“The Freedom Orchestra” (working title), a documentary film presented by Clive Myrie, will tell the story of Ukraine’s newly formed Freedom Orchestra. In the midst of the ongoing war with Russia, 75 of Ukraine’s noted musicians have come together to bring a message of defiance and hope. Some of their family members are on the frontlines, and many have fled Ukraine since the war began.
Myrie follows the stories of the musicians from rehearsing, often alone, in Ukraine, to coming together for their first rehearsal as an orchestra in Warsaw for their inaugural concert — ahead of a tour of Europe and the U.S., including a performance at the BBC Proms on July 31.
Myrie said: “There has always been a cultural frontline in this war and I wanted to reflect that struggle. This documentary, I hope, shines a light on Ukraine’s artistic achievements as well as creative spirit,...

Alt-rock stalwart Mark Lanegan unveiled a chilling new song, “Bleed All Over,” from his upcoming album, Straight Songs of Sorrow, set to arrive May 8th.
The track boasts an icy post-punk edge thanks to the tight skip of the drums, the queasy synth trails during the verse and rubbery plunks during the hook. Anchoring the song with some semblance of warmth, though, is the constant strum of an acoustic guitar and Lanegan’s resonant vocals as he pleads, “Baby, baby, baby don’t you say it’s over/Now that...

Marianne Faithfull feels out of sorts. “I have a cold, the weather’s been terribly hard here in Paris and, what else … well, the usual,” she says on a call from her home in the City of Lights. “I’ve got to have a shoulder replacement, so I’m in a lot of pain.” Despite living in a state of discomfort, her voice sounds strong and there’s something about how her words come through her London accent that suggests confidence. “In the end it will be much better,” she concedes.

Summer love! Prince Harry and his girlfriend Cressida Bonas were spotted at yet another music festival over the weekend—this time at Womad in Wiltshire, England. The 28-year-old prince and the blond beauty joined a bevy of their friend as they listened to artists like Ed Harcourt and Arrested Development. And not even the rain could dampen their moods, the royal covered up with a hat (the same one he wore to Glastonbury a few weeks ago!) and coat while his gal pal brought a bright blue umbrella to tie her over for the occasion. This doesn't mark the first time that the two have made an appearance at Womad. Last year, both Harry and Cressida stopped by to watch their favorite bands play...

Another week, another round of harsh critiques. In music, Theme Park released their self titled album this week, a project packed with upbeat tracks that many critics felt lacked enough substance to really stand out. Johnny Marr's "The Messenger" received some of the strongest reviews this week, but the project was viewed as more of a homage to his earlier sounds that anything really new from the rocker. Sally Shapiro received negative marks for the repetitive sound of the songs on "Somewhere Else" and Ed Harcourt's "Back into the Woods" quickly lost its luster after a few songs.
At the cinema, "Jack The Giant Slayer" received negative takes from most reviewers, owing mostly to a storyline that failed to emotionally impact audiences. "21 And Over" was deemed a ludicrous, immature film worthy of no one's time and "Phantom" contained numerous missteps that caused the film to lose steam.

For No Good Reason – Ralph Steadman and Johnny Depp in Ralph’s Studio, Kent, UK. Photographer: Charlie Paul
Sony Pictures Classics announced today that they have acquired all North American rights to Charlie Paul’s directorial debut, For No Good Reason from Itch Film. Foreign sales are being handled by Independent Film Sales. Charlie Paul, who has been a director in advertising for years and is a former artist himself, spent 10 years making For No Good Reason. Produced by Itch Film’s co-founder Lucy Paul, the intimate documentary portrait focuses on Ralph Steadman and features Johnny Depp observing Steadman’s fascinating working process at his home studio.
Ralph Steadman is most frequently celebrated for his brilliant illustrations accompanying the writings of Hunter S Thompson, and their collaborations defined the Gonzo school of journalism that emerged to pick at the scabs of the American establishment during the turbulent eras of Vietnam and Nixon.

The A.V. Club out of Denver/Boulder has a great interview with Bobby Long where he reminisces about his very first show, including what it was like and what he sang. This first show is of course long before you heard Bobby’s work with Marcus Foster for Rob Pattinson’s Never Think of the Twilight Soundtrack fame. Read more below:
Bobby Long: I’d just moved to London to study at university, and my friend had set up a MySpace page for me. I didn’t really know how to do the whole thing, and so I just recorded two songs and put them up there really quick. I sent out a message, like, “Hey, I wrote some songs. What do you think?” A few people got back, but they were kind of random people of not really any industry importance, and they were like, “Yeah, they’re cool. The songs are okay. The production’s bad,” whatever. But then this one woman e-mailed me, and I think her name was Kristen Anna, and she was really lovely. She was running a gig at Hackney Empire in this bar called The Marie Lloyd, and she said, “Would you like to come on and open up?” Ed Harcourt was headlining with his group, and I’d just bought his record, and I’d just moved to London—so I was a bit starry-eyed in general.
So, I opened that show, and I played for 25 minutes, and my friends came down. It was really nerve-wracking. It was probably too good a gig to play for my first-ever show, really.
The A.V. Club: Did you play all originals, or did you throw some covers in there?
Bl: I played all originals, I think. It was also the day that Syd Barrett died, and they had all these pictures of him up in the café. It was quite a big deal. I remember that fairly fully.
Avc: How old were you?
Bl: I was 19 or 20.

Rock Island, Illinois native Lissie has written with Ed Harcourt, opened for Lenny Kravitz, covered Kid Cudi, and been remixed by DeadMau5, so is it any wonder that she seems at first blush like a singing, strumming identity crisis? Her debut album, Catching A Tiger, is probably a bit wispy for lovers of country grit, sorta jaunty for fans of traditional folk, and too pop to be the blues. She’s as prone to moments of Lilith Fair lilt and cheer (“Record Collector”) as she is to bouts of unbound guitar shredding (“In Sleep”). On the unshakeable single “Little Lovin ...

The Remember Me soundtrack. Robert Pattinson is, at this moment in time, two things: middle of the road, and the bringer of supreme financial success. He’s not unengaging either. There’s a certain smouldering quality about him. And Remember Me looks okay, in a generic angsty romance sort of way, although Emilie De Ravin, cute and likable though she is, is hardly a big-name co-star. But it’s hard to see him taking the kind of risks that for instance a young Leonardo Di Caprio took with films like The Basketball Diaries and Baz Luhrman’s populist but radical take on Romeo & Juliet. It seems Pattinson is capitalising on his meteoric appeal to the teenage girl market by shaping himself in the James Dean mould – that of the smouldering soulful rebel and romantic icon. And he’s exec producing, so he really means it
But the film hardly seems radical,...

If you've seen "(500) Days of Summer," then you might know it's screenplay is highly unusual. There's a non-linear structure, an omniscient narrator, a dance number, a sequence entirely unfolding in split-screen, and huge block letters in 20 point font. But at one point it was even more unusual.
Screenwriters Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber actually included an "appendix" at the end of the script, a series of disconnected pages designed to make the relationship at the story's core feel like something that really took place. Appendix A, for example, was a page of ticket stubs from concerts Tom allegedly took Summer to. Appendix B was a hand-written letter she once wrote him from a plane. And Appendix C was the tracklistings for three very different mix tapes Tom made Summer during their brief but memorable relationship.
The appendix idea was eventually scrapped but some of those pages survived. Thanks to Scott Neustadter,...

In a follow-up to Kiran Aditham’s Feature Story in Fangoria #283 (on-stands now), Fango caught up with Filmmaker Chris Fisher for some final thoughts on S. Darko, which arrives on DVD and Blu-Ray next Tuesday.
In the continuation of the world established by Richard Kelly in the 2001 cult favorite Donnie Darko, Fisher found himself treading in what many fans consider “sacred territory”.

We’re getting theatrical releases in most foreign markets like England, Germany, Italy, etc., and that’s all the really long-form stuff which is just getting started. Since this film unfortunately is going straight-to-dvd here, I’m just doing press for it. In fact, the main thing I’ve done is...

Shah has confirmed to Upcoming Film Scores that Ed Harcourt, the British multi-instrumentalist/rock star whose albums include "Strangers" and "Beautiful Lie," has been hired to write the original score for S. Darko, the follow-up to the 2001 independent hit Donnie Darko (which featured a memorable score by Michael Andrews). Harcourt made his film scoring debut with last year's New York City Serenade (starring Freddie Prinze Jr. and Chris Klein). S. Darko is helmed by Chris Fisher, whose previous credits include Dirty and Rampage: The Hillside Strangler Murders. The sequel is set seven years after Donnie Darko and tells the story about Donnie's sister, who are plagued by bizarre visions. Daveigh Chase reprises her role as Samantha Darko, other cast members include Jackson Rathbone, Ed Westwick, Justin Chatwin, Briana Evigan, James Lafferty and Elizabeth Berkley. Film will come out next year.
