Former Department of Homeland Security cybersecurity official Christopher Krebs sued Newsmax, Joe diGenova and President Donald Trump’s re-election campaign for defamation.
The suit comes after diGenova said during a Dec. 1 appearance on Newsmax that Krebs “should be drawn and quartered, taken out at dawn and shot.” A few days later, diGenova, a lawyer for Trump, apologized on-air, calling the comments “a poor attempt at humor” and “hyperbole.”
Krebs was fired by Trump after he disputed the outgoing president’s baseless claims of fraud in the 2020 election, which President-elect Joe Biden won. Newsmax, a conservative commentary cable channel, has made headlines for being the only outlet to refuse to call Biden the president-elect. In his comments, diGenova suggested Krebs committed treason, which the complaint says amounted to “ a calculated and pernicious conspiracy to defame and injure” him.

Christopher Krebs, a former top Trump administration cybersecurity official who defended the security of this year’s presidential election, filed suit against attorney Joe diGenova, the Trump campaign and Newsmax for defamation.
Krebs’ lawsuit stems from a segment on The Howie Carr Show, which Newsmax runs. On the show, diGenova said that Krebs should suffer the same fate as those convicted of treason and “should be drawn and quartered,” and “taken out at dawn and shot.”
As he has made baseless claims of electoral fraud, Trump fired Krebs after he vouched for the security and integrity of the election. As a Homeland Security official, Krebs had responsibility for securing the election. He signed on to a statement of election professionals calling the vote the “most secure in American history.”
After diGenova’s comment, Krebs’ lawsuit states, “an angry mob immediately bombarded” him “with a barrage of death threats and harassment,...

On a day that the president spent tweeting a near-constant stream of spurious voter fraud claims to his 88.8 million followers, an emotional Georgia election official pleaded with Donald Trump to stop promoting lies about the election before someone gets hurt. Gabriel Sterling, voting system implementation manager for the state of Georgia and a Republican, issued the emotional plea from a dias at the Georgia state capitol.
“Mr. President, it looks like you likely lost the state of Georgia,” Sterling said. “You have the right to go to the courts. What...

Patrick Gaspard, president of the George Soros-founded Open Society Foundation, posted an open letter to Fox News on Twitter demanding the network stop booking frequent guest Joe diGenova.
“Last night, yet again, Fox gave air time to McCarthyism. This has to stop,” he wrote.
On Wednesday night, diGenova did appear on Fox Business, where he said without evidence “there is no doubt that George Soros controls a very large part of the foreign service part of the State Department and the activities of FBI agents overseas.”

Gaspard called those comments “beyond rhetorical ugliness, beyond fiction, beyond ludicrous” and reiterated his comparison of the segment to McCarthyism.
He even quoted McCarthy-era attorney Joseph Welch and asked, “At long last, have you left no sense of decency?”
“I request an on-air retraction...

Many conservative and right-wing media outlets covered the first day of the impeachment hearings by characterizing the process as a sham, a bust or boring.
But one pundit’s comment stood out: It came from Joe diGenova, who has been featured as a commentator on Fox News and Fox Business.
In an appearance with Lou Dobbs, diGenova said “there’s no doubt that George Soros controls a very large part of the career foreign service of the United States State Department. He also controls the activities of FBI agents overseas who work for NGOs — work with NGOs. That was very evident in Ukraine.” He also said that Soros “wants to run Ukraine and he’s doing everything he can to use every lever of the United States government to make that happen, for business interests, not for good government business.”
The comment was condemned by the CEO of the Anti Defamation League,...

Updated with more details: Shepard Smith is stepping down from Fox News Channel, effective with Friday afternoon’s edition of Shepard Smith Reporting.
The anchor has been a frequent target of President Donald Trump’s attacks, after Smith had been critical of the president at certain points in his administration. Smith’s abrupt departure also comes just hours after Attorney General Bill Barr met with Fnc owner Rupert Murdoch at the media mogul’s New York City residence.
Chris Giglio, a spokesman for Smith, said later Friday that “there is no truth to the rumor about the Barr meeting having anything to do with Shep’s departure.” Added Giglio to the New York Times: “This was Shep’s decision and his alone.”
Smith has been a contrast to many of Fox News’ primetime opinion hosts, contradicting or clarifying their pro-Trump rhetoric and remarks. Most recently, he said that the...

It’s getting more complicated over at Fox News as we move into day three of impeachment inquiry news.
On Wednesday night, primetime host Tucker Carlson slapped back at afternoon news anchor Shepard Smith’s rebuke of a guest on Carlson’s Tuesday night show whom Smith had called “repugnant.” “Unlike maybe some dayside hosts, I’m not very partisan,” Carlson said of Smith.
“Why do we find ourselves in a situation where people aren’t willing to admit that their passions are guiding their news coverage?” Carlson added. “Wouldn’t it be better if we just said out loud, ‘You know, this is what I think’?”
