Two WGA writers have most certainly not put their pencils down during the now-129-day strike against Hollywood studios. It is not against the guild’s rules to pen a… children’s book — especially one about the fight with the AMPTP.
Peter Cameron is the lead writer on “The Elves and the Shoemakers: a Grimm Little Tale of Givers and Takers.” He’s also a father who has struggled to find the right way to explain the strike to his 3-year-old son. So Cameron, whose dream “has always been” to write children’s books come retirement time (think more Roald Dahl than Dr. Seuss), dusted off his typewriter.
The picture book, a sequel to the Brothers Grimm’s “The Elves and the Shoemaker,” was co-written by a second WGA member with what Cameron called “priceless input” from a third. They prefer to remain anonymous; together, the group goes by “the elves.

The upcoming Woodstock Film Festival will kick off with Chloe Domont’s “Fair Play” and present a lifetime achievement award to James Ivory.
The 24th edition of the fest, which runs from Sept. 27 to Oct. 1 in New York’s Hudson Valley, about 100 miles north of Manhattan, features a lineup of world, U.S. and New York premieres of feature films directed by filmmakers ranging from Steve Buscemi (“The Listener”) and Wim Wenders (“Anselm”) to Roger Ross Williams (“Stamped From the Beginning”).
Opening night “Fair Play,” an erotic thriller about a power-hungry couple contending for power at a cutthroat financial firm, was acquired by Netflix for $20 million after debuting at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
Wff will be held at venues in Woodstock, Rosendale and Saugerties, all of which are Hudson Valley towns where many Academy members own homes, making the fest an award season campaign hotspot.

Bobby Cannavale (The Watcher, Blonde), Elizabeth Debicki (The Crown, Tenet) and Ruth Wilson (His Dark Materials, The Little Stranger) are teaming up for the romantic thriller Andorra, which legendary Oscar-winner James Ivory is set to exec produce.
Giuseppe Capotondi (The Burnt Orange Heresy) will direct the film from a script by Peter Cameron (What Happens at Night), adapted from his own acclaimed novel of the same name. Independent Entertainment, behind last year’s Harry Styles-starring, Toronto-bowing drama My Policeman, is set to launch sales on the prestige project in Cannes later this month.
Andorra follows an American named Alexander Fox (Cannavale) who begins an idyllic new life in the tiny sovereign state of Andorra after a personal tragedy, determined to reinvent himself. No, Daniel Day-Lewis is not backing out of his retirement from acting, but if it was up to James Ivory, he would be. In a recent conversation with Film Comment, the 90-year-old director and Oscar-winning Call Me By Your Name scripter explained that he’s “been thinking about doing an adaptation of the novel Coral Glynn by Peter Cameron, which I’d like to direct, set in England in the 1950s.” He continued, “There is a sharp detective in the story which would suit Daniel Day-Lewis, just as there are very good parts for Helena Bonham Carter, Julian Sands, and Rupert Graves, now all in their fifties.” While Carter, Sands, and Graves are all still working, it seems ambitious to recruit Daniel Day-Lewis, who announced last year that his role as Reynolds Woodcock in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread would be his last. When asked the inevitable question about this matter,...

James Ivory became one of the most acclaimed writer/directors of his generation after making such films as “A Room with a View” and “The Remains of the Day,” but it wasn’t a Merchant Ivory film that won him an Oscar. That would be “Call Me by Your Name,” the screenplay for which Ivory adapted from André Aciman’s novel of the same name. Now 90, he has his sights set on at least two new projects — and wants Daniel Day-Lewis to come out of self-imposed retirement for one of them.
Ivory is currently writing “The Judge’s Will,” based on longtime collaborator Ruth Prawer Jhabvala’s short story of the same name, for director Alexander Payne; he isn’t content to simply write, however: “I’d also been thinking about doing an adaptation of the novel ‘Coral Glynn’ by Peter Cameron, which I’d like to direct, set in England in the 1950s,...
