ non-fiction book The Wizard Of Lies: Bernie Madoff And The Death Of Trust, which is recounting the life of the imprisoned swindler and the $65 billion Ponzi scheme he concocted, and began negotiations with De Niro to play the lead. Now the high-profile project is moving to the next stage with ICM-repped Schwartz set to write a script based on Henriques’ book and additional source material I heard HBO is in the process of acquiring.

THR reports that Focus is potentially tying down Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess for what is described as When Harry Met Sally (I wonder how many pitching sessions in the past two decades use that exact title?) - The Random House Films/Focus Features partnership got off to a shaky start when they released Reservation Road. The John Burnham Schwartz novel was either a poor choice for a first venture or it was one more reason why someone too close to the material shouldn't adapt their own novel. I think I saw this at Tiff a couple of years back, even the stellar cast couldn't save the project. It made a paltry 100 grand at the box office. After carefully selecting their next project, Focus have then secured Lone Scherfig and now the first piece of casting news certainly gives wings to the project. Escape Artists has acquired the life rights to an essayist whose piece was published in January in the New York Times as a producing and potential starring vehicle for Denzel Washington. Jonathan Burnham Schwartz has been tapped to adapt.
The project, "Journal for Jordan", is based on Dana Canedy's essay, which describes a 200-page journal penned by her fiance, 1st Sgt. Charles Monroe King, for their son. The 48-year-old soldier was killed in Baghdad in October, one month shy of finishing his tour of duty. He had left for the Middle East before his son was born. The journal aimed to impart words of wisdom to the son on how to live a proper life and to prepare him for a life without his father.
Crown will release a book based on the journal.
The project is expected to land at Columbia Pictures, where Escape Artists has a first-look deal.
Escape Artists' Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch are producing alongside Washington.
